Abstract (sommario):

Ziziphus jujuba extracts possess a broad spectrum of biological activities, such as antioxidant and anticancer activities in melanoma cancers. Nevertheless, the compounds contain high antioxidant capacities and anticancer activities in melanoma cells, shown to be effective in hyperpigmentation disorders, but whether flavonoid glycosides from Z. jujuba regulate anti-melanogenesis remains unclear. In this study, we evaluated the anti-melanogenic activity of five flavonoid glycosides from Z. jujuba var. inermis (Bunge) Rehder seeds, including jujuboside A (JUA), jujuboside B (JUB), epiceanothic acid (EPA), betulin (BTL), and 6’’’-feruloylspinosin (FRS), in B16F10 melanoma cells and zebrafish larvae. According to our results, JUB, EPA, and FRS potently inhibited α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH)-induced melanogenesis and prevented hyperpigmentation in zebrafish larvae. In particular, under α-MSH-stimulated conditions, FRS most significantly inhibited α-MSH-induced intracellular and extracellular melanin content in B16F10 melanoma cells. Additionally, JUB, EPS, and FRS remarkably downregulated melanogenesis in α-MSH-treated zebrafish larvae, with no significant change in heart rate. Neither JUA nor BTA were effective in downregulating melanogenesis in B16F10 melanoma cells and zebrafish larvae. Furthermore, JUB, EPA, and FRS directly inhibited in vitro mushroom tyrosinase enzyme activity. JUB, EPA, and FRS also downregulated cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels and the phosphorylation of cAMP-response element-binding protein (CREB), and subsequent microphthalmia transcription factor (MITF) and tyrosinase expression. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that JUB, EPA, and FRS isolated from Z. jujuba var. inermis (Bunge) Rehder seeds exhibit potent anti-melanogenic properties by inhibition of the cAMP-CERB-MITF axis and consequent tyrosinase activity.

Abstract Yellowjackets are notable pests of humans due to their opportunistic foraging behaviors, painful stings, and potential for causing dangerous allergic reactions. Baited traps provide a useful supplement for controlling yellowjackets compared with nest treatments, which are often dangerous, time consuming, costly, and do little to prevent nuisance interactions between humans and foragers. This study compares three homemade yellowjacket traps and three commercially available traps in Lake County, California, to determine efficacy and cost benefit. Traps were set at five sites and randomly rotated between six plots per site and baits were changed every 2 wk per commercial manufacturer recommendations. Cost benefit was determined using material and bait cost, as well as bait change frequency and overall trap efficacy. Yellowjacket count data were analyzed using a hurdle model. Traps compared included the Rescue! Yellowjacket trap, the Rescue! Wasp, Hornet, and Yellowjacket trap, the Victor Yellowjacket trap, a homemade bottle trap, jar trap, and homemade jug trap. The total number of yellowjackets collected was 33,321. The trap that collected the highest number of yellowjackets was the Rescue! Yellowjacket trap (n = 19,257) and the trap that collected the fewest yellowjackets was the jar trap (n = 65). The Rescue! Yellowjacket trap was the most cost-effective, calculated at approximately $0.40/100 yellowjackets collected. The jar trap was the least cost-effective, calculated at approximately $31.10/100 yellowjackets collected. The Rescue! Yellowjacket trap was overall the most effective and cost-effective trap evaluated for Lake County, California.

The dart thrower’s motion is a wrist rotation along an oblique plane from radial extension to ulnar flexion. We report an in-vivo study to confirm the use of the dart thrower’s motion during activities of daily living. Global wrist motion in ten volunteers was recorded using a three-dimensional optoelectronic motion capture system, in which digital infra-red cameras track the movement of retro-reflective marker clusters. Global wrist motion has been approximated to the dart thrower’s motion when hammering a nail, throwing a ball, drinking from a glass, pouring from a jug and twisting the lid of a jar, but not when combing hair or manipulating buttons. The dart thrower’s motion is the plane of global wrist motion used during most activities of daily living. Arthrodesis of the radiocarpal joint instead of the midcarpal joint will allow better wrist function during most activities of daily living by preserving the dart thrower’s motion.

The efficacy and tolerability of the imidazopyridine hypnotic, zolpidem, were investigated in 119 elderly psychiatric inpatients complaining of insomnia in a double-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled trial. After a 7-day placebo washout period, patients were randomized to receive 10 or 20 mg/day zolpidem, or placebo for 21 days; thereafter, all patients received placebo for 7 days. Sleep was assessed by patient observation on days 0, 1, 7, 14, 21, 22 and 28. Compared with placebo, 20 mg/day zolpidem significantly improved total duration of sleep between day 0 and day 21, and this was maintained at day 28. After 10 or 20 mg/day zolpidem, there was also a trend towards improvement in all other sleep parameters, which remained above baseline at day 28. Zolpidem was well tolerated with no withdrawal symptoms during the second 7-day placebo treatment period. Daytime drowsiness was reported in three patients receiving 20 mg/day zolpidem and in one receiving 10 mg/day zolpidem, but there was no significant increase in daytime drowsiness between days 0 and 21. Ataxia occurred in two, one and one patient, respectively, treated with 20 mg/day zolpidem, 10 mg/day zolpidem and placebo. The incidences of other adverse events or effects on clinical and laboratory parameters were minimal and similar in all three treatment groups. It is concluded that, in elderly psychiatric patients, 10 mg/day zolpidem can be used to treat insomnia and can be safely added to concomitant psychotropic treatment without inducing daytime drowsiness. L'efficacité et la tolérabilité du zolpidem, hypnotique de la classe des imidazopyridines ont été étudiées chez 119 patients âgés hospitalisés souffrant de troubles psychiatriques et se plaignant d'insomnie dans une étude en double aveugle à groupes parallèles, contrôlée par placebo. Après une période de washout par placebo de 7 jours, les patients ont été randomisés de manière à recevoir d'abord 10 ou 20 mg par jour de zolpidem ou du placebo pendant 21 jours; puis tous les patients recevèrent du placebo pendant 7 jours. Le sommeil a pu être évalué par l'observation des patients aux jours 0, 1, 7,14, 21, 22 et 28. Comparé au placebo, le zolpidem à la dose de 20 mg par jour a significativement augmenté la durée totale du sommeil entre le 1er et le 21ème jour, et cet effet était toujours présent au 28ème jour. Après 10 ou 20 mg par jour de zolpidem, on a également relevé une tendance à l'amélioration de tous les autres paramètres du sommeil, qui étaient toujours au-dessus de leurs valeurs de base au 28ème jour. Le zolpidem a été bien toléré et on n'a pas observé de syndrome de manque sevrage lors de la seconde période de traitement de 7 jours par placebo. Une somnolence diurne a été observée chez trois patients recevant 20 mg par jour de zolpidem, et chez un patient recevant 10 mg par jour, mais il n'y pas eu d'augmentation significante de la somnolence diurne entre jour 0 et jour 28. Une ataxie est apparue chez duex patients traité par 20 mg par jour de zolpidem, un patient traiteá par 10 mg par jour de zolpidem, et un patient traité par placebo. Les incidences des autres effets secondaires ou l'action sur les paramètres cliniques ou biologiques s'est révélée minime et similaire pour les trois groupes de patients. L'étude a conclu que, chez les patients âgés souffrant de troubles psychiatriques, un traitement par 10 mg par jour de zolpidem pouvait être utilisé pour traiter l'insomnie et peut être adjoint en toute sécurité à un traitement psychotrope concomitant sans induire de somnolence diurne.

Abstract Spatial metaphors of affect display remarkable consistencies across languages in mapping sensorimotor experiences onto emotional states, reflecting a great degree of similarity in how our bodies register affect. At the same time, however, affect is complex and there is more than a single possible mapping from vertical spatial concepts to affective states. Here we consider a previously unreported case of spatial metaphors mapping down onto desirable, and up undesirable emotional experiences in Mlabri, an Austroasiatic language of Thailand and Laos, making a novel contribution to the study of metaphor and Cognitive Linguistics. Using first-hand corpus and elicitation data, we examine the metaphorical expressions: klol jur ‘heart going down’ and klol khɯn ‘heart going up’/klol kɔbɔ jur ‘heart not going down’. Though reflecting a metaphorical mapping opposite to the commonly reported happy is up metaphor, which is said to link to universal bodily correlates of emotion, the Mlabri metaphors are far from idiosyncratic. Rather, they are grounded in the bodily experience of positive low-arousal states, and in that reflect an emic view of ideal affect centered on contentment and tranquility. This underscores the complexity of bodily experience of affect, demonstrating that cultures draw on the available sensorimotor correlates of emotion in distinct ways.

Abstract (sommario):

This article offers the first-ever comprehensive philological and historical commentary on possible historical allusions to the Idumeans in the following Pseudepigrapha: Pseudo-Aristeas, Judith, Jubilees, the Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs, the Apocalypse of Enoch, 1 Esdras, and 4 Ezra. This study argues that references to the Idumeans in the Pseudepigrapha (mostly hidden under the figure of Esau or sons of Esau) are of a very general character and as such are of little use to modern historians. Most passages are only literary expressions of the Judeans’ long-standing tradition of hostility towards the Edomites/Idumeans. Only in a few cases may we speak about general echoes of particular historical events. In 1 Esd. 4.50 and Jub. 37.1–38.14, an advanced Idumean settlement is reflected west of Arabah and south of Judea. Based on the archaeology, this settlement may have started as early as in the eighth century BCE and over time led to the emergence of a new province called Idumea in the Hellenistic period. The second-century BCE Maccabean–Idumean conflict is also echoed in several Pseudepigrapha. In general, the book of Judith reflects the strategic role of mountain passes and the use of lightly armed troops in Maccabean times. In turn, Jub. 37.1–38.14 and the T. Jud. 9.1–4 were written from a specific historical angle created by the Hasmonean conquest of Idumea, but their use of topography and chronology is so simplified that they cannot be employed by modern historians for the reconstruction of the course of the Hasmonean–Idumean conflict. Instead, both books express the ideology of territorial rights, disguised as patriarchal history. Finally, 1 Esd. 5.29 and 8.66 appear to express the ambivalent situation of the Idumeans after conversion: though they became part of the Judean community, the notion of their ethnic distinctiveness and inferiority survived.

It is our great pleasure to present the Fourth JDR Award to Professor Nobuo Shuto for his outstanding contributions to the Journal of Disaster Research (JDR) as the Honorary Editor. Professor Shuto, Professor Emeritus of Tohoku University, is a pioneer of the theoretical study of tsunamis. He has also made a large contribution to the development of numerical simulations, visualization through computer graphics, and other critical techniques for the study and control of tsunami disasters. The development of tsunami disaster reduction and management that we have today is thanks in large part to his achievements. On behalf of the JDR editorial board, I wish to thank Professor Nobuo Shuto for his efforts and to congratulate him as the winner of the Fourth JDR Award.

This paper provides the foundation for a complete bryophyte history and moss flora of the state and reports new records of three species, Drepanocladus crassicostatus Janssens, Orthotrichum hallii Sull. & Lesq. in Sull., and Syntrichia papillosa (Wilson) Jur., and one variety, Syntrichia laevipila Brid. var. meridionalis (Schimp.) Over 10 years pass after experimental discovery Josephson plasma resonance (JPR) in high-Tc superconductors. JPR spectroscopy became the powerful tool to study vortex phase diagram and interlayer electrodynamics in Josephson coupled layered superconductors like certain of high-Tc cuprates and molecular superconductors. We describe main principles of the JPR spectroscopy for measurement longitudinal plasma oscillations at the fundamental frequency ωp. That frequency and linewidth of resonance is directly related to the interlayer phase coherence. In this paper we report about developments and achievments in spectroscopy of JPR. The study of the vortex state of Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ and c-axis electrodynamics of Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8+δ and Bi 2 Sr 2 CuO 6+δ w in zero magnetic field by JPR.

ABSTRACT Vaccinia virus, a member of the poxvirus family, contains a conserved J1R open reading frame that encodes a late protein of 17.8 kDa. The 18-kDa J1R protein is associated mainly with the membrane fraction of intracellular mature virus particles. This study examines the biological function of J1R protein in the vaccinia virus life cycle. A recombinant vaccinia virus was constructed to conditionally express J1R protein in an isopropyl-β-d-galactopyranoside (IPTG)-inducible manner. When J1R is not expressed during vaccinia virus infection, the virus titer is reduced approximately 100-fold. In contrast, J1R protein is not required for viral gene expression, as indicated by protein pulse-labeling. J1R protein is also not required for DNA processing, as the resolution of the concatemer junctions of replicated viral DNA was detected without IPTG. A deficiency of J1R protein caused a severe delay in the processing of p4a and p4b into mature core proteins 4a and 4b, indicating that J1R protein participates in virion morphogenesis. Infected cells grown in the absence of IPTG contained very few intracellular mature virions in the cytoplasm, and enlarged viroplasm structures accumulated with viral crescents attached at the periphery. Abundant intermediate membrane structures of abnormal shapes were observed, and many immature virions were either empty or partially filled, indicating that J1R protein is important for DNA packaging into immature virions. J1R protein also coimmunoprecipited with A45R protein in infected cells. In summary, these results indicate that vaccinia virus J1R is a membrane protein that is required for virus growth and plaque formation. J1R protein interacts with A45R protein and performs an important role during immature virion formation in cultured cells.

The purpose of this study was to determine which incentives are most effective in motivating medical students to practice in rural areas of South Carolina, which can be informative for the medical practitioner rural recruitment process. Medical students attending the University of South Carolina School of Medicine located in Columbia, South Carolina were surveyed about demographic information, motivations for rural practice, and considerations for choosing a practice location (n=109). Chi-square tests and bivariate analyses were used to test for significant differences. A significant relationship was found between previous residence in a rural area and personal motivation to practice in a rural area (p<0.001). It was also found that 86.2% of students who had previously lived, worked, or served in rural areas had a personal motivation to practice medicine in a rural area, confirming previous research. Loan forgiveness options were the most appealing personal incentive for the students in this study, closely followed by guaranteed minimum incomes and tax incentives; financial incentives were more preferred than non-financial incentives like reduced on-call work and accelerated residencies. The results of this study can be utilized to craft future state-supported incentive programs or to tailor current programs to more effectively recruit students to rural practice. Purpose: This study aim was to investigate the effect product strategy on the growth of jua kali Enterprise in North Imenti Sub County, Meru County. The study hypothesized that there is no significant relationship between product and growth of jua kali enterprises.Methodology: The study adopted a descriptive research design. The population comprised of one hundred and twenty eight (128) owner of jua kali enterprises operating within North Imenti Sub County, Meru County and registered by Micro and Small Enterprises Authority Kenya (MSEA-K). A stratified random sampling technique was used to select a sample of ninety seven (97) jua kali enterprises from the total population. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire after which mean and standard deviation were computed while Pearson Correlation, and linear regression done accordingly. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 22 was used as a statistical tool.Results: The results indicated that there is growth in jua kali sector which is contributed by product strategy. The study established that product strategy affects growth of jua kali enterprises hence rejecting the hypothesis. ABSTRACT Vaccinia virus J1R protein is required for virion morphogenesis (W. L. Chiu and W. Chang, J. Virol. 76:9575-9587, 2002). In this work, we further characterized the J1R protein of wild-type vaccinia virus and compared it with the protein encoded by the temperature-sensitive mutant virus Cts45. The mutant Cts45 was found to contain a Pro-to-Ser substitution at residue 132 of the J1R open reading frame, which is responsible for a loss-of-function phenotype. The half-life of the J1R-P132S mutant protein was comparable at both 31 and 39°C, indicating that the P132S mutation did not affect the stability of the J1R protein. We also showed that the J1R protein interacts with itself in the virus-infected cells. The N-terminal region of the J1R protein, amino acids (aa) 1 to 77, interacted with the C-terminal region, aa 84 to 153, and the P132 mutation did not abolish this interaction, as determined by two-hybrid analysis. Furthermore, we demonstrated that J1R protein is part of a viral complex containing the A30L, G7L, and F10L proteins in virus-infected cells. In immunofluorescence analyses, wild-type J1R protein colocalized with the A30L, G7L, and F10L proteins in virus-infected cells but the loss-of-function P132 mutant did not. Furthermore, without a functional J1R protein, rapid degradation of A30L and the 15-kDa forms of the G7L and F10L proteins was observed in cells infected with Cts45 at 39°C. This study thus demonstrated the importance of the J1R protein in the formation of a viral assembly complex required for morphogenesis.

This study aimed to compare a variant of the check-all-that-apply (CATA) method, CATA with just-about-right (JAR) scales (CATA-JAR), with the CATA and rate-all-that-apply (RATA) methods for evaluating 12 Korean traditional rice wines (yakju). All consumers (n = 312) assessed each sample on a 9-point hedonic scale and were asked to fill out the CATA, RATA, or CATA-JAR questionnaire using a 5-point JAR scale. The frequency and percentage of terms with significant differences among CATA-JAR samples were significantly higher than those for the CATA method. The regression vector (RV) between the sample and term configurations of the three methods were all over 0.84, indicating that all methods were similar in terms of product and term usage. Regarding the stability of the sample configurations, CATA-JAR could derive a stable value with the lowest number of consumers (n = 25). For the CATA-JAR method, significant penalties for each attribute and product were successfully calculated using the t-test and bootstrapping technique, to identify any attribute detrimental to liking for each product. Overall, considering its better performance in discriminating products and stability, the CATA-JAR method may be used when comparing samples with subtle differences in attributes.

Due to a serious deficit during the 1970s, Japanese government meant to transform Japan National Railway (JNR) in profit organizations. After a lengthy political battle over it, the bill of the privatization of JNR was enacted in 1986 and finally, JR Kyusyu (JRK) was born in 1987. This case shows intriguing change processes, that is, enthusiastic small attempts for change proliferated in the early stage. Throughout the change processes, some who survived spread across the different parts of the organization like a pollination process. Learning back and forth across JRK went on running; consequently, swift change movement started to transform their old organizational culture to new one. It is a teaching case.

Abstract Bats rely heavily on echolocation for orientation and prey detection, hence acoustic signals that interfere with echo reception are problematic. When flying in the presence of other bats, some species adjust their echolocation to avoid frequency overlap with the calls of nearby conspecifics, known as a jamming avoidance response (JAR). One aspect of JAR that has not been thoroughly examined is how the spectral structure of the jamming signal impacts the jamming response. Our objective was to examine how the structural characteristics of an echolocation broadcast impact JAR in free-flying Brazilian free-tailed bats, Tadarida brasiliensis . We created 4 echolocation playbacks that differed only in call shape and frequency modulation. We examined the response of bats when flying in the presence of an unchanging broadcast (static stimulus) and when the playback signal was abruptly switched as the bat approached the speaker (dynamic stimulus). Results revealed that the bandwidth of the interfering signal impacted the strength of the observed JAR, while the presence and/or length of a terminal quasi-constant frequency section in the interfering signal did not. Our results agree with laboratory studies documenting JAR in the presence of white noise, as well as field studies demonstrating extensive variability in the echolocation calls of Brazilian free-tailed bats. We relate these results to previous findings on JAR, including a recent study documenting no JAR in a bat species and suggest further experiments to tease apart the physiological limitations of JAR. Overall, this study provides additional insight into the signal processing capabilities of bats and improves our understanding of how bats are able to orient using sound in a noisy world.

Abstract A novel post-treatment system, jet loop reactor (JLR), was proposed for anaerobic bioreactor effluent polishing purposes. The performance of the JLR, with respect to residual organics, total Kjeldahl nitrogen (TKN) and ammonia-nitrogen removal at different hydraulic retention times (HRTs), was the main focus of this study. The JLR, on average, was capable of removing approximately 99% of ammonia-nitrogen and 95% of TKN at HRTs of 8 and 5 h, respectively. The integrated system had an average removal of more than 85% of total BOD and COD and more than 95% of filtered BOD and COD. However, the JLR did not have a consistent performance due to dynamic MLSS concentration (and SRT). Overall the results indicate that the JLR can be considered as a feasible alternative for post-treatment of anaerobic bioreactor effluent.

This study aims to analyze and understand the legal protection towards the mark owner from the share-in jar cosmetic trade and the legal consequences for business actors who do share-in jar cosmetic trade. The type of legal research used in this study is a normative juridical legal research method. The data collection in this study was conducted through a literature study from the laws and regulations, journals, research results, and books. The data analysis used in this research is the descriptive analysis method. The results of the study show that the legal protection towards the mark owner from the share-in jar cosmetic trade can be carried out through preventive and repressive legal protection efforts. Legal protection efforts are preventively carried out by registering the mark to get legal protection as a legal mark owner. Repressive legal protection efforts for trademarks can be done by litigation dispute resolution and non-litigation dispute resolution. The legal consequences for business actors who do share-in jar cosmetic trade are compensate for damages and/or ceasing all acts related to mark use. Therefore, it is recommended to the mark owner to provide cosmetics with trial or sample sizes. In this case, so that consumers try first about their compatibility with these cosmetics. On the other hand, business actors doing share-in cosmetic jar trade must make a license agreement with the mark owner. Furthermore, the government needs to include criteria for violations of right on mark in laws and regulations. This is purpose to increase legal protection towards the mark owner from the share-in jar cosmetic trade in the future.

Purpose: The number of open access (OA) journals is rapidly increasing, and it is very important for librarians to understand the influence of OA journals on the research community. This study investigated the influence of the OA journals listed in Journal Citation Reports (JCR) based on various indicators.Methods: The data for this study were prepared by combining the JCR 2014 to 2019 journal list with the number of hybrid OA articles obtained by searching the Web of Science. Each journal’s JCR indicators and article processing charge were added. The influence of OA journals was compared according to OA type, whether they were published by large publishers, and whether they were top gold OA journals.Results: Gold OA journals remained weaker in terms of JCR indicators than hybrid journals. However, the top 20 gold OA journals, accounting for 27.0% of all OA articles in JCR 2014 to 2019, were superior in all JCR indicators. The top three OA publishers (MDPI, BioMed Central, and Public Library of Science) showed potential for development despite concerns regarding poor journals. The top three subscription publishers were very active in OA publishing, but their actual share of hybrid OA articles (Elsevier, 5.1%; Springer, 10.1%; and Wiley, 12.4% in JCR 2019) was still insufficient.Conclusion: Some gold OA journals showed high competitiveness and even the possibility for development beyond traditional journals. The transition of subscription journals to hybrid journals was found to be at the early stage. In light of these findings, librarians should continue monitoring the influence of OA journals.

It is our great pleasures to present the sixth JDR Award to Prof. Masato Iguchi. Prof. Iguchi, as the top guest editor, published two JDR special issues entitled “Integrated Study on Mitigation of Multimodal disasters caused by Ejection of Volcanic Products.” These special issues, vol.11, no.1 in 2016 and vol.14, no.1 in 2019, were results of a project (2013–2018) of the Science and Technology Research Partnership for Sustainable Development (SATREPS). The second special issue set a record for the highest annual download. In addition, he was the first author or co-author of 11 papers published by JDR in 2019. Professor Iguchi, as one of most recognized volcanologists in the world, has been leading observation research of active volcanoes as the Director of the Sakurajima Volcano Research Center of Kyoto University’s Disaster Prevention Research Institute. He has promoted geophysical research on volcanic activity not only in Japan but also in Indonesia, evaluating volcanic activity by incorporating the results of material science and demonstrating the effectiveness of long-term, multi-item observations in those processes. He has made a significant contribution to the promotion of Indonesian volcano research, taking over the strong will of former Kyoto University professors, and his contributions have culminated in the aforementioned two special issues. On behalf of the JDR editorial board, I wish to thank Prof. Iguchi for his efforts and to congratulate him as the winner of the sixth JDR Award.

The authors study the nature of articles published in the Journal of Marketing Research ( JMR) during the seven-year period 2013–2019. Consistent with the broad positioning of JMR, they find substantial diversity in domains, topics, methods, and sources of data among the published articles. They observe the emergence of new substantive topics, such as social media, social networks, and prosocial behavior, which reinforce the continued relevance of JMR. Notably, they observe increasing convergence across articles in the behavioral, quantitative, and strategy domains, reflecting more shared substantive topics of interest and common use of methods and sources of data. This trend bodes well for JMR, given its historical position as a diverse journal in the field.

Due to high demand of pure water, in densely populated Dhaka city, “Jar” water business by private suppliers has hiked up in recent years. And currently negative reports on the purity of these jar water had been evident in social and print media. Therefore, checking microbial contamination in these jar water used in various road side tea stalls known as “Tongs”, was the aim of this study. In this study, a total of 55 jar water samples were collected from 30 tea stalls. Membrane filter was used to extract the bacteria, which were later grown on m-FC agar (for total coliform) and m-FC agar with Rosolic acid (for fecal coliform). A total of 190 bacterial colonies was isolated and from them 19 were E.aerogenes, 30 were Escherichia Coli, 3 were Klebsiella, 28 were Salmonella and 11 were Shigella. The presence of these five bacteria are the clear evidence of contamination in the supplied jar water at road-side tea stalls of Dhaka; indicating robust quality check for water purity is required by the supplier. Awareness amongst the customers and stall owners should be made for the safety of the stake holders from water-borne diseases.

Abstract Long column settling and jar tests were undertaken as part of a treatability study of combined sewage at the Lou Romano Water Reclamation Plant (LRWRP) in Windsor, Ontario. Different types of cationic polymers were examined in jar tests, and the appropriate dosage and its relationship with the TSS removal were determined for the polymer coagulation process. Settling column tests were used to develop settling rate distribution curves under both chemically aided and unaided conditions, and to examine the performance of polymer coagulation in improving the settleability of wet-weather sewage during CSO events. The results of the long column settling tests for settling rate distributions show that the characteristics of the wet-weather sewage at the LRWRP during CSO events were similar to those of samples collected at actual overflow sites along the Windsor Riverfront. Settling rate distributions demonstrated that polymer addition to the wet-weather sewage significantly improved the settling characteristics.

This study compared the cost, speed, convenience, and sensitivity of five anaerobic systems. Fung's double-tube (FDT) method, the minitube method (MT), the sandwiched microtiter plate (SMP) method, and the Mitsubishi AnaeroPack System were compared with the Brewer anaerobic jar for total anaerobic bacterial counts in foods. Incubation was at 37°C for 4, 8, 12, and 24 h. The results indicated that FDT, MT, SMP, and the Mitsubishi AnaeroPack System were as sensitive as the Brewer anaerobic jar for the detection and enumeration of Clostridium perfringens from food products. The FDT, MT, and SMP methods recovered higher numbers of C. perfringens compared to the Brewer anaerobic jar (P < 0.05) after 12 and 24 h incubation. The Brewer anaerobic jar was the most expensive method.

Marriage is generally carried out by adults or already in ideal conditions for marriage, but until now there is still the practice of early marriage that occurs in Jua-Jua Village, Kayuagung District. This study aims to look at the analysis of early marriage in the economic resilience of families in Jua-Jua Village, Kayu Agung District by using a quantitative method approach, data collection techniques using questionnaires and interviews. Respondents in this study were 32 women who married early and one parent whose child married early was carried out by interview. The data analysis technique used is to find the percentage of the respondent's achievement level (TCR). The results showed that the TCR calculation on the indicator of family residence with a value of 80.86 is categorized as good. On the family income indicator with the TCR calculation, the value of 56.72 is categorized as poor, the indicator for children's educational needs with a value of 48.04 is categorized as not good and the indicator for family financial security with a TCR calculation value of 48.63 is categorized as not good. Through the calculation of the respondent's level of achievement, the average value of family economic resilience in early married couples is 58.56. This figure illustrates that the economic resilience of families in early married couples in Jua-Jua Village, Kayu Agung District is not good. Keywords: Early marriage, family economic resilience.

Standard operating procedure for pharmaceutical preparation of Devdarvadyarishta has been developed in the present research work. A pilot scale study having 3 batches was carried out initially to find out the best possible fermenting vessel among glass jar, porcelain jar and stainless steel vessel and also to investigate for any possible hurdle related with fermentation process as honey and not jaggery is used as sweetening agent in this formulation. Three samples of Devdarvadyarishta as per conventional method were prepared in accordance with Bhaishjya Ratnavali and process for standard of Devdarvadyarishta was set in as a Quality specification for the same. Porcelain jar was found to be the best as per the results of pilot study as evident by alcohol content of 5.73%, 6.25% and 6.10% respectively in glass jar, porcelain jar and stainless steel vessel, the reaction being completed in between 38-47 days. Approximate duration of Kwatha formation in all the batches was 9 hours with peak temperature during boiling being maintained at 920C. In all the three batches, fermentation started on 7th day, 7th day and 9th day, total duration of fermentation was 72 days, 70 days and 75 days, with % loss of 15.78%, 17.76% and 19.07% respectively. Mean % loss observed during preparation was 17.53%.

Sensory systems encode environmental information that is necessary for adaptive behavioural choices, and thus greatly influence the evolution of animal behaviour and the underlying neural circuits. Here, we evaluate how the quality of sensory information impacts the jamming avoidance response (JAR) in weakly electric fish. To sense their environment, these fish generate an oscillating electric field: the electric organ discharge (EOD). Nearby fish with similar EOD frequencies perform the JAR to increase the difference between their EOD frequencies, i.e. their difference frequency (DF). The fish determines the sign of the DF: when it has a lower frequency (DF > 0), EOD frequency is decreased and vice versa . We study the sensory basis of the JAR in two species: Apteronotus leptorhynchus have a high frequency ( ca 1000 Hz), spatio-temporally heterogeneous electric field, whereas Eigenmannia sp. have a low frequency ( ca 300 Hz), spatially uniform field. We show that the increased complexity of the Apteronotus field decreases the reliability of sensory cues used to determine the DF. Interestingly, Apteronotus responds to all JAR stimuli by increasing EOD frequency, having lost the neural pathway that produces JAR-related decreases in EOD frequency. Our results suggest that electric field complexity may have influenced the evolution of the JAR by degrading the related sensory information.

Jujuboside A is a kind of the saponins isolated from the seeds ofZiziphus jujuba, which possesses multiple biological effects, such as antianxiety, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory effects; however, its mediatory effect on isoproterenol-stimulated cardiomyocytes has not been investigated yet. In this study, we tried to detect the protective effect and potential mechanism of JUA on ISO-induced cardiomyocytes injury. H9C2 cells were treated with ISO to induce cell damage. Cells were pretreated with JUA to investigate the effects on the cell viability, morphological changes, light chain 3 conversion, and the activation of PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway. Results showed that ISO significantly inhibited the cell viability in a time- and dose-dependent manner. JUA pretreatment could reverse the reduction of cell viability and better the injury of H9C2 cells induced by ISO. Western blot analysis showed that JUA could accelerate the phosphorylation of PI3K, Akt, and mTOR. Results also indicated that JUA could significantly decrease the ratio of microtubule-associated protein LC3-II/I in H9C2 cells. Taken together, our research showed that JUA could notably reduce the damage cause by ISO via promoting the phosphorylation of PI3K, Akt, and mTOR and inhibiting LC3 conversion, which may be a potential choice for the treatment of heart diseases.

Abstract (sommario):

Al-Quran is the basic reason someone should understand the rules of Arabic. One of the basic rules is knowing the jar type which we generally often encounter in Arabic, but we do not understand that this letter has its own duties and functions. In this study, samples of Jar letters were used as many as 7 jar letter patterns which are generally often encountered in the Al-Quran. The purpose of this research is to build a system that can recognize Jar letters using the Pierce Similarity method and performs the performance on the algorithm. The research method used is the theory of pattern recognition in image processing with 2 processes, namely the Training Process and the Testing Process. The value of each letter pattern obtained in the Training Process will be the weight benchmark for the Testing Process, so that we can measure the performance level of Algortima Pierce Similarity in detecting the Jar letter pattern. The results can vary for each letter pattern ranging from 60% to 80%.

This article explores the use of the Institute for Scientific Information’s Journal Citation Reports (JCR) for journal management in academic libraries. The advantages and disadvantages to using JCR citation data for journal management are outlined, and a literature review summarizes reported uses of these data by libraries and scholars. This study researches the impact of journal self-citation on JCR rankings of library and information science (LIS) and genetics journals. The 1994 rankings by impact factor and total citations received were recalculated with journal self-citations removed; then the recalculated rankings were compared to the original rankings to analyze the effect of self-citations. It is concluded that librarians can use JCR data without correcting for journal self-citation, although self-citations do exert a major effect on the rankings for a small number of journals.

ObjectivesThe objective of this retrospective study was to summarise the clinical manifestations of, and to analyse the incidence and risk factors of, Jarisch–Herxheimer reaction (JHR) during the treatment of children with symptomatic congenital syphilis.MethodsClinical data of 60 children with clinically and laboratory diagnosed congenital syphilis, hospitalised in Beijing Ditan Hospital between January 2010 and November 2015, were collected and analysed.ResultsA total of 11 patients with congenital syphilis (11/60, 18.3%) developed JHR. JHR occurred in 1–6 hour after the first dose of penicillin. Common clinical manifestations included fever (11/11, 100%), irritability (11/11, 100%), rapid pulse and breathing (11/11, 100%), exacerbation of existing rash (5/11, 45.6%) and chills (3/11, 27.3%). Of the 11 patients who developed JHR, 9 patients (9/11, 81.8%) had bone syphilis, 10 (10/11, 90.9%) had more than three organs affected by syphilis and 10 (10/11, 90.9%) had a high plasma concentration of rapid plasma reagin (RPR) (≥1:256); these percentages were significantly higher than in patients who had not developed JHR (p<0.05), suggesting that the occurrence of JHR was related to bone syphilis, having more than three organs affected by syphilis and a high plasma concentration of RPR.ConclusionsClinicians should be familiar with the risk factors for this reaction and its common clinical manifestations.

In recent climatic events in Australia, the need for frequent jar testing to determine optimum coagulant and flocculant aid doses became apparent in order to determine optimum treatment efficiencies. The generally applied jar test procedure can be time consuming and this prompted investigations for capacity to test waters more rapidly, for a range of treatment conditions and raw water qualities. The aim of the study reported here was to develop a rapid procedure for determination of dissolved organic matter (DOM) removal, measured as dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and UV absorbance (254 nm/cm) for a range of treatment conditions (coagulant dose and pH). Using a previously established predictive model (mEnCo) for coagulant determination, several coagulant doses were then predicted for application in a modified jar test protocol. Best fitted and predicted data using the exponential decay function compared with data from a 6× jar test procedure were obtained using three doses, 0.5× EnCD, EnCD and a VHD (≥2× EnCD). It is proposed that this procedure may be used to more rapidly determine treatment efficiency based on the removal of organics compared with traditionally applied jar tests.
