This article explores how Christian heritage is engaged with, strengthened, and contested in and through Swedish newspapers and in the annual Swedish Christmas calendar. Although Sweden is perceived as highly secular and characterized by an increased distance between the former state church and the Swedish population, ideas about Swedish cultural heritage are still tied to notions of a Christian past. Abstract (sommario):

This study examines the framing of Syria fighters in Swedish newspapers during selected time periods of 2016 and 2017. Syria Fighters refer to individuals who travel to Syria to join the ongoing conflict, an occurrence commonly known as Foreign Fighters. Using framing analysis and framing theory the study finds that Syria fighters and their actions are framed mainly as problematic and as a negative social phenomenon. The study also makes a comparison to similar, previous research of Dutch and Flemish newspapers and finds clear similarities as well as differences.

AbstractThis chapter examines the ambivalent relations between peddlers and hosts in the Northern Baltic in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In this period of modernization and growing consumption, peddlers played an important role for the distribution of consumer goods in the vast and sparsely populated region. Using the concepts of hospitality and securitization as analytical tools, the article focuses on the threats that peddlers were perceived to pose, the ambiguous relations between mobile traders and their sedentary hosts, and the ambivalent encounters around the goods that the peddlers carried. The sources consist of Finnish and Swedish newspapers, accessed through digital newspaper archives, and the responses to three ethnographic questionnaires. While both material types pose source critical challenges, the article illustrates how the conclusions that can be drawn on hospitality and rejection depend on which types of sources are studied and on the voice of which group in the host community they represent. The situational and relational character of hospitality is reflected in how the four groups of peddlers analyzed—knallar, “Rucksack Russians,” Eastern European Jews and Tatars—were received on a graded scale stretching from warm hospitality to extreme rejection.

Abstract At the peak of the ‘new economy’, the Swedish newspapers were reporting an interesting fact: women were entering financial services, joining not the old fashioned occupational groups such as bank clerks, but the avant-garde: traders and analysts. A survey following these announcements (Renemark 2003) revealed that the claim was unverifiable. True, there were several financial service companies reporting the arrival of female traders and analysts, but these were very small companies, and the ‘influx’ often meant one new woman employee.

This chapter examines how Nordic silent films circulated as far away from Scandinavia as in Australia. This far-flung distribution chain was facilitated and hampered by political and economic developments on both sides of the globe. In the 1910s, the Copenhagen-based Nordisk Film Company was the second largest exporter of films in the world. Distributed primarily by Pathé Frérès and Nordisk, Swedish and Danish silent films played to great success all over the continent of Australia. Early Nordic stars, in particular Asta Nielsen and Valdemar Psilander, were beloved. As products of neutral countries, Danish and Swedish films continued to circulate internationally during the war. By the time silent film was rendered obsolete by sound film, the distribution of Nordic film in the Pacific was largely a thing of the past. Abstract As I was writing this book in Sweden, an interesting case of linguistic change came to my attention. It seems that young people in Sweden have begun using the word nord (from American English nerd) to refer to someone who is stupid. There is also an adjectival form nordig ‘nerdy’. This new usage has been commented on by the newspapers and the radio, and some of my Swedish colleagues began noticing it over the summer of 1991. After some discussion, my colleagues and I concluded that nerd probably crossed the Atlantic to Sweden via the American film Revenge of the Nerds, which was translated in Swedish as Nordama kommer ‘The nerds are coming’. Some young people have apparently also picked up the word through visiting the United States. It has now been noticed in Denmark too. The influence and prestige of American pop culture on youth everywhere has no doubt been responsible for the introduction of a number of new English words into other languages.
