Abstract (sommario):
The Hotelling T-squared statistic has been widely used for the testing of differences in means for the multivariate data. The existing statistic under classical statistics is applied when observations in multivariate data are determined, precise, and exact. In practice, it is not necessary that all observations in the data are determined and precise due to measurement in complex situations and under uncertainty environment. In this paper, we will introduce the Hotelling T-squared statistic under neutrosophic statistics (NS) which is the generalization of classical statistics and applied under uncertainty environment. We will discuss the application and advantage of the neutrosophic Hotelling T-squared statistic with the aid of data. From the comparison, we will conclude that the proposed statistic is more adequate and effective in uncertainty.

Abstract (sommario):
Noise identification is one of the most important issues in radar and sonar engineering, in which Kolmogorov–Smirnov (KS) statistic is widely adopted. Although KS statistic is the most reliable method till now, it does not have high precision as people believe. The performance of KS statistic is studied in this work, while an experiment is carried out to show the precision of KS statistic, including both test and recognition. The result could help researchers decreasing error of using KS statistic in the future.

Abstract (sommario):
Aiming at hiding information in 2D engineering graphics based on geometric features, a steganalysis method is proposed in this paper. First, the authors obtained the number of 2D engineering graphics’ strictly vertical and horizontal lines and identify the number of horizontal and vertical lines which are deviated from the straight line within a certain range. Subsequently, the authors selected the ratio between the deviated lines and the normal lines as the statistical characteristics. Finally, a detection model was constructed based on the hypothesis. Experimental results show that the algorithm can detect hidden information in the 2D engineering graphics effectively.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract A new wavelet analysis methodology is applied to open ocean wave height data from the Southern Ocean Waves Experiment (1992) and from a field experiment conducted at Duck, North Carolina, in 1997 with the aim of estimating the directionality and crest lengths of steep waves. The crest directionality statistic shows that most of the steep wave crests are normal to the direction of the mean wind. This is inconsistent with the Fourier wavenumber spectrum that shows a broad bimodal directional spreading at high wavenumbers. The crest length statistics demonstrate that the wave field is dominated by short-crested waves with small crest length/wavelength ratios. The one-dimensional steep wave statistic obtained from the integration of the directional (two dimensional) steep wave statistic is consistent with the one-dimensional steep wave statistic obtained from the one-dimensional analysis at high wave slope thresholds.

Abstract (sommario):
Agriculture has been consistently marked as one of the deadliest industries by the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). While this statistic is widely used in promoting agricultural safety and health, it does not paint a complete picture on the current status of agricultural safety and the advances that have been made in the last century. For example, even with a stagnant rate of injury, the BLS has reported that fatal incidents decreased from a high of 855 incidents in 1993 to a low of 500 incidents in 2013. The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact that agricultural engineering developments had on reducing fatal injuries. Agricultural engineering developments are defined as any agricultural improvement that results in a direct reduction in the amount of labor needed. This study uses existing federal agricultural statistical, injury and demographic data to calculate the impact that engineering, in contrast to yield improvements and safety enhancements, contributed to a reduction in the number of fatal incidents. The study found that engineering developments could have contributed to the reduction in the number of fatal injuries by about 170 incidents from 1992 to 2015. This represents 63% of the total reduction in the number of fatal injuries. In conclusion, agricultural engineering developments play a substantial role in reducing the number of fatal incidents by removing and reducing labor exposure to hazardous environments.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract A new wavelet analysis methodology is proposed to estimate the statistics of steep waves. The method is applied to open ocean wave height data from the Southern Ocean Waves Experiment (1992) and from a field experiment conducted at Duck, North Carolina (1997). Results show that high wave slope crests appear over a wide range of wavenumbers, with a large amount being much shorter than the dominant wave. At low wave slope thresholds, all wave fields have roughly the same amount of wave crests regardless of wind forcing. The steep wave statistic decays exponentially with the square of the wave slope threshold, with a decay rate that is larger for the low wind cases than the high wind cases. Comparison of the steep wave statistic with independent measurements of the breaking wave statistic suggests a breaking wave slope threshold of about 0.12. The steep wave statistic does not scale with the cube of the wind speed, suggesting that other factors besides the wind speed also affect its level. Comparison of the steep wave statistic to the saturation spectrum reveals a reasonable correlation at moderate wave slope thresholds.

Abstract (sommario):
The international roughness index (IRI) and the half-car roughness index (HRI) are the two commonly used roughness indices for pavement management, decision making, prioritization, budgeting, and planning. This work presents a new statistic, termed the full-car roughness index (FRI), for calculation of roughness from longitudinal pavement profiles. FRI is calculated from a single, equivalent profile that is a composite of four corner profiles based on both civil and mechanical engineering principles. More specifically, the full-car (four-wheel) model combines the rear and front suspension systems through an interdependent relation of motion with the longitudinal axle. To validate this model, the FRI values for different pavement sections are determined for sampling roughness measurements from several states and provinces. Then, the behavior of FRI is compared with that of IRI and HRI. The methodology of assessment uses a Monte Carlo simulation for calibration and validation of the index. Correlations derived from this sensitivity analysis on the basis of regression analysis arrive at a conversion chart to propose conversion values from these indices to FRIs. Overall, this paper suggests that the mechanical response of the proposed full-car model is more representative of the characteristics of a real vehicle than the response of a quarter- or half-car model. The results also indicate that FRI is less sensitive to the governing factors that account for the quarter-car simulation and thus provides an index that is unique, insightful, and more effective in the characterization of ride quality.

Abstract (sommario):
A spatial statistic method for quantitative analysis of cohesive soil containing calcareous nodules mesostructure was illustrated in ArcGIS. Through cluster unsupervised classification methods of raster image processing, calcareous nodules can be extracted from soil mesostructure images. Using standard deviational ellipse, the orientation angles of calcareous nodules can be fast determined, and the area, perimeter, thickness and characteristics of ellipse of calcareous nodules can be measured by geometry statistics. Based on the above statistical data, the granularity, eccentricity and orientation distribution can be obtained by fractal analysis. The results show that the method is more scientific, reliable and efficient for the quantitative analysis of cohesive soil containing calcareous nodules mesostructure.

Randomicity of basic variable results in the problem of structural reliability. A series of statistical parameters is applied in reliability calculation. Statistical parameters are attained by the statistics and analysis of source data of basic variable. However the basic variable source data is imperfect for a lot of structure. On the other hand, the relation of reliability index and basic variable is an important issue in reliability calculation. The two matters are solved in this paper by fuzzy mathematics. First, the matter of statistic data scarcity of load and resistibility and offered scientific evidence for estimation of distributing type of load and resistibility it solved by grey forecast; Second , the correlate degree of reliability index and load is calculated by correlate degree theory which can provide scientific evidence for security inspect of project.

Abstract (sommario):
Conventional methods for liquefaction assessment using engineering indices such as Factor of safety against Liquefaction (FL) tend to overestimate liquefaction hazards. The soil dynamics analysis-based assessment with automatic modeling is more rational and robust. Soil properties are known for large uncertainties. Rather than deterministic soil models, statistical models for soil parameters should be considered. With automatic modeling, a large number of statistic models can be generated without difficulty. The problem becomes how to assess liquefaction hazard with statistic models in an efficient way. Using high performance computing, we develop an efficient liquefaction assessment method for statistical modeling of soils. A high parallel efficiency can be achieved and a large number of statical models of the order of 104 can be simulated within a reasonable time span. The method developed in this paper can be used as an efficient tool for unravelling critical parameters of soil liquefaction.

Abstract (sommario):
In the subject of statistics for engineering, physics, computer science, chemistry, and earth sciences, one of the sampling challenges is the accuracy, or, in other words, how representative the sample is of the population from which it was drawn. A series of statistics were developed to measure the departure between the population (theoretical) and the sample (observed) distributions. Another connected issue is the presence of extreme values—possible observations that may have been wrongly collected—which do not belong to the population selected for study. By subjecting those two issues to study, we hereby propose a new statistic for assessing the quality of sampling intended to be used for any continuous distribution. Depending on the sample size, the proposed statistic is operational for known distributions (with a known probability density function) and provides the risk of being in error while assuming that a certain sample has been drawn from a population. A strategy for sample analysis, by analyzing the information about quality of the sampling provided by the order statistics in use, is proposed. A case study was conducted assessing the quality of sampling for ten cases, the latter being used to provide a pattern analysis of the statistics.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction: at present, the geostatistical methodology is broadly used abroad for constructing spatial-correlation and spatial-stochastic models of lithoengineering systems, including description and analysis of soil body heterogeneity. The main goal of this work is an attempt to evaluate the possibility of generating a spatial-correlation model of lithoengineering space based on survey data which could be used for subsequent simulation and deterministic-stochastic analysis of geotechnical structures as well as when designing bases and foundations. Materials and methods: main input parameters for spatial analysis were geological survey report and cone-penetration test (CPT) data. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistic methods, with the calculation of particular and ambiguous values and using statistical software STATISTICA. Later use of the results of the statistical analysis aims at the application of geostatistical interpolation models (kriging) for generating spatial structures of deformation features. The article elaborates experimental correlation functions (variograms) to validate the developed spatial structures. The functions show not only the validity of the spatial simulation but also a level of heterogeneity of the researched soil body. Results: the statistical analysis of the initial data showed relative homogeneity of the researched soil body properties what is substantiated by GOST 20522 instructions. Nevertheless, the geostatistical analysis resulted in the opposite conclusion. Principally, this is due to the lack of information on the researched geological medium. Conclusions: requirements of current Russian standard GOST 20522 do not contain a sufficient amount of information for geostatistical analysis and simulation of a soil body based on modern geostatistical methods. As a result, data of standard engineering-geological researches cannot be used for developing digital foundation models as well as for using probabilistic approaches in geotechnics.

Abstract (sommario):
This work proposes an improved unscented Kalman filter (UKF)-based simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithm based on an adaptive unscented Kalman filter (AUKF) with a noise statistic estimator. The algorithm solves the issue that conventional UKF-SLAM algorithms have declining accuracy, with divergence occurring when the prior noise statistic is unknown and time-varying. The new SLAM algorithm performs an online estimation of the statistical parameters of unknown system noise by introducing a modified Sage-Husa noise statistic estimator. The algorithm also judges whether the filter is divergent and restrains potential filtering divergence using a covariance matching method. This approach reduces state estimation error, effectively improving navigation accuracy of the SLAM system. A line feature extraction is implemented through a Hough transform based on the ranging sonar model. Test results based on unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) sea trial data indicate that the proposed AUKF-SLAM algorithm is valid and feasible and provides better accuracy than the standard UKF-SLAM system.

Abstract (sommario):
Fuzzing is regarded as the most promising method for protocol vulnerabilities discovering in network security of Internet of Things (IoT). However, one fatal drawback of existing fuzzing methods is that a huge number of test files are required to maintain a high test coverage. In this paper, a novel method based on protocol reverse engineering is proposed to reduce the amount of test files for fuzzing. The proposed method uses techniques in the field of protocol reverse engineering to identify message formats of IoT application-layer protocol and create test files by generating messages with error fields according to message formats. The protocol message treated as a sequence of bytes is assumed to obey a statistic process with change-points indicating the boundaries of message fields. Then, a multi-change-point detection procedure is introduced to identify change-points of byte sequences according to their statistic properties and divide them into segments according to their change-points. The message segments are further processed via a position-based occurrence probability test analysis to identify keyword fields, data fields and uncertain fields. Finally, a message generation procedure with mutation operation on message fields is applied to construct test files for fuzzing test. The results show that the proposed method can effectively find out the message fields and significantly reduce the amount of test files for fuzzing test.

Abstract (sommario):
Purpose This paper aims to propose a novel statistic energy analysis method with fuzzy parameters to study the dynamic and acoustic responses of coupled system with fuzzy parameters, which can expand the applied range of statistic energy analysis method in engineering to some extent. Design/methodology/approach On the basis of the property of membership level, the uncertain fuzzy parameters are expressed as the interval forms. Interval mathematics and interval expansion principle are adopted to solve the problem with interval parameters. At last, two numerical examples, which include a two-plate coupled system and a single-partition sound-insulation system, are carried out to demonstrate the feasibility and validity of the presented method. Findings Interval mathematics and interval expansion principle are adopted to solve the problem with interval parameters. Originality/value By integrating the interval analysis, optimization technique and Taylor expansion method, two non-probabilistic, set-theoretical statistical energy analyses are proposed for predicting the dynamical and acoustical response of the complex coupled system with uncertain parameters in high-frequency domain.

Abstract (sommario):
In general, although some random variables such as wind speed, temperature, and load are known to have multimodal distributions, input or output random variables are considered to follow unimodal distributions without assessing the unimodality or multimodality of distributions from samples. In uncertainty analysis, estimating unimodal distribution as multimodal distribution or vice versa can lead to erroneous analysis results. Thus, whether a distribution is unimodal or multimodal must be assessed before the estimation of distributions. In this paper, the bimodality coefficient (BC) and Hartigan’s dip statistic (HDS), which are representative methods for assessing multimodality, are introduced and compared. Then, a combined HDS with BC method is proposed. The proposed method has the advantages of both BC and HDS by using the skewness and kurtosis of samples as well as the dip statistic through a link function between the BC values in BC and significance level in HDS. To verify the performance of the proposed method, statistical simulation tests were conducted to evaluate the multimodality for various unimodal, bimodal, and trimodal models. The implementation of the proposed method to real engineering data is shown through case studies. The results demonstrate that the proposed method is more accurate, robust, and reliable than the BC and original HDS alone.

Abstract (sommario):
A descriptive statistic is one of the statistical analytic tools that very famous to present any data. A descriptive statistic usually used as the first step to tidying up the data before we continue to the next analysis. Therefore, a descriptive statistic may stand as an independent analysis that can present data and give some information about data. There are so many descriptive forms that can be made from any data. Start with the visual form like table, chart, or any data measurement like a measure of central tendency, a measure of the place value, and a measure of dispersion. Many kinds of data can be present as descriptive therefore not every description contain a piece of optimal information for a certain data. The word optimal here means that the descriptive form may give information to estimate population data or to make a decision to follow up any policy. For examples in digital library visitors, the descriptive forms that are very useful are table, chart, and measure of central tendency. While the other measurement will more suitable for other data like the usability of the collection. From this case, so it must be scrutinized what information do we hope for before we decide what kinds of descriptive form will be made.

Abstract (sommario):
An explicit process model is vital in business processes. However, it is complicated and time consuming to create a workflow design. Also discords usually occur between the perceived management processes and the actual workflow processes. Under this condition, the process discovery techniques emerge. The aim is to rebuild a workflow model (e.g. a Petri net) of a business process based on the execution log. The model should give an abstract representation of the system and reproduce the log. This model can be further applied for process redesign/improvement and performance/reliability evaluation. In this paper, we present a new algorithm derived from α-algorithm for process discovery in term of Petri nets, where statistic long distance causal relationship is taken into consideration. Also this algorithm covers some shortages in α-algorithm.

Abstract (sommario):
Time-interleaved technique is widely used to increase the sampling rate of analog-to-digital converter (ADC). However, the channel mismatches degrade the performance of time-interleaved ADC (TIADC). Therefore, a statistic-based calibration method for TIADC is proposed in this paper. The average value of sampling points is utilized to calculate offset error, and the summation of sampling points is used to calculate gain error. After offset and gain error are obtained, they are calibrated by offset and gain adjustment elements in ADC. Timing skew is calibrated by an iterative method. The product of sampling points of two adjacent subchannels is used as a metric for calibration. The proposed method is employed to calibrate mismatches in a four-channel 5 GS/s TIADC system. Simulation results show that the proposed method can estimate mismatches accurately in a wide frequency range. It is also proved that an accurate estimation can be obtained even if the signal noise ratio (SNR) of input signal is 20 dB. Furthermore, the results obtained from a real four-channel 5 GS/s TIADC system demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. We can see that the spectra spurs due to mismatches have been effectively eliminated after calibration.

Abstract (sommario):
Multi-sensor registration is an important and basic problem of intelligent surveillance. A novel visual-thermal image sequence registration method based on motion statistics feature multi-resolution analysis is proposed. In this method, motion statistics feature is utilized to select corresponding point pairs from visual-thermal synchronous video sequence. Then, multi-resolution analysis of motion statistic feature is done to choose proper scale. Finally, outliners are removed by RANSAC, and the geometry transformation parameters are optimized by LM algorithm. By using motion statistics feature, this method avoids the difficult problem of extracting invariant feature from two different image sensor and doesn’t depend on precise motion detection. Through multi-resolution analysis, the proposed approach can resolve the registration under the change of large scale. The performance was demonstrated on three groups of dataset, the results showed that our algorithm carried out precise image registration under the change of translation, scale and rotation.

Abstract (sommario):
An advanced statistical procedure for developing reliable prediction equations relating cotton fiber properties and the skein break factor of yarn is demonstrated. The procedure consists of a sequential analysis in which subsets of independent variables are obtained by linear regression to best predict a dependent variable. Selection of the most reliable equation is based on three main criteria: the R2 statistic, the Cp statistic, and the MSE. The independent variables considered in the analysis are the cotton fiber properties measured by the HVI system (MCI3000). A reliable regression equation relating cotton fiber properties and yarn quality should simultaneously satisfy the two criteria: it has a high R2 value and uses only the most important fiber properties. Written primarily for textile scientists and engineers, the details of the statistical analysis are minimized, and the analysis is presented in its proper context, as a useful tool for the nonstatistician.

Abstract (sommario):
Slurry pumps, such as oil sand pumps, are widely used in industry to convert electrical energy to slurry potential and kinetic energy. Because of adverse working conditions, slurry pump impellers are prone to suffer wear, which may result in slurry pump breakdowns. To prevent any unexpected breakdowns, slurry pump impeller performance degradation assessment should be immediately conducted to monitor the current health condition and to ensure the safety and reliability of slurry pumps. In this paper, to provide an alternative to the impeller health indicator, an enhanced factor analysis based impeller indicator (EFABII) is proposed. Firstly, a low-pass filter is employed to improve the signal to noise ratios of slurry pump vibration signals. Secondly, redundant statistical features are extracted from the filtered vibration signals. To reduce the redundancy of the statistic features, the enhanced factor analysis is performed to generate new statistical features. Moreover, the statistic features can be automatically grouped and developed a new indicator called EFABII. Data collected from industrial oil sand pumps are used to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method is able to track the current health condition of slurry pump impellers.
