Abstract (sommario):
Twenty-four hourly urinary growth hormone excretion (24-h uGH) has been quantified using a combination of ultrafiltration and conventional immunoradiometric assay. Twenty-four hourly uGH was measured in 20 normal adults and in 42 patients with acromegaly (9 untreated, 28 treated but with above-normal IGF-I levels, and 5 treated and cured). The means and ranges were as follows: 3.7 (1–9) ng/24 h for normals and 160(40–540), 66(2–380) and 5.2 (4–8) ng/24 h for the three groups of acromegalic patients, respectively. Ten patients with pituitary adenomas without acromegaly had 24-h uGH within the normal range. Twenty-four hourly uGH therefore gives a clear differentiation between controls and untreated patients. Log-transformed values for subjects with acromegaly showed significant correlations between 24-h uGH and levels of IGF-I (r=0.63, p<0.01), fasting plasma GH (r=0.92, p<0.001) and plasma GH after glucose loading (r=0.85, p<0.001). Twenty-four hourly uGH was also determined in three acromegalic patients before and during SMS 201–995 therapy. Twenty-four hourly uGH reflected the corresponding changes in mean levels for hourly sampling over 12 h of plasma GH and IGF-I and in clinical signs after 3–6 months of therapy. The results of this study indicate that 24-h uGH is an accurate indicator of GH secretion in acromegalic patients and could therefore be used both in diagnosis and in monitoring the progress of therapy in these patients.

Abstract (sommario):
The aim of the study was to evaluate the chemical, physical and nutritional composition and sensory acceptability of different sweet potato cultivars to classify the best genotypes for human consumption. We evaluated ten genotypes extracted from the Germplasm bank of Midwest State University, Brazil. The cultivars were evaluated regarding their sensory acceptability and chemical (reducing sugar; nonreducing sugar; total sugar; pH; total soluble solids; titratable acidity; total soluble solids/titratable acidity ratio; and instrumental colour) and nutritional composition (moisture; ash; protein; lipid; carbohydrate; energy value; total carotenoid; and ascorbic acid). Greater scores (p < 0.05) for overall acceptance were obtained for the white pulp genotypes Amorano, Júlia, UGA 45, and UGA 49. There was a statistical difference (p < 0.05) in the chemical and nutritional composition of sweet potatoes, except for the pH values. Generally, tuber have a light colour (values of L* greater than 50) with a yellow shade (b*) and green subshade (negative a* values). The exception was noticed in the UGA 34 genotype, which presented a higher red shade (positive a* value) and a yellow subshade. The cultivars more indicated for human consumption were the UGA 34 (favorable nutritional profile), UGA 45 (better acceptability and favorable chemical and nutritional composition), and Amorano (better acceptability and favorable chemical composition). On the other hand, the UGA 29 genotype may be characterized as the less appropriated for consumption. That, due to its less acceptance from the consumers and an inferior chemical and nutritional characterization. We conclude that the Brazilian sweet potato cultivars more indicated for human consumption are the UGA 34, UGA 45 and Amorano, considering that present more favorable chemical, nutritional and sensory acceptability characteristics. The UGA 29 genotype may be characterized as less recommended for consumption.

Abstract (sommario):
Complete emergency measures are one of the important guarantees for effective emergency response. An evaluation method based on User-Generated Content (UGC) data is proposed to assess the completeness of emergency measures. To implement this method, UGC data comprising emergency needs from the users and emergency plans comprising emergency measures for specific emergency were firstly collected using a crawler program. A feature template was then established to identify relationships between different features, and a Conditional Random Field (CRF) model was used to extract emergency measures from the emergency plan and emergency needs from UGC data. The Siamese network was applied thereafter to compute the similarity between the emergency measures and emergency needs. The missing emergency measures were obtained based on the similarities, and a quantitative method to calculate the completeness was defined. Finally, using province A as a case study, the emergency measure completeness was evaluated and the emergency measures that need to be strengthened and improved were identified.

Abstract (sommario):
The presence of user generated content (UGC) on online platforms of hotel room booking operators is changing the way consumers book a hotel room. After a critical evaluation of the technology acceptance models (TAM), the authors discuss the variables that will be employed to predict the effective use of online hotel room bookings by Portuguese travellers. The empirical investigation consists of a linear regression model that was built in order to analyse the data obtained from an online survey of 624 customers of the website Booking.com. The results showed that attitude towards UGC and the perceived ease to use of UGC are important determinants on the buyer's decision-making process of booking a hotel room. This result shows the relevance of UGC (ratings and reviews) for online booking operators, as UGC could influence the booking of a particular hotel room. Further, the result also brings important implications for hotel managers that pay less attention to the feedback of the customers.

Abstract (sommario):
The impact of an urban growth boundary (UGB) on land development in Knox County, TN is estimated via two-stage probit and neural-network models. The insignificance of UGB variable in the two-stage probit model and more visible development patterns in the western part of Knoxville and the neighboring town of Farragut during the post-UGB period in both models suggest that the UGB has not curtailed urban sprawl. Although the network model is found to be a viable alternative to more conventional discrete choice approach for improving the predictability of land development, it is at the cost of evaluating marginal effects.

Abstract (sommario):
PurposeThis paper employs new methods to evaluate the availability of multistate series–parallel systems, in which a number of similar components are available in each subsystem.Design/methodology/approachIn this paper, polynomial distribution function (PDF) is combined with universal generating function (UGF) and recursive algorithm (RA) methods to evaluate the availability of multistate series–parallel systems. To achieve this goal, the PDF is initially used to determine the performance rates and the probabilities corresponding to the performance states of the similar components in a subsystem. The obtained results are used to evaluate the system availability via the UGF and RA methods.FindingsIt is shown that the combined UGF and PDF (UGF-PDF) and also the combined RA and PDF (RA-PDF) methods require less computational time than did the UGF and RA methods, respectively.Originality/valueIn the UGF and RA methods, there is no difference in system availability evaluation time when considering similar or different components in each subsystem. But the proposed methods in this article do not have this restrictions; therefore, these methods can be used to evaluate system availability in optimal redundancy allocation problems. As a result, using these methods reduces the optimization time of those problems.

Mooney, David G. "An evaluation of small scale open cast mining of UG2 in the Bushveld complex". Thesis, Rhodes University, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1005555.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The current weak state of the platinum market, as well as the large inventory of platinum group metals held by Russia, necessitates that the South African platinum mining industry must carefully evaluate the benefits and disadvantage of small-scale mining of shallow, open castable ore resources. Until the late 1980's, these resources were ignored due to the metallurgical complexities of treating oxidized ore, as well as the mind set that existed within the South African mining industry which militated against open cast mining in the Bushveld. During the latter part of the 1980's and early 1990's, advances in the metallurgical treatment of oxidized ore, specifically the UG2, as well as operational problems, created the impetus to begin the exploitation of these resources. Small-scale open cast mining has become viable due to the development of suitable mining methods that facilitate mining practices acceptable to the Department of Mineral and Energy Affairs, in terms of environmental legislation. Metallurgical advances and growing experience, especially with respect to the UG2, enables reasonable platinum group metals recovery from oxidized ore. The problems experienced in doing this can, and are being overcome. With growing public awareness of environmental issues, particularly related to the mining industry, the requirement to ensure that the small-scale open cast mine site is well managed is paramount. A methodology for the evaluation is presented along with a case study of a small-scale UG2 open cast pit. Evidence is presented that shows that these small-scale open cast mining operations are extremely profitable and require minimal capital expenditure. However, caution is advised when evaluating Merensky Reef open cast operations because of the problems that they present.

Abstract (sommario):
In the field of lighting technology, glare evaluation is one of the basic parameters of determining the quality of lighting systems. Disturbing glare is most often evaluated by UGR in internal systems. The UGR method is well described and verified for uniform glare sources. With the development of LED, non-uniform sources of glare become involved in the lighting system. Thus verification of UGR suitability for non-uniform sources is necessary and possibly modification of the method or replacement it by another more appropriate method is required. This diploma thesis focuses on evaluation methods of disturbing glare from luminaires with non-uniform radiation surface. For this purpose, the thesis includes glare analysis, methods of glare calculation and glare evaluation. Furthermore, the UGR analysis and modification for the calculation of disturbing glare from non-uniform glare sources are included. The practical part is concentrated on measurement of glare from uniform and non-uniform glare sources. For the purpose of evaluating the suitability of the measurement method, the subjective evaluation of glare from a statically significant sample is included in the thesis.

Abstract (sommario):
organismes funcionen a nivell molecular.

ratolí, rata i pollastre.

aproximaciones computacionales y experimentales produce mejores

The constantly increasing amount of available genome sequences, along
with an increasing number of experimental techniques, will help to
produce the complete catalog of cellular functions for different
organisms, including humans. Such a catalog will define the base from
which we will better understand how organisms work at the molecular
level. At the same time it will shed light on which changes are
associated with disease. Therefore, the raw sequence from genome
sequencing projects is worthless without the complete analysis and
further annotation of the genomic features that define those functions.
This dissertation presents our contribution to three related aspects of
gene annotation on eukaryotic genomes.

First, a comparison at sequence level of human and mouse genomes was
performed by developing a semi-automatic analysis pipeline. The SGP2
gene-finding tool was developed from procedures used in this pipeline.
The concept behind SGP2 is that similarity regions obtained by TBLASTX
are used to increase the score of exons predicted by geneid, in order to
produce a more accurate set of gene structures. SGP2 provides a
specificity that is high enough for its predictions to be experimentally
verified by RT-PCR. The RT-PCR validation of predicted splice junctions
also serves as example of how combined computational and experimental
approaches will yield the best results.

Then, we performed a descriptive analysis at sequence level of the
splice site signals from a reliable set of orthologous genes for human,
mouse, rat and chicken. We have explored the differences at nucleotide
sequence level between U2 and U12 for the set of orthologous introns
derived from those genes. We found that orthologous splice signals
between human and rodents and within rodents are more conserved than
unrelated splice sites. However, additional conservation can be
explained mostly by background intron conservation. Additional
conservation over background is detectable in orthologous mammalian and
chicken splice sites. Our results also indicate that the U2 and U12
intron classes have evolved independently since the split of mammals and
birds. We found neither convincing case of interconversion between these
two classes in our sets of orthologous introns, nor any single case of
switching between AT-AC and GT-AG subtypes within U12 introns. In
contrast, switching between GT-AG and GC-AG U2 subtypes does not appear
to be unusual.

Finally, we implemented visualization tools to integrate annotation
features for gene- finding and comparative analyses. One of those tools,
gff2ps, was used to draw the whole genome maps for human, fruitfly and
mosquito. gff2aplot and the accompanying parsers facilitate the task of
integrating sequence annotations with the output of homologybased tools,
like BLAST.We have also adapted the concept of pictograms to the
comparative analysis of orthologous splice sites, by developing compi.

Jarman, Annamart. "Financial evaluation of the UG2 and Merensky Reef on Twickenham, North Eastern Bushveld Complex, South Africa". Diss., 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/31131.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The Twickenham Platinum Mine (TPM) Project is located in the north eastern limb of the Bushveld Complex, north west of Steelpoort in the Limpopo Province. The property hosts platinum group metals (PGM) mineralisation in the Merensky Reef (MR) and Upper Group 2 Chromitite (UG2). The two reefs are separated by 400 m of mafic and ultramafic rocks of the Rustenburg Layered Suite. The question that must be answered with this study relates to the economic viability of the MR compared to that of the UG2 at the TPM Project, as it stands in 2011. The assumption is that no mining has commenced on this project and that there is an equal opportunity to commence mining on one of the reefs. The study describes the ore body characteristic for each reef, focussing on the lithologies, structure, and resources available. The discounted cash flow (DCF) method was used to determine the economic value of each reef. The net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR) were calculated and used to compare the ore bodies. The input parameters to the DCF are the main limiting factors to this method, as the results are heavily dependent on the assumptions made. The input parameters used were based on actual published values and generally accepted and motivated assumptions. A sensitivity and risk analysis was completed to identify value ranges and potential risks to the projects. The outcome of the analysis has been compared to other projects as a benchmark to ensure the project assumptions were realistic. The world markets supply and demand for PGM is intricately related to exchange rates, metal prices, inflation, and investment risk. These have an influence on the strategic planning for a company as well as investment decisions through various project evaluation methods. South Africa has a long history of mining and metals extraction. Extensive mining legislation has been developed to ensure the country’s mineral wealth is protected and the health and safety of employees are high priority. Specific challenges related L! to mining on the Eastern Limb are discussed in order to justify the high risk assigned to the project for this evaluation. The DCF was calculated and the outcome indicated that neither the MR nor the UG2 is economically viable using these parameters in the 2011 economy. The MR evaluation produced a negative NPV (R -1,664,541,443.47) and an IRR of 9 %, which is well below the required discount rate of 12 %. The initial project capital will be repaid after 19 years of the 33 year life of mine. The sensitivity analysis showed that by reducing the initial capital by 30 %, the project produces a positive NPV. The other factor that produced a positive NPV was by reducing the operating cost by 50 %. This project will have to be re-evaluated after all parameters have been tested and some re-engineering has been done to optimise the extraction of the MR ore body. The UG2 evaluation produced a negative NPV (R -109,614,208.27) and an IRR of 12 %, equal to the required discount rate. The initial project capital will be repaid after 16 years of the 32 year life of mine. The sensitivity analysis showed encouraging results, as minor changes to the input parameters produced a positive NPV. The two parameters that were most significant were the recoveries and the capital requirements. By increasing the recovery percentage by 2 %, the project NPV becomes positive and a reduction of the initial capital by 10 %, also resulted in the NPV becoming positive. This indicates that with some refinement to the input parameters, the UG2 could be extracted as an economically viable project. The only concern is the sensitivity to changes in grade, which will have to be very well defined and controlled when mining commences. The risk assessment related closely to the challenges identified for a mining operation on the Eastern Limb, with the relationship with the local community and the build-up phase of the project emerging as the highest risks. The limited infrastructure development and high levels of poverty that exists in the area has a direct influence on the support structures and services available for the build-up phase of a mine. The build-up phase requires substantial development and services that will have to be sourced at high risk and cost from substantial distances, to ensure that steady state is reached. The socio-economic development of the local community is critical for the success of the mine. Upliftment of the local community in terms of education and training, job opportunities and health care will provide the foundation for a good relationship

In this study, an Ugi four-component reaction (Ugi-4CR) utilizing formylphenylboronic acids or formylphenylboronate esters under mild condition is developed. The described reactions were performed in methanol and accelerated by employing microwave irradiation. In addition, the liquid-liquid acid/base extraction protocol for the purification and isolation of all reported final products were also included making this strategy suitable for the preparation of chemical libraries and provided a unique opportunity to access a broad range of boron-containing analogs. Two series of boron-containing products were synthesized and subsequently evaluated for their anti-cancer activity by the MTT assay. Two potential lead compounds were found to have potent activity against the HepG2, MDA-MB231, and A549 cancer cell lines, demonstrating the potential of this approach for use in the development of novel boron-containing pharmaceuticals.

1. Synthesis of Tetra Boron-containing Ugi Analogous : In this study, the Ugi-4CR reaction of boron-containing isocyanide with other boron-containing compounds was optimized, and nine boron-containing double peptiods containing four boronate esters functional groups were successfully synthesized by microwave reaction. These compounds could be potentially utilized in boron neutron capture therapy due to their high boron content. 2. Boronate Esters Functional Groups Deprotection : In this study, we attempt three way to deprotect boronate esters functional groups into boronic acid compounds will be discussed. Since the purification of boron-containing compounds is not easy, it is hoped that high-efficiency, high-yield methods can be identified and boron-containing compounds can be improved yield. 3. Biological Evaluation of Tetra Boron Analogs : We will compare boron-containing compounds, boron-containing fructose compounds synthesized in our laboratory, and BNCT clinically used BPA. By binding boronic acid compounds to DAHMI, they will glow in the fluorescence of U2OS cells. Gathered in the nucleus, and brighter than the BPA through the fluorescence chart, and further use of the rheometer to determine the amount of fluorescence of these boron-containing drugs entering the cells to enter the cell, and discuss these studies.

Abstract (sommario):
In a system where it cannot be reduced to a pure series and parallel form (i.e., complex), reliability is obtained by universal generating function (UGF) technique. The intuitionistic fuzzy sets (IFS) concept with triangular fuzzy number (TFN) and Weibull lifetime distribution is introduced to find the fuzzy reliability of the same system. Also, averaging operator with given equal weights is used with the set of three triangular intuitionistic fuzzy number. A numerical example is solved for demonstration.

Abstract (sommario):
In the tourism sector, online tourist reviews analysis is one of the methods to evaluate the products and services offered by businesses and understand the needs of tourists. These reviews take place in social networks and e-commerce sites in parallel with the developments in information and communication technologies. Tourists generate these reviews during or after their use of the products or services. In the literature, these reviews are referred to as UGC (User Generated Content) or eWOM (electronic word-of-mouth). The scientific evaluation of the textual contents in tourist reviews is done by text mining, which is a sub-area of data mining. This chapter discusses the methods and techniques of opinion mining or sentiment analysis. In addition, aspect-based sentiment analysis and techniques to be used in the application are discussed. A case study was carried out using aspect-based sentiment analysis method. In the application “Cappadocia home cooking” restaurant used tourist reviews.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Criticality safety evaluations implement requirements to proof of sufficient sub critical margins outside of the reactor environment for example in fuel fabrication plants. Basic criticality data (i.e., criticality standards) are used in the determination of sub critical margins for all processes involving plutonium or enriched uranium. There are several criticality international standards, e.g., ARH-600, which is one the US nuclear industry relies on. The French Nuclear Safety Authority (DGSNR and its advising body IRSN) has requested AREVA NP to review the criticality standards used for the evaluation of its Low Enriched Uranium fuel fabrication plants with CRISTAL V0, the recently updated French criticality evaluation package. Criticality safety is a concern for every phase of the fabrication process including UF6 cylinder storage, UF6-UO2 conversion, powder storage, pelletizing, rod loading, assembly fabrication, and assembly transportation. Until 2003, the accepted criticality standards were based on the French CEA work performed in the late seventies with the APOLLO1 cell/assembly computer code. APOLLO1 is a spectral code, used for evaluating the basic characteristics of fuel assemblies for reactor physics applications, which has been enhanced to perform criticality safety calculations. Throughout the years, CRISTAL, starting with APOLLO1 and MORET 3 (a 3D Monte Carlo code), has been improved to account for the growth of its qualification database and for increasing user requirements. Today, CRISTAL V0 is an up-to-date computational tool incorporating a modern basic microscopic cross section set based on JEF2.2 and the comprehensive APOLLO2 and MORET 4 codes. APOLLO2 is well suited for criticality standards calculations as it includes a sophisticated self shielding approach, a Pij flux determination, and a 1D transport (Sn) process. CRISTAL V0 is the result of more than five years of development work focusing on theoretical approaches and the implementation of user-friendly graphical interfaces. Due to its comprehensive physical simulation and thanks to its broad qualification database with more than a thousand benchmark/calculation comparisons, CRISTAL V0 provides outstanding and reliable accuracy for criticality evaluations for configurations covering the entire fuel cycle (i.e. from enrichment, pellet/assembly fabrication, transportation, to fuel reprocessing). After a brief description of the calculation scheme and the physics algorithms used in this code package, results for the various fissile media encountered in a UO2 fuel fabrication plant will be detailed and discussed.

Abstract (sommario):
The fuel rod performance of enhanced thermal conductivity UO2/graphene composites is investigated through a LBLOCA analysis. The benefits increased monotonically with increasing thermal conductivity in terms of reduced fuel center temperature and PCT. The performance of the UO2/graphene composite fuel is assessed in OPR-1000 (Optimized Power Reactor-1000) during a LBLOCA. Graphene can be a promising material for developing advanced nuclear fuel because of its property about the high thermal conductivity and low absorption cross section. The results confirm a LBLOCA performance related to PCT of the UO2/graphene composite fuel and its potential while maintaining large safety margins.

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract As one of the most important means of nature gas peak shaving and energy strategic reserving, the reliability assessment of underground gas storage (UGS) system is necessary. Although many methods have been proposed for system reliability assessment, the functional heterogeneity of components and the influence of hydrothermal parameters on system reliability are neglected. To overcome these problems, we propose and apply a framework to assess UGS system reliability. Combining two-layer Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) technique with hydrothermal calculation, the framework integrates dynamic functional reliability of components into system reliability evaluation. To reflect the state transition process of repairable components and their impact on system reliability, the Markov model is introduced at system level. In order to improve the calculation speed, artificial neural network model based on off-line MCS is established to replace the on-line MCS at components level. The proposed framework is applied to the reliability assessment and operation optimization of an UGS under different operation conditions. Compared with the traditional single-layer MCS method, the proposed method can not only reflect the variation of UGS reliability with hydrothermal parameters and operation time, but also can improve evaluation efficiency significantly.
