Abstract (sommario):
Biological organisms exhibit diverse strategies for adapting to varying environments. For example, a population of organisms may express the same phenotype in all environments (“unvarying strategy”) or follow environmental cues and express alternative phenotypes to match the environment (“tracking strategy”), or diversify into coexisting phenotypes to cope with environmental uncertainty (“bet-hedging strategy”). We introduce a general framework for studying how organisms respond to environmental variations, which models an adaptation strategy by an abstract mapping from environmental cues to p

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis concentrates on Branching Processes. We look at applying spine techniques and martingale changes of measure in order to first provide alternative proofs of well known discrete-time results concerning Branching Processes in Random Environments. We then apply the same ideas in a different setting to study Branching Brownian Motion with a Random Environment, focussing on the long-term spatial behaviour of the process. The final area of interest is Branching Brownian Motion with absorption at the origin, where we consider t he asymptotic behaviour of the survival probabilities near cri

It is based on the Kalman filter for equalization and tracking of acoustic channels characterized by considerable multipath. To model this channel and its dependency on the ocean environment we use the Bellhop acoustic ray tracing model. Error-correction coding is applied to the source data. Recursively updated channel estimates are used to update the state filters and tracking of the channel. It is shown that, under moderate conditions of Doppler shift

Climate change may cause epidemic threats as species spreading human diseases invades previously unpopulated areas. A species can establish in new areas if they fulfills an invasion criterion. Two common invasion criteria are the long-term exponential growth-rate, r, and the basic reproduction number, R0, that measures the population's exponential growth in time and growth between generations respectively. Previous work have determined the long-term exponential growth-rate of the mosquito Aedes aegypti, a vector spreading dengue, zika and yellow fever, in Europe. However, in epidemiology r is

Abstract (sommario):
Increasing global urbanization has altered landscapes for many wildlife species, including carnivores. Some carnivore species have been able to adapt to and even thrive in urban environments, including coyotes (Canis latrans). As coyotes continue to settle in more urban areas, human-coyote conflicts, such as attacks on humans or pets, are also increasing. Understanding the various factors affecting space use of urban coyotes may assist wildlife officials in reducing such conflicts. We conducted three studies of urban coyotes at varying spatial scales. First, using a captive population of coyot

This handbook covers the complex problems in the retrieval environment. It covers retrieval systems, governance, and coordination; the retrieval environment; and retrieval platforms, as well as equipment. It also involves crisis res

We also tested for inhibition by high concentrations of exogenous DNA, hypothesizing that DNA from increasingly closely related species would be increasingly inhibitory. All tested inhibitors impacted qPCR, though on
