Abstract (sommario):
A taboo is an “unthinkable” action. Even the thought of violating a taboo triggers a punishment. We consider a model in which taboos are part of the definition of one's identity. Deliberating over breaking the taboo changes the individual's choice set, and provides information on possible private benefits. The strength of the taboo is determined by the number of individuals that obey it. We analyze the relationship between social heterogeneity and taboos' strength. We then examine societies in which individuals choose among several identities characterized by different taboos. We characterize the conditions that give rise to a multi-identity society. (JEL Z13)

Abstract (sommario):
Civilized society like Karo knows taboo culture and how to avoid it well, so that they can be avoided from social conflict and can live peacefully. However, taboo in language and the way to avoid them are considered increasingly scarce as globalization develops among the current millennial generation. As an effort to provide an understanding about the matter concerned towards future generations, this study describes various ways of avoiding the three types of taboo in Karo: taboo in kinship, i.e. among bengkila and permain, turangku and turangku, and mami and kela; context-specific taboos, i.e. words derived from non-taboo words, and words related to social and physical defects; and general taboos, i.e. swearing and unmentionable words. This research was conducted using descriptive qualitative with ethnographic method. The data were obtained from the key informants who were from indigenous people of Tanah Karo Regency. It is found that taboos in kinship can be avoided by strategy of third-person intermediary, strategy of metaphor through object, and strategy of using the word nina. Context-specific taboo and general taboo can be avoided by various forms of euphemism. However, taboo of swearing type does not have form of refinement because of its purpose and function as emotive expression.

Abstract (sommario):
The study analyses three of the most powerful taboos of primitive society: the taboo of living corpses, the taboo of masters and that of incest. Starting out from Freud’s assumption according to which any ritual practice has its origin in primordial crime, we can assert that all taboos of primitive societies are derived from the taboo of death. It is from this taboo that all others are derived, becoming consequences of the fear of death: the dream, the trance, crime, visions, violence. This obsession with death gives birth to monsters. Among its offspring we might count: incest, animism, the act of relating to enemies, the tendency to associate with a master, the fear of living corpses.

Abstract (sommario):
The study investigated how gender and age disparities, and situation/ context shape the use of sex-related verbal taboos. It adopted the qualitative orientation which involved semi-structured interviews with a total of 20 participants drawn from four purposively chosen communities or Igbo areas namely, Edda/Afikpo, Owerri, Uzuakoli and Awka. It was framed around the taboo theory of gender differences. The study identified some terms relating to sex and other parts of the body which constitute verbal taboo, and highlighted how gender and age disparities, as well as contexts shape the use of the verbal taboos. It also observed more female restrictive use of the taboo terms/expressions than male which speaks to the culture of patriarchy. Varied contexts or situations of use of the taboo terms were identified including ‘closed’ and ‘open’ contexts. It was concluded that gender and age disparities as a feature of verbal taboos depend on the culture and their underlying beliefs and values.

De, Klerk Vivian A. "How taboo are taboo words for girls?" Language in Society, 1992. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1011596.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
In the past five years, there has been much interest in the question of whether women are really as concerned about politeness and status as they have been made out to be by such writers as Baroni and D'Urso (1984), Crosby and Nyquist (1977), Lakoff (1973), Spender (1980), and Trudgill (1972). Despite the commonly held perception that it is only males who bandy about derogatory and taboo words (Bailey 1985; Flexner 1975), Risch (1987) provided counterevidence based on data obtained in the United States. The results of the present study, based on data obtained in South Africa, strongly support her findings and challenge the assumption that women stick to standard speech, citing evidence that young females are familiar with, and use, a wide range of highly taboo/slang items themselves. In particular, attention is devoted to the question of pejorative words applicable to males and females, respectively, and the view that there are only a few pejorative terms commonly used to describe males (particularly by females) is challenged. (Women's language, politeness, linguistic taboo, stereotypes, slang, expletives, prestige forms).

Clements, Andrea D., Natalie A. Cyphers e Lawrence D. Childress. "Is Experimentally Increasing Religiosity Taboo?" Digital Commons @ East Tennessee State University, 2014. https://dc.etsu.edu/etsu-works/7258.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
An abundance of evidence supports that high stress levels often predict poor health, and high levels of religiosity, broadly defined, predict good health. It is possible that one mechanism by which religiosity positively impacts health is by preventing or reducing stress response. Studies measuring Surrender (Surrender to God from a Christian Religious Tradition) have shown that religiosity measured in this way is consistently negatively related to stress levels in college samples and community samples of pregnant women. The next step toward investigating a possible causal mechanism of religiosity on stress level is to experimentally manipulate religiosity. If it is found that it is possible to experimentally increase religiosity, the stage is then set to endeavor to change health and influences on health, such as stress, by such an increase. Specifically religiosity could be manipulated to determine whether changes in religiosity actually affect stress levels. Although this is the normal progression when investigating the efficacy of medical treatments, there has been significant opposition to the manipulation of religiosity. It is understandable that attempting to reduce religiosity would be unethical, but if there are potential health benefits to increasing religiosity, this field of research would seem to be worthy of investigation. The research community has been resistant to fund or even to approve such studies. Even more surprisingly, the medical community, while embracing the use of pharmacological substances to improve health or reduce disease (even for pregnant patients), remains reluctant to even investigate the efficacy of prescribed increases in religiosity, which would represent less physiological risk. Why is there this specific prejudice against religiosity as an intervention? Is it due to the lack of an observable mechanism? There are medications for which the true mechanism of effect is unclear, yet they are used because of the value of the effect. Is it because of the potentially reduced need for medical or pharmacologic intervention? Is it because it is poorly understood by many health care providers? If the ethics regarding human subjects research are embraced, a study should illustrate the potential benefits for both participants and others that outweighs any potential harm to the participants. It seems that on that basis, such experimental studies of the effects of increased religiosity on health should be considered.

Barnes, Jamal. "Why the torture taboo matters". Thesis, Barnes, Jamal (2013) Why the torture taboo matters. PhD thesis, Murdoch University, 2013. https://researchrepository.murdoch.edu.au/id/eprint/21554/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Torture is one of the most prohibited practices in international society and has become a symbol of cruel and unnecessary suffering. Despite this absolute prohibition, torture is widely practiced by states around the world. This disparity between the prohibition of torture and the practice of states raises fundamental questions about the role and power of moral norms in world politics. Does the torture taboo matter? Or are political realists correct in arguing that power politics rules? This thesis makes the paradoxical argument that despite its widespread violation, not only does the torture taboo matter, but that its strength can be found by studying its violation. The torture taboo constitutes state identities and interests and shapes state actions. Even during times of security crisis, the torture taboo is not forgotten. States hide, deny, and re-define their torture, outsource it to other states, or use techniques that do not leave marks on the body. The fact states go to such great lengths to hide their use of torture demonstrates not the weakness of the taboo, but rather its strength. In order to demonstrate the power of the torture taboo, and explain why states deny their use of torture, I trace a genealogy of the taboo from the eighteenth century to the twenty first century. I show how international society came to understand torture the way it does today. I show also that the taboo has not developed in a linear fashion, but has become more robust over time due to a series of fortuitous events, and, most surprisingly, in response to widespread inhumanity. By showing that the history of the torture taboo is also a story about what it means to be human, I seek to show that the taboo contains normative values immanent in the present that are integral to experiencing the good life.

Horlacher, Stefan. "Taboo, Transgression, and Literature: An Introduction". Palgrave Macmillan, 2010. https://tud.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A36442.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Taboo and Transgression in British Literature from the Renaissance to the Present develops an innovative overview of the interdisciplinary theoretical approaches to the topic that have emerged in recent years. Alongside exemplary model analyses of key periods and representative primary texts, this exciting new anthology of critical essays has been specifically designed to fill a major gap in the field of literary and cultural studies. This book traces the complex dynamic and ongoing negotiation of notions of transgression and taboo as an essential, though often neglected, facet to understanding the development, production, and conception of literature from the early modern Elizabethan period through postmodern debates. The combination of a broad theoretical and historical framework covering almost fifty representative authors and uvres makes this essential reading for students and specialists alike in the fields of literary studies and cultural studies.

McGuire, Kathryn B. (Kathryn Bezard). "The Incest Taboo in Wuthering Heights". Thesis, North Texas State University, 1987. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc500863/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Contemporary analysis of Wuthering Heights necessitates a re-appraisal in light of advancements in the study of incest in non-literary fields such as history, anthropology, and especially psychology. A modern reading suggests that an unconscious incest taboo impeded Heathcliff and Cathy's expectation of normal sexual union and led them to seek union after death. John Milton's Paradise Lost provides a paradigm by which to examine the consequences of incest from two perspectives: that of incest as a metaphor for evil, as represented in Heathcliff; that of incest as symbolic of pre-Lapsarian innocence, as represented in Cathy. The tragic consequences of Heathcliff and Cathy's incestuous fixation are resolved by the socially-condoned marriage of Hareton and Catherine, which illuminates Bronte's belief in the Miltonic theme that good inevitably triumphs over evil.

Abstract (sommario):

Taboo language is a broad definition, and researchers have defined it in various categories. Using taboo language, to a great extent, is widely considered as offensive and inappropriate, as well as a specialty of men rather than women. Men and women are often said to use taboo language differently. This study aims to analyze the use of taboo language in conversations of women’s, men’s and mixed-gender talk in some episodes from the American TV series Sex and the City. The study will examine the differences and similarities of using taboo language in male and female speech in terms of gender differences, and conversational strategies in general.

Bhakta, Amita, e Naomi Vernon. The Menopause: Hidden WASH Needs. The Sanitation Learning Hub, Institute of Development Studies, agosto 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/slh.2023.014.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This SLH Learning Paper provides practical guidance for the WASH sector on meeting the additional needs of women going through the (peri)menopause, a phase of life rarely spoken about. The paper outlines what the perimenopause and menopause are, and how the WASH sector can use feminist and participatory methods to engage with this taboo topic. It draws on data from Ghana and the UK to illustrate (peri)menopausal women’s hidden water needs for bathing, laundry and drinking, and sanitation and hygiene needs to support menstrual health and hygiene, and incontinence management. The paper provides practical tips for WASH practitioners to adapt existing programmes to integrate the (peri)menopause, outlining actions for programme start up and design, and programming activities which need to be undertaken.

Abstract (sommario):
Sanitation and hygiene issues often deal with uncomfortable, hidden and sometimes taboo areas of life, which people don’t want to talk about publicly, let alone look at. It can be profoundly powerful to get people to face unpleasant challenges if done in a way that is respectful. This is where the creativity encouraged by visual methods, such as participatory video, can be very useful. Participatory video is a powerful group-work method for people whose needs and priorities are often overlooked. Through the process, barriers faced by the group can be explored, helping gain a deeper understanding of how certain people experience, understand and respond to their realities. This paper outlines key elements within a participatory video process and how this process can be valuable to the sanitation and hygiene research and programming.

Byrne, Maisie-Rose. Playing Politics with Periods: Why the Abolition of the ‘Tampon Tax’ is Spreading Across the World. Institute of Development Studies, maggio 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/ictd.2023.025.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
From pet food to sunscreen, proposals to cut value-added tax (VAT) on a range of products and services are ever increasing. One of the best-known and far-reaching campaigns of this type has been the fight to abolish VAT on feminine hygiene products. More popularly known as the ‘tampon tax’, this issue has united campaigners from across to globe, contributing to policymakers in up to 25 countries removing or reducing taxes on menstrual products since Kenya’s landmark decision in 2004. Framed through a simple and evocative lens of fairness and equality, the campaign to end the ‘tampon tax’ has caught the attention of the public, press and policymakers alike, catapulting the oft-taboo issue of menstrual health to the top of the political agenda. Whilst social, economic, and menstrual health contexts vary per adopting country, the core message of the political announcements has stayed the same: abolishing the ‘tampon tax’ will address gender equality by resulting in more accessible and affordable menstrual products for women and girls.

Food taboos and their perceived reasons among pregnant women in Ethiopia: A Systematic review, 2022. INPLASY - International Platform of Registered Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocols, gennaio 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.37766/inplasy2023.1.0078.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Review question / Objective: The objective of this systematic review was to synthesize the available evidence on food taboos and their perceived reasons among pregnant women in Ethiopia to posit comprehensive and precise evidence for decision making. The systematic review has addressed the following two questions: What are the various foods considered taboos by pregnant women in Ethiopia? What are the perceived reasons for food taboos by pregnant women in Ethiopia? Condition being studied: Undernutrition among pregnant women has been one of the serious public health challenges in Ethiopia. Food taboos prevent eating certain food items thus compromising one’s dietary diversity and quality which, in turn, would lead to poor health and nutritional outcomes. Evidence shows that food taboos are largely associated with maternal and fetal malnutrition during pregnancy and could have consequences on the mothers and their children later in life. Realizing such associations between food taboos and maternal undernutrition which in turn has fatal consequences, this systematic review synthesized evidence on food taboos and their perceived reasons among pregnant women in Ethiopia.

Melnyk, Andriy. «INTELLECTUAL DARK WEB» AND PECULIARITIES OF PUBLIC DEBATE IN THE UNITED STATES. Ivan Franko National University of Lviv, marzo 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.30970/vjo.2021.50.11113.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The article focuses on the «Intellectual Dark Web», an informal group of scholars, publicists, and activists who openly opposed the identity politics, political correctness, and the dominance of leftist ideas in American intellectual life. The author examines the reasons for the emergence of this group, names the main representatives and finds that the existence of «dark intellectuals» is the evidence of important problems in US public discourse. The term «Intellectual Dark Web» was coined by businessman Eric Weinstein to describe those who openly opposed restrictions on freedom of speech by the state or certain groups on the grounds of avoiding discrimination and hate speech. Extensive discussion of the phenomenon of «dark intellectuals» began after the publication of Barry Weiss’s article «Meet the renegades from the «Intellectual Dark Web» in The New York Times in 2018. The author writes of «dark intellectuals» as an informal group of «rebellious thinkers, academic apostates, and media personalities» who felt isolated from traditional channels of communication and therefore built their own alternative platforms to discuss awkward topics that were often taboo in the mainstream media. One of the most prominent members of this group, Canadian clinical psychologist Jordan Peterson, publicly opposed the C-16 Act in September 2016, which the Canadian government aimed to implement initiatives that would prevent discrimination against transgender people. Peterson called it a direct interference with the right to freedom of speech and the introduction of state censorship. Other members of the group had a similar experience that their views were not accepted in the scientific or media sphere. The existence of the «Intellectual Dark Web» indicates the problem of political polarization and the reduction of the ability to find a compromise in the American intellectual sphere and in American society as a whole.
