Testo completoThe study and use of thermal storage has increased in recent years due to the need to reduce production cost. The purpose of this paper is the modeling of a thermal storage system using spherical capsules with phase change material (water). The main point of the present work lies in the fact that the this system uses different sizes of balls in a single storage tank (usually, in thermal storage spherical capsules systems spherical capsules with a simple diameter only is employed). To form the ice caps, a fluid, with a temperature below the freezing temperature of water, flows permanently through the capsules, so there is an exchange of heat between the fluid and the capsules with water, which freezer. Ideally, all water inside the capsule should become ice, but the thermal resistance posed by the ice begins to interfere with the formation of the total water within the capsule. Another problem is the temperature of the fluid that exchanges heat with the water capsules. As the fluid temperature increases, downstream, time of ice formation is affected by the smaller temperature difference between fluid and capsule external wall.

According to the U.S. energy consumption survey in 2012, about 25% of the commercial and 42% of the residential building energy were used for heating. Despite the development of new and more efficient Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems over the years, the high energy consumption in heating is still one of the major energy efficiency issues. Studies showed that decreasing HVAC operating temperature set points by 4°F will result in energy savings of 15% or more. Thus, the smart localized heating control (SLHC) system was designed and prototyped to provide localized heat directly to a person so that HVAC can run at a lower temperature set point. SLHC detects human movement and delivers the heat based on the result of the target location estimation and temperature measurement feedback. To detect the human movement, image processing techniques were used; image segmentation, mass center detection, background subtraction using the Mixture of Gaussian model, and human feature detection. In SLHC, a near-infrared heater and a tracking function were used to provide an instant and a direct heat to the person in order to minimize wasting energy. The SLHC system is divided into the sensing and processing (SP) and the heating and regulating (HR) subsystem. The SP’s primary function is to process captured video images and measured temperature data. SP also generates and sends the heater operating signal to HR. HR purposes to control the heater’s direction and power based on the signal. The communication between SP and HR was established through Wi-Fi enabled development platform. The SLHC prototype successfully processed the sensing data and transmitted the control signal. The result shows that it detected human movement and estimated the person’s location in 3D space within 10% margin of error. Also, it delivered the focused heat to the surface of the human body and increased the temperature by 10.0°F in 3 minutes at the distance of 1.5m away from the heater. This cost-effective, wireless, and localized heating system demonstrates the potential to improve energy efficiency in buildings.

Testo completoSpacesuits utilized a rubberized layer of material to contain a pressurized atmosphere to facilitate respiration and maintain the physiologic functions of the astronaut residing within. However, the elasticity of the material makes it resistant to deformation increasing the amount of work required during movement. This becomes particularly fatiguing for the muscle groups controlling the motion of the hands and fingers. To mitigate this a robotic system was proposed and developed. The system built upon previous concepts and prototypes discovered through research efforts. It utilized electric motors to pull the index, ring, and middle fingers of the right hand closed, ideally overcoming the resistive force posed by the pressurized elastic material. The effect of the system was determined by comparing qualitative and quantitative data obtained during activities conducted with and without it within a glove box. It was found that the system was able to offload some of this elastic force though several characteristics of the design limited the full potential this device offered. None the less, the project was met with success and provides a solid platform for continued research and development.

In this paper, we implement a video-based spherical coordinate conversion system, through the combination of OpenGL which have the 3D stereo effect and OpenCL massive parallel computing power to achieve an interactive real-time 3D virtual scene image. Due to the general everyday life single photo taken with the camera view is very limited in scope, in order to get a larger image view even can reach 360 degrees surround effect we usually use image stitching (Image Stitching) technology rather than pictures of the scene adjacent joints. Here we use OpenCL parallel computing techniques to immediately convert multiple images into a panorama texture and present it as a 3D model, compared to traditional CPU approach, we can tell that the more images to process the better efficiency of parallel computing we can get. During the experiment, it shows that when we use NVIDIA 9600GT to process eight 640*480 images, OpenCL can at most enhance efficiency up to ninety times to be able to achieve real-time interaction.

The thesis develops a 3D spherical grid model, base on spherical coordinate and combined with impact-ionization model for the spherical P-N junction breakdown simulation. At theory aspect, we use poisson’s equation, electron and hole continuity equation to transfer the equivalent circuit into a model, and simulate the drift-diffusion current, generation and recombination current. At the structure, study the feature of spherical grid, and use trapezoid mesh to approximate the curvature, then build up the parameters. The breakdown voltage at spherical junction will be simulated with different radius and doping, and the result will be compared with Cartesian coordinate to verify this model. This model not only shows a good accuracy but also shows a less simulation time. Finally we investigate the application and feature of the 3D spherical grid model.

In many ball competitions, not only player’s position and skill, but also location of the ball plays major rule. This thesis use OpenCV to show how to detect and track the sphere in dynamic images. Inspired by Local Binary Pattern (LBP) texture feature. The LBP feature is to extract feature of center and its neighbor pixels and compare their strength. This thesis also refers to the Block-based Local Binary Patterns (BLBP) about how to get the image texture features. This method consists of two models: Spoke shape of Block-based Local Binary Patterns and Ring shape of Block-based Local Binary Patterns. In comparison model substituted neighborhood of pixel values around the center. In some shape and brightness of texture, BLBP can get much more texture information. In this thesis, we propose BLBP method, which integrates concept of Block-based Local Binary Pattern model; then with Texture-based approach to detect moving objects in the foreground. Finally by help of using of Hough-Circle method tracks the foreground sphere to achieve the ball tracking and detect effect.

ABSTRACT This study presents the experimental results of the movement of spherical particles with various sizes in a rotating annular cylinder. The sizes of the spherical particles used in experiments are 1.6cm, 3.5cm, 5cm and 8cm, respectively. And the density of the spherical particles are all about 2.5 / . The rotating speeds of the rotating annular cylinder taken in experiments in this study are 4rpm, 10rpm and 16rpm, respectively. Four rotating time (10sec, 30sec, 60sec and 120sec) are adopted to compare with the movement phenomenon. This study presents the movement states of the single size particles and mixing ones, including sliding, slumping and rolling movement states first. The influence of particles volumes, the ratio of coarse-thin particle contents (the ratio of coarse particles weight and thin particles weight), rotating time and rotating speed on movement states are then discussed. After determining the movement states, the movement of a single coarser particle in granular flow (including the movement phenomenon of a single coarser particle in granular flow and the measurement of the appearing time of the particle) is studied, and the influence of particle size and rotating speed on the appearing time of the particle are discussed. Finally, the movement of the mixing spherical particles with various sizes (including the movement phenomenon of the mixing spherical particles with various sizes and the changes of the coarse particles in each direction), the influence of rotating time, rotating speed and the ratio of coarse-thin particle contents on the changes of the coarse particle quantities are studied. The experiment demonstrates that the rotating speed increase, the granular flow in the annular cylinder will display the movement phenomenon of sliding, slumping and rolling. At the sliding state, the granular flow profile is close to the critical profile. At the slumping state, the granular flow slumps periodically in the annular cylinder, and the surface slope of slumping state before slumping has direct ratio with rotating speed, and the surface slope of slumping state after slumping has an inverse ratio with rotating speed. If the ratio of coarse-thin particle contents is 1:1, the slumping range increases with rotating speed. However, if the ratio of coarse-thin particle contents is 3:7 and 1:9, the slumping range is smaller. At the rolling state of the single size particles, the surface slope of the granular flow is bigger than the critical one, but it is smaller than the surface slope of slumping state before slumping. Whichever movement states, the shape of profile of granular flow influenced by rotating time is not certainly obvious. Whichever rotating speed, the case of the ratio of coarse-thin particle contents is 1:1, the granular flow volumes is the maximum, the second is 3:7, and 1:9 is the minimum. However, at the same rotating speed, the granular flow volumes before slumping is bigger than the one after slumping. At the portion of the movement of a single coarser particle in granular flow, the results demonstrate that when the ratio of relative particle size or the rotating speed increases, the first appearing time of the coarser particle will decrease, but the second appearing time is not relative obviously to the ratio of relative particle size. At the portion of the movement of the mixing spherical particles with various sizes, when the annular cylinder starts the rotation, the coarse and thin particles in the annular cylinder will be separated, and the coarse particles will move toward the front end and two sides gradually. Besides, the paper will take the experimental data to explain the phenomenon.

ABSTRACT The paper presents the experimental results of the movement of spherical particles in a rotating annular cylinder. Two kinds of spherical particles were used in the experiments: polystyrene pellets and glass marbles. The percentage of the cylinder volume occupied by spherical particles is referred as percent fill(F). Based on percent fills, the movements of the particles in the cylinder can be classified into two types. The first type (type A) is that the particles in the cylinder only touch the outer cylinder while the inner cylinder has no effect on the particles when F is less than 0.17. The second type (type B) is that the particles in the cylinder touch both the outer and inner cylinders when F is more than 0.22. There is a transition zone when F is between 0.17 and 0.22. The present study investigates the raised height of the particles, the distribution of particle flow velocity in the cylinder and the relation between the distribution and the rotating speed of the cylinder under different kinds of percent fills, and calculate the shear stress acting on the walls of the cylinder. The result shows that the raised height of the particles in the cylinder increases with the cylinder rotating speed. Under the same rotating speed, the bigger the percent fill is, the bigger the raised height will be. Based on the measured geometric shape of the spherical particles flow pattern in the cylinder, we can calculate the shear stress acting on the cylinder. The shear stress acting on the cylinder by the moving particles in the cylinder increases with the cylinder rotating speed. Under the same rotating speed, the bigger the percent fill is, the bigger the shear stress acting on the cylinder will be. The results also show that the dimensionless shear stress increases with Froude number, but seems independent of the percent fill. Besides, the present study also analyzes the distribution of particle flow velocity and discusses the side-wall effect on the particle movement.

Testo completoThe dispersion of an isolated, spherical, Brownian particle immersed in a Newtonian fluid between infinite parallel plates is investigated. Expressions are developed for both a 'molecular' contribution to dispersion, which arises from random thermal fluctuations, and a 'convective' contribution, arising when a shear flow is applied between the plates. These expressions are evaluated numerically for all sizes of the particle relative to the bounding plates, and the method of matched asymptotic expansions is used to develop analytical expressions for the dispersion coefficients as a function of particle size to plate spacing ratio for small values of this parameter.
It is shown that both the molecular and convective dispersion coefficients decrease as the size of the particle relative to the bounding plates increase. When the particle is small compared to the plate spacing, the coefficients decrease roughly proportional to the particle size to plate spacing ratio. When the particle closely fills the space between the plates, the molecular dispersion coefficient approaches zero slowly as an inverse logarithmic function of the particle size to plate spacing ratio, and the convective dispersion coefficent approaches zero approximately proportional to the width of the gap between the edges of the sphere and the bounding plates.

A fingertip-movement analysis system is proposed in this paper. This system can distinguish the gesture like flick-right, flick-left, pinching to zoom in and out and taking picture to be a way for human-computer interaction. We combine background subtraction and skin detection to extract hand region. This method can remove most noise in the complex background. After hand extraction we use particle random diffusion algorithm to position fingertip. The algorithm uses particles to diffuse to the contour of hand randomly. Then keep the particles which are located in fingertip. After that, a particle grouping algorithm is applied to distinguish each fingertip. Fingertip position is the average position of each group’s particles. The system will analyze fingertip in three different ways which are single fingertip-movement analysis, double fingertip-movement analysis and four fingertip-movement analysis. By this system, user can easily interact with computer without any fingertip marker. The experimental results show that our system can operate in real-time at a frame rate of 29fps and with 84.58% fingertips detection rate.

Abstract A new type of piezoelectric spherical motor by means of traveling wave is developed. The spherical motor comprises of the stator and rotor. Curved piezoelectric actuator is designed in order to attach to the spherical surface. A series of the curved piezoelectric actuators are laid in a line around a spherical surface. Applying appropriate voltage signal with phase difference on the neighboring actuators, traveling wave is thus generated on the hemispherical shell. Design and analysis and experiment for one and two DOF operation are presented in this article. An FEM software (ANSYS) is used to analysis the hemi-spherical stator. For performance improvement, groove on hemi-spherical shell along the ceramics actuators is designed to avoid from the disturbance wave so that can guide the rotation direction as well as preload mechanism is designed to increase the rotation efficiency. A test bed is designed on which experiment is carried to measure the rotation speed and torque of the spherical motor and verify its system performance.

Communication is an easy gesture for normal persons, but for disabled persons, it may be much harder for them to communicate with another person. There are many publications on how to use Assistive Technology to help disabled persons to communicate more effectively with someone. In this research, we develop an Intelligent Head Movement Interpretation System (IHMTS) for physically disabled persons who can not communicate vocally with someone. The device combines a three dimensional locating system to produce a resulting product that can position ,track, and using pattern regonition to regonize the movement of the head that is using our device to generate alphabetical letters from A to Z by generating a motion. We explore the use of Time Different of Arrival (TDOA) measurement to get the distance between Transmission Processing Unit (TPU) and Distance Sensor (DSR). The Sensing Processing Unit (SPU) collects the data of every DSR and sends data to Interpretation Processing Unit (IPU). IPU is a high precision 3D locating system that tracks and regonize the movement.

In the modern era of convenient transportation and information abundance people can easily get information from the internet and reach any place in mind with transport. However, for the physically-limited community, they can not move at will, but their eyes are able to rotate freely. So the development of a set of eye movement control system makes their daily life easier and more complete. The purpose of this research is to construct a set of "eye movement control system", using EOG method (Electro-OculoGram, EOG) as a way to capture eye movement signals. Eye movement signals are processed and identified by circuit boards, sent to microprocessor to transform into control signals, and finally linked as control signals to the controller, so that the user can execute the action they want by using this system. In this thesis, the tracking of eye movement is used to construct four different commands, and the user can quickly and precisely control switch. The equipment structure used in this system is simple, has small size components, easy to carry, possess good stability and easily controlled by the user.

This thesis develops techniques for system design, modeling and hierarchical sliding-mode control of a spherical inverted pendulum control system. A mechatronic approach is employed to design and construct the system structure for the spherical inverted pendulum control system. With the structure, Newtonian and Lagrangian mechanics are respectively employed to establish two types of mathematical models, decoupled and coupled. Both models are shown consistent under two special cases. Hierarchical siding-mode control and backstepping technique are used to propose decoupled and coupled controllers so as to maintain the nutation angle at zero and achieve position tracking at the same time. Via Matlab/Simulink, the effectiveness and merit of both controllers are exemplified by conducting several simulations on the coupled model. Experimental results indicate that the proposed decoupled controller is capable of providing satisfactory control performance for the spherical inverted pendulum.

The two major bottlenecks of developing solar cell are cost effective and solar cell efficiency. Not all incident light of spectrum is absorbed by solar cell and transformed to current completely in the fact. The maximum efficiency of the single solar cell is about 25% which is almost achieved to the theoretical value. The thesis mainly studies on spherical solar cell combining with reflector and mentions the way that can increase the power of electricity output. It not only increases the region of incident light, but also increases the power of electricity output at the same time if designing the reflector system of spherical solar cell has be done. Design the better reflector (Type B and Type C) geometrically, calculate the Shape Factor of incident light to the Si spherical and the area of incident light with mathematics in the thesis. The two new types (Type B and Type C) of the reflector system are increased the region of incident light by using the incident light which reflects it to the bottom of the spherical. The incident light of region can be reached approximating 100% as the incident light is 90°.

A semi-spherical microphone array based sound localization system for service robots is proposed in this thesis, which offers the robot hearing functions to distinguish where the sound is. The hardware structure of this system consists of 12 capacitor microphones disposed in two layers on the semi-sphere of 19 cm diameter. In which, the upper layer disposes four microphones at every 90 degrees, and the lower layer disposes eight ones at every 45 degrees. The hardware can be mounted upon the head of the robot to determine the 3D relative locality relationship between the sound and the robot. Based on this data, the robot can perform face-to-face conversations, direct interaction, or/and objective searching. Besides, since the proposed system applies the fuzzy localization inference frame, even in the environment with higher electrical noise and echo interference, it also can acquire satisfactory recognition. From the experimental results, it can be seen that the proposed system not only has improved sound localization recognition, but also provides the 3D locality information of the sound. One can adopt this framework on robotic systems to arise the flexibility of human-robot, environment-robot, or service interaction. It also makes the robot closer to life, moreover lets the robot become a member of family.
