Rừng Mã Đà là một trong những khu bảo tồn quan trọng nhất tại Việt Nam, có thảm thực vật dày đặc. Đây là nguyên liệu cung cấp dinh dưỡng cho những nhóm nấm mốc có khả năng sinh tổng hợp enzyme cellulase, do hệ nấm mốc này tham gia vào chu trình carbon thông qua hoạt động phân giải cellulose.
