Morris, Jeffery Thomas. "Risk, Language, and Power: The Nanotechnology Environmental Policy Case". Diss., Virginia Tech, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/29195.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In this dissertation I explore discourse around the environmental risks of nanotechnology, and through this study of nanotechnology make the case that the dominance in risk discourse of regulatory science is limiting policy debate on environmental risks, and that specific initiatives should be undertaken to broaden debate not just on nanotechnology, but generally on the risks of new technologies. I argue that the treatment of environmental risk in public policy debates has failed for industrial chemicals, is failing for nanotechnology, and most certainly will fail for synthetic biology and other new technologies unless we change how we describe the impacts to people and other living things from the development and deployment of technology. However, I also contend that the nanotechnology case provides reason for optimism that risk can be given different, and better, treatment in environmental policy debates. I propose specific policy initiatives to advance a richer discourse around the environmental implications of emerging technologies. Evidence of enriched environmental policy debates would be a decentering of language concerning risk by developing within discourse language and practice directed toward enriching the human and environmental condition.

Spinazola, Lisa Pia Zonni. "Lives on the (story)Line: Group Facilitation with Men in Recovery at The Salvation Army". Scholar Commons, 2018. https://scholarcommons.usf.edu/etd/7366.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In this dissertation, I seek to examine the effects of purposeful journaling and guided storytelling on past traumas, perception of current lives, and the development of new coping skills among men at The Salvation Army’s residential adult rehabilitation center (ARC). All residents of the ARC must attend Christian-based devotional services, go to Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.) meetings, follow the A.A. 12-step program, and sign up for several weekly counseling and educational groups, one of which is the “Guided Journaling and Storytelling” group I lead. The men who attended this group are (1) addicted to drugs and/or alcohol, (2) face homelessness, (3) cope with some form of mental or physical health issue, (4) may have criminal records, and (5) have alienated most of their social support. Through a twelve-week curriculum I developed, I introduced coping skills—building resilience, expressive writing, and deep breathing—while incorporating art, music, and poetry in the groups. I elicited participants’ stories through prompts, using my own experiences to model vulnerability and demonstrate concepts, such as: narrative reframing; how memories can be uncertain, partial, and elusive; how storytelling can prompt forgotten stories; and the efficacy of including emotion and rich details in the stories we tell. Knowing the value of writing and storytelling, I set out to see if the communicative practices I had learned in the past that had improved my life situation might assist others to write themselves out of destructive patterns, desperation, and trauma, and into sober and more fulfilling lives.

Cohen, Josef. "Outcomes of a marketing knowledge intervention using a metaphoric story-line approach : a mixed-methods study of 5 Israeli SMEs". Thesis, University of Derby, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10545/621618.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this mixed-methods research is to determine the effectiveness of the Kingdom Marketing (KM) intervention for improving Israeli SME marketing knowledge among managers and employees of Israeli small and medium-sized business. The secondary objective of the study was to portray the process of change in participating organisations. The newly developed KM intervention programme was designed to enhance Israeli SMEs’ marketing knowledge and marketing strategy, imparting new marketing skills and allowing SMEs to operate with better marketing knowledge. The intervention uses a metaphoric story-line approach to teach participants in mediator-led sessions to understand and use important marketing concepts, such as the difference between sales and marketing. Although the intervention has been used in business settings, it has not yet been empirically validated using rigorous methods. This study was conducted using a mixed methods paradigm with an embedded experimental design. Five Israeli based SMEs were recruited to take part in the training programme. The research consisted of three phases. In Phase 1, I administered a preintervention evaluation to measure five variables: awareness of marketing processes, mistaken marketing attitudes, incorrect marketing process beliefs, organisational marketing skills, and marketing need awareness. Participants were also interviewed during Phase 1. In Phase 2, I administered the KM intervention and collected qualitative data in the form of daily open-ended feedback and a researcher diary. In Phase 3, I administered a postintervention evaluation to assess change in the five quantitative variables, and I conducted a second round of interviews. The findings indicated that the KM intervention programme (a) increased awareness of marketing processes, (b) reduced mistaken marketing attitudes, (c) reduced incorrect marketing process believes, and (d) increased marketing need awareness. However, the intervention had no significant effect on organisational marketing skills. Qualitative analysis confirmed that, although the KM intervention empowered participants with marketing knowledge and skills, it did not result in broad organisational changes. I conclude that the KM intervention programme is valid and worthy of wider use for promoting the survival of SME businesses through marketing knowledge and skill improvement. However, the intervention should be used in conjunction with internal efforts to translate increased knowledge into lasting organisational change.

Abstract (sommario):
In this bachelor thesis we research and discuss a theme that has been the focus for many feminist figures and groups in both older and recent content where they clash together in an effort to find a solution to a problem that has been plaguing our society. The problem being; a lack in diversity inside Game development companies and creation, thus our question becomes; how can We include or encourage more women to enter the digital world and participate in programming and game making. The methods that has been chosen for this thesis range from Critical Design: to design and create a unique game of our own, Interviews: to question women from different backgrounds and ages to find out what they want/wish for regarding games, to Kanban: where we use it to get our project together. All while linking this entire thesis to Situated Knowledge concept where we dive in deeper to what it means in the discussion part and how in our results we discoverer a way that we individually can use to change the gaming industry and its involvement.

Boross, De Levay Catherine. "The potentials that positioning theory as an analytical framework can offer to understand the professional identity and social engagement of the expatriate teacher in the context of international schools". Thesis, University of Bath, 2013. https://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.665373.

Abstract (sommario):
The present inquiry sets out to explore the self as an expatriate eacher working in international schools, through the lens of ositioning. To better understand complex phenomena such as the self and its episodic encounters in the social arena, this study uses positioning theory as an analytical framework. The self is followed as it moves from its private sphere to the social milieu where it takes on its multiplicity, as a social being. The dynamics of positioning is illustrated by the mutually determined triad. Hence, the self is looked at in one of its main social engagements: the recruitment where the social episode is mutually framed by the storylines of the participants, the social force and the position taken on. Illustrations are given to exemplify and extend the use of positioning theory in an international school context. The implications brought up by the results of the present inquiry are applicable not only to the expatriate teacher but also to the wider expatriate community.

Cruikshank, Julie. "Life lived like a story : cultural constructions of life history by Tagish and Tutchone women". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1987. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/41444.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is based on collaborative research conducted over ten years with three elders of Athapaskan/Tlingit ancestry, in the southern Yukon Territory, Canada Mrs. Angela Sidney, Mrs. Kitty Smith and Mrs. Annie Ned are also authors of this document because their oral accounts of their lives are central to the discussion. One volume examines issues of method and ethnographic writing involved in such research and analyses the accounts provided by these women; a second volume presents their accounts, in their own words, in three appendices. The thesis advanced here is that life history offers two distinct contributions to anthropology. As a method, it provides a model based on collaboration between participants rather than research 'by' an anthropologist 'on' the community. As ethnography, it shows how individuals may use the traditional dimension of culture as a resource to talk about their lives, and explores the extent to which it is possible f or anthropologists to write ethnography grounded in the perceptions and experiences of people whose lives they describe. Narrators provide complex explanations for their experiences and decisions in metaphoric language, raising questions about whether anthropological categories like 'individual', 'society' and 'culture' are uniquely bounded units. The analysis focusses on how these women attach central importance to traditional stories (particularly those with female protagonists), to named landscape features, to accounts of travel, and to inclusion of incidents from the lives of others in their narrated 'life histories'. Procedures associated with both life history analysis and the analysis of oral tradition are used to consider the dynamics of narration. Particular attention is paid to how these women use oral tradition both to talk about the past and to continue to teach younger people appropriate behavior in the present. The persistence of oral tradition as a system of communication and information in the north when so much else has changed suggests that expressive forms like story telling contribute to strategies for adapting to social, economic and cultural change.

Fransman, Jolene. "Literary non-fiction and the unstable fault line of the imaginative and the reportorial : Antjie Krog’s, Country of my skull, Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela’s, A human being died that night and Sindiwe Magona’s, Mother to mother". Thesis, Stellenbosch : Stellenbosch University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/71882.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University, 2012.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This thesis explores the representation of personal narrative and nationhood within the genre of literary non-fiction written around the theme of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The texts to be examined are Antjie Krog‟s, Country of My Skull, Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela‟s A Human Being Died That Night and Sindiwe Magona‟s Mother to Mother. The texts by Krog and Gobodo-Madikizela tell the story of apartheid‟s legacy from two different viewpoints. Their texts are filled with spatial patches of personal narrative which emphasize the impact apartheid had on two different South African cultures, thereby linking the personal to the national by exploring a subjective truth in their narratives. Both these authors were involved with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) in a professional capacity and through their respective ideologies the psyche of the apartheid perpetrator is examined, interrogated and analysed. Within the genre of literary non-fiction these two writers grapple with capturing the real, the objective, but simultaneously insist on doing so from a subjective vantage point. Sindiwe Magona‟s, Mother to Mother also centres on the theme of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission and on the psyche of the perpetrator. This time, however, the perpetrator‟s psyche is explored through the lens of a narrator-mother in an address to the victim‟s mother. The most significant difference between this text and the other two is that the Magona text provides a fictional account of the TRC case in question. The ethical implications of a literary text with documentary subject matter, of a text that explores the intersections between fiction and non-fiction, surfaces again, and to a larger extent than in the other two texts, thereby further unsettling the line between the reportorial and the imaginative.
Die tekste wat ondersoek word is Antjie Krog se Country of My Skull, Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela se A Human Being Died That Night en Sindiwe Magona se Mother to Mother.

Breed, Sarah. "The Life Story of a Liberatory Educator". Thesis, Mills College, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3617650.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):

Rooted in Freirean pedagogy and using the Life Story Interview as a methodological tool, this dissertation research provides insight into the preparation, performance, and resilience of urban high school teachers and explores the viability of the Life Story Approach to reveal an alternative means of researching a teacher's approach to instructional pedagogy. This dissertation examines how a White female teacher's life story has informed her liberatory approach to teaching writing as an act of freedom in her urban high school classroom in Oakland, California. Observations of how the formation of a teacher's identity and instructional approach were influenced by her experiences in the world are explored in her story. This dissertation argues that if liberatory approaches and a critical literacy framework were considered within the context of seminal research on secondary writing instruction, teacher preparation programs and instructional pedagogy in urban classrooms would be compelled to change. These approaches are necessary to raise the critical consciousness of urban educators committed to serving low- income students of color in our nation's public schools and to inform instructional pedagogy and transform urban students' experiences in school and society. Implications for teacher preparation and approaches to curriculum development are considered.

Henderson, Lesley M. "Social issue story lines in British soap opera". Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2002. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/6541/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis examines the factors which influenced how social issue story lines were developed in the areas of sexual violence, breast cancer and mental distress in British soap opera in the mid to late 1990's. The soap opera production process was examined by conducting interviews with members of production teams from different programmes. This core study was contextualised by additional interviews with production personnel working in other areas of television (e.g. documentary). Spokespeople from different organisations who consulted on story lines or lobbied around different issues were also interviewed. In total, 64 interviews were conducted. The influence of soap story lines on public understandings of an issue was explored in an audience reception study of sexual violence in Brookside (12 focus groups). The soap opera production study identified a number of factors which influence story line development (socio - cultural positioning of the substantive topic, broadcast hierarchy and commercial imperatives). The comparative study of mental distress identified some cross genre constraints (narrative pace, commercial imperatives) and some genre specific issues (access to people with mental health problems). The audience study revealed that people bring their social knowledge of an issue to their viewing experience. Research participants 'read' the meanings of Brookside's story line in remarkably uniform ways however some participants responded differently to certain elements of the story (rejecting empathy with the 'collusive' mother). The story line was demonstrated to have made a lasting impact on Brookside viewers (in relation to the conflicting emotions of the abused child). There were also identifiable links between the intentions of the production team, the nature of representation and audiences responses.

Renew thyself completely each day; do it again, and again, and forever again.Jon Kabat-Zinn, Wherever You Go There You AreThe above quotation sums up my feelings about this thesis. By reviewing my life I feel a sense of renewal. I think that my memories are true and accurate. My story certainly is a living memory of my time. I have found that in telling my story I have purged myself of much of my past and refreshed myself in mind and spirit.I start my story by reviewing the three artists who have influenced my work over the past two years, Squeak Carnwath, Jean Hammond and Nancy Spero.I then give a chronological resume of my life to date: my time as a mother, teacher and artist. I describe some of my earlier works together with the moods and emotions which accompanied them. The latter part of the chapter deals with my life in the United States and how my work is developing and the many influences which are helping in this process. In Chapter 3, I talk about my imagery and my latest thoughts as an artist, and go on to describe the paintings which make up the exhibition which accompanies this thesis. Finally, I have attempted to evaluate the fragments of my life, fragments which make up the whole. This is my catharsis. I have released much of myself and my inhibitions. I have absorbed a variety of stimuli and felt a multitude of sensations. My emotions have ebbed to and fro, and in retelling my story I have renewed myself.

Sharifimonfared, Ghazaleh. "Pathways through MDMA use : a qualitative life story study". Thesis, University of Hull, 2016. http://hydra.hull.ac.uk/resources/hull:15621.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
MDMA is a popular psychoactive drug that is highly associated with raves and clubbing culture. Consumers experience feelings of euphoria, joy, and confidence. Despite the considerable research on MDMA, non-problematic aspects of use remain under researched. The aim of this study was to understand MDMA use and pathways into and out of consumption. More specifically, the research examines the experience of ex-heavy MDMA users through their MDMA journeys. This qualitative study employed an online questionnaire inspired by the Life Story Approach. Participants were recruited using ethnographic research methods and through related online forums. The inclusion criterion was individuals who self-identified as ex-heavy MDMA users, who have now cut down or completely stopped MDMA use. 104 former heavy MDMA users were surveyed. Data was analysed thematically from which six main categories were identified: Journey; Polydrug use; Role of drugs during consumption; Changes in drug use pattern; Changes in life; and Advice. A common positive tone runs through all the themes, and most reported negativity is due to drug use as a whole. Data analysis highlighted Harm reduction and Function and pleasure enhancement as important overarching themes for participants. MDMA was generally used in specific settings to enhance an event or experience, such as music related events. But MDMA also enhanced intimacy, social bonding, meditation, and was used by some as a cognitive enhancer and therapeutic aid helping to think and feel differently. Many described positive psychological and social effects of use that remained after MDMA use, and often lasted permanently. Although a stop or a cut-down in MDMA use is often a natural process, it could still be cut-down or stopped actively by making lifestyle changes such as distancing oneself from the associated scenes and people. The results of this study bring a foundation of understanding MDMA use and pathways into and out of frequent use, which could particularly be useful in designing appropriate harm reduction programs and inform policy making. Likewise, present findings could help to address further aspects of MDMA use and non-problematic drug use in general.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In order to meet the increasing demand for spectrum to support future DoD test and evaluation (T&E) requirements in an environment of decreasing spectrum availability, the DoD requires new spectrum aggregation and spectrum management technologies. Advanced radio technologies that sense and aggregate non-contiguous blocks of spectrum into a larger communication channel capable of supporting higher user data rates are needed. Moreover, the T&E community must more effectively manage and use the spectrum that is available to it, and utilize new paradigms in which spectrum is dynamically allocated on a non-interference basis to multiple, concurrent users and in a way that meets both planned and unplanned changes to mission requirements, and real time channel conditions, factoring in both Federal and non-Federal users of spectrum. The objective of the Adaptive Spectrum Aggregation and Management (ASAM) project is to develop technologies that will sense available spectrum, aggregate white space within fragmented frequency bands to create communication channels, and dynamically allocate those channels across multiple range users using algorithms that increase spectrum utilization and efficiency while applying policy constraints. The ASAM project is sponsored by the Test Resource Management Center (TRMC) and was awarded in 2016 through the National Spectrum Consortium. This paper will describe the ASAM project and technical challenges associated with its development.

Abstract (sommario):
This study utilized life history as a methodological tool to explore the identity formation of Mary, a woman in her eighties who is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. The results of this study showed that Mary's sense of self was greatly influenced by her childhood experiences. Five predominate themes emerged in the interview process: Mary's admiration for her father, her willingness to share wisdom, her career as a beautician, her role as a mother, and her devotion as a wife. The Dynamical Identity Model was constructed to help further illustrate Mary's identity development and the model served as a basis to describe possible outcomes in Mary's life, as a woman diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. Her story reveals that Mary has a wonderful disposition about life and, even though she was diagnosed with this disease, she does not perceive the disease as threatening.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis (MA)--Stellenbosch University. 2015
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Seeking to explore modes of self-representation in women’s life writing and the ways in which these subjects manipulate the autobiographical ‘I’ to write about gender, the body, race and ethnic related issues, this thesis interrogates the autobiographies of three renegade women whose works were birthed out of the de/colonial South African context between 1854-1948. The chosen texts are: Marina King’s Sunrise to Evening Star: My Seventy Years in South Africa (1935), Melina Rorke’s Melina Rorke: Her Amazing Experiences in the Stormy Nineties of South-African History (1938), and two memoirs by Petronella van Heerden, Kerssnuitsels (1962) and Die 16de Koppie (1965). My analysis is underpinned by relevant life writing and feminist criticism, such as the notion of female autobiographical “embodiment” (239) and the ‘I’s reliance on “relationality” (248) as discussed in the work of Sidonie Smith and Julia Watson (Reading Autobiography). I further draw on Judith Butler’s concept of “performativity” (Bodies that Matter 234) in my analysis in order to suggest that there is a performative aspect to the female ‘I’ in these texts. The aim of this thesis is to illustrate how these self-representations of women can be read as counter-conventional, speaking out against stereotypical perceptions and conventions of their time and in literatures (fiction and criticism) which cast women as tractable, compliant pertaining to patriarchal oversight, as narrow-minded and apathetic regarding achieving notoriety and prominence beyond their ascribed position in their separate societies. I argue that these works are representative of alternative female subjectivities and are examples of South African women’s life writing which lie ‘dusty’ and forgotten in archives; voices that are worthy of further scholarly research which would draw the stories of women’s lives back into the literary consciousness.

Edmonds, Poff Allison Ruth. "Exploring women's life course experiences with weight using story theory". Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2011. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/4885.

Abstract (sommario):
Themes that were identified relative to participants' experiences with their weight included: changes associated with emotional and physical health; eating patterns associated with multiple and/or changing roles/relationships; and, changes in the environment. An interpretation of the predominant pattern of weight gain included: changes in eating and physical activity that occur during multiple and simultaneous transitional life experiences, primarily in adulthood. The findings suggest that transitional experiences in women's lives - physiological, developmental, relational or environmental - were critical in that they presented risk for behavior changes related to eating and physical activity. The results of this study and the use of story theory have implications for providing individualized, patient-centered lifestyle recommendations for the prevention of unhealthy weight gain.; This qualitative study included women who had gone through the menopausal transition and had experienced obesity, and it focused on their weight histories and experiences across the life course. The goal of this research was to add to the body of knowledge concerning weight gain by applying a novel middle range theory (story theory). Story theory was used to collect and interpret from women's life course stories the critical themes and patterns of their weight gain. Oral accounts were elicited during personal interviews from a convenience sample of ten women recruited from a weight loss and exercise program in Central Florida. Literature focusing on the prevalence of obesity, contributing factors and associated complications, as well as treatment approaches is extensive. A variety of approaches have been proposed to identify factors that contribute to the development of obesity across the lifespan. Ultimately, the goal of these studies is to understand risk factors for weight gain along with corresponding prevention and management strategies. A particular life course approach focuses on critical periods across the life span that may be associated with risk for the development of obesity. For women, puberty, pregnancy and menopause are noted to be critical for weight change in the life course as they are associated with hormonal changes and changes in body composition including fat mass. Story theory was chosen to conceptualize and guide participants through a personal interview in order to share their weight experiences along their life course. Content analysis procedures were used to analyze the data in order to identify themes and corresponding verbatim exemplars. A re-constructed composite story was developed that included excerpts from the participants' stories in order to reveal contextualized results.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis analyzes the life histories of women who served in the Second World War British auxiliary services (the Auxiliary Territorial Service, the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force, and the Women’s Royal Naval Service) who migrated to Canada as war brides (the wives or fiancées of Canadian servicemen). It argues that understandings of womanhood which connect ideal femininity with domesticity operate on the ways in which war bride veterans view themselves as veterans and how they remember their experiences as servicewomen. In their oral histories, these women portrayed themselves both in accordance with and in opposition to traditional feminine roles. However, identities associated with traditional femininity such as ‘sweetheart,’ ‘wife,’ ‘mother,’ and ‘grandmother’ were frequently most prevalent. My findings indicate that war brides who had more satisfying and smooth transitions to Canadian life generally remember and emphasize their war bride past over their military history and view themselves as having a Canadian identity. Alternatively, those who had more difficult experiences of migration gain composure in remembering their experiences as servicewomen since these experiences were less troubling and complicated. These women tend to assert their British identities. This project contributes to scholarship in gender history, memory studies, and studies of migration though unpacking how cultural discourses regarding gender in wartime and national identity intersect with stories of migration in the life history narratives of war bride veterans. It provides a new framework for the study of women in war in Britain, as well as war bride history in Canada. This thesis produced and draws from eighteen comprehensive life history interviews with war bride veterans. Part I begins with a chapter exploring theoretical concepts setting out the combined material and cultural epistemology of this project, including popular memory theory, as well as understandings of gender and nationality that assisted the methodology developed for analyzing war bride veterans’ narratives in relation to historical and cultural research. This methodology based on the work of T.G. Ashplant, Graham Dawson, Michael Roper, and Richard Johnson, recognizes the circular and nuanced relationships people have with cultural codes and memories. The historical context chapter examines historical understandings regarding appropriate roles for men and women in wartime through primary source research and contemporary gender historical theory. It also examines how war brides have been recognized in Canadian cultural memory. Part II applies this work with three chapters centred on life history interviews with Wendy Turner, Victoria Sparrow, and Penny MacDonald (pseudonyms).

Connelly, Ruth Ellen. "The redemptive life story of Glenda Watson-Kahlenberg: a psychobiography". Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1019690.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This psychobiography is focused on the life of Glenda Watson-Kahlenberg, whose life history epitomises the redemptive theme of triumph over tragedy. A phenomenological approach to the study allowed the researcher to observe the participant‟s lived experience through the theoretical lens of Frankl‟s conceptualization of a meaningful and full existence. A holistic perspective of factors contributing to redemption was accommodated by the Biopsychosocial-spiritual Model. The aim of this longitudinal revelatory study was to illuminate the process of redemption in a life, which leads to restoration and wholeness. This study breaks with traditional psychobiography – in that a life in progress has been selected; and personality development is not the key focus. This psychobiographical undertaking was anchored in qualitative research in the form of a single case study. Four types of triangulation were utilized, namely: data, investigators, theory and methodological triangulation. In addition, Alexander‟s identifiers of saliency, Miles and Huberman‟s data-management guidelines, Schultz‟s prototypical scenes, and Guba‟s criteria for trustworthiness, guided the methodology to ensure reliable data extraction and interpretation. The present researcher was in search of a deeper understanding of the enabling factors facilitating a restorative process in a life that was challenged by setbacks. Given the increasing pressures facing individuals in this modern era, the redemptive theme holds particular relevance, and was graphically demonstrated in the life of the participant who experienced trauma, widowhood, divorce, single parenthood, and a spate of medical and psychological setbacks. The findings suggest that the mental health clinician‟s utilisation of Frankl‟s conceptualisation of meaning in the most challenging circumstances, proffers itself as an all-purpose life-tool which enables individuals to overcome their challenges. The study demonstrated that gaining meaning in life is inextricably tied to an implicit legacy-oriented worldview. Of significance, is the role of forgiveness which emerged as the central redemptive catalyst. In this study, the resolution of past hurts through forgiveness, and the search for meaning, merge, forming an arterial theme in the life story of the participant. The dual impact of these factors not only reversed contaminated life-scripts, it also birthed a new calling in life which set the participant on a generative life course. The findings related to a redemptive life not only confirms existing theory, but also adds perspectives not previously considered. In addition, the findings related to the role of forgiveness has positive implications for the individual‟s physical and psychological wellbeing. Greater intentionality on the part of therapists to thread forgiveness into their practice, remains invitational in the light of the eugraphic impact demonstrated in this study.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study has been to examine how elderly people in today’s society look upon themselves and experience their own aging. We have inquired answers to the following main questions: What main events during the life course are emphasized in the elderly’s stories about their lives, and in what way has it affected their experience of growing old? In what way have social relationships, interests and the experience of health changed during the life course? How do the elderly experience their own aging, and what emotions are expressed in the speech surrounding their life course? The results of the study have been analyzed and interpreted with the help of the life course theory, Erikson’s psychosocial development theory and the continuity theory. The results show that elderly people of today don’t feel their age. They consider themselves to be young in mind though experiencing their aging through reduced mobility.

Abstract (sommario):
Thesis advisor: Lillie R. Albert
Why do mathematics teachers’ beliefs and instructional practices differ, and why are some teachers’ beliefs aligned or misaligned with their instructional practices? This qualitative case study investigated how eight Korean elementary teachers’ sociocultural life stories shaped their mathematical beliefs and practices. The specific aim was to explore through mathematics-related life stories the relationship between the elementary teachers’ mathematical beliefs and instructional practices. The overarching research question was: “How does a theoretical model based on sociocultural theory (Albert, 2012; Vygotsky, 1978) explain the relationship among the Korean elementary teachers’ life stories, the development of their beliefs, and their instructional practices?” The findings of this study indicate that the teachers’ attribution of their unsuccessful teaching experiences contributed to their perception about the value of continuing their own learning and development, which, sequentially, influenced the construction of their current beliefs about mathematics teaching and learning. Their pedagogical beliefs for teaching mathematics were likely to have an impact on their attitude toward implementing student-centered or teacher-centered instructional practices. Additionally, the teachers’ knowledge and self-efficacy beliefs about teaching mathematics influenced this relationship, resulting in different levels of alignment and even misalignment. Thus, teachers used their past mathematics learning and teaching experiences to justify their current beliefs and practices and to explain their classroom culture. These findings resonate with scholarship pertaining to mathematics teachers’ knowledge, beliefs, and instructional practices and contribute further to their developing theory about teachers’ life stories by illustrating how teachers’ life stories play out in a complex mathematics classroom environment

Abstract (sommario):
This study examines the process and procedures employed by storytellers to craft an oral historical narrative. Contemporary storytellers are working toward a transferable methodology and this work is an effort toward that end. Using the various procedures described by nearly 20 storytellers, a single process is assembled. The methodology is then tested, checking for transferability. The case study used to test the methodology is based on the life of Emmeline B. Wells, the fifth Relief Society President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Wells was born in Massachusetts and emigrated to the west in 1848. She edited a leading suffrage paper of her time, The Woman's Exponent. Wells also worked, unsuccessfully, to repeal anti-polygamy laws. Engaging the methodology, through the means of this case study, the paper outlines both the contemporary storytellers' crafting processes as well as her own experiences. As gaps in the descriptive model are noted, techniques are discovered to strengthen the procedure. Through replication of this process, insight will be provided into a transferable methodology.

Instant messaging plays an important role of advanced technology for communication in this Internet age. Sometimes complex emotions that beyond description cannot be accurately expressed by words, people tend to use simple stickers to deliver or imply messages, feelings or even their moods in an exaggeratedly way. Through the narrative characteristics in stickers, an emotional transmission of communication can be enhanced and improved. This study reviews the literature on the popular selling user-generated LINE stickers on March 5th, 2016 and collect samples from it. To begin, the author conducts a focus group with ten participants, then select the first 100 LINE stickers as samples based upon its sales situation, graphic-and-text imagery, functionality and image designing. In addition, the KJ method is adopted to discuss the key factors of LINE sticker imagery. From the discussion, it can be seen that there are six factors including the themes, the symbols, the meanings, the techniques, the creativities and the forms. Turning to the end, we deduced four key principles of sticker making, which are the materials, the symbol designing, the language and the brightness/hue of the color. The author will consolidate the results obtained from the KJ method with the practical data from 11 sets of stickers. The making of these stickers is starting from June, 2015, over 500 pieces of conceptual drafts were drawn, and a total of 440 pieces of stickers were created. Finally, we will select the best-selling set consisted of 40 stickers for analysis, and explain the symbolic meanings of the popular ones in detail. After drawing our own conclusions from the results in this paper, we expected to provide reference for relevant researchers and sticker designers.

This study aims to provide life insurance agents and companies a SINGLE-LINE STORE marketing channel that integrates agents and on-spot sales through sales channel analysis. It helps to overcome the current difficulties and to ensure winning in the plural channel competition, and further brings opportunities of success in SINGLE-LINE STORE sales. The study conducts SWOT analysis from such five dimensions that impact SINGLE-LINE STORE sale services as technology, politics, economics, industry and society, and explains the leverage effect resulting from the advantages and opportunities. The effect is built upon the "channel character" of SINGLE-LINE STORE as well as the "cross selling character" of life insurance. The "service character" of life insurance SINGLE-LINE STORE sales referred in this study integrates the SINGLE-LINE STORE channel and life insurance cross selling characters. The "service character" thus becomes the key to creating the leverage effect. In brief, if one can give the "service character" of the life insurance SINGLE-LINE STORE sales in full play, one will naturally grab the opportunity of success in hand. Based on the analysis, the study indicates that once the life insurance SINGLE-LINE STORE sale services utilize the " service character", the opportunity of success will be manipulatable. Through the "value chain" implementation in life insurance SINGLE-LINE STORE applications, the "service character" can be fully utilized. As a consequence, to implement the life insurance SINGLE-LINE STORE "value chain" will help effectively grabbing the opportunity of success so as to largely improve the possibility of winning in life insurance SINGLE-LINE STORE sales management.

The paper was based upon the personal narrative of the author and the reflection upon these multiple woman roles. After operating these roles in the stage of my life very hard for many years, I felt confused when losing the applause. The questions lingered in my mind. "What exactly happens?" Through the process of self- narrative , I could renew my strength for action, which made me "discovering" and "clarifying" the cocoon of my heart. Through the point of critical sociology, I explored "Who am I "from "ugly duckling" childhood and study experiences to "Swan" teaching processes. I felt bound by the recognized mainstream culture framework. To study the literature and the dialogue with the students, I perceived the external authority of myself but the inferiority of my inner side. Through spiritual curriculum, learning to dialogue with my inner, I found that "fearfulness" and "courtship" had guided my life model over thirty years. Although I was eager to other's applause, but I often had to work behind the scenes because of fear. Through the study of psychology, I learned to accept and support the unique of each person's life. I had gone through this process of deconstruction and reconstructed the framework of my inner .I got more understanding to seek love and accepted myself. With the feelings of pleasure, I will continue playing my multiple roles in my stage of life.

Therefore, this study makes use of «Jian Ji’s prison diary », oral history and other materials to explain and discuss Chen He’s life experiences. The main purpose of this study is to realize the role in family and society of a political victim’s wife who suffered through Taiwan peasant-movement in Japanese colonial period and White Terror, and her inner characteristics, adaptation and changes when she confronted political persecution. Accordingly, this study found the fact that females always can take up the heavy responsibility when males cannot earn their livelihood. Chen He held an important position in her family and nurtured her children hardly under the government surveillance, mental pressure and social discrimination; besides, she never stopped helping the poor even though she has already dropped in the plight. Consequently, her religion—Buddhism let her forget sadness to live unflinchingly and then be absorbed in Buddhist practice assiduously in her late life.

This study aimed to explore life story narratives of the storytelling mothers. The researcher employed a method of narrative analysis to explore two storytelling mothers' life story by conducting semi-structured in-depth interviews. The narrative texts were analyzed by the holistic-content analytic method. The research findings were as follows: first, after facing the challenge and frustration with house working and child rearing, two storytelling mothers choose to join the voluntary services. Second, with the experiences of being storytelling mothers, they not only improved their interaction with families but also gained senses of achievement, happiness, personal growth and change. Finally, storytelling mothers shared experience and feelings with listeners (children) by integrating their own life story into stories, which made the story close to listener’s life experience, and made their stories alive. In the mean time, while they were narrating their life stories, they would also reconstruct past experience to inspire themselves new life meanings. The researcher hoped that this study would increase the understanding of storytelling mothers’ life stories. In the end, the researcher provided suggestions for practices and future studies according to the study process and results.

A high proportion of adults with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) , according to the literature, have insecure attachment. Meanwhile, the type of attachment they have to their parents can impact their romantic attachment to their partners. Their ADHD symptoms and growth experiences also challenge the way they interact with their partners. Although the adult ADHDs’ marriage quality and divorce rates have drawn much international attention, there still lacks adequate research of this issue at the domestic level. Hence, this study aimed at two aspects: 1. To understand the attachment styles of adults with ADHD and their interactions with their partners in order to advance the future study on ADHD and romantic relationships. 2. To explore how adults with ADHD raise their self-awareness and co-exist with ADHD in order to explore ways of transforming their predicaments and cultivate positive power. This study applied narrative inquiry and conducted in-depth interviews to examine the worldview of adults with ADHD. Through their life stories, the researcher could analyze the interactive effects among symptoms, partner interactions, and attachment type. The research findings revealed that without parents’ "secure base" during infancy, the adults with ADHD would develop lower self-esteem and self-efficacy. However, low self-esteem is not necessarily an impediment to development. It actually depends on whether the individual could transform his or her low self-esteem into a driving force for change. Individuals who understand the influence ADHD has on them would have better chance to reestablish a positive self-concept. During their interactions with their partners, adults with ADHD are inclined to suffer from the intrusion of their symptoms, such as forgetfulness, impatience, and the gradual loss of emotional control. While the creativity and high mobility of adults with ADHD might bring joy to their partners, their defense mechanisms could exert influence on their romantic attachments. They might also have worries arising from their fear of not being loved or misconception of their existence being a mistake. There demands many efforts to guide them value themselves. The partners of adults ADHD have power to change their attachment behaviors. The more adults with ADHD feel being accepted with their partners understanding, patience and tolerance, the more positive outcomes could be expected. Partner interaction is often an important component of developing a successful strategy to help adults with ADHD. It is quite helpful for them to receive immediate feedback or support from their partners when they show improvements. Recommendations for adults with ADHD and their partners, and for future research were proposed in this study in the hope that they will benefit future research and their love journey.
