Muslim merchants were active as traders from the seventh century. Several archipelago Hindu and Buddhist kingdoms established com-mercial and diplomatic connections with Middle Eastern Islamic rulers. Archaeological evidence pointing to this fact has been found at a shipwreck site in the Java Sea near Cirebon. Among the discovered trade goods were indications of Islam in the form of a stamp-mould with the inscription asma’ul husna. Although most of the Indonesian community follow Sunni teaching, in practice at this time in Sumatra and Java there are devotees of Syi’ah. Archaeological evidence points that Islam entered Southeast Asian archipelago from Persia via Gujarat, India. The religion was brought by merchants to Southeast Asia, especially to Indonesia and the Malay peninsula.

Siberut Island, Mt. Talamau, Rimbo Panti Nature Reserve, and intervening locations in West Sumatra Province were visited during two expeditions in 2018-2019 by ornithologists from the Museum Zoologicum Bogoriense (MZB) - Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), Louisiana State University Museum of Natural Science (LSUMNS), and Andalas University. The main objective of these expeditions was to obtain data and tissue-subsample rich museum specimens for morphological and genetic studies of phylogeny and population genetics of Southeast Asian birds aimed at understanding the causes of avian diversification in the region. We also observed, photographed, and audio-recorded numerous bird species during the expeditions and archived these data. In total, 285 species were identified, and specimen material was collected from 13 species and 26 subspecies not previously represented in tissue resource collections. Here, we provide complete lists of birds found at each location, highlight distributional discoveries, and note cases of potential taxonomic, ecological, and conservation interest.

Abstract. An ionosonde network consisting of a meridional chain and an equatorial pair was established in the Southeast Asian area. Three of four ionosondes are along the magnetic meridian of 100° E; two are close to the magnetic conjugate points in Northern Thailand and West Sumatra, Indonesia, and the other is near the magnetic equator in the Malay Peninsula, Thailand. The fourth ionosonde is also near the magnetic equator in Vietnam but separated by about 6.3° towards east from the meridional chain. For a preliminary data analysis, nighttime ionospheric height variations at the three stations of the meridional chain were examined. The results demonstrate that the coordination of the network has a great potential for studying ionosphere/thermosphere dynamics. Through the assistance of model calculations, thermospheric neutral winds were inferred and compared with the HWM93 empirical thermospheric wind model. Higher-order wind variations that are not represented in the empirical model were found.

The genus Termes Linneus, 1758 consisting of a total of 24 valid named species known from the Old World, is a very heterogeneous group of termites and seems to involve many taxonomic obscurities and confusions. In the island of Sumatra, the sixth-largest island located in the Southeast Asian tropics, four species of Termes have been found, namely, T. comis, T. laticornis, T. rostratus, and T. propinquus. Termes propinquus is also known from Brunei, Indonesia (Kalimantan and Sumatra), Malaysia, and Thailand. However, previous authors have mentioned that T. propinquus has been poorly discriminated from the other congeners, especially T. rostratus. Therefore, the present study aimed at clarifying the discrimination of Termes propinquus from the morphologically similar congeners from Sumatra. A total of 14 nests were collected using a standardized sampling protocol and visual colony searching in Sumatra and its adjacent island. As a result of a careful morphological examination of the soldier caste, T. propinquus was discriminated from the three other congeners by a combination of the following characteristics: distinctly long frontal projection, larger head capsule, and 2nd antennal segment distinctly longer than the 3rd. The redescription of the soldier caste of T. propinquus and a key to Termes species known from Sundaland are provided. The nests of T. propinquus were attached to the bases of living trees, clinging to stumps or the bases of the dead tree, or were epigeal.

<p><strong>Abstrak:</strong> Pada Maret 2017, pemerintah Indonesia menetapkan Barus sebagai titik nol peradaban Islam Indonesia, yang ditandai dengan pembangunan sebuah monumen sederhana yang diresmikan langsung oleh Presiden RI. Para sejarawan Muslim memberikan respons terhadap kebijakan tersebut, ada yang mendukung dan ada yang tidak. Penulis merasa penting untuk sekali lagi menekankan bahwa Peureulak di pantai timur Sumatra adalah kerajaan Islam tertua di Indonesia bahkan Asia Tenggara. Sesungguhnya ini sudah merupakan kesimpulan dari sejumlah kajian para sejarawan. Sebab itu, dari perspektif akademik, penetapan Barus sebagai titik nol peradaban Islam masih perlu dikaji dan ditinjau kembali. Sebab meskipun Barus menjadi lokasi pertama yang menerima Islam pertama sekali, tetapi masyarakat Muslim di sana tidak membentuk kekuatan politik, melainkan Peureulak lah yang sukses mencapai kekuatan politik Islam pertama di Nusantara.</p><p><strong>Abstract:</strong> Peureulak Sultanate and the Discourse on ‘Zero Point of Nusantara’s Islamic Civilization’. In March 2017, Indonesian Government officially recognized Barus, a historical small city at the western coast of Sumatra, as the zero point of Indonesian Islamic Civilization. This recognition was marked by a relatively modest monument, inaugurated by the President of the Republic of Indonesia. Muslim historians responded differently: some agree and others disagree. The present author finds it very important to underline once again that Peureulak Sultanate at the eastern coast of Aceh was the first sizeable Islamic Kingdom of not just the Indonesia archipelago but also of the whole Southeast Asian archipelago. As a matter of fact, this has been the conclusion of several historical studies. Therefore, from scholarly point of view, the placement of this important monument at Barus needs to be studied and revisited. While Barus was indeed the first point of the arrival of Islam, the Muslim community there did not form any sizeable socio-political force. Peureulak, on the other hand, was successful in doing so.</p><p><strong>Kata Kunci:</strong> Peureulak, Aceh, Nusantara, politik</p>

The Philippine phasmid fauna is highly biodiverse (Hennemann & Conle 2007), but several taxonomic groups are as yet little understood. An obvious example is the superfamily Aschiphasmatoidea Brunner von Wattenwyl, 1893. Philippine representatives of this ancestral clade (Zompro 2004) fall into the Southeast-Asian subfamilies Aschiphasmatinae (Aschiphasmatidae), and Korinninae (Prisopodidae). Altogether, only nine species have been recorded from the archipelago, although some species cited by Redtenbacher (1906) and Bruner (1915) appear to be erroneous records. Zompro (2004: 90) indicates that Philippine reports of Orthomeria (Orthomeria) pandora (Westwood, 1859) and O. (O.) forstenii (de Haan, 1842) have been based on misidentifications. Additionally, Aschiphasma annulipes Westwood, 1834 is here excluded from the Philippine fauna; definite distribution records of this species include Indonesia (Kalimantan, Java and Sumatra), Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and north India.

Indonesia is a maritime continent in Southeast Asian, laying between Indian Ocean and Pacific Ocean. This position intensely affects the level of rainfall in Indonesia, especially West Sumatra. The availability of rainfall data can form a Markov chain which its state is not able to be observed directly (hidden), is called the Hidden Markov Model (HMM). The purposes of this research are to predict the hidden state of the availability of rainfall data using decoding problems and to find the best state sequence (optimal) by using Viterbi Algorithm, and also to predict probability for the availability of rainfall data in the future by using the Baum Welch Algorithm in the Hidden Markov Model. This research uses secondary data with a period of one day from the availability of rainfall data at the Minangkabau Meteorological Station, Padang Pariaman Climatology Station, and Silaing Bawah Geophysics Station from January 2018 to July 2019. The results of the prediction show that the Hidden Markov Model can be used to predict the probability of rainfall data availability. The results for the availability of the highest rainfall data for one day ahead is at the Padang Pariaman Climatology Station, with a probability of 0.36, followed by Minangkabau Meteorological Station is 0.35, and Silaing Bawah Geophysics station is 0.29. The result has shown for the next one day period the probability of rainfall data available from the three stations will be available following the Viterbi algorithm.

AbstractThis article is a case study of an iconic symbol of Indonesian Islamization: the tombstones of al-Malik al-Sālih (d.696/1297 AD), believed to be the first Muslim Sultan of the polity of Samudra in Sumatra. The author questions the dominance of textualist approaches in Southeast Asian historical inquiry by applying the concept of the "integral cultural product"—in which text, visual content and material are equally important and interdependent. This fresh analysis suggests that al-Sālih's tombstones are actually later replacements for an older grave, so raising new questions about the construction of legitimacy and ancestry in early Islamic Southeast Asia. Cette contribution étudie un symbole de l'islamisation indonésienne: les pierres tombales d'al-Malik al-Sālih (décédé en l'an 696/1297 ap. J.-C.) réputé être le premier sultan musulman du royaume de Samudra à Sumatra. L'auteur conteste la dominance de la méthode textualiste dans les recherches historiques sur l'Asie du Sud-est en utilisant le concept de "produit culturel intégral": le texte, l'aspect extérieur et la matière, interdépendants, doivent être analysés globalement. Cette approche nouvelle suggère que les pierres tombales d'al-Malik al-Sālih seraient effectivement des substituts tardifs d'un tombeau plus ancien, ce qui soulève des interrogations sur la construction de la légitimité et de l'ascendance à l'aube de l'ère islamique en Asie du Sud-est.

This study aims to find out the Maritime Economic Development of ASEAN Countries and Riau Islands - Indonesia. ASEAN which was established on August 8, 1967 through the Bangkok Declaration by Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand. Then in 1984 he joined the State of Brunei Darussalam, in 1995 followed by the country of Vietnam, in 1997 the countries of Laos and Myanmar, and in 1998 joined the country of Cambodia. ASEAN in the Indonesian language known as Perbara or Perhimpunan Nations of Southeast Asia is a collaborative organization in the field of economy and geo-politics. The variables used in this study are Economic Growth, Export Rate. Inflation, and IPM. The data used is time series data, namely from 2014-2016. The analytical method used in this study is descriptive and econometric analysis. World Bank data, in 2017, predicts that there are three countries, namely Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, which are predicted to have the most expansive economic growth after India in 2017-2019, and it is estimated that economic growth can reach 7%. while Indonesia in Quarter II 2017 grew 5.1 percent (BPS, 2017), while in 2013 it grew 5.58 percent. Riau Islands, a small town that captures part of NKRI in 2015 6.02 percent (yoy) economic growth, in the second quarter of 2017 must be willing with the lowest number two national economic growth, which is 2.02 percent which was the highest in Sumatra exceed national figures of 4.79 percent. (yoy). Suggestions given in this study include the need to think about a policy strategy that has potential economic areas to support sustainable export growth so that it can improve economic growth better.

AbstractCoins appeared relatively late in the history of maritime Southeast Asia. No indigenous coins have so far been dated to before the very end of the eighth or the beginning of the ninth century A.D. These early gold and silver (or silver alloy) coins, which seem to be unique to the region, have so far been found on the Malay peninsula, on the Indonesian islands of Sumatra, Java and Bali, and in the Philippines. The prototypes for these coins were almost certainly first minted in the Javanese state of Mataram, and the spread of their use was apparently linked to the expansion of this state's influence in the maritime trade networks. As the early Asian sea trade boom began to affect the domestic marketing patterns of Java, after the beginning of the tenth century, the need for large numbers of smaller denomination coins grew more pressing. Chinese copper cash were first imported, and then copied, in order to meet this demand.

Abstract. Peat surface CO2 emission, groundwater table depth and peat temperature were monitored for two years along transects in an Acacia plantation on thick tropical peat (>4 m) in Sumatra, Indonesia. A total of 2300 emission measurements were taken at 144 locations, over a 2 year period. The autotrophic root respiration component of CO2 emission was separated from heterotrophic emission caused by peat oxidation in three ways: (i) by comparing CO2 emissions within and beyond the tree rooting zone, (ii) by comparing CO2 emissions with and without peat trenching (i.e. cutting any roots remaining in the peat beyond the tree rooting zone), and (iii) by comparing CO2 emissions before and after Acacia tree harvesting. On average, the contribution of autotrophic respiration to daytime CO2 emission was 21% along transects in mature tree stands. At locations 0.5 m from trees this was up to 80% of the total emissions, but it was negligible at locations more than 1.3 m away. This means that CO2 emission measurements well away from trees were free of any autotrophic respiration contribution and thus represent only heterotrophic emissions. We found daytime mean annual CO2 emission from peat oxidation alone of 94 t ha−1 y−1 at a mean water table depth of 0.8 m, and a minimum emission value of 80 t ha−1 y−1 after correction for the effect of diurnal temperature fluctuations, which may result in a 14.5% reduction of the daytime emission. There is a positive correlation between mean long-term water table depth and peat oxidation CO2 emission. However, no such relation is found for instantaneous emission/water table depth within transects and it is clear that factors other than water table depth also affect peat oxidation and total CO2 emissions. The increase in the temperature of the surface peat due to plantation establishment may explain over 50% of peat oxidation emissions. Our study sets a standard for greenhouse gas flux studies from tropical peatlands under different forms of agricultural land management. It is the first to purposefully quantify heterotrophic CO2 emissions resulting from tropical peat decomposition by separating these from autotrophic emissions. It also provides the most scientifically- and statistically-rigorous study to date of CO2 emissions resulting from anthropogenic modification of this globally significant carbon rich ecosystem. Our findings indicate that past studies have underestimated emissions from peatland plantations, with important implications for the scale of greenhouse gas emissions arising from land use change, particularly in the light of current, rapid agricultural conversion of peatlands in the Southeast Asian region.

AbstractBackground:Southeast Asia is the second biggest region in the world in terms of the total number of natural disasters since 1900. Therefore, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) initiated regional challenges toward strengthening regional collaboration for disaster prevention and response since the earthquake of Sumatra in Indonesia occurred in 2004. Moreover, ASEAN Leaders signed “the ASEAN Declaration on One ASEAN, One Response” in 2016. Under these circumstances, ASEAN decided to implement the Project for Strengthening the ASEAN Regional Capacity on Disaster Health Management (ARCH Project).Objectives:The objective of the ARCH Project is to strengthen coordination on disaster health management (DHM) for rapid and effective response to disasters occurring in the ASEAN region and to enhance the capacity of each ASEAN Member State (AMS) on DHM. This article aims to overview the outline and its strategy, and review the progress of the project.Methods:ARCH Project is an ASEAN official project supported by Japan’s official development assistance. Five outputs were launched for: (1) coordination platform on DHM; (2) framework of regional collaboration practices; (3) tools for effective regional collaboration; (4) enhancement of academic network on DHM; and (5) capacity development activities for each AMS. The Project was reviewed in terms of accomplishment and evaluation criteria.Results:Regional Coordination Committee on DHM was established as a coordination platform to: Oversee the implementation of the ARCH Project for the Output 1; Regional Collaboration Drill was developed and conducted for the Output 2; The standard operating procedure for coordination of emergency medical teams (EMTs) in ASEAN was developed for the Output 3; Various presentations on ARCH were made in academic conferences for the Output 4; and Several training programs and educational curricula were developed for the Output 5. The Project has accomplished its Project Purpose and satisfied all the indicators set. ARCH Project has high Relevance, Impact, Sustainability, and Effectiveness, while some improvements in Efficiency are needed.Conclusions:ARCH Project is the first-ever successful regional cooperation mechanism and standardization of DHM in ASEAN, one of the most disaster-prone regions. It also contributes to the capacity building of AMS. The ARCH Project has a remarkable impact on the resilience and flexible medical response to disasters, although continuous efforts of stakeholders to make this initiative sustainable are necessary.

In Southeast Asia, Oligocene climate is well known to be represented by dry/ seasonal climate. However, it was reported possible appearance of wet climate period during the expantion of dry condition. This work is aimed to confi rm the Oligocene climate which occurred in western Indonesia. Climate change is useful to understand the Oligocene stratigraphy of Western Indonesia. This study uses cutting samples from off shore exploration wells situated in West and East Java and West Natuna as well as on-shore Central Sumatera and West Java. Samples are processed using standard preparation methods to produce suitable pollen assemblage for quantitative analysis.This study proves that the Oligocene sediments yield rich pollen assemblages including those of environment and climate indicators. Abundant fresh water algae of Pediastrum and Bosedinia in Early Oligocene indicates the appearance of lacustrine sediments. This sediment was formed under dry/ seasonal climate as marked by rich grass pollen Monoporites annulatus in the absence or rare occurance of rain forest elements. Mean while, Late Oligocene is characterised by common brackish elements to indicate shifting paleoenvironment into transition to shallow marine. The climate was changing into wetter condition as evidenced by high appearance of Dacrydium and Casuarina as well as other rain forest palynomorphs. The wettest climate probably occured in Java region which refl ected a wet climate fringe to the eastern margin of Sundaland prior to the collision of the Australian and Asian Plates at the Oligo-Miocene boundary. However, in general, dry/ seasonal climate is the rule for most of the Oligocene in Western Indonesia.

Since the 1950s, Sundaland (Borneo, Java, Sumatra and their surrounding islands) was thought to be inhabited by a single slow loris species, the greater slow loris Nycticebus coucang. Early taxonomies as well as recent morphological and genetic studies, however, point to at least three species native to this region: N. coucang, N. menagensis, and N. javanicus. In the light of this taxonomy, all Sundaland slow lorises, previously considered Least Threatened, have been listed as Vulnerable or Endangered. Of particular concern is the fact that slow lorises are the most common protected primate species in the rampant Southeast Asian pet trade, resulting in their recent transferral to CITES Appendix I precluding all international commercial trade. Due to lack of knowledge regarding morphological differences between the three species, they are still managed as one, with potential serious affects to wild populations, as hard-release of individuals of unknown geographic origin is common. This paper examines morphological variability of 34 live slow lorises, all of which were rescued from the wildlife trade in Java, Indonesia. Morphometric data and diagnostic images were collected, various species descriptions were considered and statistical analyses were conducted and compared with other taxonomists’ classifications. A discriminant function analysis provided support for four distinct groupings: Nycticebus coucang and N. javanicus, as well as evidence for two new taxa that correspond closely to N. hilleri and N. ornatus. The morphological traits that varied significantly and the external characteristic trends described in this study that contributed to these groupings might provide a baseline to classify Nycticebus taxa. This information is pertinent for appropriate captive management and specific designation of rescued individuals and for designing proper in-situ and ex-situ conservation strategies.

Based on the research by the Sexuality and Gender Study Center of University of Indonesia, the rate of early marriage in Indonesia is the second highest in Southeast Asian in which 2 million out of 7.3 million women below 15 years old are married and drop out from school. Early marriage hinders them from going to school, causes pregnancy and birth complication, impedes the achievement of KB (Family Planning) Program and increases divorce rate. Goals : The objective of the research was to discover the correlation of value of virginity, knowledge and trust with early marriage at Dusun I Desa Baru. Methods: This is an observational analytical research with cross sectional design. It was done at Dusun I Desa Baru, Pancur Batu Subdistrict from November, 2017 until February, 2018. The population covered the teenagers below 20 years old which was all taken as the research samples i.e. 139 people. The dependent variable was early marriage, while the independent variables were parent income, trust, knowledge and value of virginity. The data were collected through questionnaires. Multiple logistic regression testing was employed to analyze the data. Result : The research results demonstrated that the variable with the most dominant influence was parent income at p-value = 0.006 (p<0.05) and Exp. β value = 3.675, followed by the variable of trust at p-value = 0.027 (p<0.05) and Exp. β value = 2.368, the variable of knowledge at p-value = 0.003 (p<0.05) and Exp. β value 6.064, and the variable of virginity at p-value = 0.003 (p<0.05) and Exp. Β value = 6.064. Based on these results, it was concluded that f(y) was 97%. It indicated that the probability of the variables of parent income, trust, knowledge and virginity influenced early marriage of 97.7%. Conclusion: It is recommended that the local government cooperate with local Puskesmas, Religious Figures, and Parents to conduct counseling to improve people’s knowledge of the ideal age to get married, so that they can prevent from possible problems due to early marriage and provide their children parent income at early age the importance of protecting their virginity until they get married.

Ompok brevirictus, a new species of silurid catfish is described from the short coastal rivers draining the western face of the Leuser Mountain Range and debouching into the Indian Ocean in Nangroe Aceh Darussalam province, northern Sumatra. Ompok brevirictus can be distinguished from Ompok siluroides and O. miostomus, the Southeast Asian congeners that it most resembles, in having an evenly convex predorsal profile (vs. with a concavity posterior to orbit) and a more prominent lower jaw that is more broadly curving. Ompok brevirictus additionally differs from O. siluroides in having the mouth rictus separated from the anterior orbital margin by a distance of one-third (vs. less than one-third) eye diameter (4.2–5.2% HL vs. 3.2–3.7) and lacking (vs. with) a distinct dark wedge-shaped spot on the base of the caudal fin. The identity of the Southeast Asian material usually identified as O. bimaculatus is also clarified. Ompok bimaculatus is restricted to the Indian subcontinent and Myanmar in this study; the Southeast Asian material previously identified as conspecific is hereby referred to either O. siluroides or O. miostomus.

Abstract This study examines the uses of domestic water buffalo milk in south Sumatra, Indonesia, one of the few areas in not only Indonesia but also the Philippines where the rare practice of milking animals occurs in Southeast Asia. In south Sumatra, both milking domestic water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) locally known as kerbao pampangan—and making milk products are frequently practiced. The research was thus conducted into the breeding and milking of domestic water buffalo and making of milk products in a Muslim village of the OKI District (Ogan Komering Ilir Regency), south Sumatra, using participant observation, interviews, and questionnaires, to understand the life and culture of the villagers. The findings revealed domestic water buffalo to be the main livestock used for the production and sale of either meat or milk products. Heated milk products, such as candy (gulo puan, sagon puan) and jelly (jerry susu) are produced, probably because fresh milk risks lactose intolerance or milk contaminants, but not yogurt (dadihi), which is produced in north Sumatra. Investigating such unique uses of milk in south Sumatra from an ecological anthropological viewpoint attests to an evident culture of milking domestic water buffalo in south Sumatra, and that arises from the relationship between the people and their livestock. Furthermore, although the murrah (buffalo) is rapidly replacing the domestic water buffalo, due to its higher milk yield, across Southeast Asia, the latter remains predominant in the area.

Southeast Asian box turtles Cuora amboinensis are distributed in mainland Southeast Asia and throughout most of insular Southeast Asia and are often found in habitats shared with humans. In the 2000s evidence emerged of an enormous illegal export of Southeast Asian box turtles from Indonesia estimated at a hundred times larger than the legal exports. Using publicly available data we show that one or two exporters in Sampit in the province of Central Kalimantan, one of nine provinces where harvest of Southeast Asian box turtles is authorised, continue to trade above permitted levels. Harvest quotas for Central Kalimantan are set at 1000 turtles a year, and this is divided between five approved traders, two of whom are based in Sampit. A single visit to one of these two traders in April 2019 documented the presence of 549 Southeast Asian box turtles. Based on documented data from middlemen we estimate that the number of Southeast Asian box turtles that are harvested in Central Kalimantan to supply the traders in Sampit amounts to 19,000–45,000 individuals a year. If the Sampit traders stay within their quotas potential profits are less than USD 400 year−1, compared to up to USD 40,000 year−1 when trading the higher numbers. It is not known how many box turtles are traded by the other three exporters in the province. With the annual harvest quota for all of Indonesia set at less than 15,000 the massive illegal trade as documented in the 1990s and 2000s continues unabated. Assessments of the harvest and trade in Southeast Asian box turtles must consider both the sustainability and legality of this trade.

Road-infrastructure development in Southeast Asia is opening new resource frontiers but also consolidating earlier investments in agriculture and trade, as illustrated by the 2,700-km Trans-Sumatra Highway planned for Sumatra, Indonesia. In contrast to earlier broadscale forest losses in Sumatra, driven historically in Sumatra infrastructure and agricultural expansion, the Trans-Sumatra Highway would largely affect remnant forests. We identify Kerinci Seblat National Park and its surrounds, the Leuser Ecosystem, and the Batang Toru area as three remnant-forest areas critical to Sumatra’s ecological integrity and facing conservation challenges that would be significantly aggravated by the Trans-Sumatra Highway. If completed as planned, the highway will promote human incursions into the fringes of these areas. New Indonesian regulations concerning road developments in forests are unlikely to prevent such outcomes. The regulations afford weaker protections to ungazetted and noncore protected forests, which typify remnant-forest areas threatened by infrastructure expansion and are often critical for species conservation. We urge that ungazetted protected forests be given equal priority to gazetted protected forests in regard to conservation planning for road development, and also that gazetted forests be expanded in the Leuser Ecosystem and Batang Toru area to hedge against further incursions. Without such provisions, recent legal challenges to road developments in Sumatra’s remnant forests have often been unsuccessful. The Trans-Sumatra Highway may conceivably promote an effective legal alliance between conservationists and agricultural communities threatened with land expropriation, given that nearly half of the highway’s route remains pending contentious land-acquisition processes.

At the railroad track in Indonesia there is currently no railroad that has operated using the slab track construction but at this time the Government of Indonesia is conducting railroad construction in Indonesia on a national scale. In the construction of the South Sumatra LRT (Light Rail Transit) is a power railroad construction electricity that is in the process of development that will use modern railroad construction that is using slab track construction. In this very happy opportunity the writer got the opportunity to do research at the South Sumatra LRT Work Unit because the South Sumatra LRT is under construction. South Sumatra LRT uses elevated road construction using slab track construction. At present the South Sumatra LRT is the first project to undertake slab track construction in Indonesia. In fact, there is no railroad in Indonesia that operates using slab track construction.

Early marriage has become an important issue in Indonesia. Even though the rate of early marriage shows a decline until 2020, the number still makes Indonesia become the country with the second highest early marriage in Southeast Asia. Early marriage that occurs can hinder the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and can have an impact on the Human Development Index. The existence of a relationship between early marriage and HDI encourages researchers to conduct studies that aimed at examining the effect of the prevalence of early marriage on HDI in each district/city in Indonesia on 2020. This study uses the Geographically Weighted Logistic Regression (GWLR) analysis method with the data sourced from the National Socio-Economic Survey (SUSENAS) raw data in March 2020 and publication data on the website of The Central Bureau of Statistics. The results of the analysis found that the prevalence of early marriage has a negative and significant effect in several districts/cities in the Provinces of Aceh, North Sumatra, West Sumatra, Riau, Jambi, South Sumatra, Bengkulu, Lampung, Bangka Belitung Islands, Riau Islands, West Java, Central Sulawesi, South Sulawesi, Southeast Sulawesi, Maluku, and West Papua. This research is expected to be a recommendation for the government and community organizations to conduct socialization regarding the maturity age of marriage and the adverse effects that can be caused by early marriage.

Since the 1950s both Indonesia and Malaysia have contributed to United Nations peace operations across the world to varying degrees. Both states have contributed to regional peace initiatives as well; again to varying degrees and levels of success. These regional initiatives are seen through the prism of greater regionalism, which reflects a shift in focus to regional organisations in the pursuit of peace. Furthermore, understanding the motivations and decisions to contribute to peace operations requires a multifocal lens that recognises the various manifestations of this commitment and identifies the salient motivations behind these decisions. This lens illustrates that both competition and cooperation co-exist in the Indonesian and Malaysian decisions to contribute to peace operations in pursuit of increased political legitimacy in the global system.

Background. The bay cat Catopuma badia is endemic to Borneo, whereas its sister species the Asian golden cat Catopuma temminckii is distributed from the Himalayas and southern China through Indochina, Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra. Based on morphological data, up to five subspecies of the Asian golden cat have been recognized, but a taxonomic assessment, including molecular data and morphological characters, is still lacking. Results. We combined molecular data (whole mitochondrial genomes), morphological data (pelage) and species distribution projections (up to the Late Pleistocene) to infer how environmental changes may have influenced the distribution of these sister species over the past 120 000 years. The molecular analysis was based on sequenced mitogenomes of 3 bay cats and 40 Asian golden cats derived mainly from archival samples. Our molecular data suggested a time of split between the two species approximately 3.16 Ma and revealed very low nucleotide diversity within the Asian golden cat population, which supports recent expansion of the population. Discussion. The low nucleotide diversity suggested a population bottleneck in the Asian golden cat, possibly caused by the eruption of the Toba volcano in Northern Sumatra (approx. 74 kya), followed by a continuous population expansion in the Late Pleistocene/Early Holocene. Species distribution projections, the reconstruction of the demographic history, a genetic isolation-by-distance pattern and a gradual variation of pelage pattern support the hypothesis of a post-Toba population expansion of the Asian golden cat from south China/Indochina to Peninsular Malaysia and Sumatra. Our findings reject the current classification of five subspecies for the Asian golden cat, but instead support either a monotypic species or one comprising two subspecies: (i) the Sunda golden cat, distributed south of the Isthmus of Kra: C. t. temminckii and (ii) Indochinese, Indian, Himalayan and Chinese golden cats, occurring north of the Isthmus: C. t. moormensis .

The five cases of Protestant Christian practice in Indonesia and Thailand presented in this symposium are used to develop a sociology of Protestantism in Southeast Asia. A review is first undertaken of the history of Protestant missionary activity in Southeast Asia. Protestantism, it is observed, insists on the ultimate authority of the Bible. This authority has not been accepted by Southeast Asians until they have access to the Christian message in their own languages and they are motivated to adopt Christian practices as a means to confront deep crises in their lives. The establishment of Protestant Christianity has entailed the interpreting of the Christian message with reference to the non-Christian contexts in which Protestants in Southeast Asia live.

The experience from the Asian tsunami can provide valuable lessons in preparedness and response.

Nepenthes spp. is a typical plant of Southeast Asia especially Indonesia which has a special leaf modification called a pitcher. The largest number of Nepenthes spp. species in Indonesia is on the island of Sumatra. The purpose of this reseach was to identify and analyze cluster Nepenthes spp. from South Sumatra based on morphological characteristics. The specimens were collected from the forest of Tekorejo Village, Air Itam Village and cultivation location in Palembang city of South Sumatra. Identification of morphological characters performed on the characteristics of root, stem, leaves, and pitcher. The morphological data is used for cluster analysis using NTSYS software version 2.02. The identification results showed 9 variants of Nepenthes spp. which belong to the species N. mirabilis, N. gracilis, and N. sumatrana. Dendogram analysis results form two main clusters with a similarity value of 22%. The first cluster consists of N. mirabilis and N. sumatrana. The second cluster consists of N. gracilis. Based on the results of this study can be concluded that the species Nepenthes spp. South Sumatra is N. mirabilis, N. gracilis, and N. sumatrana. The results of this study will be dedicated to updating information about the existence of Nepenthes spp. from South Sumatra and his cluster.

Meanwhile, there are a large number of Islamic terrorist organizations involving active women throughout the Southeast Asian region, from Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore to the Philippines. In this regard, the emergence of ISIS has strengthened and institutionalized acts of terror and violence by Southeast Asian women following the ISIS declaration to establish a regional khilafah (Caliphate).
