Abstract (sommario):
ObjectivesRegular walking is a critical target of physical activity (PA) promotion, and dog walking is a feasible PA intervention for a large segment of the population. The purpose of this paper was to review PA interventions that have involved canine interactions and to evaluate their effectiveness. A secondary aim of this review was to highlight the populations, settings, designs and intervention components that have been applied so as to inform future research.DesignSystematic review.Data sourcesWe carried out literature searches to August 2019 using six common databases.Eligibility criteriaStudies included published papers in peer-reviewed journals and grey literature (theses and dissertations) in the English language that included any PA behaviour change design (ie, randomised controlled trial, quasi-experimental) that focused on canine-related intervention. We grouped findings by population, setting, medium, research design and quality, theory and behaviour change techniques applied.ResultsThe initial search yielded 25 010 publications which were reduced to 13 independent studies of medium and high risks of bias after screening for eligibility criteria. The approaches to intervene on PA were varied and included loaner dogs, new dog owners and the promotion of walking among established dog owners. Findings were consistent in showing that canine-assisted interventions do increase PA (82% of the studies had changes favouring the canine-facilitated intervention). Exploratory subanalyses showed that specific study characteristics and methods may have moderated the effects. Compared with studies with longer follow-up periods, studies with shorter follow-up favoured behaviour changes of the canine intervention over the control condition.ConclusionCanine-based PA interventions appear effective, but future research should move beyond feasibility and proof of concept studies to increase rigour, quality and generalisability of findings.

Abstract (sommario):
There are many queries regarding about the effects of physical activity during the gestation period. The aim of this study is to conduct a systematic review in order to find out the effectiveness of physical activity during pregnancy, as well as to determine which are the most beneficial. For this purpose, several databases have been used, such as Scopus, Scielo, Elsevier, ScienceDirect, ResearchGate, Springer Link, World Wide Science, MedlinePlus, Dialnet and Google Scholar using the keywords “physical activity” and “pregnancy”. The documents selected were 79, including articles and theses in Spanish and English published between 2004 and 2020. To carry out the descriptive analysis, eight variables have been extracted: research objectives, mean age of pregnant women, data collection tools, planning of physical activities performed, gestational period in which physical activities begin, the most frequent mode of delivery, intensity of activities and results of the study. After that, they have combined with each other, in order to obtain outcomes. The outcomes indicate that the main objective of the studies is to evaluate the effect of physical activity on the health of the mother over thirty years of age and that the period in which it is most commonly put into practice is from the first and second trimesters onwards. In conclusion, physical activity has very positive effects on pregnant women, as it does not alter the health of either the mother or the child. Likewise, the most beneficial are activities programs with moderate intensity.

ObjectiveTo investigate the association of running participation and the dose of running with the risk of all-cause, cardiovascular and cancer mortality.DesignSystematic review and meta-analysis.Data sourcesJournal articles, conference papers and doctoral theses indexed in Academic Search Ultimate, CINAHL, Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition, MasterFILE Complete, Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, Open Access Theses and Dissertations, PsycINFO, PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, SPORTDiscus and Web of Science.Eligibility criteria for selecting studiesProspective cohort studies on the association between running or jogging participation and the risk of all-cause, cardiovascular and/or cancer mortality in a non-clinical population of adults were included.ResultsFourteen studies from six prospective cohorts with a pooled sample of 232 149 participants were included. In total, 25 951 deaths were recorded during 5.5–35 year follow-ups. Our meta-analysis showed that running participation is associated with 27%, 30% and 23% lower risk of all-cause (pooled adjusted hazard ratio (HR)=0.73; 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.68 to 0.79), cardiovascular (HR=0.70; 95% CI 0.49 to 0.98) and cancer (HR=0.77; 95% CI 0.68 to 0.87) mortality, respectively, compared with no running. A meta-regression analysis showed no significant dose–response trends for weekly frequency, weekly duration, pace and the total volume of running.ConclusionIncreased rates of participation in running, regardless of its dose, would probably lead to substantial improvements in population health and longevity. Any amount of running, even just once a week, is better than no running, but higher doses of running may not necessarily be associated with greater mortality benefits.

Abstract (sommario):
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of interventions aimed at improving the sexuality of women with multiple sclerosis. Data sources: MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase and the Cochrane Library, as well as doctoral thesis databases Teseo and ProQuest Dissertations & Theses Global and the grey literature database Opengrey were searched, last on 15 October 2019. Journals related to the topic were also consulted. The bibliographic references of the articles included were reviewed. Method: Studies were selected if they included women with multiple sclerosis in whom interventions aimed at reducing sexual dysfunction were applied. Data extraction was carried out by two independent reviewers. The Jadad scale was used to evaluate the methodological quality of the studies included. Results: In total, 12 clinical trials were selected, and 611 patients were examined. Studies were classified into six interventions: sexual therapy (4), pharmaceutical drugs (3), pelvic floor exercises (2), yoga (1), mindfulness (1) and vaginal devices (1). Most of them improved some primary outcomes of sexual dysfunction such as lubrication, arousal, desire or orgasm. Pain was the most common secondary outcome evaluated and it became better in two studies including sexual therapy and in one intervention with pelvic floor exercises. Tertiary outcomes such as anxiety or depression were rarely examined, and they improved with sexual therapy and with OnabotulinumtoxinA. Conclusion: Sexual therapy, administration of OnabotulinumtoxinA, pelvic floor muscles exercises alone or combined with electrostimulation and the use of clitoral devices could be the most recommended interventions to improve the sexuality in women with multiple sclerosis.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract. The instrumental pedagogical practice constitutes a secular condition that takes place in education and the pedagogical exercise of physical education is permeated by this situation. Isolating ourselves from this conception implies investing in possibilities to overcome challenges that are part of teacher training and to value experiences that they develop in class based on new educational paradigms. This study aims to analyze research published between 2017 and 2019 in SCOPUS and in the Catalog of Theses and Dissertations of the Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel CAPES related to reflective pedagogical practice and its contributions to physical education. I regards to the methodology, a bibliographic research supported by the qualitative approach has been prioritized. Among the results, the studies point out that the reflexive approach to physical education depends on a link between thinking and doing and also indicate the relevance of linking teacher training to their own practices.

Abstract (sommario):
Action sports have increased in popularity, particularly over the past two decades. Research in the area has also proliferated, as multiple disciplinary perspectives and theoretical and conceptual frames have been applied to understanding and exploring a host of research questions concerning action sports culture, contexts and participants. However, despite this flurry of research activity, not much is known empirically about the learning of action sport participants, and few studies have focused specifically on learning in action sports. A scoping review was, therefore, conducted with the aim of synthesising the work that has been undertaken, and mapping future research agendas. Informed by Arksey and O’Malley’s six-stage framework, leading sports and education databases and Google Scholar were searched for empirical literature on learning in action sports published before July 2018. After the results were screened and relevant studies identified, data were extracted and analysed using a frequency and thematic analysis to form both a descriptive and thematic summary. A total of 78 empirical studies both from the peer-reviewed and grey literature were included in the scoping review. The frequency analysis concerned information on publication year, academic field, study design, study tools, sport and population. The thematic analysis led to the development of five main themes, addressing learning in social, physical, cultural, and cognitive/psychological contexts and via various forms of feedback. The majority of articles on learning in action sports were published from 2010 onward, suggesting a growing interest in the area. More theses/dissertations resulted in peer-reviewed publications; however, less than half of all reviewed journal articles were published in education/pedagogy journals. Theoretical and conceptual frameworks were rarely explicitly referenced and/or lacked clarity. There was consensus that learning in action sports is largely informal and self-regulated. With the increasing professionalisation of many action sports and their inclusion in international competition events and also in national curricula, an increase in more formalised learning is predicted. Finally, learning in action sports can be highly individualistic but only a few studies acknowledged this. A greater variety of research questions and methodologies, and more work across disciplinary boundaries will assist in the generation of new knowledge.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Objective: This study aims to review, identify and study the determinations of the main orthopedic aspects in SCI patients. Methods: A total of 80 articles from PUBMED and three theses (MSc. /DSc.) were examined. Results: The results refer to the most essential joints. There is a chronic overload on the shoulder girdle due to the use of the upper limb as a supporting joint. The elbow presents osteoarthritis, subclinical, acute and chronic pain, mainly in quadriplegic patients. In the hand and wrist joints there are cases of paralysis, osteoporosis and osteoarthritis. Hips are the main weight-bearing joints while sitting which leads to a substantial degenerative process of this joint. Lastly, on the knee, feet and ankles, spasticity, contractures, osteoporosis and deformities can arise. Conclusion: Along with the increase in cases and research that analyze the alterations that spinal cord-injured individuals suffer, it is necessary to recognize the orthopedic changes to understand their limits and identify the relevance of the rehabilitation program to improve the muscle performance. Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Objective: To assess existing original research addressing the efficiency of whole-body cooling modalities in the treatment of exertional hyperthermia. Data Sources: During April 2007, we searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Scopus, SportDiscus, CINAHL, and Cochrane Reviews databases as well as ProQuest for theses and dissertations to identify research studies evaluating whole-body cooling treatments without limits. Key words were cooling, cryotherapy, water immersion, cold-water immersion, ice-water immersion, icing, fanning, bath, baths, cooling modality, heat illness, heat illnesses, exertional heatstroke, exertional heat stroke, heat exhaustion, hyperthermia, hyperthermic, hyperpyrexia, exercise, exertion, running, football, military, runners, marathoner, physical activity, marathoning, soccer, and tennis. Data Synthesis: Two independent reviewers graded each study on the Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro) scale. Seven of 89 research articles met all inclusion criteria and a minimum score of 4 out of 10 on the PEDro scale. Conclusions: After an extensive and critical review of the available research on whole-body cooling for the treatment of exertional hyperthermia, we concluded that ice-water immersion provides the most efficient cooling. Further research comparing whole-body cooling modalities is needed to identify other acceptable means. When ice-water immersion is not possible, continual dousing with water combined with fanning the patient is an alternative method until more advanced cooling means can be used. Until future investigators identify other acceptable whole-body cooling modalities for exercise-induced hyperthermia, ice-water immersion and cold-water immersion are the methods proven to have the fastest cooling rates.

Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Objective: Our objective is to evaluate whether the use of guided growth with eight-plates is more effective than the use of Blount staples for the correction of the idiopathic genu varum or idiopathic genu valgum. Methods: A systematic review (SR) was carried out according to the appropriate methodology for randomized clinical trials (RCTs). We searched seven databases through a previously defined methodology, and we included RCTs, regardless of language, period of publication and status of publication. Results: Resulted in 6830 articles retrieved. Of theses, we identified 14 potential eligible studies. but just one RCT was included for the SR. The included RCT compares the eight-plate and the Blount staple and showed no statistically significant difference for the outcomes of time to correct the deformity, postoperative pain after 24 hours and postoperative pain after 72 hours. The study is of low or very low level of evidence to determine the most effective technique. We didn’t find a RCT that compared the correction of the genu varum. Conclusion: Good quality randomized clinical trials comparing Blount staples versus eight-plaque must be performed to determine which technique is superior for coronal plane corrections. Abstract (sommario):
ABSTRACT Movement is a fundamental element of dance, and the dancer’s body is the raw material through which the art of dance is expressed; for this, it demands the utmost discipline in the pursuit of technical and artistic excellence. To meet the professional demands, dancers are subjected to strenuous training routines, which can lead to the development of injuries in this environment. The objective was to examine the etiology, main affected segments, prevalence, and instruments used to evaluate the lesions in studies with professional dancers and/or in comparison with similar populations. We selected articles published in the last decade in the databases BIREME, LILACS, MEDLINE EBSCO, WEB OF SCIENCE, SCOPUS (Elsevier), and PubMed, with cross-sectional, observational cohort and case control design published in Portuguese, English, or Spanish. Systematic reviews, case studies, dissertations, theses, book chapters, cross-referenced articles, and studies published outside of the last decade were not included. The search used combinations of the terms “dancing* and athletic injuries* and musculoskeletal* and pain*”. A principal investigator and two reviewers conducted the survey and analyzed all the potentially relevant articles, initially by the abstract and title. Twelve articles were included, with 1,149 participants (965 professional dancers of classical ballet, modern dance, contemporary dance, and breakdance, 104 amateur dancers, and 80 elite athletes). Nine studies found simultaneous lesions with emphasis on the foot and ankle (n=4), upper and lower limbs lesions (n=4) and lower and upper limb joints (n=1). Other studies have found lesions in the anterior cruciate ligament (n=3). There was no agreement regarding the instruments for detecting lesions in professional, pre-professional, and amateur dancers. There was a prevalence of studies aimed at classical ballet modality, evidencing a higher frequency of lower limb involvement in professional dancers.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Objective: To determine whether concentric evertor muscle weakness was associated with functional ankle instability (FAI). Data Sources: We conducted an electronic search through November 2007, limited to English, and using PubMed, Pre-CINAHL, CINAHL, and SPORTDiscus. A forward search was conducted using the Science Citation Index on studies from the electronic search. Finally, we conducted a hand search of all selected studies and contacted the respective authors to identify additional studies. We included peer-reviewed manuscripts, dissertations, and theses. Study Selection: We evaluated the titles and abstracts of studies identified by the electronic searches. Studies were selected by consensus and reviewed only if they included participants with FAI or chronic ankle instability and strength outcomes. Studies were included in the analysis if means and SDs (or other relevant statistical information, such as P values or t values and group n's) were reported for FAI and stable groups (or ankles). Data Extraction: Data were extracted by the authors independently, cross-checked for accuracy, and limited to outcomes of concentric eversion strength. We rated each study for quality. Outcomes were coded as either fast or slow velocity (ie, equal to or greater than 110°/s or less than 110°/s, respectively). Data Synthesis: Data included the means, SDs, and group sample sizes (or other appropriate statistical information) for the FAI and uninjured groups (or ankles). The standard difference in the means (SDM) for each outcome was calculated using the pooled SD. We tested individual and overall SDMs using the Z statistic and comparisons between fast and slow velocities using the Q statistic. Our analysis revealed that ankles with FAI were weaker than stable ankles (SDM = 0.224, Z = 4.0, P < .001, 95% confidence interval = 0.115, 0.333). We found no difference between the fast- and slow-velocity SDMs (SDMFast = 0.189, SDMSlow = 0.244, Q = 29.9, df = 24, P = .187). Because of the small SDM, this method of measuring ankle strength in the clinical setting may need to be reevaluated.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Introduction: Terminal patients require proper care standards and professional team of doctors, physiotherapists, social workers, educators, psychologists and clergy directly involved in mitigating the suffering of a dying person. A physiotherapist as a member of such a team should be focused on sustaining the patient’s quality of life until the end at the level relevant to the patient’s health state. This quality of life should be perceived integrally as a combination of procedures reducing pain and physical suffering as well as improving physical fitness and mental well-being. Material and methods:The aim of the research was to define the role of physiotherapy in assessing mental and physical state of terminal patients; to determine the applicability of ADLs, GDS and BDI in diagnosing the validity and usefulness of tiresome physiotherapeutic procedures for terminal patients and to assess the applied tests in predicting terminal patients’ survival time. The research was carried out on the turn of 2012 and 2013 in the group of 103 subjects (74 females - 71.8% and 29 males - 28.2%) For the research the following methods were used: - Activity of Daily Living scale (ADL)- - Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) - Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) - Questionnaire regarding their willingness to participate in physiotherapeutic procedures. Results: In the research the range of diagnostic possibilities of the applied scales and tests, correlations between theses scales and tests as well as correlations between them and subjects’ age and survival time were assessed. Additionally, a questionnaire survey was carried out which assessed the willingness to participate in physiotherapeutic procedures. Strong stress, terminal state of the patient and generalisation of symptoms brought about the fact that only 14.6% of patients declared their willingness to participate in physiotherapeutic procedures. Conclusions: 1. Implementing physiotherapeutic and psychological diagnostic tests in everyday terminal care makes it easier to assess survival time of terminal patients and significantly improves their life and dying with dignity 2. Proper understanding of the symptoms of dying must serve as a basis for organising adequate activities compliant with the progress of a disease of a terminal patient without disturbing the process of dying. 3. Modern physiotherapy in terminal care should limit the range of physiotherapeutic procedures and physical therapy while increasing psychological care in this population.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Background and Purpose. Despite evidence that physical activity, a tool of rehabilitation, affects health and improves functional ability in people following spinal cord injury (SCI), such people are often physically inactive. We used a qualitative method to explore the experiences of individuals with SCI during participation in physical activity. Subjects. The participants were 8 adults (5 male, 3 female), ranging from active to inactive, who were 2 to 27 years post-rehabilitation following SCI (paraplegic). Methods. We used semistructured ethnographic interviews to explore barriers and enablers to participation in physical activity following SCI. Emerging themes were derived from the participants' experiences. Results. Two themes were identified: (1) individual influences, defined as a period of loss of “able identity” and subsequent redefinition of self in which participation in physical activity may be a vehicle or an outcome, and (2) societal influences, which included environmental and attitudinal barriers. Discussion and Conclusion. The participants' experiences offer insight for therapists regarding physical activity following SCI.

Abstract (sommario):
Background While a number of pharmacological interventions exist for the treatment of opioid use disorder, evidence evaluating the effect of pain on substance use behavior, attrition rate, and physical or mental health among these therapies has not been well established. We aim to evaluate these effects using evidence gathered from a systematic review of studies evaluating chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) in patients with opioid use disorder. Methods We searched the Medline, EMBASE, PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, ProQuest Dissertations and theses Database, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, World Health Organization International Clinical Trials Registry Platform Search Portal, and National Institutes for Health Clinical Trials Registry databases to identify articles evaluating the impact of pain on addiction treatment outcomes for patients maintained on opioid agonist therapy. Results Upon screening 3,540 articles, 14 studies with a combined sample of 3,128 patients fulfilled the review inclusion criteria. Results from the meta-analysis suggest that pain has no effect on illicit opioid consumption [pooled odds ratio (pOR): 0.70, 95%CI 0.41–1.17; I 2 = 0.0] but a protective effect for reducing illicit non-opioid substance use (pOR: 0.57, 95%CI 0.41–0.79; I 2 = 0.0). Studies evaluating illicit opioid consumption using other measures demonstrate pain to increase the risk for opioid abuse. Pain is significantly associated with the presence of psychiatric disorders (pOR: 2.18; 95%CI 1.6, 2.9; I 2 = 0.0%). Conclusion CNCP may increase risk for continued opioid abuse and poor psychiatric functioning. Qualitative synthesis of the findings suggests that major methodological differences in the design and measurement of pain and treatment response outcomes are likely impacting the effect estimates.

Abstract (sommario):
Introduction: Emergency physicians must achieve and maintain competence in numerous procedural skills, many of which are high stakes, time dependent, and used infrequently in clinical practice. Mental practice (MP) is the systematic use of mental imagery to see and feel an action in ones imagination without engaging in actual physical movement, and has been shown to enhance skill acquisition and performance in music and athletics. In this scoping review, we describe the utility and effectiveness of MP as a tool for procedural skill acquisition in medicine. Methods: An electronic search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, the Cochrane Library, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Open Grey, Conference Proceedings Index, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses and Google Scholar was conducted. Included studies evaluated MP for learning medically related technical skills using any method of mental training (script memorization, hypo-therapy, psychotherapy). Two independent reviewers screened articles for inclusion, and data was extracted using a standardized tool. Results: Our search returned 2028 results, of which 61 were eligible for inclusion. Forty-three studies evaluated MP interventions for technical skill development. Of these, 69.6% focused on minimally invasive surgical skills. The most common outcome measure was quantitative evaluation of skill via observer-scored checklist (69.6%). Other outcomes included stress, time to task completion, and haptic and movement data from surgical simulators. 82.6% of studies demonstrated a positive effect of MP on skill acquisition or performance. The quality of the trials was modest, and only 34.7% of published work provided clear detail on specific MP strategies. Conclusion: MP is an effective tool for procedural skills training. Areas outside of minimally invasive surgery are under-represented, and more data is needed on MP for rare or emergent procedures that typify emergency care. The minority of studies reviewed reported methods for developing and validating MP interventions in sufficient detail, a practice that should be adopted in future trials.

Abstract (sommario):
As a primary area of occupation, play is central to the lives of children. Emerging views of play reflect the complexity of the area, and focus on the relationship between the person and the environment during play. This paper reports the results of a qualitative study of twenty adolescents with and without physical disabilities. The participants were interviewed about their perceptions and personal experiences of play. Through a textual analysis of the data, significant themes related to the nature of play, environmental barriers and supports, and personal influences on play were identified. Clinical implications are discussed in relation to these themes.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Objectives The study aimed to identify and compare (1) what physical therapists perceive to be the main concerns, fears, and worries that patients with whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) and nontraumatic neck pain (NTNP) have as a result of their condition, and (2) the strategies used by physical therapists to address these fears and concerns. Methods Using convenience sampling, 30 physical therapists completed 2 online open-ended surveys. The responses were analyzed using 2 descriptive analytic methods (thematic analysis and constant comparative analysis), and then themes were examined for areas of convergence and divergence. Results Four similar themes for both neck pain groups were produced from our analysis of the survey responses: (1) interference with daily life, (2) concerns related to pain, (3) psychological distress, and (4) ``When I will recover?'' Subthemes differed between the groups. For example, the theme “psychological distress” had subthemes of anger and thoughts about no resolution for the WAD group, whereas for the NTNP group, subthemes were anxiety and uncertainty. The only divergent theme was (5) fear avoidance, present in the NTNP group only. Analysis of physical therapist strategies identified 3 consistent themes and 5 divergent themes across the 2 groups. Conclusions Physical therapists described a wealth of reassurance strategies for individuals with NTNP and WAD. There were several shared themes but also some discordant ones. Reassurance is multifactorial and needs to be nuanced and not prescriptive. Impact These qualitative findings may be key to inform the differentiated content of training programs for physical therapists delivering reassurance for these 2 populations.

Abstract (sommario):
Professional issues are experienced by physical and occupational therapists working in home health care. A grounded theory method was utilized with snowball sampling to interview 11 home health physical therapists and six occupational therapists working with a variety of populations in the home health setting. Major themes were identified separately for physical and occupational therapy using open, axial, and selective coding. The themes were then recoded for shared themes among the two professions. The major research questions included the following: What professional issues are encountered by therapists working in home health care? What type of benefits and barriers do therapists describe when providing home health services? Finally, how do professional issues compare between the different professions? The five major themes identified by physical therapists included work environment, work characteristics, communication, patient and family, and work-life balance. The themes identified by occupational therapists included the natural environment, the context of health care, client factors, and therapist factors. Common themes described by both physical and occupational therapy providers included the real-life environment of the home, the structure of home care, and autonomy of service provision. Results provide information about professional issues faced by therapists working in the home health care setting. There are a number of issues that are common to both professions, and others that appear to be discipline specific. These findings will guide professional efforts as the demands for professionals working in home care increase.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of this study was to explore how teachers and parents experience and reflect on participation and interaction with and between less active fifth-grade pupils in physically active academic lessons, in the school playground and during physical activity homework. This study formed part of the Active Smarter Kids study investigating the effects of daily physical activity on academic performance and health, and generated qualitative data from focus group interviews with teachers and parents. We identified three main themes: (1) aiming at and planning for interaction – a critical prerequisite for learning; (2) negotiating collaborative interaction during activities at school; and (3) facilitating physical activity at home through collaboration. The promotion of collaborative interaction appeared as a powerful means of facilitating learning in physically active academic lessons at school and at home for less active pupils.

Abstract (sommario):
The purpose of this study is to systematically review the socio-critical research on teaching physical education (PE) and PE teacher education (PETE) between 1999 and 2014. The procedure followed a four-phase approach: (a) searching publications through four international databases; (b) meeting inclusion criteria; (c) refining selection to identify specifically research-based papers; and (d) expert searching based on the research team’s knowledge. The selection process yielded 23 articles mainly from Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Spain. Most of the research was authored collaboratively by male and female authors affiliated to universities. A lack of authorship shared with participant students, teachers or student teachers was observed. Qualitative approaches were the predominant methodology used in the selected studies. An inductive content analysis identified five major themes: evaluations in secondary school; evaluations in higher education; provocative studies; studies on assessment; and studies on participants’ experiences and views. Teaching and curriculum problems and difficulties, new ways of approaching them and potential solutions to moral struggles in teaching were analysed within these themes. Most of the socio-critical research reviewed involved both a postmodern ontology and innovative research designs to investigate the new and complex world of PE and PETE. This review exhibits the reduced impact on social change and the difficulties in developing socio-critical research and enacting critical pedagogy. However, the findings of our study preserve the momentum of socio-critical research that fights to keep its place in the field of teaching PE and PETE.
