(Int J Obstet Anesth. 2023;53:103623) Pregnancy-induced changes in airway anatomy and physiology can make airway management more difficult in this population. Clinical airway assessment parameters are used to predict difficult airways; however, literature evaluating ultrasound (US) airway parameters in pregnant patients compared with nonpregnant patients is limited. This study aimed to evaluate and compare US airway assessment parameters in pregnant and non‐pregnant women. This study also investigated the associations between established difficult airway predictors and US parameters in the two

Airway narrowing due to hyperresponsiveness severely limits gas exchange in patients with asthma. Imaging studies in humans and animals have shown that bronchoconstriction causes patchy patterns of ventilation defects throughout the lungs, and several computational models have predicted that these regions are due to constriction of smaller airways. However, these imaging approaches are often limited in their ability to capture dynamic changes in small airways, and the patterns of constriction are heterogeneous. To directly investigate regional variations in airway narrowing and the response to

AbstractImpulse oscillometry (IOS) is a variant of forced oscillation technique described by Dubois 50 years ago, which allows us to measure the reactance of the airways and the resistance of the small and large airways during tidal breathing. It requires minimal patient cooperation from subjects who are unable to perform spirometry, like elders, children and patients with neurologic disorders. IOS can outline the diagnosis of obstructive airway disease, differentiate small airway obstruction from large airway obstruction. The sensory neuropeptides, substance P and neurokinin A, are present in human airway nerves, beneath and within the epithelium, around blood vessels and submucosal glands, and within the bronchial smooth muscle layer. Neurokinin A is a more potent bronchoconstrictor than substance P. Asthmatics are hyperresponsive to neurokinin A and substance P. Endobronchial ultrasound (EBUS) revolutionized bronchoscopy. It first became available for clinical use in 1999 as a mechanical radial probe and was initially used to define airway wall anatomy, but was supplanted by convex probe EBUS bronchoscopes in 2002–now the preferred initial approach for evaluation of mediastinal pathology. Radial EBUS has since proven invaluable for evaluating the peripheral lung and aiding biopsy guidance despite the limitations in ultrasound (US) propagation through air filled structures. Centrally, airways pass through the mediastinum in direct contact with the esop

Thailand's aerial geostrategic importance led the United States to offer a generous air aid programme in the 1950s. The US funded the refurbishment of airfields across the country: the extension and hardening of airstrips, and the construction of new tarmacs, terminal buildings and navigation equipment. They also provided technical training to Thai nationals. The leading US international airline Pan American Airways helped modernize Thai Airways. Over the last decade, US passenger airline industry faced an extremely adverse period when it comes to profit generation, culminating in significant losses and bankruptcies of several carriers. Within this market, airlines operate under a very demanding and stressful environment. Three main factors are reflective of this specific setting, such as: the existence of unpredictable fuel costs (being the major burden to these firms), the increasing competition forces mainly coming from low-cost carriers and a very economic-sensible air travel demand faced by carriers. Abstract Fractals help us understand physiological systems in two different ways. First, they provide a phenomenological description. Since fractals have qualitatively different properties than nonfactual, just the realization that we are working with a fractal is important. This realization can actually be difficult, even if the pattern is “obvious.” Thus, it has been a significant surprise each time yet another physiological system was found to be fractal, such as the branching of the airways in the lung, or the distribution of blood flow in the heart, or the kinetics of ion channels.

Particles deposited on mucosa or penetrating into lower airway are two exposure routes. Quantifying administered dose of these two routes gives us idea for future advanced individual protection. Here, we report an in-vitro method to assess the administered doses of eyes, lips, and lower airway. A CT scanning and 3D-printing based human replica is developed, and exposed in front of the 0.6-5μm monodispersed fluorescent particles. At small size particles (<2.5 μm), the administered dose intensity of penetrating into lower airway inhalation (~59.41×10-2 g/g, 0.6μm) is higher than that of eyes

Abstract (sommario):
Abstract Rationale Early treatment of asthma exacerbations with inhaled corticosteroids is the best strategy for management, although use of an increased or stable dose is questioned. Objectives To compare the clinical effectiveness and safety of increased versus stable doses of inhaled corticosteroids as part of a patient-initiated action plan for the home management of exacerbations in children and adults with persistent asthma. Search methods We searched the Cochrane Airways Group Specialised Register (part of CENTRAL), MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, major trials registries and handsearched abstr
