If the thing he prays for doesn’t happen, then that is one more proof that petitionary prayers don’t work; if it does happen, he will, of course, be able to see some of the physical causes which led up to it, and `therefore it would have happened anyway’, and thus a granted prayer becomes just as good a proof as a denied one that prayers are ineffective. -- CS Lewis, The Screwtape Letters

In this paper a partially loaded paraboloid of revolution is investigated by the theory of bent shallow shells. After establishing the sixth order linear system of equations it is concluded that the unknown coefficients cannot be expressed, cannot be given as practical formulas, thus useful approximate solutions are constructed for practical usage. The applicability limit of the column reaction approximated by concentrated load is investigated and the generated error of membrane action for this approximation is determined.

In this paper, we address the well-known cosmic coincidence problem in the framework of the f(G) gravity. In order to achieve this, an interaction between dark energy and dark matter is considered. A set-up is designed and a constraint equation is obtained, which generates the f(G) models that do not suffer from the coincidence problem. Due to the absence of a universally accepted interaction term introduced by a fundamental theory, the study is conducted over three different forms of logically chosen interaction terms. To illustrate the set-up three widely known models of f(G) gravity are tak

It has been shown that parity may be an exact unbroken symmetry of nature. This requires a doubling of the number of physical particles, although only two parameters beyond those in the Standard Model are introduced. We show that the Lagrangian describing parity conserving models can be reformulated in terms of a basis in which each term of the Lagrangian is parity invariant, although gauge invariance is not manifest. We then examine some further experimental signatures of parity conservation. We point out that, in the simplest case, there is one parity-even and one parity-odd physical neutral

We explore the cosmological model in which a late-time mild inflation (LMI) is realized after the star formation epoch. Nonvanishing curvature coupling of a classical boson field yields this mild inflation without a cosmological constant. Thus we show that the present observed high value of the Hubble parameter H0 ≈ 70–80 km/sec/Mpc is compatible with the age of the oldest stars 14 Gyr without introducing the cosmological constant or the dilute Universe model. The central point of dispute is that if there were only possible beings, each at some time would cease to exist and, therefore, at some point in time nothing would exist, and because something cannot come from nothing, in such an eventuality, nothing would exist now—a reductio ad absurdum conclusion. Therefore, at least one necessary being must exist. Generations of critics and defenders have contended over S

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractThe finite element method (FEM) is a popular tool for solving engineering problems governed by Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). The accuracy of the numerical solution depends on the quality of the computational mesh. We consider the self-adaptive hp-FEM, which generates optimal mesh refinements and delivers exponential convergence of the numerical error with respect to the mesh size. Thus, it enables solving difficult engineering problems with the highest possible numerical accuracy. We replace the computationally expensive kernel of the refinement algorithm with a deep neural network in this work. The network learns how to optimally refine the elements and modify the orders of the polynomials. In this way, the deterministic algorithm is replaced by a neural network that selects similar quality refinements in a fraction of the time needed by the original algorithm.

AbstractGlobal Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) have achieved great success in providing localization information in outdoor open areas. However, due to the weakness of the signal, GNSS signals cannot be received well indoors. Currently, indoor positioning plays a significant role in many areas, such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI), but given the complexity of indoor spaces and topology, it is still challenging to achieve an accurate, effective, full coverage and real-time positioning solution indoors. With the development of information technology, the smartphone has become more and more popular. With a large number of sensors embedded in smartphones, it is thus possible to achieve low cost, continuity, and high usability for indoor positioning. In this chapter, we focus on indoor positioning technologies with smartphones, and in particular, emphasize the technologies based on radio frequency (RF) and built-in sensors. The pros and cons of the technologies are reviewed and discussed in the context of different applications. Moreover, the challenges of indoor positioning are pointed out and the directions for the future development of this area are discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractSentenza 238/2014 has led to a sharp dissonance between the international law of state immunity as interpreted by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and Italian constitutional law as understood and applied by the Corte Costituzionale. While the interpretation and application by the Italian Constitutional Court (ItCC) of the access-to-courts provision in the Italian Constitution may not have been inevitable, this does not remove the need for finding a solution to the stalemate between international and domestic law. On the one hand, the easy solution, namely that the rejection of German state immunity from jurisdiction does not necessarily remove immunity from execution into German property, appears unlikely to be accepted by the ItCC because it would give stones rather than bread to the complainants and render court access a futile exercise. On the other hand, bringing Sentenza to its logical conclusion would result in Italy having to return to Germany what Italian courts took from her by requiring compensation—either by way of the general international law of restitutio in integrum, which the Corte Costituzionale has neither contemplated nor contradicted, or by way of the 1961 Treaty between Germany and Italy in which Italy promises to indemnify Germany against any further claims. Thus, a compromise would have to distinguish between full access to the Italian courts notwithstanding international immunity—as required by the ItCC—and substantive law, which could accept a more symbolical recognition of the suffering of the victims. That recognition could stem from a direct source other than the two states involved, such as a common fund, and address only the small group of immediate victims who were unjustly, if arguably legally, excluded from the previous compensation scheme of the 1960s. It is by no means certain, however, whether such an outcome would be acceptable to all sides—including the Corte itself. Thus, legal certainty would have to be established as quickly as possible so that the victims can still receive at least symbolic compensation.

Abstract (sommario):
AbstractTraditional aquaponics systems were arranged in a single process loop that directs nutrient-rich water from fish to the plants and back. Given the differing specific nutrient and environmental requirements of plants and fish, such systems presented a compromise to the ideal conditions for rearing of both, thus reducing the efficiency and productivity of such coupled systems. More recently, designs that allow for decoupling of units provide for a more finely tuned regulation of the process water in each of the respective units while also allowing for better recycling of nutrients from sludge. Suspended solids from the fish (e.g. faeces and uneaten feed) need to be removed from the process water before water can be directed to plants in order to prevent clogging of hydroponic systems, a step that represents a significant loss of total nutrients, most importantly phosphorus. The reuse of sludge and mobilization of nutrients contained within that sludge present a number of engineering challenges that, if addressed creatively, can dramatically increase the efficiency and sustainability of aquaponics systems. One solution is to separate, or when there are pathogens or production problems, to isolate components of the system, thus maximizing overall control and efficiency of each component, while reducing compromises between the conditions and species-specific requirements of each subsystem. Another potential innovation that is made possible by the decoupling of units involves introducing additional loops wherein bioreactors can be used to treat sludge. An additional distillation loop can ensure increased nutrient concentrations to the hydroponics unit while, at the same time, reducing adverse effects on fish health from high nutrient levels in the RAS unit. Several studies have documented the aerobic and anaerobic digestion performance of bioreactors for treating sludge, but the benefits of the digestate on plant growth are not well-researched. Both remineralization and distillation components consequently have a high unexplored potential to improve decoupled aquaponics systems.

Abstract (sommario):
This work covers the research work on decentralization of Online Social Networks (OSNs), issues with centralized design are studied with possible decentralized solutions. Centralized architecture is prone to privacy breach, p2p architecture for data and thus authority decentralization with encryption seems a possible solution. OSNs' users grow exponentially causing scalability issue, a natural solution is decentralization where users bring resources with them via personal machines or paid services. Also centralized services are not available unremittingly, to this end decentralization proposes replication. Decentralized solutions are also proposed for reliability issues arising in centralized systems and the potential threat of a central authority. Yet key to all problems isn't found, metadata may be enough for inferences about data and network traffic flow can lead to information on users' relationships. First issue can be mitigated by data padding or splitting in uniform blocks. Caching, dummy traffic or routing through a mix of nodes can be some possible solutions to the second.

Abstract (sommario):
Chemotaxis is the biased movement developed by certain living organisms as a response to chemical gradients present in their environment. Thanks to advances in the computing field, bacterial chemotactical strategies and its excellent ability in searching can be modeled, simulated and emulated, thus developing bio-inspired optimization methods alternatively to classical methods. In this work, a multi objective optimization algorithm based on bacterial chemotaxis is proposed and applied to the shape optimization of shafts. Design variables are the diameters along shaft’s length and different con

Abstract (sommario):
A numerical study is made on the fully-developed bifurcation structure and stability of the forced convection in a curved microchannel of square cross-section. Two symmetric and four asymmetric solution branches are found. Thus a rich solution structure is found with up to eleven solutions over certain ranges of governing parameters. This multiplicity is at least partially responsible for the large differences in the reported friction factors and heat transfer coefficients in the literature. Dynamic responses of the multiple solutions to finite random disturbances are examined by the direct tr

Abstract (sommario):
With the demand for increased availability and a higher level of safety, the defence industry is faced with reducing operational and maintenance budgets. Additional focus on acquisition programmes is being placed on through-life requirements, with demonstration and assurances sought early in the life cycle that these requirements can be achieved. Generic approaches to availability, cost and safety modelling are being re-examined, with a push to provide a universal view across both the submarine life-cycle and the support enterprise. The role of a support solution is to ensure continuous unders

Abstract (sommario):
This paper presents a methodology to control flange to flange performance prediction of centrifugal compressors using a probabilistic approach. In order to have reliable prediction for the performance of centrifugal compressors, a thorough knowledge of critical parameters contributing to the deviation and an efficient way to control the variation of these parameters becomes necessary. This paper discusses about a robust methodology for identifying and controlling the variation of these parameters and hence the predicted performance. This probabilistic technique involves a Design of Experiments

Abstract (sommario):
In this work, we propose a framework to train a robot in a virtual environment using Reinforcement Learning (RL) techniques and thus facilitating the use of this type of approach in robotics. With our integrated solution for virtual training, it is possible to programmatically change the environment parameters, making it easy to implement domain randomization techniques on-the-fly. We conducted experiments with a TurtleBot 2i in an indoor navigation task with static obstacle avoidance using an RL algorithm called Proximal Policy Optimization (PPO). Our results show that even though the trainin
