Medina, Diego. "Trabajos del vicio, afanes del amor vicioso par Simón de Castelblanco : édition critique et étude." Thesis, Rennes 2, 2021. http://www.theses.fr/2021REN20048.
This work proposes the first critical edition, with annotations and introductory study, of Trabajos del vicio, afanes del amor vicioso (Madrid, 1680), written, as well demonstrated, by the Augustinian friar and preacher Simon de Castelblanco. Following ecdotic procedures - in connection with two complementary disciplines such as material bibliography and textual criticism - it has been possible to clarify the history of the text and prove its true author. The phase of the recensio reveals the existence of an edition of 1680, and an issue of 1684, which presents two states of edition. The issue is the product of the commercial strategy orchestrated by the printer-publisher Lorenzo García and the bookseller Juan Fernández with the intention of overcoming the lucrative failure that the commercialization of the novel must have entailed. The critical text, accompanied by an extensive annotation apparatus, has been rigorously fixed from the digitized copy of the BDH (R-8617), after verifying the equality of the rest of the copies. Given the scarcity of philological studies on the author and the novel, the preliminary study has used different documentary sources such as bio-bibliographic sourcebooks and compendia on Augustinian friars, dealing in depth with aspects related to the biography and work of Simon de Castelblanco. Likewise, through the perspective of the reception studies and the comparative analysis with other contemporary novels, Trabajos del vicio is framed within the corpus of the ―long novelǁ of the last quarter of the 17th century, characterized by an exemplary literature of strong ascetic morality

This thesis focuses on the representation of women in the short stories of Alonso de Castillo Solórzano. Mirroring the evolution of a genre popular in XVIIth century Spain, the short stories here under scrutiny are characterized by the extreme diversity and complexity of the female image. This study proposes to reveal the different faces of women and their new roles through an analytical approach to the text.Through the feminine perspective, we show that the author constantly favours variety, invention and admiratio. His aim is above all to entertain and charm his readers. The study of collective and individual representations of the female existence serves to underscore how much the author loves this transgressive feminine image, and to highlight the area of autonomy and expression granted to heroines, by means of a peculiar writing.Through his pen, the traditional framework governing the relations of domination and power between men and women is seen to be profoundly altered. Far from championing the feminine cause or questioning the established order, Castillo Solórzano's stories demonstrate, nevertheless, the decline in moral values and the upheaval which characterized the so-called « decadent » Spanish society of Philip IV

Man struggling with his own century has always been driven by the desire to stay away from his fellow men and to flourish without the company of his contemporaries. In Spain, such a desire specifically crystallized during the 16th and 17th centuries just as an economic, moral and religious crisis was shaking the foundations of a Spanish society criticized for its clientelism and iniquity. The manifestation of this disillusionment gave birth to a stream of moral poetry, a philosophical poetry inherited from stoicism and federated by the antithetical platitudes of menosprecio de corte y alabanza de aldea (« scorn of court life and praise of village life »). The series of texts generated by this dialectic of life in seclusion, which is too often confined to the horatian beatus ille, discloses through a corpus of seventy-two texts the perpetual process of rewriting and the freedoms of poetic and philosophical treatment. The study on the types of formulation, the themes and common assumptions, and also on the stylistic devices and prosody carried out within each composition and in the diachronic relation between the study itself and the corpus tends to emphasize the argumentative depth of the series of texts and the combination of its variations
Monjarret, Elise. "Recherches sur le discours pamphlétaire dans la première partie du dix-septième siècle en Espagne : des conditions historiques aux pratiques discursives : étude et analyse du Discurso de las privanzas (1606-1608) de Francisco de Quevedo." Thesis, Rennes 2, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013REN20047.
At the crossroads of history and literature, the study of the pamphlets targeting the royal favourite in the early 17th century Spain seeks to review and contextualise a discourse of baroque outrage. In order to investigate the discursive construction of the black legend of the favourite, looking beyond the often formulaic criticism that is leveled at him, we will strive to demonstrate the aesthetic consistency of Francisco de Quevedo’s Discurso de las privanzas. Around 1608, the lettered young courtier turned this lucid and skilled pamphlet against Philip III’s flamboyant protégé, the duke of Lerma, whose exercise of royal favour shook the foundations of the Spanish monarchy. This underestimated work deploys the contextual, syncretic and paradoxical powers of baroque language, offering an ingenious response to the socio-discursive challenges that faced those discontented with the client-patron system that prevailed at Court. We propose to explore the complexity of those challenges by contrasting Quevedo’s work with other written attacks against the royal favourite that claim, likewise, to break the silence. Bringing into play the ambiguities of praise and rebuttal, the alibi of friendship and the relationship between voice, image and the written word, these texts enable us to assess the implication of this critical and unfettered discourse in the context of baroque Spain

'Agudeza concepto, argutezza concetto, ingenium acumen, pointe, wit, Witz'. . . All these terms denote a stylistic criterion which has been central, even if not always explicitly aknowledged by the authors, in the european litterature of the seventeenth century. .
Faure-Gignoux, Sophie. "Le théâtre anthropophage de Miguel Romero Esteo ou le cycle grotescomachique infernal." Thesis, Aix-Marseille, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015AIXM3035.
The theatrical universe of Miguel Romero Esteo, undoubtedly one of the most influential spanish playwrights of the second half of the 20th century, opens up spaces that emerge as unknown worlds no one has ever explored. In his work, consisting of plays he himself calls « grotescomachies », he invents a new dramaturgy, festive, ritual and baroque, which draws on various literary, theatrical, pictorial and musical traditions. The abundant usage of intertextuality in this polymorphous and hybrid theater, post-modern ahead of his time – where the researcher can gather traces of a cultural anthropology – underlines what the Self owes to the Other in every aesthetic and ideological perception of the world. Our primary focus will deal with the treatment of language, as the creation of the dramatic speech ventures off the beaten path and outlines routes that are unusual. Romero Esteo engages in a true deconstruction of speech and thus creates an unprecedented imaginary space, where poetry and music hold a central place. The author creates a celebration of sense and senses, at once loud and lyrical, but also critical and grotesque, where every single element of the dramatic structure falls within a specific form of play which, far from just materializing a unique playground, redefines the boundaries of the theatrical space-time.« Free-range » theater, theater of freedom… this unrivalled language, which mingles animal and human, spiritual and physical, insanity and reason, earth and sky, builds a timeless universe that allows for better appreciation and constant mockery of the distinctive features of the human condition
Lyvet, Caroline. "Gonzalo de Céspedes y Meneses, un des créateurs oubliés du grand roman "baroque" dans l'Espagne du siècle d'or : Étude du "Poema trágico del Español Gerardo" (1615-1617) et de "Varia fortuna del soldado Píndaro" (1626)." Montpellier 3, 2008. http://www.theses.fr/2008MON30060.
At the beginning of the XVIIe century, the forms which will give birth to the modern novel are structuring themselves. This study proposes to give again its place in this movement of creation to a forgotten author, Gonzalo de Céspedes y Meneses. The specificity of its long works which take part of the emergence of a large serious novel in Golden Age Spain was too often neglected by criticism. This work aims first of all to show theirs characteristics : they mix elements of the old idealistic novels with contemporary frame, make amalgamate various narrative sub-genera, are at the same time creations and reflexion on the act even of writing. The study examines the sentimental intrigues in love thereafter : thanks to counter exemplarity, the texts post a fundamental edifying dimension under which the reader can find however ambiguity: the expression of the pleasures of love and even of desire holds an important place. The presence of the feeling of the desengaño is also analyzed: the texts are turned in a completely modern way towards interiority of the characters whose transformations the reader follows. Finally this thesis highlights the interest of the novelist for the events of the contemporary world of its creation: he is trying to propose a novel of Spain where are registered social concerns and in particular those of the urban nobility because the novels borrow from the real universe at the time when the question of the mimesis is increasingly central for the fiction
Thesis, Toulouse 2, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017TOU20096.
This thesis present a critical edition of the non-well known novel written and published by the fencing master of Philip IV, Luis Pacheco de Narváez, whose title is Historia ejemplar de las dos constants mujeres españolas, printed for the first time in Madrid by the Imprenta del Reino the year 1635. The work is divided into five chapters. In addition to the section dedicated to the edition of the novel (ch. V), which establishes an annotated text based on the only two known editions (Madrid, 1635 and Seville, 1744) with her list of variants, another four serve as context to it. Thus, we present a biography of Pacheco de Narváez (Baeza, 1560-Madrid, 1640), drafted in accordance with the preserved documentation, which is complemented by a literary list of references of this period about the figure and the work of the author, and an epigraph that wants to be a scientific consideration on his relations with Francisco de Quevedo (ch. I); a history of the text that studies the date of composition, the first edition and the complicated situation to publish novels in these years due to censorship (1625-1635), an aborted publication project and the second edition, as well as the critical trajectory of the novel and the absence of later editions (ch. II); a taxonomic study (although emphasis is placed on the morality present in the story) that implies its attachment to the genre of the so-called “courtly novel” (ch. III); and finally a chapter dedicated to the literary context, divided in two large parts: one dedicated to the sources and materials that the author could use to form the novel, and another that studies, by way of example, one of the literary topics present in the text and in the literature of the time: the descriptio tempestatis. This last part complements, as addition, with a study of the subject of the storm in the Jerusalen conquistada (1609) by Lope de Vega (ch. IV)
