Abstract (sommario):

The one-step-ahead controllers represent a branch of minimum prediction error adaptive controllers. They combine the parameter estimation of the controlled system model with the control scheme; therefore, they are especially suitable for non-linear and time-varying systems. Since the estimated parameters are updated at each time step (by using the sampled data), these methods can be adopted for non-linear applications. Consequently, the one-step-ahead controllers do not require knowledge of the dynamic characteristics of the controlled system (e.g. state-space systems or transfer functions). Sometimes, in the gas turbine field, the control system could produce an excessive control effort, due to sudden variations of the electric load. In order to reduce this control action, the weighted one-step-ahead adaptive (WOSAA) control algorithm considers a penalty associated with the control effort using an appropriate cost function. In this way, the control variable does not assume values that are too large, even when the gas turbine undergoes sudden changes in the external load. As a consequence, the robustness and stability features of the WOSAA control system are increased. The results show that the WOSAA control technique, applied to both the double-shaft aero-derivative gas turbine and the single-shaft heavy-duty gas turbine, effectively counteracts the load reduction with limited overshoot in the controlled variables with reduced control effort.

Objectives: The urology-oncology service in NHS Ayrshire and Arran (AA) is nurse-led, with a multidisciplinary team (MDT) process at its core. Here, we assess the efficacy of this nurse-led service against similar services and consider it in the context of the new NHS cancer strategy. Materials and methods: Audit data regarding the management of patients with urological malignancies published by the West of Scotland Cancer Network (WoSCAN) were compared against pre-determined quality performance indicators. These data were used to assess the efficacy of the NHS AA service against the other WoSCAN centres. Results: All parameters analysed were comparable, except for the following performance indicators for which the NHS AA data appeared to show significant improvement compared with the other WoSCAN centres: the number of patients with bladder cancer with recorded TNM clinical staging ( p = 0.012); the proportion of patients with prostate cancer who underwent transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy for histological diagnosis where a minimum of 10 cores are received by pathology ( p = 0.043); and the number of patients with metastatic prostate cancer who underwent immediate hormone therapy ( p = 0.031). Conclusion: Our analysis demonstrates that the NHS AA urology-oncology nurse-led MDT-based service is a highly efficient and well-functioning structure.

Madhumuni ya makala hii yalikuwa kuainisha mafumbo yanayotumiwa katika miktadha ya wosia wa babu kwa wavulana miongoni mwa Wabukusu wa Kenya. Uandishi wa makala hii ulitumia nadharia ya umitindo iliyoasisiwa na Leech (1965). Nadharia hii huhimiza umuhimu wa mitindo tofauti ya lugha katika fasihi. Data za Makala zilikusanywa kutoka kata mbili za wilaya ya Kimilili. Muundo wa kimaelezo ulitumika kuwasilisha na kuchanganua data. Mbinu za mahojiano na uchunzaji wa kushiriki zilitumika kukusanya data. Sampuli ya kimaksudi ilitumiwa kuwachagua wazee wanne wa kati ya miaka sitini na sabini na wavulana wanne wa kati ya miaka kumi na nane hadi ishirini na mbili kutoka kata zizo hizo ili kushiriki katika utafiti. Utafiti ulibainisha kuwa babu hutumia mafumbo ya vitendawili, mafumbo ya jazanda, mafumbo ya majina, mafumbo ya maonyo, mafumbo ya miko na chemshabongo katika wosia wao kwa wavulana. Makala hii ina manufaa kwa wanafunzi na wataalamu wa fasihi simulizi, shuleni na vyuoni, kwa kuwafahamisha kuhusu aina ya mafumbo yanayotumika katika jamii ya Wabukusu na jamii zingine. Makala hii inapendekeza kuwa vyombo vya habari viwe vikupeperusha hotuba za wosia unaotumia mafumbo kwa wananchi ili kuwafikia watu wengi. Kwa kufanya hivi, wavulana wengi watapata ujumbe uliomo kwenye mafumbo haya na wataimarika kitabia.

ABSTRACT In this study, we describe wosA, a Proteus mirabilis gene identified by its ability to increase swarming motility when overexpressed. At various times during the swarming cycle, the increased expression of wosA resulted in a 4- to 16-fold upregulation of the transcription of flhDC, encoding the master regulator of the flagellar cascade. In turn, the expression of flaA, encoding flagellin, was substantially increased in wosA-overexpressing strains. The overexpression of wosA also resulted in constitutive swarmer cell differentiation in liquid medium, a normally nonpermissive condition. However, in wosA-overexpressing strains, the onset of swarming was not altered. A null wosA allele resulted in a slight decrease in swarming motility. The expression of wosA was growth phase dependent during growth in liquid and on agar plates during swarmer cell differentiation. Increasing the viscosity of liquid medium by the addition of polyvinylpyrrolidone induced swarmer cell differentiation and resulted in a fourfold increase in wosA transcription. A fliL mutation that results in constitutive swarmer cell elongation also increased wosA transcription. In this study, we discuss the possible role of the wosA gene product in signal transduction from solid surfaces to induce swarmer cell differentiation, possibly via alterations in the motor switch complex. This study also suggests that despite constitutive swarmer cell differentiation in wosA-overexpressing strains, there are additional regulatory and/or environmental conditions that may control the onset of swarming migration.

Abstract Erythrocyte polymorphisms, including ovalocytosis, have been associated with protection against malaria. This study in the Wosera, a malaria holoendemic region of Papua New Guinea, examined the genetic basis of ovalocytosis and its influence on susceptibility to malaria infection. Whereas previous studies showed significant associations between Southeast Asian ovalocytosis (caused by a 27– base pair deletion in the anion exchanger 1 protein gene) and protection from cerebral malaria, this mutation was observed in only 1 of 1019 individuals in the Wosera. Polymerase chain reaction strategies were developed to genotype individuals for the glycophorin C exon 3 deletion associated with Melanesian Gerbich negativity (GPCΔex3). This polymorphism was commonly observed in the study population (GPCΔex3 frequency = 0.465, n = 742). Although GPCΔex3 was significantly associated with increased ovalocytosis, it was not associated with differences in either Plasmodium falciparumor P vivax infection measured over the 7-month study period. Future case-control studies will determine if GPCΔex3 reduces susceptibility to malaria morbidity.

Abstract (sommario):

Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui Penerapan Media Permainan Congklak dalam Meningkatkan Kemampuan Berhitung Siswa Kelas II SD Inpres Wosia. Metode dalam penelitian ini yaitu metode pre-experiment tanpa adanya kelompok pembanding. Penelitian ini mengunakan One Group Pretest-Posttest Design dengan teknik analisis data menggunakan paired t test. Teknik pengumpulan data yang digunakan adalah soal tes. Penelitian ini menggunakan keseluruhan populasi yang berjumlah 24 orang siswa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan perbedaan rata-rata diperoleh nilai posttest = 77.91 lebih tinggi dibandingkan nilai pretest = 43.75, sedangkan thitung = -14.697 ≠ ttabel = 1.714 . Maka dapat disimpulkan H0 ditolak dan Ha diterima atau penerapan media permainan Congklak dapat meningkatkan kemampuan berhitung siswa Kelas II SD Inpres Wosia.

Abstract (sommario):

Abstract. We develop a general framework for the frequency analysis of irregularly sampled time series. It is based on the Lomb–Scargle periodogram, but extended to algebraic operators accounting for the presence of a polynomial trend in the model for the data, in addition to a periodic component and a background noise. Special care is devoted to the correlation between the trend and the periodic component. This new periodogram is then cast into the Welch overlapping segment averaging (WOSA) method in order to reduce its variance. We also design a test of significance for the WOSA periodogram, against the background noise. The model for the background noise is a stationary Gaussian continuous autoregressive-moving-average (CARMA) process, more general than the classical Gaussian white or red noise processes. CARMA parameters are estimated following a Bayesian framework. We provide algorithms that compute the confidence levels for the WOSA periodogram and fully take into account the uncertainty in the CARMA noise parameters. Alternatively, a theory using point estimates of CARMA parameters provides analytical confidence levels for the WOSA periodogram, which are more accurate than Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) confidence levels and, below some threshold for the number of data points, less costly in computing time. We then estimate the amplitude of the periodic component with least-squares methods, and derive an approximate proportionality between the squared amplitude and the periodogram. This proportionality leads to a new extension for the periodogram: the weighted WOSA periodogram, which we recommend for most frequency analyses with irregularly sampled data. The estimated signal amplitude also permits filtering in a frequency band. Our results generalise and unify methods developed in the fields of geosciences, engineering, astronomy and astrophysics. They also constitute the starting point for an extension to the continuous wavelet transform developed in a companion article (Lenoir and Crucifix, 2018). All the methods presented in this paper are available to the reader in the Python package WAVEPAL.

Abstract Motivation Percent Spliced-In (PSI) values are commonly used to report alternative pre-mRNA splicing (AS) changes. Previous PSI-detection tools were limited to specific AS events and were evaluated by in silico RNA-seq data. We developed PSI-Sigma, which uses a new PSI index, and we employed actual (non-simulated) RNA-seq data from spliced synthetic genes (RNA Sequins) to benchmark its performance (i.e. precision, recall, false positive rate and correlation) in comparison with three leading tools (rMATS, SUPPA2 and Whippet). Results PSI-Sigma outperformed these tools, especially in the case of AS events with multiple alternative exons and intron-retention events. We also briefly evaluated its performance in long-read RNA-seq analysis, by sequencing a mixture of human RNAs and RNA Sequins with nanopore long-read sequencers. Artykuł dotyczy przemian dyskursu liberalnego w Polsce w kontekście aktualnych podziałów politycznych. Przedmiot badania stanowi liberalno-lewicowa narracja (rozumiana jako struktura dyskursu mająca formę wartościującego, kauzalnego i usytuowanego historycznie opisu zdarzeń i ich uczestników) o transformacji ustrojowej, jej ideowych źródłach i skutkach społecznych. Analiza skoncentrowana jest na publicystyce dwóch wiodących autorów liberalno-lewicowych: Grzegorza Sroczyńskiego i Rafała Wosia. Na podstawie ich artykułów prasowych, internetowych, książek i audycji radiowych z lat 2013–2018 wyróżniono główne struktury nowej narracji liberalno-lewicowej dotyczące między innymi rozliczania (neo)liberałów, ujmowania się za ludem i różnicy pokoleniowej rzutującej na ocenę transformacji. Postawiono także pytanie o komunikacyjną skuteczność, oryginalność i tożsamość dyskursywną formułowanej przez tych publicystów narracji.

Metode penelitian ini adalah metode kualitatif deskriptif, dan prosedur untuk mengumpulkan data adalah observasi, wawancara dan dokumentasi. Because many accidents in China involve a ship in a barge fleet colliding with a bridge pier, determining the impact force of the ship is important. To obtain an equation that describes the impact force of a ship colliding with a bridge pier, a mechanical model of the collision is simplified, and the results from other researchers are applied. Based on the equation, it is found that the impact force of a ship colliding with a bridge pier is not only relevant to the mass，velocity, board thicknesses of the ship, and the impact angle, but also to the remaining velocity coefficient. It has been demonstrated that the result from the proposed equation in this paper is in accordance with that of Gkss’s test in Wosin G theory.

Penelitan ini bertujuan untuk memberikan gambaran mengenai perspektif hedonisme pada wanita sosialita. Penelitian ini menggunakan tipe penelitian Studi Kasus Instrumental dengan melibatkan seorang partisipan penelitian yang terlibat dalam beberapa grup sosialita di Surabaya antara lain WOSCA, IWAPI dan TDA. Partisipan penelitian ini kemudian diwawancarai dengan menggunakan wawancara semi terstruktur untuk mengetahui gambaran mengenai perilaku hedonis pada wanita sosialita. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa partisipan cenderung menganggap bahwa perilaku hedonis di kalangan wanita sosialita merupakan sebuah bentuk interaksi sosial yang juga terjadi di kelompok sosial lainnya. Partisipan menganggap bahwa beberapa faktor yang terkait dengan pelabelan hidup mewah pada wanita sosialita adalah pemaknaan identitas sosial yang cenderung eksklusif dan adanya motif berpengaruh dari anggota, sementara faktor eksternal yang mempengaruhi antara lain adalah kurangnya komunikasi dengan masyarakat, minimnya aktivitas sosial dan pencitraan di media sosial yang berlebihan.

Penelitian ini betujuan untuk mengidentifikasi bentuk tuturan ekspresif dan faktor penyebab tuturan ekspresif guru, serta dampak tuturan ekspresif guru terhadap siswa dalam interaksi pembelajaran di kelas IV SD Inpres 3 Wosia. Jenis penelitian ini adalah kualitatif deskriptif dengan pendekatan fenomenologi. Data diperoleh melalui observasi, wawancara, simak catat, dan teknik rekam. Setelah data terkumpul, kemudian dianalisis melalui tahapan reduksi data, display data, interpretasi dan penafsiran data, kemudian penarikan kesimpulan dan verifikasi data. Berdasarkan hasil analisis data, ditemukan bahwa bentuk tuturan ekspresif guru meliputi; bentuk tindak tutur langsung literal, bentuk tindak tutur langsung tidak literal, tindak tutur tidak langsung literal, tindak tutur tidak langsung tidak literal. Adapun faktor penyebab tuturan ekspresi guru yaitu; mengawali pembelajaran, memotivasi siswa, memberikan apresiasi, mengakhiri pembelajaran, dan siswa tidak mengerjakan tugas.Dampak tuturan ekspresif guru terhadap siswa meliputi; siswa merasa bersemangat, senang dan termotivasi serta bangga terhadap diri sendiri, merasa kecewa, dan sedih.

ABSTRACT Plasmodium falciparum apical membrane antigen 1 (AMA1) is a prime malaria vaccine candidate. Antigenic diversity within parasite populations is one of the main factors potentially limiting the efficacy of any asexual-stage vaccine, including one based on AMA1. The DNA coding for the most variable region of this antigen, domain I, was sequenced in 168 samples from the Wosera region of Papua New Guinea, including samples from symptomatic and asymptomatic infections. Neutrality tests applied to these sequences provided strong evidence of selective pressure operating on the sequence of ama1 domain I, consistent with AMA1 being a target of protective immunity. Similarly, a peculiar pattern of geographical diversity and the particular substitutions found were suggestive of strong constraints acting on the evolution of AMA1 at the population level, probably as a result of immune pressure. In addition, a strong imbalance between symptomatic and asymptomatic infections was detected in the frequency of particular residues at certain polymorphic positions, pointing to AMA1 as being one of the determinants of the morbidity associated with a particular strain. The information yielded by this study has implications for the design and assessment of AMA1-based vaccines and provides additional data supporting the importance of AMA1 as a malaria vaccine candidate.

AbstractThis paper argues that “insider” material, preserved by the Armenians in the archives of the cathedral in New Julfa presents, by virtue of its logic, a one-sided, consensual picture. “Outsider” material contests this view and highlights the underlying conflicts of interest that even existed among the core members of the network. The picture that emerges from this study points to a more dynamic, complex structure in which the multiple interests of individual members of family firms, kin, and community members in different capacities were grafted into one. Loopholes in the system were visible as early as the 1720s, long before the center at New Julfa collapsed. Les archives arméniennes ont été conservées dans la cathédrale de la Nouvelle Julfa. Ces sources “internes” présentent, selon nous, une image partiale de consensus. L'examen minutieux des sources “externes” par contre fait ressortir des conflits d'intérêts même entre les grands négociants du réseau arménien. Ces documents-là attestent des structures complexes plus dynamiques. Dans ce cadre s'inscrivaient les multiples intérêts des membres individuels de la firma familiale, des parents, et des membres de la communauté. Et les faiblesses du système sont déjà perceptibles dans les années vingt du XVIIème siècle, bien avant l'effondrement de son centre à la Nouvelle Julfa.

AbstractThe mosquito sampling efficiency of CDC (Centers for Disease Control) miniature light traps hung adjacent to mosquito nets, was compared with that of both indoor and outdoor human-bait collections in ten villages in the Wosera area of Papua New Guinea. The most frequently collected anopheline in the matched indoor and light trap samples was Anopheles koliensis Owen, followed by A. punctulatusDönitz, A. karwari (James), A. farauti Laveran (sensu lato), A. longirostris Brug and A. bancroftii Giles. All species were much less frequent in the light traps than in landing catches. The hypothesis that the numbers of mosquitoes in light traps are proportional to human landing catches was examined using regression models that allowed for sampling error in both entomological measurements. Light traps under-sampled A. punctulatus and A. farautis.l. at high densities. The models indicated that the ratio of light trap to landing catch females of A. koliensis and A. karwari increased with increasing mosquito density. Light trap catches of A. longirostris were proportional to indoor landing rates but when outdoor landing rates were high this species was under-sampled by light traps. Numbers of A. bancroftii in light traps were found to be proportional to those in outdoor landing catches, but were negatively related to those attempting to bite indoors. Circumsporozoite positivity rates for both Plasmodium falciparum Welch and P. vivax (Grassi & Feletti) in A. punctulatus and A. farauti s.l. were significantly higher in light trap collections than in either indoor or outdoor landing catches, suggesting that light traps may selectively sample older mosquitoes of these species.

AbstractRecent research carried out at the Maya site of Nakum, located in northeastern Guatemala, has brought about the discovery of a large collection of ceramic artefacts. This substantial assemblage, apart from monochrome ceramics, includes fragments of polychrome vessels that are decorated with elaborate iconographic scenes and painted hieroglyphic texts. Most of them date to the Late Classic period (ca. a.d. 600–800), which represents the peak of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. The style of these ceramics, their iconography and accompanying glyphic texts, supplemented in many cases by mineralogical and physicochemical analyses of the ceramic samples, indicate that Nakum was part of a broad and complex network of political and economic interactions between various sites and polities of the southern Maya lowlands in the Classic period. During the first part of the Late Classic period, Nakum seems to maintain close relations with Naranjo, probably serving as its vassal at least from the reign of its renowned king Aj Wosal. After the victory of Tikal over Naranjo in the first part of the eighth century, Nakum shows closer cultural and political connections with Tikal. Nevertheless, towards the end of the Classic era, when we observe the profound collapse of lowland Maya civilization, Nakum elites gain political independence from their former overlords.

In this study, RFID technology and wireless photoelectric sensor (WOSN) technology were combined in the acquisition of traffic information. RFID tag and photoelectric sensor were used as a node to build a traffic information collection network. To improve the life cycle and load performance of the network, and achieve the optimal distribution among nodes, the ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm was taken as the research object, and the network node distribution routing algorithm of multiple RFID tags-photoelectric sensor nodes was designed. The improved ACO based on energy and distance was selected for self-organizing distribution, so that the nodes distributed locally could be regarded as a whole. Then, each local head node transmitted information based on the route generated by the improved ACO, so that the traffic information obtained by each head node was sent to the aggregation node at the lowest cost. In the experiment, the multi RFID tag-photoelectric sensor node distribution based on the improved ACO can extend the network life cycle, and achieve a balanced network load.

Background:Tumour necrosis factor (TNF) receptor-associated periodic syndrome (TRAPS) is one of the best-known monogenic auto-inflammatory disorders resulting from an autosomal dominant variation in the TNF super family receptor 1A (TNFRSF1A) gene (1).Objectives:To define best treatment approach in patients with TRAPS and effect on long-term outcomes.Methods:We reviewed all data on patients with TRAPS enrolled in the Eurofever international registry according the INSAID gene variant classification and the new Eurofever/PRINTO classification criteria (EPCC).Results:Data on 226 patients were available. Patients not fulfilling the EPCC carrying likely benign/benign variants (21 patients, 9%) or VOUS/not classified variants (40 patients, 18%) displayed a milder disease than the patients fulfilling the EPCC with VOUS/not classified variants (38 patients, 17%) or pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants (127 patients, 56%). In particular, in patients not fulfilling the EPCC, less frequent abdominal pain and skin rashes, higher efficacy rate of colchicine and no development of AA amyloidosis have been reported. Almost 90% of patients fulfilling the EPCC required maintenance therapy and anti-interleukin (IL)-1 drugs were the most frequently used, with the highest efficacy rate (>85% complete response), while Etanercept was less effectively used and discontinued in 65% of patients.Conclusion:Anti-IL-1 drugs are the best maintenance treatment in TRAPS with potential to reverse the most serious disease complications of AA amyloidosis and infertility. Suomessa on paljon verbejä, joiden vartalo päättyy elementtiin -ta-/-tä-. Valtaosa on nomineista johdettuja ns. supistumaverbejä, joissa infinitiivin tunnus on alun perin liittynyt johtimen konsonanttivartaloon; johtimen edellä ollut nominin loppuvokaali on taas säilynyt: kuvata : kuvaan (*kuva-t-tak : *kuva-ta-n > *kuva-δa-n, vrt. kuva), lainata (vrt. laina), tervata (vrt. terva). Supistumaverbityyppi on nykyään erittäin produktiivinen ja siihen on liittynyt paljon myös lainoja, joiden vieras originaali on verbi: vrt. kelvata : kelpaan (vrt. germ. *χelpa-), maalata : maalaan (vrt. muinaisruotsin māla), pestata : pestaan (muinais- ja nykyruotsin fästa). Toinen tyyppi on sellainen, että johdin liittyy konsonanttiseen tai yksi tavuiseen vokaaliseen kantavartaloon. Kiistattomia vanhoja verbikantaisia johdoksia ovat nostaa, vartalo nos-ta- (verbivartalosta nouse-); pistää, vartalo *pis-tä- (verbivartalosta *pise- > pysy-); päästää, vartalo pääs-tä- (verbivartalosta pääse-). Suffiksia voi pitää yhdysperäisenä suffiksina perussuffiksista -ta-/-tä- (ks. Hakulinen 2000: 297). Käsittelen seuraavien verbien etymologioita: 1. hoitaa (hoiva), 2. hyötää, 3. höystää, höistää, 5. kaataa, 6. kostaa, 7. kuristaa, 8. ottaa, 9. pettää, 10. *taistaa, taisto, taistella. Lisäksi käsittelen verbien hyötää ja höystää kantasanaksi katsomani adjektiivin 4. hyvä etymologiaa. Alaviitteissä koskettelen lyhyesti vielä etymologiankannalta verbejä syöksyä/syöstä ja tunkea (alaviite 7, alaviite 13) ja nominia maa (alaviite 10).
