Abstract (sommario):
Toby Walsh in “The Singularity May Never Be Near” gives six arguments to support his point of view that technological singularity may happen, but that it is unlikely. In this paper, we provide analysis of each one of his arguments and arrive at similar conclusions, but with more weight given to the “likely to happen” prediction.

Abstract (sommario):
There is both much optimisim and pessimism around artificial intelligence (AI) today. The optimists are investing millions of dollars, and even in some cases billions of dollars into AI. The pessimists, on the other hand, predict that AI will end many things: jobs, warfare, and even the human race. Both the optimists and the pessimists often appeal to the idea of a technological singularity, a point in time where machine intelligence starts to run away, and a new, more in- telligent “species” starts to inhabit the earth. If the optimists are right, this will be a moment that fundamentally changes our economy and our society. If the pessimists are right, this will be a moment that also fundamentally changes our economy and our society. It is therefore very worthwhile spending some time deciding if either of them might be right.

Abstract (sommario):
We explicitly analyze the trajectories of learning near singularities in hierarchical networks, such as multilayer perceptrons and radial basis function networks, which include permutation symmetry of hidden nodes, and show their general properties. Such symmetry induces singularities in their parameter space, where the Fisher information matrix degenerates and odd learning behaviors, especially the existence of plateaus in gradient descent learning, arise due to the geometric structure of singularity. We plot dynamic vector fields to demonstrate the universal trajectories of learning near singularities. The singularity induces two types of plateaus, the on-singularity plateau and the near-singularity plateau, depending on the stability of the singularity and the initial parameters of learning. The results presented in this letter are universally applicable to a wide class of hierarchical models. Detailed stability analysis of the dynamics of learning in radial basis function networks and multilayer perceptrons will be presented in separate work.

Abstract (sommario):
A generalized expression of the stress-singularity function at the tip of artificial crack is proposed, and a formula to calculate the stress intensity factor of artificial crack is obtained in the paper. The solutions of stress singularity of a cracked bi-materials beam under uniform tension and bending were computed. The results show that the degree of stress-singularity is determined by the exponent λ at the tip of artificial crack, and the exponent λ is, not only determined by materials parameter of artificial crack but also by angle. Key words: artificial crack; bi-material; stress singularity; eigen value; stress extrapolation method

Abstract (sommario):
Constructing and understanding arguments is often difficult but key to both philosophyand other parts of the everyday life. Some methods to ease this task has been developed. One of the methods developed within informal reasoning is argument diagramming, amethod to structure and visualize arguments. This essay takes a complicated argumentabout the fate of the universe, put forward by futurist Ray Kurzweil in his book TheSingularity is Near, as well as some critique published against said argument, as a casestudy for the application of argument diagramming on unstructured arguments fromoutside the field of philosophy. To arrive at a diagram that can be easily grasped andread but still contains all information of the original argument, this essay developsa method of splitting sub-diagrams off of a main diagram. Analysing the resultingdiagrams shows that the plausibility of Kurzweil’s argument is heavily dependent on afew, critical premises at the lower levels of the diagram.

Abstract (sommario):
In this thesis, we deal with the long time dynamics for solutions of the L2 critical and supercritical generalized KdV equations. The first part of this work is devoted to construct a stable self-similar blow up dynamics for slightly L2 supercritical gKdV equations in the energy space H1. The proof relies on the self-similar profile constructed by H. Koch. We will also give a specific description of the formation of singularity near the blow up time. The second part is devoted to construct blow up solutions to the slightly L2 supercritical gKdV equations with multiple blow up points. The key idea is to consider solutions which behaves like a decoupled sum of bubbles. And each bubble behaves like a self-similar blow up solutions with a single blow up point. Then we can use a classic topological argument to ensure that each bubble blows up at the same time. Here, we require a higher regularity of the initial data to control the solution between the different blow up points. Finally, in the third part, we consider the L2 critical gKdV equations with a saturated perturbation. In this case, any solution with initial data in H1 is always global in time and bounded in H1. We will give a explicit classification of the flow near the ground states. Under some suitable decay assumptions, there are only three possibilities: (i) the solution converges asymptotically to a solitary wave; (ii) the solution is always in some small neighborhood of the modulated family of the ground state, but blows down at infinite time; (iii) the solution leaves any small neighborhood of the modulated family of the ground state

Abstract (sommario):
We consider a real bivariate polynomial function vanishing at the origin and exhibiting a strict local minimum at this point. We work in a neighbourhood of the origin in which the non-zero level curves of this function are smooth Jordan curves. Whenever the origin is a Morse critical point, the sufficiently small levels become boundaries of convex disks. Otherwise, these level curves may fail to be convex, as was shown by Coste. The aim of the present thesis is twofold. Firstly, to construct examples of non-Morse strict local minima whose sufficiently small level curves are far from being convex. And secondly, to study a combinatorial object measuring this non-convexity, namely the Poincaré-Reeb tree of the restriction of the first coordinate to the region bounded by a given level curve. These planar trees are rooted and their vertices roughly speaking correspond to points on the curve with vertical tangent lines. The main objective of our study is to characterise all possible topological types of Poincaré-Reeb trees. To this end, we construct a family of examples realising a large class of such trees. As a preliminary step, we restrict our attention to the univariate case, using a tool inspired by Ghys’ work. One of our main results gives a new and constructive proof of the existence of Morse polynomials whose associated permutation (the so-called “Arnold’s snake”) is separable

Abstract (sommario):
In the face of ever more precise experiments, the standard model of cosmology has proven to be tremendously robust over the past decades. Inflation or ekpyrosis provide a basis for solving some of its remaining conceptual issues - they are a beautiful and natural simplifi- cation to our understanding of the universes early history; yet they leave many questions unanswered and raise new problems. For example, inflationary theories fail to be predictive as long as eternal inflation is not better understood. At the same time, ekpyrotic theories struggle to explain the transition from a contracting to an expanding phase - the so-called bounce. Both of them lack any understanding or description of the origin of everything and contain cosmological singularities. Here, we provide concrete steps towards shedding a light on these mysteries. The overarching theme that guides most chapters in this thesis is how to deal with cosmological singularities and whether they can be resolved without invoking extraordinary physics. In the first part, we construct classically non-singular bounces in the most general closed, homogeneous but anisotropic space-time. In the second part we analyze the effect of introducing quantum mechanics semi-classically to cosmology and show that quantum effects are helpful in resolving cosmological singularities. We demonstrate that anisotropies do not hinder the universe’s creation from nothing. Furthermore, we construct numerical solutions in which the universe tunnels to a different state before reaching a singularity. With that, we resolve for the first time cosmological singularities without the use of extravagant physics.

Abstract (sommario):

The big bang theory is a model of the universe which makes the striking prediction that the universe began a finite amount of time in the past at the so called "Big Bang singularity." We explore the physical and mathematical justification of this surprising result. After laying down the framework of the universe as a spacetime manifold, we combine physical observations with global symmetrical assumptions to deduce the FRW cosmological models which predict a big bang singularity. Next we prove a couple theorems due to Stephen Hawking which show that the big bang singularity exists even if one removes the global symmetrical assumptions. Lastly, we investigate the conditions one needs to impose on a spacetime if one wishes to avoid a singularity. The ideas and concepts used here to study spacetimes are similar to those used to study Riemannian manifolds, therefore we compare and contrast the two geometries throughout.
