Fetal plasma alanine disposal rate (DR) and decarboxylation rate were measured at 132 +/- 1 days gestation in nine fetal lambs infused with L-[1-14C]alanine via a brachial vein. In five experiments, L-[1-13C]alanine was added to the infusate. Using L-[1-14C]alanine, we found mean DR to be 15.5 +/- 1.8 mumol.min-1 . kg-1. DR was significantly correlated to both arterial plasma alanine and whole blood lactate concentrations. Placental uptake of fetal plasma alanine accounted for 19 +/- 4% of DR. These variations, measured directly on atmospheric samples, or in independently-dated organic material such as tree rings, supply data essential for the calibration of dynamic models of the global carbon cycle. Short variations in the production rate of atmospheric 14C are strongly attenuated in the relatively large atmospheric CO2 reservoir. In-situ production of 14C should be negligible for ages up to 80 ka bp. Background problems in AMS dating are more likely attributable to contamination of very small samples.

Separate experiments were conducted at four environments (site-years) for N and three environments for seeding rate in South Dakota. In three of the four environments, the highest N rate increased seed yield by 30 to 60% compared to the control. The increase in seed yield with increasing N rate was linear in a high yielding environment and quadratic in a low yielding environment. Increasing seeding rate increased plant stands but had inconsistent impacts on seed yield depending on location and year. Seed oil concentration ranged from 149 to 350 g kg−1, was inversely related to N rate but was not influenced by seeding rate.

The model is mis-specified whenever we have used the restricted panel data model. We have derived the results by employing the unrestricted panel data model. Impact of road, internet users and total electricity production on the level of GDP as well as on the level of PCGDP is highest for India among the all SAARC countries. India has also the highest rate of growth of GDP over the entire period. Rate of growth of PCGDP is highest for Sri Lanka followed by India.

Anaemia is defined by the World Health Organization as a reduction of the haemoglobin concentration to less than 130 g/litre (males) or less than 120 g/litre (females). It is a common problem, with a prevalence around 3% for middle-aged men and 14% for middle-aged women in the United Kingdom, and is seen more frequently with age. There is a much greater prevalence in the developing world. Anaemia can be caused by the defective production of red cells or an increased rate of loss of cells, either by bleeding or premature destruction (haemolysis). The causes of defective production of red cells include (1) deficiency of key haematinics, including iron, vitamin B12, or folate; (2) anaemia of chronic disease; (3) reduced erythropoietin production typically seen in chronic kidney disease; and (4) primary diseases of the bone marrow. Haemolytic anaemias may be classified as either genetic or acquired. The key issues are to determine the degree of disability caused by the anaemia and hence how quickly treatment must be started, and the cause of the anaemia. The main causes of anaemia can usefully be classified according to the associated red cell morphological changes: (1) hypochromic, microcytic—including iron deficiency (the commonest cause of anaemia) and thalassaemia (common in some populations); (2) normochromic, macrocytic—vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, alcohol, and myelodysplasia; (3) polychromatophilic, macrocytic—haemolysis; (4) normochromic, normocytic—chronic disorders, renal failure, and diseases of the bone marrow; and (5) leucoerythroblastic—myelofibrosis, leukaemia, and metastatic carcinoma. The reticulocyte count also provides a good way of thinking about the underlying cause of anaemia—whether due to defective production or excess consumption of red cells.

Aspergillus species are ubiquitous fungi found in the environment worldwide. The most common Aspergillus species causing diseases in humans are A. fumigatus, A. flavus, A. niger, and A. terreus. However, species causing human infections are also depending on human immune status. Host immune status and previous underlying diseases are important factors leading to different clinical manifestations and different disease spectra of Aspergillus infections. The most severe form of Aspergillus infections is invasive aspergillosis in human tissue, especially invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA), which has high morbidity and mortality in immunocompromised patients. ICU patients with influenza infections and COVID-19 infections are recently risk factors of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis. New diagnostic criteria include galactomannan antigen assays, nucleic acid amplification assays, and lateral flow assays for early and accurate diagnosis. Voriconazole and the newest azole, isavuconazole, are antifungals of choice in IPA. Nevertheless, azole-resistant Aspergillus strains are increasing throughout the world. The etiology and spreading of azole-resistant Aspergillus strains may originate from the widespread use of fungicides in agriculture, leading to the selective pressure of azole-resistant strains. Therefore, there is a necessity to screen Aspergillus antifungal susceptibility patterns for choosing an appropriate antifungal agent to treat these invasive infections. In addition, mutations in an ergosterol-producing enzyme, i.e., lanosterol 14-α demethylase, could lead to azole-resistant strains. As a result, the detection of these mutations would predict the resistance to azole agents. Although many novel azole agents have been developed for invasive Aspergillus infections, the rate of novel antifungal discovery is still limited. Therefore, better diagnostic criteria and extensive antifungal resistant Aspergillus screening would guide us to better manage invasive Aspergillus infections with our existing limited resources.

Streszczenie:
The conformational dynamics and hydration of a DNA 14-mer containing the consensus Pribnow box sequence TATAAT have been measured using rotating frame T1 measurements and NOESY and ROESY in water. The H2 proton resonances of adenines show fast intermediate exchange behavior which can be attributed to a conformational transition that affects the distances between H2 protons of neighboring adenine residues, both sequential and cross-strand. The relaxation rate constant of the transition was measured at 4000s-1 at 25°C. Bound water close to the H2 proton of adenines was observed with residence times of >lns. At low temperature (5°C), the Pribnow box is in a closed state in which hydration water in the minor groove is tightly bound. At higher temperatures, the conformation opens up as judged by the increase in separation between sequential H2 protons of adenines and water exchanges freely from the minor groove. The conformational transition and the altered hydration pattern may be related to promoter function. The control of gene expression in procaryotes depends on the specific recognition by RNA polymerase of a six base-pair sequence (consensus: TTGACA) located at -35 from the transcription site, and a second one, named the Pribnow box (consensus: TATAAT) at about 10 base-pairs upstream the initiation site (Rosenberg and Court, 1979). It has been shown (Hawley and McClure, 1983) that strong promoters exhibit a high degree of homology with the consensus sequences, separated by an optimum consensus spacer length of 17 base pairs. The strength of a promoter depends on, among other thing, the rate of the initiation of transcription. This rate depends on the product between the thermodynamic and kinetic constants KB and k2 (McClure, 1980). The initial binding of RNA polymerase to the promoter results in the formation of a transcriptionally inactive ‘closed’ complex, characterized by the association constant KB. Isomerization to the active ‘open’ complex then occurs, and is characterized by the first order rate constant k2. Hence, the frequency of transcription initiation depends both on the strength of the polymerase-promoter interaction, and the ease with which this complex can isomerize to the productive state. Both of these events are likely to depend on the physical properties of the promoter.

<em>Abstract</em>.—In 2006, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ Muskellunge <em>Esox masquinongy </em>propagation program underwent a series of strategic modifications aimed at protecting the genetic integrity of native populations and ensuring long-term sustainability of Muskellunge fisheries in Wisconsin. In addition to refined broodstock management strategies, mating and rearing strategies were refined to minimize changes in genetic diversity throughout the propagation process. To evaluate this goal, two specific criteria were developed. First, allele frequencies should not differ between the progeny life stages and the broodstock. Second, ≥95% of rare alleles found in the broodstock (alleles present at frequencies ≤5%) should be conserved within the progeny. Samples were collected during 2012 and 2013 at Governor Tommy Thompson Hatchery (GTH) and Art Oehmcke Hatchery (AOH) and were analyzed at 14 microsatellite loci. Overall, conservation of genetic diversity levels between life stages predicted by the prescribed changes to the propagation program was apparent and likely represented major improvements over historical techniques. Nevertheless, current results identified areas for further refinement. At each hatchery, at least one of the two specific criteria was met during both years. For example, AOH conserved more than 95% of rare alleles in both production years, but significant shifts in allele frequencies were observed during both years for the pooled fingerling sample and in the majority of individual rearing pond comparisons. The Governor Tommy Thompson state fish hatchery consistently demonstrated stability in allele frequencies among life stages during both years of the study. However, during 2013, less than 95% of the rare alleles present in the GTH broodstock were conserved in the progeny. Differences identified in the gamete collection protocols, specifically standardization of egg volume from each parental pairing (reducing variance in family size), will improve conservation of genetic diversity among life stages at both hatcheries.

Information technology is today transforming all aspects of our lives — how we work, shop, play and learn. It is transforming our economic infrastructure — revolutionizing methods of supply, production, distribution, marketing, service, and management. This represents nothing less than a fundamental redesign of the entire supply chains of most industries and indeed a fundamental restructuring of many industries themselves. The potential long-term impact of information technology represents an economic and social transition as fundamental as the shift from rural agriculture to urban industry 200 years ago, during the first Industrial Revolution. Yet today we have a problem — a big problem! Chief information officers (CIOs) are finding themselves increasingly under fire for the perceived lack of value from ever-growing investments in information technology (IT) — investments that in the U.S. now represent close to 50% of companies’ new capital investment and a significant portion of their operating expense. Our investments in technology are not being consistently translated into business value. The link to business results is not clear. It is hard to demonstrate how investments in IT, or in producing information translate into economic value. A 1996 U.S. survey by the Standish Group found 73% of IT projects were cancelled, over budget or late, with 31% being cancelled. Project failures cost an estimated $145 billion. This figure does not include the loss of anticipated business benefits, likely amounting to trillions of dollars. More recent studies confirm that project failures are continuing to occur at a similar rate, and this applies to more recent ERP, e-Commerce, Supply Chain Management and Customer Relationship Management projects as well as more traditional projects.

Streszczenie:
Now that we have discussed how assemblages of marine soft sediments are structured, we need to consider functional aspects. There are a few main interrelationships that need to be discussed here— inter- and intraspecific competition, feeding and predator–prey interactions, the production of biomass, and the production and delivery of recruiting stages. Other functional aspects, such as the effects of pathogens and parasites and the benefits of association (mutualism, parasitism, symbiosis, etc.) are of less importance in the present discussion. By function we mean the rate processes (i.e. those involving time) that either affect (extrinsic processes) or are inside (intrinsic processes and responses) the organisms that live in sediments. Hence these include primary and secondary production and processes that are mitigated by the organisms that live in sediments, such as nutrient and contaminant fluxes into and out of the sediment. We begin with the historical development of the field since such aspects are often overlooked in these days of electronic searches for references. Functional studies of ecosystems really began with Lindeman´s classic paper (1942) on trophic dynamics. Rather than regarding food merely as particulate matter, Lindeman expressed it in terms of the energy it contained, thereby enabling comparisons to be made between different systems. For example, 1 g of the bivalve Ensis is not equivalent in food value to 1 g of the planktonic copepod Calanus, so the two animals cannot be compared in terms of weight, but they can be compared in terms of the energy units that each gram dry weight contains. The energy unit originally used was the calorie, but this has now been superseded by the joule (J), 1 calorie being equivalent to 4.2 joules. Ensis contains 14 654 J g-1 dry wt and Calanus 30 982 J g-1 dry wt. The basic trophic system is well understood and can be summarized as we showed earlier in Fig. I.8 which gives the links between various trophic levels and the role of competition, organic matter transport, and resource partitioning. In systems fuelled by photosynthesis (so excluding the chemosynthetic deep-sea vent systems), the primary source of energy for any community is sunlight, which is fixed and stored in plant material, which thus constitutes the first trophic level in the ecosystem.

available in liquid, viscous, and powdered form on the market of the Russian Federation, there are certain difficulties with their dosage and uniform distribution in silage feeds. This is especially important for preservatives, which are used in small doses. Abroad, this issue is solved by using applicators which allow to make low doses of preservatives in the range of 125-250 ml/t uniformly [1]. In our country, to increase uniformity of preservatives distribution, water is usually added to a small amount of preservatives and they are applied by column centrifugal or diaphragm pumps at the rat

Prostacyclin (PGI2) production in rat aortic rings incubated in Tris-buffer decreases with time.It has been shown that this decrease is not dependent on the total arachidonate concentration in the arterial lipids, and it has been suggested that it may be due to a partial enzymatic inactivation of cyclooxygenase and / or PGI2-synthethase. However, there is a possibility that although the total l-14C-arachidonate (AA*) incorporation increases with exhaustion, this incorporation into the different lipid fractions may be different before and after the exhaustion process. In this study we evaluate t

An experimental study is under way to assess the performance of solid-oxide cells operating in the steam electrolysis mode for hydrogen production over a temperature range of 800 to 900°C. Results presented in this paper were obtained from a ten-cell planar electrolysis stack, with an active area of 64 cm2 per cell. The electrolysis cells are electrolyte-supported, with scandia-stabilized zirconia electrolytes (∼140 μm thick), nickel-cermet steam/hydrogen electrodes, and manganite air-side electrodes. The metallic interconnect plates are fabricated from ferritic stainless steel. The experiment

This paper presents two different soot production models and their predictions in a practical combustion chamber. These predictions are compared with detailed internal measurements of soot concentration by probe sampling. Both models solve two additional transport equations for soot mass concentration and number density, and incorporate representations of source terms for particle nucleation, surface growth, coagulation and oxidation. In one approach these rates are inferred from soot property measurements in a confined turbulent jet flame, and in the other from a flamelet-based approach emplo

Environmental temperature is a key factor driving various biological processes, including immune defenses and host-pathogen interactions. Here, we evaluated the effects of environmental temperature on the pathogenicity of the emerging fungus, Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal), using controlled laboratory experiments, and measured components of host immune defense to identify regulating mechanisms. We found that adult and juvenile Notophthalmus viridescens died faster due to Bsal chytridiomycosis at 14 ºC than at 6 and 22 ºC. Pathogen replication rates, total available proteins on the sk
