Roman mortars from the industrial archaeological site of Tróia (Portugal) have been studied by means of chemical, mineralogical and microstructural analysis. The mortars are calcitic aerial lime mortars differing in the type and proportion of aggregates used, including crushed carbonaceous rocks (limestone and dolomite), siliceous sand and crushed ceramics. The results show that although these mortars have been subjected to a very aggressive environment they are still in a very good state of conservation.

The remains of Vindonissa, the Roman legionary camp in Switzerland, have been the subject of extensive archaeological studies. Knowledge of the building time plays a role in reconstructions of the history of this site. We radiocarbon dated mortar samples selected from one of the Roman monuments (Westtor) as well as a nearby Medieval monastery. 14C ages obtained on the first fraction and second fraction of very short dissolution appear close to the expected Roman age of ∼2000 BP, while the monastery is dated to historic times, after AD 1308.

The 'Rozafa' fortress, the historical and symbolic centre of Shkodra, Albania, is the most important monument located on the hill at the ‘entrance’ of the city. The original old town is made of the different neighbourhoods around the fortress, with dwellings built on top of the ruins of the Illyrian, Roman-Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman walls.
