Abstract (sommario):
Abstract A real-valued function f on R is strongly countably continuous provided that there is a sequence of continuous functions (fn)n∈N such that the graph of f is contained in the union of the graphs of fn. Some examples of interesting strongly countably continuous functions are given: one for which the inverse function is not strongly countably continuous, another which is an additive discontinuous function with a big image and a function which is approximately and I-approximately continuous, but it is not strongly countably continuous.

Abstract (sommario):
In this thesis, we investigate the properties of one-dimensional bosons in various types of systems, focusing on the phase transitions or crossovers between different quantum degeneracy regimes. Combining quantum Monte Carlo with other standard techniques such as exact diagonalization and thermal Bethe ansatz, we can compute the behavior of 1D bosons in different cases where the results are still lacking. First, in the case of harmonically trapped continuous bosons, we provide a full characterization of a quantity called Tan's contact. By computing the universal scaling function of it, we identify the behavior of the contact in various regimes of degeneracy for 1D bosons. We show that the contact exhibits a maximum versus temperature and that it is a signature of the crossover to fermionization in the strongly-interacting regime. Secondly, we study the localization and fractal properties of 1D ideal gases in shallow quasiperiodic potentials. The quasiperiodic system provides an appealing intermediate between long-range ordered and genuine disordered systems with unusual critical properties. While the tight-binding Aubry-Andr'e (AA) model has been widely studied, the shallow lattice case behaves differently. We determine the critical localization properties of the system, the critical potential, mobility edges and critical exponents which are universal. Moreover, we calculate the fractal dimension of the energy spectrum and find it is non-universal but always smaller than unity, which shows the spectrum is nowhere dense. Finally, we move to the study of the interacting case. With the quantum Monte Carlo calculations, we compute the phase diagram of Lieb-Liniger bosons in shallow quasiperiodic potentials. A Bose glass, surrounded by superfluid and Mott phases, is found. At finite temperature, we show that the melting of the Mott lobes is characteristic of a fractal structure and find that the Bose glass is robust against thermal fluctuations up to temperatures accessible in experiments

Abstract (sommario):
[EN] The purpose of the Ph.D. Thesis "Dynamics of strongly continuous semigroups associated to certain differential equations'' is to analyse, from the point of view of functional analysis, the dynamics of solutions of linear evolution equations. These solutions can be represented by a strongly continuous semigroup on an infinite-dimensional Banach space. The aim of our research is to provide global conditions for chaos, in the sense of Devaney, and stability properties of strongly continuous semigroups which are solutions of linear evolution equations. This work is composed of three principal chapters. Chapter 0 is introductory and defines basic terminology and notation used, besides presenting the basic results that we will use throughout this thesis. Chapters 1 and 2 describe, in general way, a strongly continuous semigroup induced by a semiflow in Lebesgue and Sobolev spaces which is a solution of a linear first order partial differential equation. Moreover, some characterizations of the main dynamical properties, including hypercyclicity, mixing, weakly mixing, chaos and stability are given along these chapters. Chapter 3 describes the dynamical properties of a difference equation based on the so-called birth-and-death model and analyses the conditions previously proven for this model improving them by employing a different strategy. The goal of this thesis is to characterize dynamical properties of these kind of strongly continuous semigroups in a general way, whenever possible, and to extend these results to another spaces. Along this memory, these findings are compared with the previous ones given by many authors in recent years.

Song, Degong. "On the Spectrum of Neutron Transport Equations with Reflecting Boundary Conditions". Diss., Virginia Tech, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/26375.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This dissertation is devoted to investigating the time dependent neutron transport equations with reflecting boundary conditions. Two typical geometries --- slab geometry and spherical geometry --- are considered in the setting of L^p including L^1. Some aspects of the spectral properties of the transport operator A and the strongly continuous semigroup T(t) generated by A are studied. It is shown under fairly general assumptions that the accumulation points of { m Pas}(A):=sigma (A) cap { lambda :{ m Re}lambda > -lambda^{ast} }, if they exist, could only appear on the line { m Re}lambda =-lambda^{ast}, where lambda^{ast} is the essential infimum of the total collision frequency. The spectrum of T(t) outside the disk {lambda : |lambda| leq exp (-lambda^{ast} t)} consists of isolated eigenvalues of T(t) with finite algebraic multiplicity, and the accumulation points of sigma (T(t)) igcap{ lambda : |lambda| > exp (-lambda^{ast} t)}, if they exist, could only appear on the circle {lambda :|lambda| =exp (-lambda^{ast} t)}. Consequently, the asymptotic behavior of the time dependent solution is obtained.

Abstract (sommario):
The principal contribution of this dissertation is a theory of Strongly Orthotropic Continuum Mechanics that is derived entirely from an assertion of geometric strain indeterminacy. Implementable into the finite element method, it can resolve widespread kinematic misrepresentations and offer unique and purportedly exact strain-induced energies by removing the assumptions of strain tensor symmetry. This continuum theory births the proposal of a new class of physical tensors described as the Intrinsic Field Tensors capable of generalising the response of most classical mechanical metrics, a number of specialised formulations and the solutions shown to be kinematically intermediate. A series of numerical examples demonstrate Euclidean objectivity, material frame-indifference, patch test satisfaction, and agreement between the subsequent Material Principal Co-rotation and P??I??C decomposition methods that produce the intermediary stress/strain fields. The encompassing theory has wide applicability owing to its fundamental divergence from conventional mechanics, it offers non-trivial outcomes when applied to even very simple problems and its use of not the Eulerian, Lagrangian but the Intrinsic Frame generates previously unreported results in strongly orthotropic continua.

Abstract (sommario):
In the context of loadings criticality analysis, the thesis work have the following objectives : to take into account the underlying phenomena to ductile fracture : the volumetrie (plasticity and damage) and surfacic (fracture) dissipativ mechanisms. We also aim at regularizing the solution with regards to meshing, predicting the transition from a straigh crack propagation to a slant fracture mode observed for certain tests. The chosen method relies on the stron discontinuity method. One of the major challenges of this work is to extend its framework to the ductile fractur modeling framework, by accounting for plasticity and damage in the bulk. The first part of this work is dedicated to th establ'ishment of a model in small strain hypothesis, with a material model that takes into account coupied plasticity an damage in the QUik and a damageable model for the cohesive surfacic behavior. Both modes 1 and Il have been taken int) account in thnumerical examples. Results attesting the regularizing capabilities of the method are presented fo different tests. The second part of this work is dedicated to the formulation of a finite strain mode!, and results showin the good regularizing capabilities of the method are also shown. Both elements have been implemented in FEAP (Finit Element Analysis Program), an academie software developed at UC Berkeley by Taylor, and more recently in the finit element software Abaqus

Abstract (sommario):
The study of Computational Failure Mechanics has attracted increasing attention over the past years. Modelling the postcritical behaviour of structures is by no means trivial, due to high level of complexity that it can reach . From the continuum mechanics point of view, failure is tightly related to strain localization. When bands with modes of intense deformation are observed in a solid, it is said to undergo strain localization. It has been classified as a material instability due to its close relationship with constitutive models either equipped with strain softening or having non-associative flow rules.
From a phenomenological standpoint, strain localization can be regarded as an interface where a jump in the displacement field develops. These jumps in the displacement field are termed strong discontinuities. In this work, several techniques that contribute to the continuum modelling of strong discontinuities in two-dimensional solids are proposed.
To this end, a systematic review of the fundamentals of the study of failure in solids within the context of Classical Continuum Mechanics is made. First, the necessary conditions for the appearance of discontinuities in solids are established by using the socalled discontinuous bifurcation analysis. Then, the implications of adopting the strong discontinuity kinematics plus the use of continuum constitutive models are studied by means of the so-called strong discontinuity analysis. With these concepts on hand, the study of finite elements with embedded discontinuities is undertaken. A very general multi-field statement of the governing equations of the boundary value problem is used as the framework to formulate the different families of elements. The comparative analysis of all the formulations leads to the conclusion that the so-called non-symmetric element is the most efficient. However, the use of this element entails the necessity of a tracking algorithm. This kind of algorithms are also studied. A tracking algorithm based on a heat-conduction-like boundary value problem that gives all the possible discontinuity lines for a given time step in a loading process is proposed. This algorithm is specially suitable for managing multiple discontinuity interfaces. The problems of stability and uniqueness that can appear when simulating the evolution of discontinuity interfaces are analyzed and the addition of a regularizing damping term to the momentum balance equation was proposed. Finally, the proposed techniques were tested by means of some numerical examples.

Abstract (sommario):
In this his latest work, Gavan McCormack argues that Abe Shinzo’s efforts to re-engineer the Japanese state may fail, but his radicalism continues to shake the country and will have consequences not easy now to predict. The significance of this book will be widely recognized, particularly by those researching contemporary world politics, international relations and the history of modern Japan. McCormack here revisits and reassesses his previous formulations of Japan as construction state (doken kokka), client state (zokkoku), constitutional pacifist state, and colonial state (especially in its relationship to Okinawa). He adds a further chapter on what he calls the ‘rampant state’, that outlines the increasingly authoritarian or ikkyo (one strong) turn of the Abe government in the fifth year of its second term. And he critically addresses the Abe agenda for constitutional revision.

Abstract (sommario):
The focus of this chapter is on how our notions of shape in music emerge from experiences of sound-producing body motion such as hitting, stroking, bowing, shaking or blowing. Sound-producing body motion is seen as organized around postures at salient moments in the music, around so-called key-postures, and as making continuous trajectories between these key-postures. It is suggested that our experiences of both making and seeing such key-postures and continuous trajectories in sound-producing body motion link the sonic and visual elements in music, meaning that body motion strongly contributes to our notions of shape in music.

Abstract (sommario):
This article discusses musical-timbre perception. Musical timbre is a combination of continuous perceptual dimensions and discrete features to which listeners are differentially sensitive. The continuous dimensions often have quantifiable acoustic correlates. The timbre-space representation is a powerful psychological model that allows predictions to be made about timbre perception in situations beyond those used to derive the model in the first place. Timbre can play a role in larger-scale movements of tension and relaxation and thus contribute to the expression inherent in musical form. Under conditions of high blend among instruments composing a vertical sonority, timbral roughness is a major component of musical tension. However, it strongly depends on the way auditory grouping processes have parsed the incoming acoustic information into events and streams.

Abstract (sommario):
Since the publication of the first edition of Head Strong: How Psychology Is Revolutionizing War in 2014, developments in military psychology have been rapid and important—so much so that this revised edition is necessary to accurately capture the vital role that psychology continues to play in twenty-first-century military success. The ideas contained in the first edition influenced emerging doctrine in the Army’s Human Dimension and informed military leaders around the globe of ways that psychological science and practice may be leveraged to improve combat effectiveness. Many of the predictions made in the first edition have come true, and new and exciting products of military psychology now offer novel ways of impacting military outcomes. This revised edition of Head Strong updates the 13 chapters included in the first edition with breaking news in military psychology and adds new material to augment those chapters. Two entirely new chapters are included in this edition. The first focuses on human performance optimization. It captures rapid developments in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, and other disciplines that may help the military optimize soldier and unit performance. The second dives deeply into character and discusses how to measure it, how to develop it, and how character plays a vital role in the performance of individual soldiers and their units. Like the other topics in Head Strong, these two new chapters have significant applicability to nonmilitary organizations including schools, corporations, and sports teams.

Abstract (sommario):
We examine analytically and experimentally a new phenomenon of ‘continuous resonance scattering’ in an impulsively excited, two-mass oscillating system. This system consists of a grounded damped linear oscillator with a light, strongly nonlinear attachment. Previous numerical simulations revealed that for certain levels of initial excitation, the system engages in a special type of response that appears to track a solution branch formed by the so-called ‘impulsive orbits’ of this system. By this term we denote the periodic (under conditions of resonance) or quasi-periodic (under conditions of non-resonance) responses of the system when a single impulse is applied to the linear oscillator with the system being initially at rest. By varying the magnitude of the impulse we obtain a manifold of impulsive orbits in the frequency-energy plane. It appears that the considered damped system is capable of entering into a state of continuous resonance scattering, whereby it tracks the impulsive orbit manifold with decreasing energy. Through analytical treatment of the equations of motion, a direct relationship is established between the frequency of the nonlinear attachment and the amplitude of the linear oscillator response, and a prediction of the system response during continuous scattering resonance is provided. Experimental results confirm the analytical predictions.

Abstract (sommario):
The present work aims to study the effect of a nonlinear energy sink (NES) with relatively small mass on the dynamics of a coupled system under impulsion with free oscillations. The process of energy transfer is governed by structure of damped nonlinear normal modes of the system. In particular the energy pumping occurs if the nonlinear normal mode is quickly broken down with rather abrupt decrease of both amplitudes, i.e. a bifurcation (brutal change of frequency) is associated with the breakdown of the resonant regime of vibrations. The theoretical effects are experimentally verified with a mechanical experiment which confirms the above results by using a small building model. To identify those frequency migrations, a new wavelet-based methodology, namely quasi-continuous wavelet method, is used.

Abstract (sommario):
The focus of this paper is to study the behavior of systems with continuous particle size distributions over a gas-solid flow in a bubbling fluidized bed. A lognormal distribution with particle-size range between 800 micrometers and 900 micrometers was used to perform numerical simulations to investigate gas bubbles formation for a polydispersed system. Different drag models were used to predict the bubbles. Species segregation for a binary mixture and a monodispersed system were also studied. Discrete Element Method (DEM) simulations were performed using the source code MFIX (“Multiphase Flow with Interphase eXchanges”) [1] developed at NETL (“National Energy Technology Laboratory”). The bubble size of a single injected bubble depended strongly on gas-particle drag model used. The influence of the gas bubbles in the mixture and segregation was analyzed and discussed. The results were compared with experimental results from the literature and a good agreement were obtained.

Abstract (sommario):
The complex thermal-mechanical loading of power-generating plant components usually comprises of creep, high-cycle and low-cycle fatigue which are thermally induced by start-ups, load changes and shut-downs, producing instationary temperature gradients and hence creating strain as well as stress fields. In order to select the correct materials for these hostile environmental conditions, it is vitally important to understand the behaviour of mechanical properties of these materials. This paper reports the results of Low-cycle fatigue tests of P122 (HCM12A or 12Cr-1.8W-1.5Cu) high temperature boiler material, which is one of the latest developed materials for high temperature environments. The tests were conducted at temperatures ranging from 550°C to 700 °C at 50°C intervals with strain ranges of ±1.5 to ±3.0% at 0.5% intervals using a closed-loop hydraulic Instron material testing machine with a servo hydraulic controller. The results confirm that P122 is comparable to conventional high temperature steels. Moreover, the fracture mode assessments strongly revealed a ductile transgranular fracture mode.

Abstract (sommario):
The progression of hypothetical core disruptive accidents in metal fuel cores is strongly affected by exclusion of molten metal fuel from the core region due to molten fuel-coolant interaction (FCI). As a basic study of FCI in metal fuel fast reactors, the present paper focuses on the fragmentation and the characteristics of the debris produced during a series of experiments of a single molten copper droplet from 1g to 5g and continuous droplets with a total mass from 16g to 26g, which penetrated a sodium pool at instantaneous contact interface temperatures from 1005 °C far below the freezing point: 1084°C to 1342°C. The results show that the mass median diameters (Dm) of different mass copper droplets both a single droplet and continuous ones penetrating a sodium pool differ very little, nearly the same when the instantaneous contact interface temperatures (Ti) are above the freezing point, and also the droplets are fragmented finely with their increasing Tis; but when Tis are below the freezing point, the Dms of different mass copper droplets scatter a little widely. These results basically show the fragmentation of molten fuel, which is important to assure the termination of accidents, is promising in the sodium space in the upper and lower plenums.

Abstract (sommario):
COVID-19 had, and continues to have, a strong negative effect on incomes in Ireland due to widespread job losses as the measures put in place to slow the spread of the disease resulted in severe economic restrictions. Despite the existence of unemployment supports, additional income supports were introduced to protect incomes. As public health restrictions lift and the economy recovers, we face the withdrawal of such supports. We examine these supports and the role they played in supporting incomes. By profiling those who benefitted most from the new schemes, we highlight the groups most at risk of significant income losses as they wind down. We consider what gaps in the social welfare system necessitated the introduction of such schemes in the first place, along with potential future policy changes to ensure that the social welfare system can provide adequate income protection and financial incentives to work as we emerge from the COVID-19 crisis.

Ama Pokuaa, Fenny, Aba Obrumah Crentsil, Christian Kwaku Osei e Felix Ankomah Asante. Fiscal and Public Health Impact of a Change in Tobacco Excise Taxes in Ghana. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), novembre 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ictd.2020.003.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This working paper predicts the fiscal and public health outcomes from a change in the excise tax structure for cigarettes in Ghana. More than 5,000 people are killed by diseases caused by tobacco every year in Ghana (Tobacco Atlas 2018). Currently the country has a unitary tax administration approach, with a uniform ad valorem tax structure on all excisable products, including tobacco. However, the ECOWAS directive on tobacco control, in line with the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO 2003), recommends a simple tax structure – using a mixed excise system with a minimum specific tax floor to overcome the limitations of an ad valorem system on tobacco products, especially cigarettes. The study therefore simulates mixed tax policy interventions, and assesses their effect on government revenue and public health relative to the current ad valorem tax system. Primary data collection of tobacco prices in three geographical zones of the country was conducted in February 2020, across both rural and urban localities. This was supported with secondary data from national and international databases. Based on the assumption that Ghana adopts a mixed tax structure, the simulation shows that, if the government imposes a specific excise tax of GH₵4.00 (US$0.80) per pack in addition to the current ad valorem rate of 175 per cent of the CIF value, the average retail price of a cigarette pack would increase by 128 per cent, cigarette consumption decrease by 27 per cent, tobacco excise tax revenue increase by 627 per cent, and overall tobacco-related government tax revenue increase by 201 per cent.1 Additionally, there would be significant declines in smoking prevalence (3.3%), smoking intensity (1,448 cigarettes per year), and 3,526 premature smoking-related deaths would be avoided. The paper advocates for a strong tax administration and technical capacity, with continuous commitment by the government to adjust the tax rate in line with the rate of inflation and per capita income growth.

Financial Stability Report - First Semester of 2020. Banco de la República de Colombia, marzo 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.32468/rept-estab-fin.1sem.eng-2020.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In the face of the multiple shocks currently experienced by the domestic economy (resulting from the drop in oil prices and the appearance of a global pandemic), the Colombian financial system is in a position of sound solvency and adequate liquidity. At the same time, credit quality has been recovering and the exposure of credit institutions to firms with currency mismatches has declined relative to previous episodes of sudden drops in oil prices. These trends are reflected in the recent fading of red and blue tonalities in the performance and credit risk segments of the risk heatmaps in Graphs A and B.1 Naturally, the sudden, unanticipated change in macroeconomic conditions has caused the appearance of vulnerabilities for short-term financial stability. These vulnerabilities require close and continuous monitoring on the part of economic authorities. The main vulnerability is the response of credit and credit risk to a potential, temporarily extreme macroeconomic situation in the context of: (i) recently increased exposure of some banks to household sector, and (ii) reductions in net interest income that have led to a decline in the profitability of the banking business in the recent past. Furthermore, as a consequence of greater uncertainty and risk aversion, occasional problems may arise in the distribution of liquidity between agents and financial markets. With regards to local markets, spikes have been registered in the volatility of public and private fixed income securities in recent weeks that are consistent with the behavior of the international markets and have had a significant impact on the liquidity of those instruments (red portions in the most recent past of some market risk items on the map in Graph A). In order to adopt a forward-looking approach to those vulnerabilities, this Report presents a stress test that evaluates the resilience of credit institutions in the event of a hypothetical scenario thatseeks to simulate an extreme version of current macroeconomic conditions. The scenario assumes a hypothetical negative growth that is temporarily strong but recovers going into the middle of the coming year and has extreme effects on credit quality. The results suggest that credit institutions have the ability to withstand a significant deterioration in economic conditions in the short term. Even though there could be a strong impact on credit, liquidity, and profitability under the scenario being considered, aggregate capital ratios would probably remain at above their regulatory limits over the horizon of a year. In this context, the recent measures taken by both Banco de la República and the Office of the Financial Superintendent of Colombia that are intended to help preserve the financial stability of the Colombian economy become highly relevant. In compliance with its constitutional objectives and in coordination with the financial system’s security network, Banco de la República will continue to closely monitor the outlook for financial stability at this juncture and will make the decisions that are necessary to ensure the proper functioning of the economy, facilitate the flow of sufficient credit and liquidity resources, and further the smooth functioning of the payment system.
