Abstract (sommario):
The youth justice family group conference (FGC) is a statutory decision making process whereby the young person, their family/whanau, state officials and the victim of the offence come together to decide on a response to offending by that young person. The FGC is an integral part of the youth justice system, involving thousands of young people and their families each year. There is a considerable amount of literature available on the youth justice FGC, most notably in regard to the purported restorative justice nature of the process. However, for a legal process which involves so many young people on a daily basis, there is little information available on the due process rights of young people in the FGC. This thesis seeks to remedy this gap in the research knowledge. Firstly, this thesis establishes the theoretical framework for the rights of the young person in the youth justice system. The historical context and theoretical justification for these rights is considered, and the benchmarks for rights coming from international and national human rights standards are identified. A key theoretical issue is the application of rights to the FGC. It is argued that although the FGC differs in format from the adversarial criminal process, it remains a state process involved in resolving a breach of the criminal law, and thus the young person's rights should be safeguarded. Secondly, this thesis evaluates legislation, policy and practice relating to the rights of the young person in the FGC. Three key areas of rights are considered: legal assistance, how the offence is proved, and outcomes of the FGC. Reference is made to practice examples derived from observation of the FGC in two centres in New Zealand. Finally, as the FGC is certain to remain an integral part of the youth justice system, recommendations are made as to how legislation and practice could be improved to better safeguard the rights of young people in this process.

Abstract (sommario):
The present study focuses on the activity of the Young Communist League (Komsomol) to promote the communist project during the so-called Thaw period in the Soviet Union (1953-1964). The term ‘communist project’ describes the complex temporal triangle in which the relevance of the present was rooted in its relationship to the heroic past and the bright future. Young people were supposed to emulate the heroism of previous generations while fighting remnants of the undesired past. This was presented as a precondition for achieving the communist future. The structure of this study reflects the chronology of the communist project. It analyzes the rhetoric used by the Young Communist League to promote the communist project and explores the strategies used to mobilize youth for building communism. The first chapter focuses on the organizational structure of the Komsomol and assesses its readiness for this task. Despite attempts to strengthen horizontal communication and control, streamline administration and reorganize its structure, the Komsomol remained hierarchal and bureaucratic. The second chapter explores the promotion of past heroism in rituals, social practices and the use of public space. The third chapter is also concerned with the past; it describes the Komsomol’s fight against ‘remnants of the past’, primarily religion and deviant behaviour such as hooliganism, heavy drinking and laziness. The final chapter focuses on the Komsomol’s attempts during the Thaw to bring about the future: its efforts in the economy, moral, political and cultural education, and the realm of leisure.

Petersen, Cheryl Marcelle. "Exploring young black persons' narratives about the apartheid past / C.M. Petersen". Thesis, North-West University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/4711.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The extant of available South African qualitative research which investigates issues of the post-apartheid youth appears to be diversified and increasing. A part of this corpus of research, seem to inform on post-apartheid identity formation. This current research explored the narrative forms located in the retellings of the apartheid past by 13 young black South Africans aged between 16 and 21. To this end, 68 different secondary narrative segments were obtained, by means of the analysed transcripts of in-depth interviewing, using a qualitative categorical-content framework. The data analysis yielded 12 themes, wherein the youth identified the primary narrators of the apartheid stories; contextualised settings and circumstances around narratives and explained apartheid social stratifications and treatment of black persons. They also conceptualized their understanding of apartheid laws and enforcement; explained apartheid experienced forms of loss and support; discussed apartheid education; talked about political figures and liberation; disclosed their own feelings about these stories; disclosed the impacts of stories on their own lives; considered the relevance of these narratives; stated what was learnt from it and provided a gauge of their interest in such stories. The findings suggest socially constructed second order narratives of racial hierarchies; marginalising the 'other'; vicarious experiences of affect; the incorporation of the logic of difference and a coexistence of tensions between these stories and present lifestyles. The research has located specific tones, imagery and themes within these narratives, which were duly incorporated in the metastory of this research. Recommendations were made concerning further research to be inclusive of youth from a wider racial and cultural spectrum, as well as investigation into aspects of non-interest and denialism about the apartheid past.

Hoolachan, Jennifer Elizabeth. "An ethnographic exploration of the substance use of young people living in temporary homeless accommodation". Thesis, University of Stirling, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/24142.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The subjects of ‘youth’, ‘substance use’ and ‘homelessness’ are interconnected, but only a relatively small number of studies have examined the relationships between all three components. Literature highlights how homeless substance users are constructed as ‘vulnerable’ – yet ‘deviant’. Furthermore, academics have examined how people manage the ascribed identities of ‘substance user’ and ‘homeless’ as well as that of ‘youth’. According to sociologists, people’s self-identities and actions develop as a consequence of interactions with their socio-spatial worlds. Therefore, it is useful to contextualise the act of substance use within these complex interactions. This thesis explores the meanings and contexts of young, homeless people’s substance use. Data were obtained through an ethnographic study conducted in a homeless hostel over a seven month period in 2013 in which twenty-two young people (aged 16-21) and twenty-seven staff members participated. The majority of data were derived from participant-observation encompassing 200-250 informal interactions with the young people and 100-120 interactions with staff along with observations of people’s actions and descriptions of events and appearances. The field-notes were supplemented by four semi-structured interviews and a focus group, involving a total of eleven young people. Drawing on theories underpinned by symbolic interactionist and phenomenological philosophies, three overarching dimensions of the young people’s experiences were identified as important to their substance use and wider lives. First, the young people engaged in ‘place-making’ actions (including substance use) to personalise spaces within the tightly controlled environment of the hostel. Secondly, substance use was interwoven with the relationships that the young people held with their families, friends and the staff. The ‘pro-drug’ voices of their friends and relatives were arguably stronger than the ‘anti-drug’ voices of the staff. Thirdly, the categories of ‘youth’ and ‘substance user’ were recognised by the participants as pertaining to them, whereas the ‘homeless’ label was relatively meaningless. The thesis concludes that to understand people’s substance use experiences, it is important to consider the socio-spatial contexts within which they are located, particularly when these are temporary.

Lamb, Matthew. "Young Conservatives, Young Socialists and the great youth abstention : youth participation and non-participation in political parties". Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2003. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/518/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is an investigation into participation and non-participation by young people in British political parties. Falling turnout in British elections has lead to concern about the level of popular participation in the political system, especially amongst the young. Those between 18 and 25 are less likely to involve themselves in political activity than any other age group. This thesis argues that political parties and their grassroots members are still vital to British democracy and that the failure of both parties to recruit young members is leading to increasingly aged and inactive parties. Even measuring the extent of youth membership of the main parties is problematic due to a lack of accurate membership figures. The figures available show that whilst neither the Labour nor the Conservative Party has enjoyed unqualified success in recruiting young members, Labour has enjoyed comparative success in increasing its youth membership in the period 1970-2001 both absolutely and as proportion of the total membership. I have argued that whilst there is research on participation and non-participation there is little specific on the particular area of young people and political parties. I have suggested and evaluated competing explanations of this problem and I have been able to develop and test a youth-specific model of participation and non-participation. This model builds on the general incentive model developed by Seyd and Whiteley but provides a more comprehensive, and youth specific, model of both participation and non-participation. This new model builds considerably on our understanding of why young people choose to join, or not join, a political party. However, a static sample only takes me so far. A study of the Labour and Conservative youth organisations also shows that they have contributed to their relative success or failure through popular perceptions of their image and through the relationship with their parent parties. My improved model of participation and non-participation is complemented by a consideration that the mobilisation model contributes to understanding trends in membership. Those youth organisations that are able to recruit actively with support from the parent party are more likely to succeed than those who are not. I have provided a detailed and critical study of the Labour and Conservative youth organisations, the first such study since 1970. From this study I have helped explain the comparative success of the Labour Party and the comparative failure of the Conservative Party in recruiting young members. Both party’s youth organisations suffered from poor perceptions of extremism, infighting and unfashionability at certain times in the period under study which helped deter potential members. These problems were often compounded by a poor relationship between the youth organisation and the parent party. However, whilst, eventually, the Labour Party was able to solve these problems to a certain extent, the Conservative Party has yet to find a solution to its recruitment problems amongst young people.

Abstract (sommario):
Objective: To explore and describe the current transition environment for young people with chronic pain in Canada. Quantitative study: An online survey of nurses working in the pediatric and adult chronic pain setting was conducted to describe the current clinical practices used in both settings to support transition of young people with chronic pain in Canada. Qualitative study: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with young people with chronic pain who had recently transitioned from the pediatric setting to the adult healthcare setting to explore their transition experiences. Conclusions: The findings from these studies suggest that young people with chronic pain have similar transition related needs to other young people with chronic conditions as well as unique challenges. Nurses can have a positive impact on transition outcomes by developing processes and forming networks of clinicians who work with young people with chronic pain in order to improve transition related outcomes.

Brooks-Wilson, Sarah Jane. "Youth justice geographies and convicted young people's mobilities". Thesis, University of York, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/13864/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Currently, there is a gap in knowledge about the context of convicted young people’s youth justice journey making and its treatment. Youth justice orders can break down as a result of absence, with sentence escalation and even custody becoming possible, if problems remain unresolved. Youth justice attendance can be as low as fifty per cent, with over twenty per cent of orders breaking down in some locations. Yet a lack of statistical detail makes it impossible to establish the extent of the problem. Low income households are over-represented in the youth justice population, and such groups can have limited access to transport while experiencing difficulties accessing essential local services. Subsequently, convicted young people’s youth justice journey making and treatment needs to be better understood in order to ensure responses remain proportionate, as per existing agreements. This thesis borrows ideas from the new mobilities paradigm, transposing them into a youth justice context, while remembering well cemented connections with social policy. Two mixed methods case studies will examine convicted young people’s youth justice journey making and treatment in locations where neighbourhood deprivation and youth justice order breakdown rates were at some of the highest in the country. Accessible visual research tools facilitated communication with young people and practitioners about youth justice journey making and absence management, to develop more fluid understandings of convicted young people’s youth justice journey making, and its treatment. The malleability and interconnectedness of journey making, attendance management and service delivery allows this research to make recommendations for national policy, local youth justice systems and individual practice. Importantly, the (re)production of convicted young people’s social inequalities as an unintended consequence of youth justice treatment, suggests the need for mobilities to have an elevated status in the delivery of social policies through youth justice services.

Wood, Jason. "Young people and active citizenship : an investigation". Thesis, De Montfort University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/2086/3234.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The past decade has been witness to a growing concern with the political, moral and social capacity of young people to demonstrate ‘active citizenship’. Alongside the introduction of citizenship education in schools there has been evidence of increased political and public anxiety about how young people integrate within their local communities. All of this has taken place in the context of broader social policy debates about how individuals demonstrate social responsibility in late modern, advanced liberal democracies. This study investigated how young people define and experience active citizenship in their everyday, real world settings. It comprised workshops and focus groups with 93 young people aged 14-16 living in the East Midlands. Using an adaptive theory design, the investigation utilised definitions generated by young people to build an applied theory of active citizenship. Young people in this study defined active citizenship in terms of membership and status, social responsibility and to a lesser extent, political literacy. Through a process of deliberation, they determined six concepts to be most important in thinking about active citizenship. These were ‘rights’; ‘responsibilities’; ‘care for others’; ‘control’; ‘making decisions’, and ‘respect’. These concepts were explored in relation to the everyday experiences of young people. Young people experience active citizenship differently within and between each context of their lives (proximate, community and institutional levels) showing high degrees of related skills and awareness. Whilst communities and institutions offer some opportunities for young people to test and develop citizenship identities, they also present significant barriers.

Abstract (sommario):

The main aim of this work is to discover gender differences in value orientation of today's youth, and to analyze developmental changes and ethnicity in terms of the same. The research is based on the assumption that a person’s gender identity influences his or her value orientation, thus gender stereotypes are adopted also on the level of what is preferred by the individual, or seen as important in life.

In the research participated 118 young people from the Gymnasium in Subotica. The data about gender identity and value orientation was collected by a questionnaire, which was created in favour of this research. In the first part the questionnaire offered a list of gender related traits in order to define the participant’s gender identity. The second part was a list of opposite values, which was adopted from Jensen’s research.

The results confirm the general findings of Jensen and reveal that there is significant gender effect present in adolescent’s value orientation in case of eight opposite values. It also highlights that age difference between the participants doesn’t contribute significantly to a higher or lower visible gender difference in value orientation, but conversely it shows that ethnic difference is an important factor in it.

Laliberte, Shari. "Young people, socioeconomic processes, and youth mental health promotion". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/54590.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Little is known regarding current relational dynamics among young people, their mental health, and socio-economic processes and implications for mental health promotion initiatives. Social praxis, underpinned by a Hegelian-Marxist historical-dialectical perspective was used to deepen understanding regarding ways that young people’s socio-economic environments are influencing their mental health, their processes of seeking to realize their mental health, and mental health promotion from a socio-economic perspective. The experiences of 30 diverse young people between the ages of 15 and 28 years were explored and compared to ways that socio-economic determinants of mental health are addressed within provincial mental health policy. There were four central findings in this study. First, participant reflections indicated eight inter-related mental health needs as having relevance in this current socio-economic context. Second, needs and affective experiences are important sites for deepening understanding regarding the inter-relation between young people’s mental health and socio-economic processes. Participant reflections illustrate the relational nature of mental health. They show how mental health is a phenomenon that emerges from the inter-relation between young people and the socio-economic processes that young people participate in within their day-to-day lives. Affective states indicate the degree to which a young person’s mental health needs are met, and play an inter-related role with socio-economic processes in influencing young people’s engagement in socio-economic processes as they seek to realize their needs. Third, there are several key ways that individualistic, wealth-oriented capitalist socio-economic practices and processes threaten young people’s mental health needs across the socio-economic spectrum. Fourth, young people’s control over realizing their mental health needs is limited by the ways they are oriented to seeking realization of their mental health within the inner and inter-personal contexts of their lives, despite the important role that socio-economic processes play in enabling their needs. A close reading of mental health policies shows their positioning in support of capitalist socio-economic processes. This limits the potential of mental health promotion in supporting synergistic relations between young people and socio-economic processes in realizing young people’s mental health. Based on insights gained from this study, I propose multi-level approaches for future praxis-oriented mental health promotion initiatives.

Thomas, Reena Anne Elizabeth. "The social travel patterns of youth and young adults". Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/32364.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
Young people between the ages of sixteen and twenty-nine represent one-third of transit riders in Canada and over half of transit riders in the Greater Vancouver Regional District. They socialize in different places, and at different times of day, from children or adults. Because they are often left out of transportation studies involving children or adults, researchers know little about the way in which young people travel. Twenty-one youth and young adults from Vancouver and Surrey participated in this exploratory study to determine the ways in which transportation affected their social travel patterns. Social network mapping and focus groups with youth aged 17-21 and young adults aged 22-25 revealed the constraints that young people face when they travel for social purposes. Young people tend to socialize in the evening and at night, when transit frequency and reliability are low. Extensive planning and organization of trips means that young people socialize in a few small social activity corridors, face long travel distances to the residential areas of the region, and rarely travel spontaneously. Their ability to use other alternative transportation modes, such as cycling and walking, is limited by long travel distances and consistently rainy weather for six months of the year. Young people also make extreme adjustments to their social lives, schedules and personal safety in order to take transit in the evening and at night. Although affordability is a significant barrier to car ownership, young people in the GVRD are also increasingly aware of urban planning and environmental issues, making them reluctant to rely on cars. Many choose transit as their preferred mode of transportation, and would like to continue to use transit in the future. This study contributed to an understanding of the social travel patterns of youth and young adults, and revealed the significance of this demographic in planning transit services. However, because of the small sample size, future research might include quantitative surveys of youth and young adults in the GVRD to clarify and reinforce their social travel patterns.

Abstract (sommario):
With nearly three-quarters of young people leaving custody re-offending within a year, it is clear that despite a decade of wide-ranging reforms and substantial investment, the youth justice system is still no closer to finding an adequate solution to the problem of young custody-leavers' high levels of re-offending. This thesis argues that at least part of the reason for this lies in the conceptions of subjectivity constructed by the dominant discourses in contemporary youth justice policy.

Huq, Rupa. "Too much too young : British youth culture in the 1990s". Thesis, University of East London, 1999. http://roar.uel.ac.uk/1287/.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
The study of youth culture in Britain, after a fertile period in the 1 970s, underwent a fallow stretch in the 1980s. By the 1990s it was being claimed from some quarters that youth culture had ceased to exist. This thesis presents the results of a study of various aspects of contemporary youth culture undertaken in Britain and France with the mixed methodologies of textual secondary source analysis, ethnographic participant observation, semi-structured interviewing and quantitative survey techniques. The central aim was to determine whether and in what forms youth culture exists in contemporary times and to redress some of the earlier imbalances in research on this subject in doing so. There are nine main findings. The first three are concerned with matters of theory and method, the remainder with the empirical work presented in the thesis: 1. It is more useful to draw on several theoretical approaches rather than constrict oneself to singular explanations of 'grand theory.' 2. Furthermore, 'theory' alone is not enough: ethnography is a key instrument for examining youth culture. 3. The exclusively class-based explanations offered by existing British subcultural studies are increasingly untenable given the transient, non-linear youth cultural forms of today. 4. Second generation hybridic British Asian youth cultures, long ignored by subculturalists, are a crucial expanding area. 5. Youth are not simply an 'urban species'; a rich under-researched suburban youth culture also exists, and is worthy of serious study. 6. Our considerations of youth culture should look beyond British shores to parallels with other countries, with whom British youth have many similarities. The expressive postcolonial cultures of French youth are one example, through which we can see both parallels with the British experience, and that there is some evidence for an emergent 'pan European youth culture'. 7. The above developments unfold despite governments' attempts at preserving 'national culture.' 8. Pop music can no longer be seen as a synonym for youth culture. 9. Reports of youth culture's death have been greatly exaggerated. It may not exist as previously conceptualised but it is taking on multiple, shifting meanings in an ageing world.

Philip, Kate. "New perspectives on mentoring : young people, youth work and adults". Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 1997. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=124205.

Abstract (sommario):
This study sets out to examine the process of mentoring in relation to young people and youth work. It takes a qualitative approach to examining mentoring from the perspectives of the participants, both young people and adults. Techniques employed include group interviews, and in-depth individual interviews. The investigation focuses on informal mentoring processes within youth settings. The predominance of the 'classic' model of mentoring is challenged as are the underlying constructions of young people as 'unfinished'. A purposive sample was drawn from a wide range of rural and urban youth groups in the North East of Scotland. 200 young people took part in a series of group interviews (n=120 young women, n=80 young men). A sub-sample of 30 was drawn from this and interviewed individually. 21 from the sub-sample were interviewed again, approximately six months apart. A further sample of 30 adults was interviewed, 13 of whom had been identified by young people while 17 were youth workers whose remit included a mentoring element. Flexible interview frameworks were used as a guide for discussion and the interviews were largely informal and unstructured. From these interviews a number of forms of mentoring were identified. These suggest that young people experience a diversity of styles of mentoring. Related to this a number of ecological factors (e.g. gender identity, early pregnancy) influence these different forms. Common to both these dimensions were distinctive processes of mentoring which were considered to be salient by both young people and adults. Thus it is proposed that mentoring is more accurately described as a set of processes within a relationship rather than a relationship per se. These processes in turn are intimately linked to the outcomes of mentoring which contribute to a unique form of cultural capital (Bourdieu, 1973). An attempt is made to theorise mentoring more adequately and in particular to take account of the perceptions and perspectives of mentees and mentors.

Abstract (sommario):
In Scotland, current policy aims to produce work ready young people with relevant enterprise and employment skills. However, many are caught in a repetitive cycle of short term work placements with large numbers of young people still not at work or in education. Accordingly, this study was concerned with social capital in respect of young people’s outcomes from engaging with a youth work project, that was designed to encourage enterprise and employability skills. Using qualitative data drawn from a single site case study, this research develops an understanding of the extent to which different forms of social capital influenced young people’s outcomes. The thesis sets out a theoretical position that draws from Archer’s understanding of critical realism and social capital theory based on the works of Putnam, Coleman and Bourdieu. This approach suggests that the complex interactions between social structures, identities, material resources and cultural forms, enable or inhibit the emergence of social capital practices. An action research approach was applied and empirical work was based on observations and reflections of young people participating in an enterprise challenge. Data were collected via questionnaires, professional discussions and the observations and analysis of relevant documents. Overall findings illustrate the emergence of bonding, bridging and linking social capital in addition to identity, economic and cultural capital developments. However, changes within social structure were the hardest to detect. Whilst there are indicators of young people’s improved outcomes, findings suggest that conditioned socio-cultural stereotypes in respect of gender and class may be limiting opportunities. Shared reflexive practices and linking social capital may however provide opportunities to disrupt, and create new pathways, but should be treated with caution. Youth workers can develop and extend the reach of young people’s social capital practices and the thesis concludes by presenting a set of general recommendations that might serve to facilitate change.

Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is concerned with issues relating to young people, identity and physical culture, and attempts to highlight how the comelex structure of young people's social experiences can influence their constructions of self. It follows a number of calls by various researchers for a multi-dimensional approach to the study of youth lifestyles (e. g. Hendry et al, 1996), and one that, while acknowledging societal influences on young people's practices, does not deny their potential to act agentically (e. g. Christensen & James, 2000). As such, taking into account the concerns expressed over the increasing pressures facing young people in contemporary society, and the problematisation of various youth behaviours, it examines the extent to which young people shape and are shaped by their experiences in a number of interrelating social contexts. The research upon which this account is based focuses on a notion of identity that is ephemeral, reflexive, and embodied, and examines the experiences of young people in five intersecting social sites that were identified from the literature as important contexts for individuals' constructions of identities: family, peers, school, media, and physical culture. These social arenas are likened to Bourdieu's notion of fields, and are perceived to be structured spaces in which the development of an appropriate habitus and the possession of relevant capital can help to determine an individual's practice and position within them. Data were generated through a series of focus group discussions with four groups of five young people (ten boys and ten girls) from three schools in tile Midlands. The young people were selected from a larger sample that had been surveyed and clustered in relation to their motivation to physical activity, and each group comprised an individual from each cluster. The focus group sessions involved semi-structured conversations in addition to a program of activity-based research tasks, and culminated in the creation of individual identity posters. The taped conversations and material infonnation generated through the focus group sessions were then collated, and a grounded theory approach was employed in the thematic analysis of tile data. A number of analytic strategies such as coding, memos, and conceptual mapping were utilised within this process, and, in association with a consideration of tile conceptual tools of field, habitus, practice, and capital, contributed to the development of theory. Within tile thesis, the five main analysis chapters presented the key themes in relation to each field, and highlighted the identity i work that the participants engaged in within each of these social sites. The chapters. map out the structure and practices of each field, and examine their influences on the young people's attempts to construct understandings of self. The final chapter of the thesis then attempts to summarise the findings of these previous analysis chapters, and examine them in relation to the central research questions that guided and underpinned the study. As such, the repetition of core themes, such as the management and presentation of self, a desire for autonomy and respect, and a tension within a dialect of conforinity and resistance, were identified as significant aspects of young people's social practices. Additionally, the evident overlaps between the different contexts indicated the complex configuration of fields within the experiences of young people. In relation to this issue, the final chapter focuses in particular on how the fields configured for the young people in relation to the field of physical culture, as this was identified in the study as a primary site for the construction of embodied identities. Having presented these key findings, the thesis concludes with a discussion of the implications for those working with and for young people, and for the design and implementation of youth policies, particularly in relation to the area of physical activity.

Abstract (sommario):
In the early twenty first century, the mobile phone plays an integral role in helping young people shape their identity and achieve social goals. This means that designers of mobile phones are not only creating an artefact that will have a functional purpose for the end user, but one that will be saturated with cultural meanings. In response, the research conducted for this thesis aims to investigate the use of mobile phones in youth cultures so the social and cultural intricacies of interactions can be understood. Consistent with a user centred design approach, the insights from the user study are applied to the development of new technology. The result is the development of The Swarm; a mobile phone prototype that meets the specific social and cultural needs of the young users in the study. Integral to this is the development of a methodological approach that embeds cultural theory within Human Computer Interaction and more specifically, the user centred design process.

Lau, Siu Mei. "Housing discourses of young people in Hong Kong". HKBU Institutional Repository, 2017. https://repository.hkbu.edu.hk/etd_oa/416.

Testo completo
Abstract (sommario):
This thesis is a critical discourse study that explores the housing discourses of young people in Hong Kong which are premised on power relations throughout the process of discourse construction. Young people are increasingly being marginalised. Their housing plight given the housing situation and formation of housing discourses of young people in Hong Kong has yet to be explored. My original contribution to knowledge is the application of a critical discourse analysis to housing discourse studies on young people through the articulation of a number of discourses under structurally and agency-oriented theme. This study adopts social constructionism as the theoretical and conceptual foundation for the conceptualisation and identification of housing discourses of young people. The research design is qualitative in nature, and the data analysis draws on theoretical perspectives from social constructionism, and housing and critical theories. Specifically, the dialectical-relational approach of Norman Fairclough on critical discourse analysis is applied. To examine the housing discourses of young people in Hong Kong, two types of discourses are examined. The first type is housing discourse about young people (i.e. 'societal housing discourses'), which is based on examining three major housing policy documents (1987, 1998, and 2014) and 703 newspaper articles from 2005 to 2015. The second type is housing discourse by young people (i.e. 'young people housing discourse'), which is based on 32 semi-structured interviews with young people between 18 and 34 years old. All data are coded and analysed by using MAXqda software, which is designed for qualitative data analysis. A number of housing discourses that have been circulating in Hong Kong have been identified. The study shows that young people are in the same social context but subject to different inferences in discourse. The interviewed respondents attempt to recontextualise societal housing discourses, whereas the young people housing discourses are characterised by high interdiscursivity. However, a new genre, discourse and style may trigger social changes. Among the many discourses, the housing discourses of young people in Hong Kong can further divided into three categories, namely 'overlapping discourse', 'unique societal housing discourse' and 'unique young people housing discourse'. 'Overlapping discourse' refers to discourses that can be found in both societal and young people housing discourse. The other two categories are discourses can be found in either societal or young people housing discourse. Such categorisation implies young people adopted different discursive strategies. It shows, on the one hand, young people draw directly from societal housing discourses. On the other hand, young people draw from societal housing discourses and produce a new discourse as a result. Although difficult, it is still possible for young people to voice their needs under mainstream discourses. It is anticipated that this study will facilitate future research on critical discourse studies in housing and the examination of the order of discourses among the different groups of people in Asia where society is changing at a quick pace.
