Testo completoSince 1950’s, local organisations undertake to promote the French “Basque country” as a touristic destination. Their brochures contribute to the Basque Country representation. This touristic image is criticized by a part of the population which judges it stereotyped and presenting a backward-looking and unchanging vision of the Basque culture, far from representing its contemporary reality. This thesis proposes to analyze what is this touristic image, via the motives it uses, to show that beyond that critique there are in fact two conceptions of the Basque culture, working inside the Basque society, which are opposed to each other

Testo completoAlthough she has kept, by tradition, a comparative equality of rights within the structure of the "etexe" (home), the rural basque woman, in her masked plurality and dialectic, has hardly ever been treated by researchers as a principal theme. Paradoxically irreplaceable and belittled, ignored in her motherhood, divided between her traditional values and those of the surrounding domineering world, she is now searching for her new identity. History, access to a career and to knowledge, the rupture of the family unit, come to gradually define a new space for the woman as a wife, as a sexual being, as a mother. Old fashioned mentalities but also assimilation, isolation and loss of her cultural identity are still obstacles. But they are being overcome thanks to an astonishing reconciliation with the past, sometimes through nationalistic claims and often through day-to-day involvement in favour of an inherited but modernised culture

Testo completoTraditionally regarded as an area little marked by the conquest and the Roman domination, the western of the Pyrenees delivered a lot of vestiges of ancient metalliferous exploitations (gold, copper, plumb, silver and iron). In such an archaeological context, the question was to evaluate the importance of the ancient mining and metallurgical activity in the Basque Country, but also to measure the effects of the romanisation on this industrial economic branch. Overall, it was necessary to define the role of mining industry in the process of integration and romanisation of the south-Aquitanian territories. This analysis was carried out by the means of a diachronic approach of the Basque Country mining history. Within a pluri-millenium mining and metallurgical hearth, the ancient iron production, obviously important and paradoxically ignored, was in need of a particular lighting. A significant part of the research is thus devoted to the original study of three ancient iron production districts discovered in the Nive and Aldudes valleys

Testo completoThe triumph of small farming units during the 19th century is an apparent paradox that raises the question of how they could survive. Farming, livestock production and pluriactivity, including temporary migrations, were so closely combined in such farming units that it is difficult to distinguish between the farm and household economies. Farming production was somewhat protected from market fluctuations by autoconsumption and nearly exclusive use of family labour. Far from living in autarky, however, the farms were involved in a complex system of exchanges and were quite active on livestock market. The reason why they were still viable, though showing deficit and debts, probably lies in their ability to provide the family with a sufficient welfare level for subsisting and maintaining its rank. They obeyed the logic of a household-oriented economy, aimed at the reproduction of the household group and the transmission of family assets, which allowed the staying in the country of a strong rural community

Testo completoWhat kind of process brings an individual, in the French Basque Country, to become involved in a group of activists and to claim a position on “Basque identity”, different from that of other groups? To study the influence of socio-cultural trajectories and institutional memberships on individuals’ worldviews, the dissertation focuses on Nationalist actors and their “field of commitment” which is structured by various militant organisations (cultural, political, economical, unionist). Combining biographical interviews, documentary analysis and participant observation, the dissertation wishes to depart from approaches of nationalism that are confined to the sole analysis of ideology. It draws upon theories of collective action that take into consideration the processual dimension of activist engagement and its “organisational shapings”. After examining the struggles between nationalists and non-nationalists and between nationalists themselves for the appropriation and the definition of a “Basque” space, the universes of socialisation that have brought individuals to an involvement in the “Basque cause” are described. Then, the dissertation proceeds to explicate the norms that help maintain the commitment of nationalist activists by means of organisational systems and rituals. Their study unsettles notions of the criteria generally associated with belonging to the “Basque” group

Testo completoThe interwar years in France witnessed a revival of sacred Art. After the 1905 law on the separation of Church and State, the Church had to reorganize and renew its spiritual message and reposition its action in the context of a changing society. The creation of religious art workshops as well as the launching of the Parisian “Chantiers du Cardinal”, initiated by cardinal Verdier, supported by a number of reviews such as L’Art Sacré, gave a new impulse to the production of religious art. The diocese of Bayonne took a full part in this initiative. It was keen to contribute in original and dynamic ways to this new direction and tried to include regional elements and in particular features reflecting Basque and Bearnais identities. The joint work done by bishops and priests involved in building churches, architects, glassmakers and mosaic artists, painters, sculptors and even goldsmiths, shows how well-established and even conventional designs were revisited to produce an art which hesitated between daring innovation and compromise. Indeed, the sacred art of the diocese of Bayonne was marked by a mixture of tradition and renewal, regionalism and modernity

Testo completoThe complexity of the Basque issue quickly becomes apparent to the eyes of the researcher eager to understand it : the Pyrenean mountains, which divide the Basque Country into two politically distinct territories, don't constitute a purely arbitrary border, the fruit of the quirks of History. . . At the dawn of the third millennium, camped out on their respective side, the two communities observe each other, without always understanding each other, although there tend to be more and more examples of cross-border cooperation nowadays within the context of the developing European Union. The Basque people are a race, i. E. A human type defined by lasting characteristics which are passed down from generation to generation. The origin of their sense of identity, at last at its very beginning, is rooted in a heightened awareness of the inherent differences within the ethnic group. This feeling translates itself into a strong desire to keep their basic characteristics faced with any vague attempts of external domination. Yet, the Northern Basque people seem to be better integrated into the heart of the French Nation in spite of the regular disagreements with Paris particularly because of economic difficulties in the region. On the other hand, their Southern brothers in their overwhelming majority have rejected the supervision imposed by Spain, even turning to armed conflict against any symbol of "occupation" of Euzkadi by Madrid. How is it possible to explain so contrasted realities within a single nation ? Political History certainly but also Geography, both physical and human, Economy, Culture and Religion allow to outline an answer. .

Testo completoThe Basque opera (1884-1933) presents the appearance of an autochthonous lyrical theatre in the Basque country, which joins the widespread European movement concerning national operas. Born within the fantasy of the San Sebastian carnival, it establishes itself and acquires its national character during the first decade of the present century. It then blossoms in Bilbao, thanks to its dynamic choral society. After creating a great legendary epic, it gives way to choreographic and choral performances or to the recuperation of Basque folklore. The Basque opera appears as linked to the development of nationalism. It is one of the most interesting signs that accompanies it in the revival of the Basque culture. The themes most commonly mentioned in regard to identity claim are offered in a libretto written in Basque language : the genuine Basque is exalted as the heir of a millenary culture, living in a mountainous, rural or maritime environment; it is said to be faithful to traditional institutions and to religion, and fond of freedom. Regarding music, this very assertion of the Basque identity is also to be found, based on the use of voice and traditional instruments along with folklore as the foundation of musical discourse

Testo completoThis thesis is a contribution to the anthropological research on individuality in traditional societies. My approach focuses on the person’s cultural notion. The study is based on the analysis of matrimonial trials and of personal letters of this time. In a context where marriage is a fundamental institution from the point of view of social reproduction, these documents bring us over the attitudes of some individual whose spouse’s choice is contrary to family marriage strategies

Testo completoThere are practices common to a number of social groups which make motherhood an excessively codified event. Ln contemporary societies, these codes are primarily medical. Our study set out to decypher these codes as found in young farmer`s wives in the Béarn and Basque Country {Pyrenée Atlantiques, France). This led us to study in detail the "famille souche" (families in which one single child inherits the common inheritance and in return cohabits with the parental couple), a system of reference which is still adopted in the majority of cases in the areas studied (despite the Revolution which stipulated equal rights for all). This family system is based on several generations living together. We examined the mechanisms which define the way it functions (history, workplace relationships, respective social roles of individuals etc. ), and then we studied how young women within the group experienced motherhood, hearing in mind that the predominant social framework confronted them with a variety of family models likely to create tension ("souche" family/nuclear familyi. Two main elements emerge from this study: 1)Within the group, men occupy a fixed position outside the house (the pillar of the "famille souche"), whereas women follow a cycle ; at first their time is divided between inside and outside the house, and then when the first grandchild arrives their lives are exclusively devoted to domestic affairs inside the house. So it is only as grandmothers that they are free to give their time to the children. 2) The experience of motherhood reveals conflicts and seems to be the only element important enough to cause break-ups in the traditional system of cohabitation. Young women are therefore the decisive element in the transmission of family values and are the main actors involved in potential changes

Testo completoThe map of departements, drawn up at the time of the french revolution, has remained almost untouched. The plan for dividing the departement of pyreneesatlantiques (on one side, the pays basque and on the other, bearn) is quite singular. The pays basque's claim cannot be reduced to its identity determinant ; it also expresses the convergence of different groups whose only real common denominator is that they belong to the civil society and face the hostility of the local notables and, until 1981, that of the central authorities. These then appeared to want to take into account the desire for change and to make it a symbol of their new administrative and cultural orientation. They were nevertheless ready to give up the projet, thereby emphasizing, in addition to the implications of the spanish basque question, the solidarity linking the center and the periphery. The failure of the pro-departement current is connected with the difficulties of comptability, in a unitary state, between the national community and a local administrative space which covers exactly an ethniccultural space

Testo completoThis thesis aims to use the boundary object according to a socio-historical approach through the prism of identity customs in physical traditional cultures in Basque Country as part of the french space since the end of the XIXth century. It consist in giving an overview of social functions of Basque musical and dancing heritage, Basque pelota, traditional dances and strengh games, through the antagonistic duo at work “ affiliation/distinction ” carried by the Basque themselves, and represent a practical and symbolic boundary. In an approach both inductive and deductive, the boundary becomes historically and sociologically relevent by being apprehended in its uniqueness, but links broad questions of recognition, memory and cultural rallying that engage all community identities in contemporary societies. Défined by its movement in three enunciation categories, the territory, collective representations and socius, the boundary object offers a setting accurate enough to establish a method allowing the dialogue between the “real” and an epistemological reflection. Thereby, this theme main’s interest is the identity positioning of a regional community subject to homogenisation and acculturation phenomenon due to a political modernity and a stronger cultural globalization, accentuated and diversified since the end of the XIXth century. At the scale of the Basque nation or the regional one, it's through the ability of individuals to act locally that our question is located. Consequently, the Weberian approach allows us to define the boundary through the individual actions in their own collective context while aiming to grasp their significations and interactions. The Basque country field of study confirm the theory of a boundary as a psychosocial and sharing process taking shape in customs of material culture. It confirms the structuring of its externality and internality as well as the effectiveness of its elements, analysed amongs the memorial dynamics and process of endo and exocategorisation of the Basque ethnocultural specificity. The diversity of physical cultures apprehended by multi-sited studies, the resort of written archives and direct interviews allows us to comprehend their part as markers and indicators of the material and psychological mark of boundary. Finally, putting in perspective by a interdisciplinary synthesis of the use of these customs in a federal and community context prove the reconfiguration of the boundary and reveal its full dynamic as a composit process, historically situated. It is part of a contribution to a sociocultural history and contemporary identity matters and ethnical and cultural hybridization phenomenon

Testo completoFrench emigration is generally studied as a compact unit. The regional differences are not pointed out, even if the French regions had a different behavior towards emigration throughout history. Anyway, it was possible to determine some principal common trends for the contemporary attitude. The work of the emigration agents is underlined in this will to go. The attitude of the emigrants in the new world show that they concentrated in the urban centers and tried to make revive some of the old world spirit. But this try doesn't seem to have been achieved, and the process of assimilation is on, whatever may be the region of origin or the efforts of the community

Testo completoIn French Basque Country, the number of Basque speakers keeps decreasing. Yet, the last socio-linguistic surveys show that the number of speakers increases among the youngest generations. Such a growth is partly related to the growing enrolment of children in schools in Basque. Between the school years 2004 and 2016, the three main branches of schooling in Basque (the public one, the private one, and the immersive one in ikastola) show a dramatic increase of 68% of the number of pupils in French Basque Country, whereas the total number of pupils increases by 6% only. While globalisation strengthens international languages, the growing popularity for placing young children in schools in Basque in order to acquire a regional language is challenging. Thanks to a sociological intervention (which consisted in bringing together 5 groups of about 10 parents, and meeting them 5 times each, for 2 hours) we co-analysed the practices of parents who decided to place their children in schools in Basque. This way, we defined the social meaning of their choice, which, at first, could appear obvious and personal to them. The parents involved in the sociological intervention want to take part in the transmission of an identity-sensitive language. They want to take advantage of an exposure to a bilingual learning from an early age. But they also show a sort of activism by assuming universal principals (such as equality between languages, respect for cultures, preservation of the world’s heritage, etc.). Finally, the will to take an active part in a new social project can also be considered as a driver of the desire to place their children in schools in Basque. It appears that the choice to place children in schools in Basque is never driven by a single reason only. The motivation stems from a sociological experience that articulates the different logics previously mentioned. Here, we look for identifying and analysing the diversity of the reasons the parents give, and understanding the system that relates those reasons in a same social experience

Testo completoThis study comes within the scope of a recent historiographical trend to change perception of the industrialisation of the South-West of France which is often approached from the perspective of underdevelopment . It aims at reconstructing the « paths » of different textile industries in the Basses-Pyrénées / Pyrénées-Atlantiques from late 18th century to late 20th century, based on the study of produce, markets, producting organisations, firms, views and representations. The research points out the importance, structuring and the diversity of textile industries : complete industrial processes can be found in Basses-Pyrénées for several fibres (cotton, linen, wool, jute) and some products are produced and sold by millions (berets, sandals and, to a leaser extent, basque linen, wool of the Pyrénées...). The maintain of “soft” producting organisations, the massive use of hydraulic power and the domination of family businesses are also linked with fast technical changes and strong ability of industrial reconversion inside various industrial countries and small or middle-sized towns. In the end, these industrial “paths” reveal the economical integration of Basses-Pyrénées on different scales, from local to international, as regards raw material, markets or technical, or financial and human movements. The exploitation of regional opportunities plays a major role in the continuity of these textile industries : proximity of Spain, continuing consumption in the pyrenean area, emigration to America, tourism, regionalistic vogue for Bearn, Basque Country and Pyrénées

Thesis, Pau, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020PAUU3003.
Testo completoAlong the French Basque coast, soft-bottom communities are poorly described. Indeed, except for the monitoring program of water bodies carried out through the WFD and some isolated impact studies, benthic systems appear weakly investigated. However, macrobenthos are known to be an effective indicator to establish the ecological quality of coastal and estuarine waters. Due to their sedentary nature, benthic macrofauna integrates effects of environmental variations and provides a relatively clear signal, susceptible to detect a disturbance on the ecosystem. Nonetheless, to assess disturbance ecological impact, it is necessary to discriminate natural variability (intrinsic to the environment) from that related to anthropogenic activities. The main issue of this PhD is to investigate the hydrodynamic conditions effects on the structure, the distribution and the dynamic of the soft-bottom communities of the French Basque coast. Behind this academic objective, this study conducted in a private company also supported a deep operationality need in improving local knowledges.A substantial sampling effort was carried out during this study. Four biosedimentary field campaigns (one per season) were replicated for two years in the vicinity of the three main French Basque country estuaries, supplemented by another year of investigations at the Adour river mouth. In order to assess the influence of abiotic factors, the hydrodynamic conditions were simulated using the operational models developed in the framework of the European project LOREA.The results show a predominant influence of hydrodynamic conditions (wave and river inputs) controlling local sediment dynamics and thus the structure and distribution of benthic soft-bottom nearshore communities. In terms of temporal variation, a relative stability has been observed suggesting an ecological resilience from natural disturbances. The analysis of the biosedimentary data from the area located in the vicinity of the Adour river mouth in relation to river flow, wave climate and dredge spoil disposal activities of the Bayonne harbour corroborate these observations. Indeed, despite the fact that a dumping impact can be noticed within this high naturally exposed environment, dredged materials are rapidly dispersed and the macrofauna recovers quickly. Finally, through the study of the macrobenthic communities, the non-native amphipod Grandidierella japonica Stephensen, 1938 of the family Aoridae has been reported for the first time in the southern part of the Bay of Biscay, along the French Basque Country. The preliminary study of this species local installation and the estuarine impacted ecological niches still requires improvement. Complementary biological and environmental data are needed to improve and confirm the obtained results

Testo completoThe main objective of this thesis is to know how the textual genre of the oral presentation in Basque works. This explanation will be based on empiric data: a texts' corpus produced by bilingual (French-Basque speakers) students from the Basque Studies' Department, teachers-to-become. Thus, this study shows the benefits and the lacks encountered in the productions which can be defined as a sub-gender of the oral presentation exercise: the report of a critical reading concerning a piece of literature which is a common practise in the educational institution. This analysis relies on the internal texts' structure (Bronckart, 1996) which considers several aspects of the speech: to analyse the communication situation, the textual planification and the thematic contents, the cohesion and connexion elements and how the enonciation are taken over. This study will end up on a suggestion of didactic solutions and more precisely a didactic sequence (Dolz and Schneuwly, 1998), where the obtained results will enable to improve the oral presentation as a textual genre. Some working groups can make the textual organisation tools, time articulations, modalisation skills or oral interlucations be developed

Testo completoAt the heart of the fields of Itxassou in the Basque country and Sefrou in Morocco, a new methodology to collect materials has been applied in order to study and compare the heritagization processes working in around cherries and the related events like cherry festivals. This new anthropological approach has been developed using the concept of transitional area due to the English psychoanalyst Donald D. Woods Winnicott, which is a fundamental concept of occupational therapy. Creativity and playing are at the core of this approach that we call clinical and transitional ethnography. It has been tested among children and adults and has allowed us to significantly improve the number of objects obtained during the field data collection. The transitional theory of Winnicott leaded us to distinguish and define different form of heritage : the object, the personal heritage, the collective heritage, the heritage and finally the total heritage. In the wake of the American anthropologist Gregory Bateson, the transitional theory together with systems theory allow us to define a systemic heritage scheme. Creativity is both the energy of the transitional sub-scheme and those of the systemic heritage scheme. We have also studied the main obstructions to the heritagization process, the so-called double bind, using previous works of four multidisciplinary researchers : Winnicott, Simmel, Bateson and Watzlawick. In particular, three double bind are defined and their exceeding strategies coming from the fields under investigation are analyzed. Although the outcomes of the double bind depends on each system, similarities can be found in the mandatory use of creativity
Delpech, Viviane. "Le château d'Abbadia à Hendaye : le monument idéal d'Antoine d'Abbadie". Thesis, Pau, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012PAUU1007/document.
Testo completoWhen he came back from his travel in Ethiopia, the bask-irish scientist explorer, Antoine d’Abbadie, appealed in the architect Eugène-E. Viollet-le-Duc in 1864 in order to build his castle. Notre-Dame de Paris’ restaurator and his associate, Edmond Duthoit, in charge of the construction site and decoration, proponed an original and delirious work, rare from its stylistic homogeneity and in the image of its owner’s and his wife’s eclectic tastes. As for the château d’Abbadia’s building, they drew in several inspirations which associated Middle Ages, science, religion, Orient and Ethiopia, which therefore composed a true artistic interbreeding. This thesis consists in studying these influences’ modes of expression, and besides, it tries to explore the motivations and the meanings of such a mixity on historical and social viewpoint. At last, the massive archives permitted to highlight the important web of the actors, in particular well-known craftsmen and artists, who participated to Abbadia’s building. So the study of this singular home is built around its owner’s assertive personalities while setting the castle in 19th century’s history of art and architecture
