The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of an Indoor Aquatic Centre for the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole. The main problem was to establish the minimum aquatic facilities an Indoor Aquatic Centre must have, to be able to host National and International aquatic events. The sub problems identified to address the main problem were as follows: - Should accommodation be available at the Indoor Aquatic Centre? - Should medical facilities be available at the Indoor Aquatic Centre? - Should there be a gymnasium at the Indoor Aquatic Centre? - Should there be food malls available at the Indoor Aquatic Centre? - Will sports tourism in the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole benefit from an Indoor Aquatic Centre? In this study the researcher discusses current tourism opportunities, possible sports tourism opportunities and the current aquatic facilities the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole has to offer. From the discussion regarding these issues it was found that the metropole do offer many attraction opportunities including the following: - Adventure and Sport; - Agriculture; - Arts and Culture; - Business and Conferencing; - Coastal and Beaches; - Entertainment and Shopping; - Historical; - Wild Life and Nature. Adventure and Sport attractions contribute to sports tourism in the metropole and an Indoor Aquatic Centre could enable the metropole to improve sports tourism figures to the metropole. Sports tourism is defined as any tourism that is linked with a sports event. The conclusion can be made that the main initiative for sports tourism is to host a major sporting event to attract tourists. Adding other tourist attractions makes the destination more attractive. It is also important that the community is educated and informed about sports tourism so that the tourist and the community benefits from the event. Indoor Aquatic Centres found in countries like Australia, Canada, Europe, Russia, The Far East, United Kingdom and the United States of America, were discussed to identify the minimum requirements for an Indoor Aquatic Centre. The literature study has shown that the Indoor Aquatic Centre should be a multi purpose centre with a minimum of two heated pools and leisure facilities included. This will enable the centre to generate different streams of income to enhance sustainability. The aquatic centre should also be designed to host National and International events, but not necessarily for Olympic Games events. An empirical study was done to see if the respondents agree on the minimum requirements for an Indoor Aquatic Centre, identified by the literature study and if they agree that sports tourism within the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropole will benefit from an Indoor Aquatic Centre. The conclusion of the empirical study is that the respondents’ view correlate with the information found during the literature study regarding the minimum requirements for an Indoor Aquatic Centre listed as follows: - The minimum number of heated pools are two consisting of a fifty metre ten lane pool and a twenty five metre ten lane pool; - A food mall that consists of a restaurant, fast food stalls and a food store; - Medical facilities, conference facilities, gymnasium and other leisure facilities must also be available; - Accommodation facilities must be available and consists of two and three bedroom fully serviced apartments; - The Indoor Aquatic centre must be able to have seating for 2000 people and parking for 1000 vehicles. The study has addressed the main problem and the sub problems, but further research needs to be conducted regarding the funding of the Indoor Aquatic Centre as this issue was not successfully addressed. More information is needed regarding the different ways of funding and who the stakeholders should be in this process.

Syftet med vår studie är att skapa förståelse för barns uppfattningar och upplevelser av elevinflytande i fritidshemmets verksamhet samt att få en förståelse för hur pedagoger anser att de arbetar med elevinflytande i deras verksamhet. Vi besökte två olika skolor på två olika platser i Skåne. De pedagoger och elever som vi hade med i vår undersökning arbetar och studerar i årskurserna tre till fem. Genom att använda oss av metoder som observationer och intervjuer har pedagoger och elever gett oss svar på hur elevinflytande fungerar i deras fritidsverksamheter. De teoretiska utgångspunkter vi kommer att utgå från är elevinflytande, informellt och formellt elevinflytande, makt och inflytande samt Deweys ”learning by doing” och Vygotskijs ”proximala utvecklingszon”. Resultaten visade att pedagoger arbetar aktivt med att låta eleverna få påverka innehållet i verksamheten. Vad som tydde på elevinflytande var att pedagoger justerade olika aktiviteter efter elevers intresse. Vi märkte tydligt att elever/barn inte kräver att få bestämma, utan att de tyckte om när de vuxna tog initiativ och ansvar över vad som skulle ske på fritids.

In 2008, 75% of municipal sport and recreation facilities in South Africa were underutilised, while 62% of these facilities were reported to be poorly managed (SRIMP, 2008). A possible reason for these reported findings can be the lack of managerial skills. However, Goslin (2003:39) mentions that little research on recreation management and education has been done in South Africa, which highlights the increasing need for knowledge to establish and maintain future management practices (Goslin, 2003:40). Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the management competencies applied by recreation managers for effective management of local community centres. In addition, this study compares the gaps between the recreation managers’ qualifications and the requirements for successfully providing the public with quality recreation opportunities in community centres. A qualitative method was applied as a practical guide for the research. The seven regional recreation managers of the City of Johannesburg were selected for the case study. The sample size (n=5) was determined through data saturation. Data was gathered by means of a semi–structured interview with each regional manager (De Vos, 2005:296; Veal, 2006:386). Through the process of data analysis two main categories were identified. The first, Tasks and limitations experienced by regional managers in Johannesburg pointed out that the daily tasks of facility, programme and human resource management is seen as essential responsibilities to recreation managers and it is unfortunate that the majority of problems relating to these tasks are due to unskilled staff that must be supervised on a daily basis. The second, Training needs of recreation staff at recreation centres: Regional managers’ perspective indicated that the staff’s inability to understand the term recreation may in fact be caused by organisations’ bad choices regarding employment or the lack of setting clear criteria for job positions (Mull et al., 2005:227). The answer to training needs for already employed personnel, saving both money and time, may be short courses. By working with each specific centre’s problems and training needs, as well as with each individual employee’s competencies, the short courses could be designed to specifically help better equip the staff member and in turn provide better recreation services to the community.

Founded in London in 1844, the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) has spread across the world, becoming integrated into state programmes of social reform and driving a development discourse that links socially productive youth into economic moralities of transformation. I trace the circulation of these ideas through a multi-sited, cross-cultural ethnographic study of Young Men's Christian Associatin (YMCA) centres in the UK and The Gambia, focussing on YMCA programmes that operate transnationally, implementing global youth-oriented policy in local centres linked by bilateral partnerships. I follow these transnational linkages from Sussex Central YMCA (based in Brighton and Hove, England) where I have strong links as worker and volunteer, to a similarly sized centre in Banjul, Gambia, creating a cross-cultural analytical framework through which to explore the experiences of young men participating in their programmes. Using these contrasting contexts, I focus on the lives, narratives and practices of young men and YMCA staff in each location, analysing how YMCA programmes foster a version of transnational masculinity that combines economic rationality with the spiritual principles derived from Protestant Christianity. I explore this in reference to an often implicit, idealised form of YMCA masculinity based around strenght of 'mind, body and spirit', known as the 'Whole Man'. I suggest that the 'Whole Man' operates as an idealised motif of manhood within YMCA centres, fostering notions of self-sacrifice, empathy and embodied dynamism that is reproduced at the YMCA through 'secular rituals'. I trace how these masculine subjectivities interact with localised conceptions of manhood and youth in each location, focussing on the interplay of differing versions, conceptualisations and practices of masculine behaviour in each location. This thesis is generated by the friction between self-help models and actual lived realities, frictions which I hope to show represent the limitations of totalising models of coherent subjectivity based on moral principles.

Aquatic and recreation centres (ARCs) are social spaces that provide communities with opportunities to be physically active. They deliver important health, well-being, and social benefits to communities and contribute to local economies by providing job and income opportunities (Howat et al., 2012; Tower et al., 2014; Victorian Auditor General’s Office, 2016). Despite the significant role ARCs play in the community, the factors that have guided ARC planning and decision-making processes are largely unknown. To address this knowledge gap, two public sector management theories, new public management theory (NPMT) and public choice theory (PCT), were employed to explain ARC planning and decision-making processes. This is the first time these theoretical lenses have been applied simultaneously to explain ARC planning and decision-making processes. The current study was guided by two research questions, ‘How is a leisure planning process used in ARC planning?’ and ‘How is a decision-making process used in ARC planning?’ A qualitative multiple-case-study design investigated two local government cases in metropolitan Melbourne, Australia. The current study employed two data sources: documents (n= 264) and semi-structured interviews (n=19) to explore the research questions. Data analysis, deductively guided by NPMT and PCT, were conducted using a six-step thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006, 2012). Data were analysed within the individual cases by using thematic maps to illustrate the components for ARC planning and decision-making processes. The data were then analysed across these two cases through triangulation and pattern-matching to identify the global, organising, and basic themes. The current study is the first in-depth academic investigation into ARC planning and decision-making processes. The findings explain the lived experiences of people involved in ARC planning and decision-making processes. The current study identified the two cases followed a non-systematic leisure planning process i.e., the local governments applied individual components based on leisure planning models and NPMT to suit their individual ARC’s development. Therefore, the planning process fits somewhere between an ad-hoc planning method, which has no structure, and a structured process similar to a leisure planning model. The ARC planning data analysis identified four focus areas i.e., research, service delivery, engaged experts, and organisational outputs, to explain the process used by the local government when planning an ARC in metropolitan Melbourne. The ARC decision-making data analysis identified three focus areas i.e., government influence, financial influence, and political influence, to explain the ARC decision-making process. Further, the ARC planning and decision-making processes was reliant upon each other. From a practical perspective, the findings explained that local government did not use a structured planning model, however, the two ARCs applied similar planning and decision-making focus areas. These focus areas act as a starting point in the development of a model of how ARCs are planned in metropolitan Melbourne. From a theoretical perspective, the findings identified that the ARC planners in the two cases made decisions that were explained by financial outputs (NPMT) and political behaviours (PCT), indicating that ARC decision-making was more weighted towards financial outcomes rather than community benefit.

The birth population in Taiwan has been declining year by year. Many literatures support moderate exercise to help the development of the fetus. Especially in the third trimester, there are general problems of lower extremity edema and low back pain. The hydrostatic pressure is used to reduce the burden during pregnancy, but it is based on traditional practices in Taiwanese pregnant women. The attitude towards the use of recreational activities in the waters is still conservative. In this study, pregnant women were surveyed using the safety and health awareness of recreational activities in the waters during pregnancy. The facets included: efficacy identification, consumption cognition, risk identification and safety and health identification in the use of water recreation activities during pregnancy. The survey targets pregnant women in Chiayi and Tainan. There are 137 valid questionnaires. The results showed that the willingness to use recreational activities in the waters during pregnancy was only 38, compared with 68 in the non-pregnancy period, a clear 56% difference. In any case, respondents had a high level of recognition for the use of recreational activities in the waters during pregnancy, with 85.4% of those who agreed and strongly agreed to improve sleep quality. A survey of consumption perceptions in the field of recreational activities in the waters shows that pregnant women have the highest demand for “emergency SOS” conditions, and 97.1% agree and agree. The risk identification survey using leisure activities during pregnancy showed that “water quality sanitation management conditions” was the first choice, with 94.9% consent and non-consensus. According to the safety and health approval survey, "the difference between water temperature and room temperature is too large" is the worrying item that pregnant women think is the safest and the healthest, and the agreement and the unrecognized person are up to 84.7%. Cross-analysis results show that the socio-economic background is different, and the efficacy identification, consumption cognition, risk identification and safety and health identification of the use of water leisure activities during pregnancy, and most cross-analysis items all show significant differences in chi-square test, but cross-analysis The items are still quite different from each other. On behalf of the pregnant women's society and the background of pregnancy, their views are still different. It means that the leisure activities of the waters should provide a multi-use thinking and relatively safe and healthy environment for pregnant women. In addition, the fear of increasing the risk of miscarriage is the reason for indirectly affecting the frequency of recreational activities in the waters during pregnancy. The research results suggest that in the era of user payment, the industry should comprehensively examine the needs of the consumer groups, and should indirectly reflect the service quality management of hardware equipment and water quality sanitation and safety to obtain consumer recognition.

The area is known for its “bunny-chows”, tearooms, saris, American Clothing stores, spices, jewellers, tailors, fah-fee and the feared Duchene gang. Central to the life of this “town” was Currie’s Fountain sports ground, popularly known as “Currie’s”, which served as a sports, cultural and political protest venue for seven decades. This urban experience of blacks, who were referred to as “non-Europeans”, during the apartheid era, and the institutions and places that are of cultural, educational, religious, sports and political importance, and thus part of the city’s heritage, is largely absent in publications on Durban’s history. This dissertation addresses this issue and focuses on an old part of Durban, referred to as the Warwick Junction Precinct (WJP), that was shaped by colonial and apartheid policies and planning, from the 1870s to the 1980s, identifying the “non-European” presence and what the nature of this presence was. It focuses on the micro level of the spatial development of a precinct, spawned in the aftermath of indenture and identifies the tapestry of facilities, institutions, places and spaces that collectively comprise and symbolise “non-European” Durban. It traces the establishment and growth of this other “invisible” precinct, since the settlement of Indians in Durban in the 1870s and the urbanization of Africans, until the 1980s when the apartheid ideology and its structures started to implode. Spatial information in the form of maps, diagrams and photographs, combined with the social history, laws and planning responses over a hundred and ten year period, identifies and maps out a substantial area that traces residential, religious, educational, commercial, sports and struggle sites that are of historical significance and thus part of the heritage of a multi-cultural city. Although restricted to a fairly small area, it has all the elements that comprise a city, such as commercial and residential areas, worship sites, a burial site, educational institutions and libraries, numerous markets, bus, train and taxi transport nodes, recreational and struggle sites that are of cultural and socio-political significance to Blacks in the city of Durban, for more than a century. This study documents the evolution of the Warwick Junction Precinct which has become a city in its own right with a rich heritage spanning both the colonial and apartheid eras.

This Thesis, Urban Active Junction: Connecting neighbourhoods with a NTM fitness centre, is about movement and physical exercise in an urban environment. In-between spaces are often underutilised, creating an opportunity for to connect and integrate adjacent spaces. With the help of human activity these space can become public environment with a social atmosphere, which can be enhanced through design details. I then introduce non-motorised transport and the significant need for an alternative mode of transport, due to increasing congestion in the city. This is done through an analysis cycling and what is required to develop cycling as an alternative mode of transport. The relationship between body and building, illustrate their intertwined and inseparable nature. Despite the wide range of movement that the body is capable of, architecture has the ability to enhance a user’s experience of a space by stimulating a sensory response to the building, while also manipulating the body into particular movement patterns. The programme of the building creates a dialogue between different the public space and the building. A with a non-motorised transport interchange and a gymnasium making up the bulk of the programme, serving to integrate the contrasting communities of Bellevue and Yeoville with Houghton. The site is located on the corner of Louis Botha Avenue and Cavendish Street on the border Bellevue, Yeoville and Houghton. Through a thorough urban analysis and site analysis the site is understood in greater detail, with precedent studies serving to give relevance to certain design decisions. The design of the building opens to the urban context on the ground floor, with movement routes informing positioning and functionality of space

Over the past decade, there has been increased attention in international development literature on the concept of ‘development through sport’. Sport has long been used in various capacities of development practice especially in lower income countries. Various studies on sport development in rural areas have been undertaken. However, they do not provide a clear explanation of the major factors that constrain the growth and improvement of sport in rural communities in most developing countries. This study focused on identifying the factors that limit sport development in the rural areas of Mutoko District in Zimbabwe. A mixed method approach was followed. The first phase was exploratory and qualitative in nature. In phase 2, quantitative studies, which were mainly confirmatory were carried out. Youth (males and females), men, women, disabled people, school heads, District administrators, club coaches, chiefs and headmen were the respondents. Focus group discussions, participant observation, semi structured interviewing and assistive devices were used to gather data in the first phase. The Thematic Content Analysis was used to analyse the data. A questionnaire containing both open and closed-ended questions was used to confirm the results of phase one. Frequencies were calculated using the IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24.0. Sport development in Mutoko District was found to be poor, mainly as a result of multiple challenges such as inadequate funding, poor sporting infrastructure, low stakeholder support, shortage of qualified coaches, and lack of appropriate attire and equipment. Schools played a significant role in providing sporting opportunities for the youth in the District. Male youth were reported to be more readily participating part in sporting activities compared to their female counterparts. This was said to be due to the existence of only one professional sport club for males in the District. Apart from this, there was poor awareness and appreciating of the benefits of participating in sporting activities. Based on these results, it was recommended that government support in terms of funding and availing sport infrastructure was crucial in promoting sport development. Grassroots community members and other local stakeholders could support sporting activities through schools.
