Based on house of quality concept, the relation between servitization strategy and strategic elements were confirmed through grey relational analysis method. Accordingly, the specific elements characteristics of manufacturing enterprise management core - talents & team and relationship, knowledge resources and flowing, information infrastructure and treatment methods, and organization structure and management were illustrated in three servitization stages - product servitization enlarging, servitization capability continuously improving and servitization integration and innovation. According to elements characteristics, the strategic targets for different servitization stages were brought forward, and four strategic elements specific managing methods were further offered for different servitization stages. The research can offer decision references for manufacturing enterprise to confirm element character and servitization stage, and give effective support to confirm management key points and methods of servitization in manufacturing enterprises at different stages.

Servitization requires the acquisition and development of service-oriented capabilities. Research has contributed considerably to the investigation of the necessary capabilities for successful servitization and the introduction of numerous service-based capabilities. However, previous studies typically focus on proposing a general set of capabilities or processes for servitization. There is limited knowledge of how a manufacturing company can identify the necessary capabilities and plan the corresponding development actions following its servitization context. Through two phases of a case study, this research proposes a service-oriented strategy formulation method. The method supports the analysis of manufacturing companies’ servitization contexts that lead to appropriate identification of the necessary capabilities for successful servitization. This method further guides the formulation of service-oriented strategies as the strategic logic in how manufacturing companies implement servitization, including the corresponding actions to develop the required capabilities. Finally, the application in a Japanese office machinery manufacturer illustrates the applicability and usability of the proposed method in facilitating the formulation of service-oriented strategies for the servitization of manufacturing companies.

Анотація:
In the era of big data, the furniture manufacturing industry takes digitization and intelligence as its core, and its servitization degree is constantly improving. In this paper, based on input-output table data from major manufacturing countries throughout the world in the period 2000–2014, this study empirically analyzes the impact of servitization on the industrial performance and productivity of the furniture manufacturing industry and finds that servitization level of the global furniture industry is about 20%, showing small growth in the sample period. Developed countries are in the leading position in the process of servitization strategy, and the servitization level among countries is gradually converging. Furniture manufacturing industry does not show a servitization dilemma, and servitization has a positive impact on industry performance and total factor productivity.

Based on multiple micro databases involving Chinese manufacturing enterprises and World Input-Output Database, this article investigates the impact of China’s manufacturing servitization on export technological sophistication from 2000 to 2010. The results show that manufacturing servitization has an inverted U-shaped impact on export technological sophistication. From the perspective of heterogeneity at the enterprise level and industry level, manufacturing servitization has an inverted U-shaped impact on export technological sophistication for mixed trade enterprises, central and western located enterprises, domestic and foreign enterprises, and knowledge-intensive industries, the nonlinear impact is in the promotion range. Besides, manufacturing servitization with domestic and foreign service input source has an inverted U-shaped impact on export technological sophistication, manufacturing servitization with the domestic consumption-oriented service input source and foreign production-oriented service input source have a promoting effect. Servitization with financial industry and technical research and development service source has a promoting effect, while servitization with transportation service input source has an inverted U-shaped effect. Overall global value chain participation level and simple global value chain participation have a positive moderating effect on the impact, especially for enterprises with lower production efficiency. Mechanism analysis confirms that the "spillover" effect and "cost" effect are important channels for manufacturing servitization to promote export technological sophistication.

PurposeThis study aims to examine how servitization affects the environmental and social performance of manufacturing firms.Design/methodology/approachThe hypotheses are tested using fixed-effect panel models based on secondary data of 1,413 manufacturing firms publicly listed in the USA.FindingsResults show that servitization is positively related to the social performance of manufacturing firms; this positive relationship is more prominent under high levels of human resource slack. However, the impact of servitization on environmental performance depends on the level of absorptive capacity and human resource slack. Servitization improves environmental performance under high levels of absorptive capacity and human resource slack, while this positive impact is insignificant under low levels of absorptive capacity and human resource slack.Research limitations/implicationsThe study focuses on the degree (depth) of servitization but ignores the scope of services provided by manufacturing firms (breadth of servitization).Practical implicationsThis research suggests that servitization is an effective way of achieving simultaneous improvements in environmental and social performance. However, high levels of absorptive capacity and human resource slack are needed to achieve this goal.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the servitization literature by demonstrating the environmental and social sustainability benefits of servitization. The findings also highlight the crucial role of absorptive capacity and human resource slack on improving environmental and social performance through servitization.

Purpose This paper aims to present a comprehensive framework that integrates the emerging trends of servitization and digitalization in manufacturing. The influence between digitalization and servitization is defined and quantified. Their contribution to firm performance is analyzed. Design/methodology/approach This paper presents a theoretical model that captures the relationships between the analyzed variables. Drawing on the Spanish Business Strategy Survey, hypothesis testing is conducted using data on 828 Spanish industrial firms. Linear regression models are built to capture the effect of each variable on firm performance and the type of interaction between the variables. Findings Servitization and digitalization are positively related to firm performance. Digitalization positively mediates the relationship between servitization and firm performance. The mediating effect of digitalization contributes to differentiating between the direct and indirect effects of servitization on firm performance. Practical implications The paper provides a useful analysis framework for firms to evaluate servitization and digitalization as success strategies. It is proposed that firms must simultaneously commit to digital transformation and the incorporation of services to create value, especially in business-to-business settings. Servitization and digitalization interact to exert a greater influence on performance. Originality/value The paper contributes to the theory on service strategy by providing an analysis model that includes digitalization as a mediator of the relationship between servitization and firm performance. Digitalization may provide a mechanism to unlock the benefits of servitization and thereby enhance firm performance.

Анотація:
The structure of the manufacturing industry has forced manufacturing companies to understand the importance of digitalization and servitization transformation, in terms of production and R&D. In this study, we examine the relationship between servitization, digitization, and enterprise innovation performance through the lens of dynamic capabilities within enterprises. We also discuss the impact of the transformation servitization strategy on business innovation, and the mechanisms by which it impacts business innovation performance. The study’s findings indicate that servitization significantly contributes to innovation performance, and digitalization acts as a mediating mechanism between the proposed relationships. Thus, this article argues for the integration and growth of servitization and digitization.

Norwegian manufacturers are experiencing increasing competition from manufactures based in developing countries with substantially lower production costs. This increased competition forces manufacturers to differentiate and add more value to their offerings, in order to stay competitive. Servitization represents a strategy for Norwegian manufacturers to do so by expanding their business model to include services and ultimately provide solutions. Despite the evolvement of different servitization strategies among Norwegian manufacturers, the concept has yet to be properly studied in this context. On the basis of a multiple case study, this paper aims to identify why servitization is attractive for Norwegian manufacturers and how the strategy should be implemented. A comprehensive literature study including 26 empirical articles and 20 conceptual articles was initially conducted to provide a theoretical foundation for study. Following this, five suitable Norwegian manufacturing companies were selected as case companies. Data was collected largely by interviewing managers from the five manufacturing companies, and subsequently analysed in relation to the theoretical foundation. The study finds that servitization is attractive for Norwegian manufacturers because the strategy ensures a good alignment between the offerings and the comparative advantages of the companies, and because customers value it. Manufacturers that decide to servitize should put great emphasis on the transition required to become a servitized manufacturer. The new resources that must be developed in order to succeed with a servitization strategy, coupled with cultural and structural rigidnesses, make the required transition more problematic than companies expect. Companies pursuing a new strategy to increase competitiveness cannot, like Resource-advantage theory of competition states, purely rely on its current comparative advantages to find it. In order to do so, they must also critically consider their ability to change and adapt to the new strategies proposed. Servitization is an attractive strategy for Norwegian manufacturers considering their comparative advantages, but when bearing in mind the dynamic capabilities required to implement it, the strategy becomes less apparent.

For commoditised and mature markets, where consumer expectations are rapidly changing, manufacturers have increasingly begun to consider services as an integrated part of their offering. The shift from goods production to service provision affects the way offerings are created, exchanged and promoted. Servitization is more than adding services to products; it is a cultural and organisational phenomenon. This thesis is an exploration of servitization readiness within manufacturing firms. It combines two broad concepts: design and readiness for service. Longitudinal design cases were developed with three manufacturing companies who had expressed an interest in growth through the development of services. The selected companies have traditionally been involved in goods production, and have recently started engaging with services in different ways. Barriers and drivers for the transition from product to service were identified within the literature review and used to inform in-depth interviews with the companies. The data was analysed and informed the development of a semi-structured questionnaire to be deployed with the firms for further information gathering. This research was used to develop a readiness framework. The readiness framework is an assessment tool that allows manufacturing companies to understand where they sit in the servitization journey. In doing so, it raises awareness of the nature of change needed for service implementation. The deployment of the readiness framework and companies’ feedback showed that the firms are at different stages in the servitization journey. In discussing the potential of service within the ii organisations, the main barriers in implementation stem from the lack of fully grasping the notion and the benefits of servitization. The readiness framework attempts to bridge previous studies and models offering companies a tool to understand the nature of change needed to undertake servitization. It raises awareness amongst firms that undertaking servitisation is not just about adding services to an existing product offer, but can significantly affect the internal culture, structure and practices.

In the manufacturing equipment industry, sensors integrated in manufacturing equipment is a prerequisite for higher levels of servitization, such as maintenance and product support services, as the sensors can provide data of equipment usage. In this study, a framework called Evaluation of readiness of servitization has been developed, where manufacturing equipment companies can evaluate whether they benefit from developing new solutions with a higher level of servitization. In the evaluation of servitization, a company in the manufacturing equipment industry should consider the following three factors; Value proposition’s fulfilment of customer needs, Market acceptance of value proposition and Internal capabilities to develop and deliver the solution. This study shows that all three factors must be considered for a justified evaluation. The study is based on a single case study on the manufacturing equipment company Atlas Copco Industrial Technique, and a literature review on servitization in the manufacturing industry. This study shows that uncertainty about customer needs and market acceptance of the new value proposition that servitization entails, constitute obstacles to develop new solutions with a higher level of servitization. Thereby, it is of great importance to a manufacturing equipment company to assess readiness both internally and externally when evaluating if they benefit from developing new solutions with a higher level of servitization.

Denna studie visar att samtliga faktorer måste beaktas för en motiverad utvärdering. Denna studie är baserad på en litteraturstudie om tjänstefiering inom tillverkningsindustrin och en fallstudie om tillverkningsföretaget Atlas Copco Industriteknik. Studien visar att bristande kunskap om kundbehov och marknadens acceptans av det nya värdeerbjudande som tjänstefiering innebär utgör hinder för företag inom tillverkningsindustrin för att kunna utveckla värdeerbjudande med högre servicenivå. Studien visar även att det av stor betydelse för tillverkningsföretag att bedöma beredskap både internt och externt vid utvärdering av beredskap för tjänstefiering.

Manufacturing firms have vigorously pursued opportunities for profitability and growth through service-led growth strategies. A major part of the existing literature has focused on such strategies and has shown that this phenomenon is prevalent and growing in most developed economies. However, very little systematic evidence regarding the extent or consequences of servitization, based on comprehensive survey research, yet exists. Furthermore, the current body of research presents contradictory findings regarding the impact of servitization on firm performance. Drawing on the theoretical framework of the resource-based view, this research seeks to shed some light on this question by exploring the effect of servitization on firm performance. Through a survey of 185 U.S. and European manufacturing firms, along with the use of secondary financial data, this thesis provides empirical evidence that servitization has a direct, positive effect on firm performance. The study also finds that for the vast majority of manufacturers, the development of learning capabilities has served as a significant driver of servitization. Furthermore, the relationship between servitization and firm performance is moderated by industry dynamism. The original contribution of this research to the field of knowledge is twofold, including a theoretical contribution through the validation of the theoretical model and its implications for the literature, and a pragmatic contribution through the managerial implications of the findings. The findings have significant managerial implications because achieving superior bottom-line results is contingent upon the integration of those learning-and service-specific capabilities that transform the nature of an offering. Such integration enables the manufacturing firm and its customers to achieve radically improved operation within their ecosystems.

Dans le processus de servitisation de la fabrication, le gouvernement chinois accorde une grande attention à deux questions, à savoir la relation entre la servitisation de la fabrication et les performances financières de l'entreprise manufacturière chinoise, et la relation entre la servitisation de la fabrication et la performance environnementale dans le contexte de la détérioration de l'environnement en Chine. Sur la base des données spécifiques de la Chine, l'impact de la servitisation manufacturière sur les performances financières et environnementales des entreprises est analysé dans cette thèse.En ce qui concerne le premier problème, une étude empirique du point de vue de l'hétérogénéité régionale, de l'hétérogénéité des sous-industries et de l'hétérogénéité des types est menée. L'impact de la servitisation manufacturière de 30 sous-industries, 31 provinces (villes) et 4 types différents d'entreprises sur les performances financières de la Chine est discuté en utilisant les données obtenues auprès de 512 entreprises manufacturières. Quatre conclusions principales peuvent être tirées : (1) Dans l'ensemble, il existe une relation non linéaire positive entre la servitisation et la performance financière des entreprises manufacturières chinoises. (2) Dans les entreprises manufacturières d'État et les entreprises manufacturières privées, l'impact de la servitisation sur la performance financière des entreprises présente un « type selle ». (3) La servitisation au cube de six provinces (Jiangsu, Fujian, Zhejiang, Anhui, Guangdong et Guangxi) a réussi le test de signification, indiquant la relation non linéaire entre la servitisation de fabrication et la performance financière. En outre, il existe une relation linéaire positive entre la servitisation et la performance financière dans l'industrie de la fabrication de machines et d'équipements électriques (C38).Pour le deuxième problème, la chaîne de valeur mondiale apporte non seulement un commerce de valeur ajoutée, mais forme également une chaîne d'émission de carbone commerciale mondiale. La méthode de décomposition en valeur ajoutée prend mieux en compte les caractéristiques de la servitisation, c'est une explication plus complète des sources régionales et industrielles de la servitisation manufacturière. Une étude basée sur le point de vue de la chaîne de valeur mondiale est menée pour présenter la relation entre la servitisation manufacturière et la performance environnementale, on peut conclure que : (1) Lorsque le niveau de servitisation est faible, une augmentation de la proportion de servitisation dans les exportations manufacturières promouvoir les émissions de carbone du commerce d'exportation, mais lorsque le niveau de servitisation est élevé, l'augmentation de la proportion de servitisation réduira plutôt les émissions de carbone. (2) L'effet d'échelle et l'effet structurel causés par la servitisation de la fabrication entraîneront une augmentation des émissions de carbone. (3) L'effet technologique, l'effet capital étranger et l'effet de régulation environnementale apportés par la servitisation n'ont aucun effet sur la réduction des émissions de carbone
In the process of manufacturing servitization, Chinese government pays great attention to two questions, namely, the relationship between manufacturing servitization and financial performance of China’s manufacturing enterprise, and the relationship between manufacturing servitization and environmental performance in the context of China's deteriorating environment. Based on the specific data from China, the impact of manufacturing servitization on enterprise financial performance and environmental performance are analyzed in this thesis.Regarding to the first problem, an empirical study from the perspective of regional heterogeneity, sub-industry heterogeneity, and type heterogeneity is conducted. The impact of manufacturing servitization of 30 sub-industries, 31 provinces (cities) and 4 different types of enterprises on financial performance of China is discussed by using the data obtained from 512 manufacturing enterprises. Four major conclusions can be drawn: (1) Overall, there is a positive nonlinear relationship between servitization and financial performance of China's manufacturing enterprises. (2) In the state-owned manufacturing enterprises and private manufacturing enterprises, the impact of servitization on financial performance of enterprises presents a “saddle type”. (3) Servitization cubed of six provinces(Jiangsu, Fujian, Zhejiang, Anhui, Guangdong and Guangxi) passed the significance test, indicating the nonliner relationship between manufacturing servitizaion and financial performance. (4) Servitization cubed of 9 sub-industries passed the significance test, suggeting the nonliner relationship between manufacturing servitizaion and financial performance. These sub-industries are agriculture sideline products processing industry (C13), food manufacturing industry (C14), textile manufacturing (C17), manufacturing of chemical raw materials and chemicals (C26), pharmaceutical manufacturing industry (C27), ferrous metal smelting and calender processing industry (C31), non-ferrous metal smelting and calender processing industry (C32), general equipment manufacturing (C34), railway, ship, aerospace and other transport equipment manufacturing (C37). Besides, there is a positive linear relationship between servitization and financial performance in the electrical machinery and equipment manufacturing industry (C38).For the second problem, the global value chain not only brings trade in value added, but also forms a global trade carbon emission chain. The value-added decomposition method better considers servitization characteristics, it is a more comprehensive explanation of the regional and industrial sources of manufacturing servitization. An study based on the global value chain point of view is conducted to present the relationship between manufacturing servitzation and environmental performance, it can be concluded that: (1) When servitization level is low, an increase in the proportion of servitization in manufacturing exports will promote carbon emissions of export trade, but when servitization level is high, the increase in the proportion of servitization will instead reduce carbon emissions. (2) The scale effect and structural effect caused by manufacturing servitization will lead to the increase of carbon emission. (3) The technological effect, foreign capital effect and environmental regulation effect brought by servitization have no effect on carbon emission reduction

The integration of products and services into a bundled product/service offering by manufacturing organisations is seen as a global trend in today’s competitive business environment. The shift of product-based manufacturers towards offering business solutions and value-added services to consumers is termed as ‘Servitization’. Contrary to the potential benefits expected by adding service activities to the offerings, advocates voice their concerns towards experiential problems and challenges in employing the servitization strategy – termed as ‘Servitization Paradox’. Nevertheless, the shift from product-based delivery to a service-based provision has the potential to significantly impact on developing sustainable and eco-friendly environment. To provide greater insights to the servitization phenomenon, this paper presents a comprehensive analysis of the servitization implementation in manufacturing organisations. In order to respond to the latter, we propose the following three research questions “Q1 – what are the different types of servitization strategies”, “Q2 – what are the different servitization definitions”, “Q3 – what are the potential benefits in selecting a servitization strategy?”, “Q4 – what are the challenges in transitioning towards servitization?”. A systematic literature review is carried out to understand the past trends and extant patterns/themes in the servitization strategy research area, evaluate contributions, summarise knowledge, thereby identifying limitations, implications and potential further research avenues. The key findings confirm servitization studies have contributed both conceptually and empirically to the development and accumulation of intellectual wealth to the manufacturing operations and supply chain discipline. Moreover, the findings clearly indicate the potential of servitization in transitioning manufacturing organisations (e.g. benefits) and utilising innovative technologies to generate business value. Nevertheless, some voices are backing further research/development in the area of servitization due to the several existing challenges.

The digital revolution has led to a drastic transformation of electronics manufacturing industries globally. A growing number of companies are continually investing in digital technologies to remain competitive. Artificial Intelligence (AI), Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), Big data, Robotics, etc. and smart devices have been widely adopted to improve efficiency, connectivity, and productivity of businesses. To cope with increased competition and customer demands, electronics manufacturing companies have broadened their interest in service innovation. However, companies pursuing a servitization strategy often lack an established framework i.e. method and tools to design new services. Besides, research indicates that existing frameworks with the potential to support this development are not contextualized to the electronics manufacturing industry. This design study, therefore, evaluates and proposes how the Integrative PSS approach can be adapted to suit the electronics manufacturing context to support services. The findings suggest that some models used in this approach were found to be unfavorable in the development of services. In such cases, the study contributes by providing suggestions on what models to adapt and how in the integrative PSS approach to support electronic manufacturing companies in their servitization process. The artifact is an exaptation since a known solution is extended to solve a problem in a new context and of the type instantiation.

Bakgrund: Tjänstefiering i tillverkningsföretag är ett aktuellt ämne där företag övergår från att endast sälja varor till att erbjuda kombinationer av varor och tjänster. Denna förändring är inte helt enkel eftersom företaget måste förbättra attityden mot tjänster i företagskulturen samt upprätta lämplig infrastruktur för produktionen av tjänster. Genom att använda sig av extern tjänsteleverans där man samarbetar med en annan part är det möjligt att bli mer flexibel och dela riskerna. Syfte: Syftet med denna uppsats är att identifiera och kategorisera utmaningar med tjänsteproduktion för en serviceorganisation i ett tillverknings-företag. Vidare analyserar vi även hur användningen av externa tjänste-leverantörer påverkar dessa utmaningar. Genomförande: Genom att göra en fallstudie på ett tjänstefierat tillverkningsföretag i Sverige, och intervjua fyra chefer inom serviceorganisationen har vi haft möjlighet att utöka och fördjupa den nuvarande litteraturen som handlar om utmaningar med extern tjänsteleverans. Teori: Ett teoretiskt ramverk med utmaningar i de tre delarna av tjänste-produktion har skapats; tjänsteutveckling, intern organisatorisk design och leverans av tjänster. Slutsats: Att använda sig av externa partners vid leverans av tjänster medför flertalet utmaningar för en serviceorganisation i ett tillverkningsföretag. Vår studie visar även att extern leverans av tjänster påverkar vissa utmaningar med tjänsteutveckling såväl som med intern design av en organisation.

Анотація:
Recent trends towards service orientation make manufacturing, especially in developed economies, to move into a more service oriented strategy. One solution is to fulfill customer requirements by a product and its after-sales services. However, the actual impact of this transformation on manufacturers has never been explored. This study aims to understand how evolution of service in terms of service-width and length takes place over time, and how it impacts on the manufacturer and is impacted from it. We carry out a longitudinal case-based study on a particular service family (iTune) in consumer electronics using Pearson correlation and linear regression using SPSS software package. Considering consistent intention to improve existing ones and introduce new services, following results are gained: (1) Manufacturing with higher research and development capabilities are expected to have great potential to have strong after-sales portfolio both in terms of service-width and length. A strong portfolio in this type of manufacturing is expected to bring economic advantage. (2) Manufacturing with higher liabilities is expected to have more economic advantage in increasing service-width. (3) Manufacturing with robust infrastructure are expected to have more economic advantage in increasing service-length.
