Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract (sommario):
An overview of current medieval philosophical and scientific studies would seem justified at the beginning of the 21st century. While no part of the history of philosophy has been so much despised as the Middle Ages (this period having been called until the beginning of the 20th century the ›dark ages‹), numerous internationally signi;cant studies on this topic have recently been published. Essays and monographs, critical editions, anthologies and reviews have addressed many facets of medieval thought, particularly the medieval institutional context and the intellectual life of the Middle Ages along with the history of medieval philosophy and science. This essay looks at studies of different philosophical tendencies from the end of the 13th century to the 15th century, not restricting itself to medieval Aristotelianism.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Mari, Fabrizio. "Giovanni Sercambi : storia e finzione in un narratore toscano medievale". Thesis, Durham University, 2012. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/6389/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis traces the relationship between ‘recounting History’ and ‘re-counting Fiction’ through the analysis of the Croniche di Lucca and the Novelle by Giovanni Sercambi of Lucca (1345-1424). With the rise of literacy, vernacu-lar chronicles and collections of short-stories became increasingly popular among non-literati people, who had not received a formal education and could not read Latin, and consequently showed a marked preference for the fruition of stories in their native tongue. Scholars have already addressed a number of peculiarities that characterize the two works in question. In this thesis the point of view of Sercambi as author, as well as that of his contemporary audience, will be put under the lens. The key argument of the thesis is that Sercambi used the genre of the short story with the intent of shrouding historical facts with a veil of fictional narrative. He was aware that the choice of story-telling represented an alternative and effective vehicle for the transmission of political messages to those Lucchese citizens who read and listened to his stories being read out at Paolo Guinigi’s court. In his short stories Sercambi used the names and circumstances of real Lucchese people for the characterization of a number of personages. Through the examination of untapped archival sources that cast considerable light on Sercambi’s highly personalized approach to narrative, the thesis represents a first attempt to highlight Sercambi’s original contribution to the tradition of the Italian short story. It emerges from this research that Sercambi appears to have achieved a virtuous compromise by being able to mention Paolo Guinigi’s shortcomings as a ruler of Lucca, while at the same time exploring an alternative mode of writing about Lucca’s political and moral decay.

Abstract (sommario):

Paris, EHESS, 2009. http://www.theses.fr/2009EHES0101.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
My PhD dissertation consists in a longue durée study of the codification, diffusion, reinvention and iconographical representation of the "civitas diaboli's paradigm", as I defined it in the Prologue, in western medieval culture. The dissertation is articulated in four parties. The first one concerns IWO cities' inventio by Augustine of Hippo, sin ce De vera religione to De civitate Dei. It offers a detailed investigation of political and theological significations of this notion and of Augustinian vocabulary on il. The second part examines civitas diaboli's widespread diffusion in medieval culture, by analyzing exegetical works recurring to it between 6th and 12th century. Many different distortions and innovations of medieval civitas diaboli are pointed out (as for instance medieval invention of a civitas infernalis). The third part focuses on sorne actualizing civitas diaboli's applications to the contemporary history between nth and 14th century. More particularly, the Carmen in victoriam Pisallorum, the Speculum Ecclesiae, the De incendia oppidi Tuitii by Rupert of Deutz, a lectio by Joachim of Flore on Jerusalem and Babylon, Dante's works and, finally, De ciuitate Dei's translations in French, by Raoul of Presles, and in Florentine at the end of the 14th century are taken into account. The fourth part offers the first study of ail the two cities' representations in the illuminated manuscript tradition of the De ciuitate Dei as weil as of its translations in vernacular. A catalogue of manuscripts in annex completes this study

Abstract (sommario):
During the congress on Paolo Diacono held in Cividale del Friuli in 1899 (eleven centuries after Paolo's death) a scientific committee decided to publish a new edition of Paolo’s opera omnia. A sort of scholar jealousy arised: the Istituto storico italiano thought that its own duty was to publish the Historia romana and the Historia Langobardorum, the main works written by Paolo. The eminent scholar Carlo Cipolla, on the contrary, believed that task was of the Deputazione veneta di storia patria. A compromise was signed: Amedeo Crivellucci (of the Istituto storico) invited Cipolla to collaborate on the edition of both Histories. The present essay recalls that collaboration (that unfortunately was interrupted in 1904) studying the correspondence between Cipolla, Crivellucci and other historians (Villari, Crivellucci) and reopening an unknown page of the history of Italian medievistic scholarship.

In the last decade of the 19th century psychiatric sciences in Italy proposed many psychopathological interpretations of exceptional personalities. An important role was played by the psychiatrist Cesare Lombroso with his books on genius and madness, which inspired other similar research. The case of Dante Alighieri, on whom Lombroso made a diagnosis of epilepsy, is part of this context. The article analyses the main texts (for and against) of this psychiatric-literary affair and clarifies the role of the French doctor Max Durand-Fardel, from whom Lombroso said he took the cue for his diagnosis of epilepsy.

The functions of the biblical Slavic-Russian apocrypha in manuscript collections depend on their perception by the ancient Russian scribes and the literary context of the manuscript. Cognitive, interpretative, magical, historical functions are associated with different genre forms, both book and folk. Particularly considered is the «apocryphal riddle» of two brothers from the manuscript of the XVIth century Stockholm Royal Library and manuscripts of the XVIIIth century collections of the Library of the Russian Academy of Sciences (St. Petersburg).

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Archaeological heritage is social property which contributes to strengthening cultural identity; therefore, the objects, and the knowledge derived from them must be somehow returned to society. Preventive conservation must be applied in all stages the archaeological materials go through: excavation, moving or shipping, laboratory, storage and exhibition. On-site preventive conservation will help to ensure the long-term preservation of finds and information about their manufacture and use. The sudden change in the environment on excavation can cause rapid deterioration of an artefact if not stored in a suitable environment. The objective of a conservator is to minimize the post-excavation impact suffered by objects when they are removed from the ground and to take a series of preventive measures to delay the physical and environmental effects which lead to their deterioration, which are based on the control of the differences between outside and inside ground parameters. Before the excavation, the environment must be assessed, both above and below ground. The soil must be evaluated as to pH, salinity and physical structure. Working in wet contexts is different from working in dry, cold or warm ones. Organic materials are more vulnerable to deterioration factors. If wet organic materials are allowed to dry in an uncontrolled way, there will often be irreversible shrinking, distortion, cracking or collapse. Freshly excavated wet organic materials are vulnerable to biological attacks, particularly mould, due to increased temperatures, oxygen and light. Large or fragile objects will be vulnerable to breakage if they are excavated and handled without being supported. When objects are made up of more than one raw material, preventive measures must protect the material that is most sensitive to deterioration factors.

Abstract (sommario):
Historical and cartographic research about the ghost domus built by Frederick II in Principatus et Terra Beneventana regionDuring his reign Frederick II built a series of representative fortified constructions in southern Italy, and after reinforcing the defence line of the border with the State of the Church, he decided to build many residential estates called domus or palacium in the fundamental medieval textual source of Statutum de reparatione castrorum. This research is focused on the study of the landscape in the ancient region of Principatus et Terra Beneventana during the thirteenth century: it is noticed the presence of five imperial domus cited in the Statutum with the name domus Castellucci Battipallae, castrum et palacium Sarni, domus imperatoris in Ebulo, domus imperatoris Apicii and the Castel Belvedere Marano palace. Every domus was studied through a historical and cartographic analysis, and in case of the structure is not recognised on the territory it was organized a landscape analysis in order to propose a hypothetical position. The data that was gathered into ArcGIS software to define the probable locations of the ghost domus were the detailed routes of ancient roads related to the positions of the casalia (little rural communities that paid taxes to maintenance of the royal structures), the Church properties, the urban site, and the other castra and domus.

Abstract (sommario):
Atlas of fortified settlements in the province of Viterbo, Italy (tenth-fifteenth centuries). Sources and methods for the reconstruction of the late-medieval settlement networkThis study addressed the historical phenomenon known as incastellamento, in the area of the current province of Viterbo, from a quantitative and geographical perspective. The time period considered was the tenth-fifteenth century. The paper describes the documentary sources, historical maps, aerial images, past studies and archaeological sources that are available to researchers, and which have been used, in good measure, to reconstruct the fortified settlement network. Moreover, the paper explains the methodologies used to identify, store and geocode the whole dataset, which so far comes to a total of 191 fortified settlements. In conclusion, we discuss the main characteristics of the online atlas, intended as an open and interoperable platform to consult, query and retrieve information from the dataset of late-medieval fortified settlements.

Abstract (sommario):
The results of pollen spectra and diatoms study within the middle-century settlement of Steklyanukha 2 are presented. The paleolandscape situation was restored and signs of anthropogenic impact on vegetation were identified. Pollen from surface soil reflect the active agricultural development of nearby river valleys from the second half of the 19th century. A study of diatom algae in an ancient pit confirmed the assumption that it was used to store water reserves.

Abstract (sommario):
With housing demands rising in already dense urban environments new housing typologies must be tested. In the seventeenth century the medieval version of the London Bridge addressed issues of a growing city by coupling infrastructure with acts of domesticity included a central chapel, shops, and housing. In 2003 the Porter House by SHoP Architects challenged conventional housing typologies in New York City with their air rights proposal. The Porter House functions on multiple levels and challenges historic conservation and current zoning code. In 2009 twenty-five luxury villas were illegally built by developers on the roof of the multi-story shopping mall inHengyang, China. These examples challenge normative building practices and provide a foundation for further investigation of housing typology and urbanism of the air. In order increase density in land-poor modernizing cities, the architectural discipline must balance the opportunities of air rights proposals over historic buildings by challenging the nostalgic notion of preservation.

Alessandro Camiz ¹ ¹ Department of Architecture, Girne American University, Cyprus, Association for Historical Dialogue and Research, Home for Cooperation (H4C), 28 Marcou Dracou Street, Nicosia, Cyprus, 1102. E-mail: alessandrocamiz@gau.edu.tr Keywords (3-5): urban tissues, urban morphology, urban routes, theory, history Conference topics and scale: Tools of analysis in urban morphology Recent urban morphology studies consider urban tissues as living organisms changing in time (Strappa, Carlotti, Camiz, 2016), following this assumption the theory should examine more analytically what Muratori called ‘medievalisation’ (Muratori, 1959), a term describing some of the transformations of urban routes happened in the middle ages. The paper considers the diachronic deformation of routes, and other multi-scalar occurrences of the attraction phenomena (Charalambous, Geddes, 2015), introducing the notion of attractors and repellers. Archaeological studies already do consider attractors and repellers as a tool to interpret some territorial transformations, following the assumption that “the trajectory that a system follows through time is the result of a continuous dynamic interaction between that system and the multiple 'attractors' in its environment” (Renfrew, Bahn, 2013, p. 184). There are different elements that can act as attractors in an urban environment, such as bridges, city walls, city gates, water systems, markets, special buildings, and it is possible to consider each of these anthropic attractors as equivalent to a morphological attractor at the geographical scale. We can even interpret the ridge-top theory (Caniggia, 1976) as the result of attraction and repellence of geographic features on anthropic routes. The territorial scale analysis is the methodological base of the theory, but the attractors herein considered operate at the urban scale, deviating locally across time from a rectilinear trajectory and defining a specific urban fabric. The research interprets and reads the effects of attractors on urban routes and fabrics as a method for the reconstruction of Nicosia’s medieval city walls, in continuity between the Conzenian approach (Whitehand, 2012) and the Italian School of Urban Morphology (Marzot, 2002). Abstract (sommario):
The problem of the reconstruction of centres of Polish towns and cities after the destructions of the World War II evoke discussions even today. Over the first years after the war, in numerous cases the centres of historical cities and towns were lost; in the place of former market squares and networks of streets with tenements crowned with endwall trims, randomly dispersed concrete blocks of flats were erected, in order to satisfy urgent housing demands. The situation changed after 1980, when in Elbląg, Gdańsk, Szczecin, Kołobrzeg, a rule was adopted according to which the peripheral development of city quarters was to be recreated, restoring tenements located in historical plots of land, but contemporary in style, maintaining the silhouettes and sizes from years before. It is also possible to observe other activities in the solutions of the latest public utility buildings, which - often by using a sophisticated intellectual play - restore the climate and character of cities remembered and known from the past centuries. In the west and north of Europe there are many towns and cities, predominantly ports, which used to be members of Hansa. The organisation of Hansa, the origins of which reach back to the Middle Ages, associated a number of cities which could decide about the provision of goods to cities within a specific territory, and secure markets for products manufactured in them. Thanks to that, cities that belonged to Hansa were developing more rapidly and effectively, and the beginnings of their development within the territory of Germany and in the Baltic states date back to the 13th and 14th centuries. The peak period of the development of Hanseatic cities, where merchants were engaged in free trade with people from European countries, fell in the 14th and 15th centuries, but already in the 17th century there was a complete decline of Hansa, resulting from the occurrence of competition in the form of associations of Dutch and English cities, as well as the Scandinavian ones. From amongst Polish towns and cities, members of Hansa were e.g. Szczecin, Gdańsk, Kołobrzeg, Elbląg, as well as Cracow. In 1980 an association of partner cities of North Europe, dubbed a New Hansa, was established, the objective of which is to attract attention to the common development of tourism and trade. Nowadays, this New Hansa associates over a hundred cities, similarly to what once was in the medieval Hansa. Numerous Polish cities faced the problem of reconstruction after the destruction of the World War II. The effects varied. By adopting the programme of satisfying predominantly housing demands in the 1960s and 1970s, historical old towns in dozens of cities from amongst nearly 2 hundred destroyed by warfare of the World War II in the north and west of Poland were lost forever. Today we can still encounter ruins of Gothic churches in Głogów or Gubin, where in the place of a market square and tenements of townsmen, randomly located rows of typical four- or five-storey blocks of flats have been erected.
