Artek was founded in November 1935. The name of the company, Art + Technology, reflects its objectives and methods of operation. The intention was to offer to its wide range of customers, practical, economical, hygienic and above all Modern furniture that reflected its own time. The furniture was to represent the values of an urban and efficient lifestyle. In the company’s founding meeting on 26.11.1935, Maire Gullichsen and Alvar Aalto became the main shareholders. Other shareholders were: Nils–Gustaf Hahl, Artek’s first managing director; P.W. Puhakka, the managing director of Huonekalu- ja Rakennustyötehdas, the company that produced the furniture designed by Aalto; Aino Marsio–Aalto; architect Aili–Salli Ahde; professor Carl Hahl; and architect Arne Ervi.

We develop and test the idea that public appreciation for authentic lowbrow culture affords an effective way for certain elites to address feelings of authenticity-insecurity arising from “high status denigration” (Hahl and Zuckerman 2014). This argument, which builds on recent sociological research on the “search for authenticity” (e.g., Grazian 2005) and on Bourdieu’s (1993) notion of artistic “disinterestedness,” is validated through experiments with U.S. subjects in the context of “outsider” art (Fine 2004). The first study demonstrates that preference for lowbrow culture perceived to be authentic is higher when individuals feel insecure in their authenticity because they attained status in a context where extrinsic incentives are salient. The second study demonstrates that audiences perceive the members of erstwhile denigrated high-status categories to be more authentic if they consume lowbrow culture, but only if the cultural producer is perceived as authentic. We conclude by noting how this “authenticity-by-appreciation” effect might be complementary to distinction-seeking as a motivation for elite cultural omnivorousness, and we draw broader implications for when and why particular forms of culture are in demand.

Alors que l’éthique et la loi poussent la recherche à plus de sécurité, ainsi qu’à une moindre utilisation des animaux, il est devenu crucial de développer des systèmes in vitro d’une plus grande pertinence. Depuis la fin du XXe siècle, plusieurs systèmes ont fait leur apparition pour tenter de pallier les difficultés rencontrées, et notamment les « organes-sur-puces » (organ-on-chip systems). Ces systèmes microfluidiques de culture cellulaire avancés permettant de recréer certaines fonctions tissulaires grâce au contrôle très précis des conditions du microenvironnement cellulaire. Malgré les avancées de la bioingénierie et l’amélioration de nos méthodes de culture in vitro, la discipline est jeune et de nombreux progrès restent à faire. Les travaux présentés ici détaillent le développement d’un organe-sur-puce incluant une membrane d'hydrogel déformable et dégradable, aux propriétés physico-chimiques proches de tissus mous tels que les poumons ou les intestins. Cette puce semble pertinente pour accueillir des tissus barrières, composés de plusieurs types cellulaires, organisés de part et d'autre, ainsi qu'au sein de cette barrière, souvent soumise à des stimuli mécaniques. Durant ce doctorat, plusieurs objectifs ont été atteints : - Concevoir et fabriquer un organe-sur-puce incluant un hydrogel biocompatible et déformable, ainsi qu’un système microfluidique permettant le contrôle indépendant du flux et de la déformation de la membrane d’hydrogel. - Caractériser la déformation subie par l’hydrogel. - Cultiver dans la puce des cellules intestinales, formant un épithélium structuré en trois dimensions, et caractériser sa perméabilité à des molécules de tailles variées
Modern day ethics and laws call for more safety and use of fewer animals in biomedical research. It became crucial to develop novel in vitro devices of higher relevance. Since the end of the twentieth century, several systems have been proposed by researchers in attempts to palliate the shortcomings of current systems. Notably, organs-on-chip systems are specifically tailored to recapitulate tissue functions in a manner that remains easily accessible for the experimenter. Despite the significant improvements that were brought during the last century to in vitro cell and tissue culture systems, the field of bioengineering is still young and much progress remains to be done. The work presented here details the development of an organ-on-chip that includes a biocompatible and actuatable hydrogel membrane, with controlled physico-chemical properties. Such chip is relevant when hosting barrier tissues, which are composed of several cell types, disposed on each side of a barrier, as well as within its bulk, and are often submitted to mechanical stimuli. During this PhD, several objectives have been attained. Notably, we: - Designed and produced an organ-on-chip including a biocompatible and actuatable hydrogel layer, as well as a microfluidic system allowing the independent control of both flow and actuation. - Characterized the deformation of the hydrogel layer. - Cultured intestinal cells within the chip, which formed a three dimensionally structure epithelium, and characterized its apparent permeability to molecules of varying sizes

Through the development of draping and pleating methods of heavy fabric referring indirectly to the stage Curtain, the aim of the project is to study ambiguous coexistence of masking and exposing made by repetitive folds, simultaneously developing technique studies and site analysis and apply them to make a new concert hall for Stockholm.The thesis defines the concert hall a public space, and further develops the concert hall as a public space by exposing the commonly inaccessible backstage area in on the ground floor Visitors and concert-goers have the opportunity to look behind the scenes and reconsider the value of art by seeing how a piece of music has been shaped and rehearsed. There are some performance halls throughout Europe that open their backstage doors to the public in order to see what is going on behind the stage.Ways of disclosing the backstage has been achieved through design technique studies and by considering the history of folded fabric in a design research.The main part of the research is based on the theoretical influence that Semper specified in his book Style, the topic of textiles and their relationship in architecture and it has been completed by developing a terminology and meanings defined by contemporary artist Petra Blaisse in her book Inside outside.Throughout history, many artists have spent time on the study of fabric and folds; an example is the dramatic drapery in Baroque sculptures such as the “Bernini folds,” making a hard material appears soft. I tried to take advantage of all the qualities that heavy fabric can offer for the development of my building and use most of the information that can be derived from fabrics application.An example of applying these qualities is making deep semi masked openings. Making apertures through deep folds to rehearsal rooms, the folds open and close visually as people pass by. By continuing this method and using the qualities of deep surfaces from outside to inside I tried to achieve a backstage that is both open and masked in the same time.The project has been started by focusing on two parallel tracks of site and technique study.The site is located on the Djurgården. Djurgården is home to historical buildings and monuments, museums, galleries. Galärparken is located between three museums that are known for their historical heritage. This site requires very careful design in relation to buildings surrounding it. However; the site provides a good context for a distinctive building that creates identity and contributes to a good overall situation. Parallel to the site analyzes the design technique studies have been developed.The proposal has been developed through analyzing two parallel tracks of pleating and draping.Within the pleating method linear techniques have been investigated to make repetitive folds to define surfaces, and extruding techniques have been investigated to create volumetric depth.Draping methods are: fluttering, masking, fullness and tassel. For instance, a curtain that has no pleating at all (a flat sheet) has 0% fullness; a curtain that has 100% fullness will start out as fabric that is twice as wide as required.”Glossary of Theatre terms.The project’s program is to make a 1500-seat auditorium.The project is made of two different layers. The first layer shapes the outer envelope and the other layer is happening inside enveloping the auditorium. These two layers are connected by different shaped slabs at different levels. The auditorium drapes loosely between the slabs at different levels. The circulation between floors take places all around the auditorium. Each level has a view to the other floors so the flow of people can be seen from different levels.The first floor is accessible for all people and provides an open plan while exposing backstage and makes transition between Nordiska museum and the waterfront.The fullness quality has been introduced in three parts of the exterior envelope in relation to the site. The first is the part that faces the Nordic museum including one of the entrances between the folds.The next part is the part that faces to Stockholm and again openings are embedded between the folds.The last pleated part is located within the side that faces Vasa museum. The Vasa museum is here in close proximity with the concert hall. In respect to the Vasa museum the concert hall has been pushed in, and deep surfaces can be seen here as well.The inner layer has been shaped also by deep surfaces made by deep folds. At ground floor, where the back stage is located, the deep folds can make semi open apertures and provide a view to rehearsal rooms for visitors. From the other side the semi masked openings of the backstage faces a cafeteria with seats with a view to the training rooms.On the other floors, folds create openings to the auditorium from different sides.The concert hall has been shaped with respect to site and adjacent buildings. The implementation and coexistence of masking and revealing strategies have been developed through design techniques studies and subsequently influenced the design.

The main goal of this project was to write a review about different quantum Hall effects. This review focuses on the integer and relativistic quantum Hall effect in graphene. The quantum Hall effect is a newly discovered phenomena that was experimentally observed in 1980 and relativistic quantum Hall effect in graphene was observed in 2005. This project takes a theoretical approach to describe the quantum Hall effects and graphene itself. Experiments has shown that for very strong magnetic fields applied to 2D systems, the Hall resistance becomes quantized, RH=h/ne2 and only depends on the charge of the electron and Planck's constant, two fundamental constants of nature. This sets a new standard on how to define resistance, and gives a good tool for precise measurements of the fine structure constant.

Despite all great words about public architecture with democracy and everyone's equal value in mind, I believe that a future belief and a common idea can often be lacking today. In my work, I have therefore decided to examine how a Town Hall can be used as a tool for creating a natural connection between citizens and authorities. Can the design of a Town Hall help to construct the democratic citizen? Can politics find its place in everyday life? My ambition has been to concretise the idealistic slogans.I have developed a number of requirements that the new Town Hall in Nynäshamn should match:- Create a Town Hall with an open cultural arena in center where the municipality appears as citizens own organisation rather than an authority. I am convinced that this aspect is at least as important as a functional program or attractive design.- A Town Hall that gives an insight into the authority's work. The politics must be visible and accessible for an ordinary citizen.- A flexible public solution that matches the requirements of change.- A distinct program that gives an understanding of the logic of the building, both interior and exterior.
Trots stora ord om offentlig arkitektur med demokrati och allas lika värde i åtanke, anser jag att en framtidstro och en gemensam idé ofta kan saknas idag. I mitt arbete har jag därför bestämt mig för att undersöka hur ett stadshus kan användas som verktyg för att skapa en naturlig koppling mellan medborgare och myndighet. Kan formgivningen av ett stadshus bidra till att konstruera den demokratiska medborgaren? Kan politiken finna plats i det vardagliga livet? Min ambition har varit att konkretisera de idealistiska slagorden.Jag har tagit fram ett antal krav som det nya stadshuset i Nynäshamn skulle uppfylla:- Skapa ett stadshus med en öppen kulturarena i centrum där kommunen framstår som medborgarnas egna organisation snarare än en myndighet. Jag är övertygad om att den aspekten är minst lika viktig som ett funktionellt program eller en tilltalande design.- Ett stadshus som ger en inblick i myndighetens arbete. Politiken ska vara synlig och tillgänglig för den vanliga medborgaren.- En flexibel offentlig lösning som följer förändringens krav.- Ett tydligt program som ger en förståelse för byggnadens logik såväl interiört som exteriört.

Strängnäs City Hall is a place for the people of Strängnäs to come together. The building is separated into two parts, one part for the people working in the building and one part for the public. The part for the workers consists of a traditional brick building with views overlooking the harbor. The public part has a glass facade, inviting people into the building. Inside the visitor moves through a café into the exhibition hall, up a ramp to the chambers, and further up to the restaurant with the rooftop terrace. The ramp connects the public part to the private part of the building on each level, both physically and visually, bringing the politicians and the residents of Strängnäs together.
Strängnäs stadshall är en plats där folket i Strängnäs kommer samman för att mötas. Byggnaden består av två delar, en för de som arbetar i stadshallen, och en för besökare. The new Town Hall in Nynäshamn is a buildning made out of solid timber. My goal with this project was to try to understand solid timber as a material and it’s constructive properties. To help myself in the construction and design of the buildning i set up a few rules. For example that loadbearing walls can not have openings and that conventional doors shall only be used if nessesary. The building has been worked out through scetch models in different scales.

As market forces drive up the gross weight on rail, railroads continue moving toward increased usage of heavy axle load (HAL) equipment, namely 286,000 lb and 315,000 lb GWR vehicles that provide more competitive and efficient transportation. According to the AAR's Universal Machine Language Equipment Register (UMLER) database, since 1995, at least 70% of vehicles built each year were HAL vehicles. 2005 had 49,923 more HAL vehicles running on the North America railroad system than the previous year. This practice can result in significant overall savings in operating costs. However, HAL equipment can also accelerate wear and damage to the railroad infrastructure and have a greater potential for truck warping and vehicle dynamics problems. Thus, keeping rolling stock and track safe while ramping up the usage of HAL equipment presents a significant challenge. Wheel Impact Load Detector (WILD) SuperSites, developed by Salient Systems Inc. (SSI), provide real time monitoring and alarming on excessive axle loads and vehicle dynamics. SuperSites are important tools in the scientific study of HAL vehicles and the monitoring of heavy haul operations. This paper provides a snapshot of results of studies conducted on Union Pacific (UP) HAL routes and demonstrates how HAL loads affect the rolling stock, the track, and the wheel/rail interaction. The heavier the load, the higher the impact of the defective wheels to the track; therefore, heavily loaded vehicle routes (such as the coal route from the Powder River Basin to Kansas City and the primary intermodal route from Los Angeles to El Paso) need to be monitored more proactively to avoid track structural damage.

Abstract Increasing the capacity and gross weight of North American freight cars above the current 263,000-pound car (33-ton axle loads) is one way to improve the productivity of rail freight operations. An increase in expenditures on track and bridge maintenance is normally essential if axle load increases are to provide promised benefits. If each train can carry more net tons of bulk commodity safely, then productivity savings will be achieved by reducing the number of train crews required to haul a given tonnage. If the ratio of net-to-gross tons can be increased, additional savings can be achieved in fuel, track costs, and equipment costs. With fewer trains to move any given tonnage, there will be an improvement in capacity and a reduction in meet-pass delays. Over the past 15 years, Transportation Technology Center, Inc. (TTCI), a subsidiary of the Association of American Railroads (AAR), has devoted extensive research efforts to safety, technical, and economic issues related to increasing axle loads. Much of the research has been based upon the five phases of the Heavy Axle Load (HAL) test program. More than 1,200 million gross tons (MGT) of HAL traffic was accumulated at the Facility for Accelerated Service Testing (FAST) located at the Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) Transportation Technology Center near Pueblo, Colorado. AAR and the FRA jointly fund the HAL program with significant cooperation from railroads and suppliers. Results show that, in general, heavier axle loads will increase track and facility costs, but decrease operating and equipment costs. Since track costs are much smaller than combined operating and equipment costs, HAL operations can be economically beneficial even if the percentage increase in track costs is far greater than the percentage decrease in operating plus equipment costs. However, it should be emphasized again that in situations where track and bridges need upgrading for heavier axle loads, investment in track and bridges needs to be made first in order to realize the operating benefits from HAL operations. Total track costs were predicted to rise 5 to 10 percent under 286,000-pound cars (36-ton axle loads) and 15 to 18 percent under 315,000-pound cars (39-ton axle loads). Bridge costs, which were included as their own separate category, were predicted to rise faster than track costs. While the predicted increases for bridges were extremely high, bridge costs were only 10 to 15 percent of track costs in the base case, so they did not dominate the analysis.

The paper sets out to consolidate relevant learning from South Africa’s two electric heavy haul operations, and relate it to practices in two significant heavy hauling countries, the US as font of heavy haul, and China that has established a significant presence in heavy haul. In comparing the present dominant diesel heavy haul with electric heavy haul, it is evident that the latter can offer sustainability through open system interaction with its environment. However, electric heavy haul solutions are still divergent, contrary to what one would expect in a globalized industry. Reviewing prospects for consideration leads to a main conclusion that future heavy haul electrification should rest on an open system approach within a smart total energy management paradigm.

Abstract This paper is the first attempt to use the plasma Hall effect for magnetic field detection. The plasma Hall microsensor measures the Hall voltage induced by AC plasma electrons. In a theoretical analysis, we develop an analytical model of the plasma Hall sensor in order to express the plasma Hall voltage as a function of electrode geometry, magnetic field, plasma discharge field and chamber pressure. On this basis, we have designed and fabricated a new class of magnetic microsensors using AC neon plasma. In the experimental study, we have measured the plasma Hall voltage for varying five different conditions, including the frequency and magnitude of magnetic field, the frequency and magnitude of plasma discharge voltage, and the neon pressure. The plasma Hall microsensors show a magnetic field sensitivity of 8.87±0.18mvV/G with 4.48% nonlinearity. The experimental results agree well with those estimated from the theoretical analysis, thus verifying the feasibility of the plasma Hall device for a new class of magnetic microsensor.

North American railways have experienced significant traffic growth over the past 20 years to the point where many lines are at or near capacity. While the current worldwide recession has eased capacity constraints momentarily, the long-term trends are for continued traffic growth. Faced with the prospects of perhaps doubling freight traffic demand in the next 20 years and adding significant passenger traffic, the railroads are developing cost effective ways to increase capacity. Besides constructing additional tracks, improving the performance (i.e., safety, reliability, and service lives) of key track components is expected. Both heavy axle loads (HAL) and high speed rail (HSR) passenger traffic require high quality, durable track. The paper will describe recent work done to improve the dynamic performance and durability of these track components: • Special trackwork. • Rail joints. • Crossties. • Track transitions. For example, turnouts are being developed that can accommodate freight shippers served from mainline track that also carry high speed traffic. These continuous mainline rail switches and frogs allow slow speed diverging operations that will not affect mainline track performance. The paper will also discuss further heavy haul infrastructure research and development needs.
