Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this research is to examine the social phobia status of children who are trained three days a week in swimming activity in summer sport activities. For some children, the swimming learning process can be a source of stress in itself, sometimes even at the level of social phobia. There are thoughts and researches in the directions that the level of social phobia is minimized, especially social, cultural, reconstructive and sport activities. In this context, it is thought that knowing to what extent the swimming activity affects social phobia status will be important by families, educ

I use a brand of social contract theory derived from David Gauthier to delimit precisely what might be permissible in the methods of conception and gestation of a child. More specifically, Gauthier posits a rule that is supposed to govern behavior among individuals prior to but in anticipation of the rise of social interaction. I argue that this rule can be appropriately applied to the interactions between a parent and her unborn child. I review other social contract models in an effort to show that Gauthier's is preferable to these. I also address other accounts concerned with parental obliga

Abstract (sommario):
Residential energy and water consumption depend on dwelling structure and the behaviour of residents. Aspects of residential behaviour can be derived from census data. Dwelling information is harder to obtain. Using both aerial and street-level views from Google mapping products, exterior dwelling characteristics were captured in each of 40 postal areas in and around Melbourne, Australia. This approach saved the time and cost of travelling to the widely spread suburbs and provided data not otherwise available. The census and dwelling data were compared with resource usage statistics in linear regression models. It was found that energy and water use are highly correlated, with socio-economic variables better explaining water consumption and dwelling structure factors better explaining energy consumption. Nevertheless, the proportions of households that include a couple with children and have a swimming pool provided useful models of variations in both energy and water use. Applications to planning through spatially explicit scenario testing were developed in ArcGIS ModelBuilder.

Abstract (sommario):
In this chapter, the authors consider a researcher's perspective in projects involving design of assistive technologies for and with children who have moderate to severe limitations, such as cognitive impairments, impulse control issues, strongly reduced vision, or speech problems. The secondary objective is to introduce the concept of vulnerability in such complex design contexts, exploring it in relation to researchers, the user group, and other stakeholders. They argue that awareness of diverse risks can lead to a design process that reduces or even eliminates some of these risks, empowering both researchers and users in the process. The case used as a basis for discussion is that of an iPad app design for and with children in a special education class, and later, with children in occupational therapy.

Abstract (sommario):
Chapter 4 investigates how emotion regulation is a socially constructed, culturally influenced phenomenon. Investigating emotion regulation through a cultural lens provides a viable framework to differentiate social norms according to a larger social context. In Western cultures fostering autonomy and cultivating a positive personal self-concept is important for emotion regulation. In contrast, in non-Western cultures achieving harmony among relationships is the primary goal of emotion regulation. Cross-cultural research has determined both similarities and differences. Accordingly, empirical findings suggest emotion expression is common in Western cultures, whereas, suppression is common among Asian cultures. Relatedly, the same regulatory strategies have divergent effects in different cultures. Research has demonstrated the association between suppression and psychopathology in Western cultures; however, emotional suppression has been associated with positive health outcomes in East Asian cultures. Yet, cultures are often heterogeneous in nature, supporting both autonomy and harmony; thus, future research should consider intra-cultural differences more closely.

Abstract (sommario):
This chapter provides a complement to the previous chapter through a consideration of parents’ beliefs about children’s social development. Five topics are considered: emotional development (including emotion recognition and emotion regulation), aggression (including bullying), moral development, peer relations, and gender-role development. These topics are not neatly compartmentalized; rather, aspects of two or more often flow together as children deal with their social worlds. Controlling one’s emotions, for example, may be necessary to avoid an aggressive act, which in turn may help to maintain good social relations with others. The author explores these interrelations throughout the chapter.

More people than ever are living in cities, and in these cities, more and more people are living alone. Using the example of Vienna, this paper investigates the subjective well-being of single households in the city. Previous research has identified positive and negative aspects of living alone (e.g., increased freedom vs. missing social embeddedness). We compare single households with other household types using data from the Viennese Quality of Life Survey (1995–2018). In our analysis, we consider overall life satisfaction as well as selected dimensions of subjective wellbeing (i.e., housing
