ABSTRACT
This experiment was carried out between 2018 and 2019 at the experimental site of National Cereals Research Institute’s identified hot spot (Edozhigi) for Africa rice gall midge (0rseolia oryzivora) infestation in Nigeria. Edozhigi in Niger State is within the southern Guinea savanna agro-ecological zone at latitude 09°45' N, longitude 06°07' E, to test integrated inluence of habitat manipulation, lambda-cyhalothrin and carbofuran on population dynamics of 0. oryzivora in relation to its parasitoids on rice. The treatments were arranged in split-plot and laid out in a RCBD with

Orseolia oryzivora is a major insect pest of rice in Burkina Faso. This study aimed at assessing the incidence of this pest on an integrated irrigated rice cropping system in Bama, western Burkina Faso. The work was carried out during two consecutive wet cropping seasons, 2020 and 2021. The experiment was conducted using a randomized split-plot design in a latice design. The main plots (MP) were divided into secondary plots, made up of a combination of two factors: two rice varieties (FKR64 and Orylux6) and four types of crop management before rice (Mucuna, cowpea forage, organic matter and a

AbstractHost range experiments and field sampling in Nigeria produced no evidence that African rice gall midge, Orseolia oryzivora Harris – Gagné, can develop on plants other than Oryza species. Sampling in three outbreak areas during 1994 showed that the insect's annual cycle varied according to the agroecological zone and rice cropping pattern. In the humid forest zone, Orseolia oryzivora persisted through the short dry season on ratoons of cultivated rice Oryza sativa at a rainfed site and on dry season rice crops at an irrigated one. AbstractField sampling of grasses growing in and near rice fields at 12 sites in Nigeria during April/May 1994 recorded the presence of galls on Paspalum scrobiculatumat densities of up to 10.9 galls per m2. These galls were induced by Orseolia bonzii Harris, sp. n., which is described. This species is morphologically close to, but distinct from, the African rice gall midge, Orseolia oryzivora Harris & Gagné, with which it has been confused in earlier studies of that pest species. Orseolia oryzivora Harris and Gagné is an important insect pest of rice in many African countries. Its infestation could result in total crop failure in endemic areas. The use of bio-control agents in the management of the pest is currently attracting the attention of researchers. Two parasitoids; Platygaster diplosisae an endoparasitoid and Aprostocetus procerae an ectoparasitoid have been found to parasitize a large proportion of O. oryzivora. The problem of how to conserve small and declining populations is currently receiving considerable attention in the ecological literature, particularly through the theoretical development of conservation biology and its application to endangered species conservation. This is true despite basic information on the natural history of most endangered species being very limited; not only for species that are very rare, elusive or living in remote areas, but also for species which occupy more accessible habitat (i.e. cultivated areas), such as the Java sparrow (Padda oryzivora).
