Abstract (sommario):
This paper reviews and presents a coherent approach to the design of compact vertical coupler (VC) in InP-based compound semiconductor with variable polarization dependence. As a polarization-independent (PI) coupler, the VC is shown to transfer light with more than 90% efficiency for both transverse-electric (TE) and transverse-magnetic (TM) polarizations. As a polarization-mode splitter (PMS), the VC is shown to preferentially couple TE or TM modes with a contrast ratio of up to 20 dB. We further demonstrate the single-mesa VC, which simplifies the fabrication process and potentially could improve the process yield, and its integration with a multimode interferometer (MMI). The versatility makes the VC a compact and useful input-stage device that not only maximizes input/output coupling efficiency to small active devices but also provides a degree of polarization control before the actual device.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis presents and validates a model for designing multimode SOA-like waveguide devices. This model was used to design an active vertical coupler wavelength converter device making use of both crossgain and cross-phase modulation. The simulated output extinction ratio was over 30dB for a maximum input pump level of under 6 dBm. A multi-quantum well wafer structure was designed and ordered. Two rounds of devices were designed and multiple fabrication processes developed. These included three levels of etch depth, for which one depth was required to be correct within a small tolerance. Also, the dry plasma etch was required to create totally internally reflecting mirrors in a two step etch so much development was required for this step to keep the surface optically smooth. After the fabrication process development devices were successfully fabricated with good quality waveguides and totally internally reflecting mirrors. Characterisation of completed devices exhibit couphng and gain variation due to carrier modulation. The extinction ratio of the devices has been measured as over 30dB with varying current injection. The transmission extinction ratio has been measured as over 20dB with varying injection current. It was discovered that the fabricated devices have a low quantum efficiency (?e). This prevented high carrier concentration which made optical saturation too small to observe. Although all-optical wavelength conversion was not demonstrated, the successful modulation of the coupling due to carrier population changes by injection current has dnonstrated the operation principles. Optical saturation of the carrier density and modulation of the coupling should be achievable with a wafer design that has improved carrier confinement in the active layer. Probable solutions to all these problems have been described which should result in high quality devices.

Abstract (sommario):
The objective of the research is to design an electro-optic control for the Active Vertical Coupler-based Optical Cross-point Switch (OXS). The electronic control should be implemented on Printed Circuit Board (PCB) and therefore the design will include the PCB design as well. The aim of the electronic control board is to process the headers of the packets prior to entering the OXS to be switched and from the information in the headers, determine the state that the OXS should be configured in. It should then configure the optical cross-point accordingly. The electronic control board should show flexibility in the sense that it can handle different types of traffic and resolve possible contention that may occur. The research seeks to understand the problems associated with Photonic Packet Switching (PPS) networks. Two of the main problems identified in a PPS network are contention resolution and the lack of variable delays for storing optical packets. The OXS was analyzed and found to meet the requirements for future ultra-high speed PPS network technology with its high extinction ratio, wide optical bandwidth, ultra-fast switching speed and low crosstalk levels. Photonic packets were generated with 4-bit, 8-bit or 16-bit headers at a bit rate of 155 Mbit/s followed by a PRBS (Pseudo Random Bit Sequence) payload at 10 Gbit/s. Different scenarios were created with these types of packets and the electro-optic control and OXS were subjected to these scenarios with the aim of testing the flexibility of the electro-optic control to control the OXS. These scenarios include:
  • Fixed length packets arriving synchronously at one input of the OXS. Some packets are destined for output 1, some are destined for output 2 and some are destined for output 3, therefore realizing a 1-to-3 optical switch.
  • Eight variable length packets arriving synchronously at the OXS at one input, all of them destined for one output. The electro-optic control should open the switch cell for the correct amount of time.
  • Three variable length packets arriving synchronously and asynchronously at one input of the OXS. Some packets are destined for output 1 while other packets are destined for output 2. The electro-optic control should open the correct switch cell for the correct amount of time.
  • Two fixed length packets arriving at the OXS synchronously on different input ports at the same time, both destined for the same output port. The electro-optic control should detect the contention and switch the packets in such a way as to resolve the contention.
  • The electro-optic control and OXS managed to switch all these types of data traffic (scenarios) successfully and resolve the contention with an optical delay buffer. The success of the results was measured in two ways. Firstly it was deemed successful if the expected output sequence was measured at the corresponding output ports. Secondly it was successful if the degradation in quality of the packet was not drastic, meaning the output packets should have an BER (Bit Error Rate) of less than 10-9. The quality of the packets was measured in the form of eye diagrams before and after the switching and then compared. The research resulted in the design and implementation of a flexible electro-optic control for the OXS. The problem of contention was resolved for fixed length synchronous packets and a proposal is discussed to store packets for variable lengths of time by using the OXS. This electro-optic control has the potential to control the OXS for traffic with higher complexities and make the OXS compatible with future developments.

In this thesis, an improved type of active vertical maglev inductively coupled structure of the contactless rotating power transfer system for high-speed rotating application in medical has been developed. The high-speed rotating equipment is aimed at the application of new techniques which will solve the issue of power supply issue and reduce the wear and tear caused by constant usage. To construct a platform to place the DUT for contactless rotating power transfer in this thesis. The magnetic field finite-element-method (FEM) simulation software is used to analyze the different structures of coils. The single sandwich windings with shell composed of magnetic materials are designed to improve the coupling capability. Moreover, in order to verify the power transmission in process of rotation, six brushless doubly fed rotationally driven architecture made up of three-dimensional printing technology have been integrated. Finally, the experimental results show that the rotary machinery is able to be powered and worked by proposed system. The maximum output power received in load is 614 W with transmission efficiency of 86.2%. In addition, the transfer efficiency has reached about 90% with 450 W output power.

In this thesis, an improved type of the contactless rotating power transfer system with active vertical maglev structure for rotating applications in the medical field is proposed. The body shape of the rotating equipment is designed as a cavity in which to place the experimental unit, and the rotating equipment is constructed to work in an isolated place. The magnetic field finite-element-method simulation software is used to analyze the different co-constructions combined with the maglev DC coils and the inductive power transfer AC coils which are proposed in this thesis. According to the analysis, the planar toroidal magnetic coupling structure is chosen. To improve the power transfer efficiency, the S-P resonant topology is chosen. Moreover, in order to verify the feasibility of the power transmission in the process of rotation, a permanent magnet synchronous motor structure is integrated. The horizontally stable structure is integrated by two permanent maglev layers in this thesis. Based on the experimental results, the maximum output power received in load of the rotary machinery is 139 W with conversion efficiency of 66.17%. In addition, the maximum conversion efficiency has reached about 72.02% with 109 W output power.

Abstract (sommario):
The strongest Indian summer monsoon (ISM) on the planet features prolonged clustered spells of wet and dry conditions often lasting for two to three weeks, known as active and break monsoons. The active and break monsoons are attributed to a quasi-periodic intraseasonal oscillation (ISO), which is an extremely important form of the ISM variability bridging weather and climate variation. The ISO over India is part of the ISO in global tropics. The latter is one of the most important meteorological phenomena discovered during the 20th century (Madden & Julian, 1971, 1972). The extreme dry and wet events are regulated by the boreal summer ISO (BSISO). The BSISO over Indian monsoon region consists of northward propagating 30–60 day and westward propagating 10–20 day modes. The “clustering” of synoptic activity was separately modulated by both the 30–60 day and 10–20 day BSISO modes in approximately equal amounts. The clustering is particularly strong when the enhancement effect from both modes acts in concert. The northward propagation of BSISO is primarily originated from the easterly vertical shear (increasing easterly winds with height) of the monsoon flows, which by interacting with the BSISO convective system can generate boundary layer convergence to the north of the convective system that promotes its northward movement. The BSISO-ocean interaction through wind-evaporation feedback and cloud-radiation feedback can also contribute to the northward propagation of BSISO from the equator. The 10–20 day oscillation is primarily produced by convectively coupled Rossby waves modified by the monsoon mean flows. Using coupled general circulation models (GCMs) for ISO prediction is an important advance in subseasonal forecasts. The major modes of ISO over Indian monsoon region are potentially predictable up to 40–45 days as estimated by multiple GCM ensemble hindcast experiments. The current dynamical models’ prediction skills for the large initial amplitude cases are approximately 20–25 days, but the prediction of developing BSISO disturbance is much more difficult than the prediction of the mature BSISO disturbances. This article provides a synthesis of our current knowledge on the observed spatial and temporal structure of the ISO over India and the important physical processes through which the BSISO regulates the ISM active-break cycles and severe weather events. Our present capability and shortcomings in simulating and predicting the monsoon ISO and outstanding issues are also discussed.
