Practice Research in the Human Services: A University-Agency Partnership Model offers a practical approach to conducting practice research in the field of human services. This evolving form of applied research seeks to understand practice in the context of the relationships between service providers and service users, between service providers and their managers, between agency-based service providers and community advocacy and support groups, and between agency managers and policymakers. Practice research represents a form of evidence-informed practice that involves a wide array of research designs and methods, in contrast to the narrower emphasis on experimental designs that characterizes evidence-based practice. The emerging principles and practices associated with practice research highlight: (1) including multiple, diverse stakeholders, (2) maximizing and negotiating participation, (3) promoting practitioner engagement in all phases of the research process, and (4) developing new identities for participants as research-minded practitioners and practice-minded researchers. The book is designed for researchers, practitioners, service users, and students, and it focuses on concrete experiences that illustrate the processes and activities involved in a specific, locally negotiated model of practice research. The book describes multiple practice research studies across an array of fields of practice in the human services, focusing on the research questions, designs, roles and relationships that have been developed in the context of a university-agency practice research partnership. These descriptions and stories are used to construct a comprehensive, detailed picture of the research process. Based upon these descriptions, the book synthesizes a set of broader principles and guidelines for practice researchers.

Partnership-based was widely practised in the pre-Islamic period. The practice was so commonly prevalent among the muslim and non-muslim.This book is hoped to be of assistance to those who wish to discover the shariah contracts for partnership and the methods of structuring the current Islamic financial products and instruments through adopting either an existing Islamic contract or by combining two or more thereof. As for students and lecturers, this book is sought to be a reference for Islamic banking and finance related courses. It can also be a reference to the general members of the public who are interested to learn about the basic principles in the paramaterizing the shariah rulings for Islamic partnership contracts and to obtain issues about the Islamic banking and financial products. All readers may realize, that the first two chapters have briefly discussed the introduction to fiqh and shariah and the rule-making process of the areas in Islamic law.The main purpose of the book is to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the principles and basis of adopting the shariah contracts for Islamic financial products, as well as enabling the harmonization of the Islamic financial practices into shariah parameters of each contract.Nevertheless, the basic and important discussion on fiqh, shariah and the procedure of law-making process is believed tobe sufficiently covered in this book.

This chapter gives a reflective account of a values-based model of involuntary psychiatric seclusion and treatment (henceforth “involuntary treatment”) adopted in the training materials produced by the UK government to support implementation of its Mental Health Act 2007 and associated Code of Practice. Values-based involuntary treatment supports balanced decision-making on individual cases within a framework of shared Guiding Principles. A critical factor in developing the model was partnership between stakeholders representing the plurality of value perspectives embodied in the Guiding Principles. Values pluralism however has not been widely reflected in practice. Possible reasons for this include a fault-line in values-based practice. This has been focused on individual decision-making whereas the decisive influences on involuntary treatment have turned out to be social and political. Broadening the philosophical resources of values-based practice to include those of political philosophy may contribute to the development of more effective approaches to values-based involuntary treatment.

In this volume, after a brief discussion of the phenomenology of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the current guidelines and clinical consensus surrounding treatment, and the limitations of available treatment supported by sufficient evidence necessary to receive endorsement in practice guidelines, emerging treatments were described that demonstrate varying degrees of promise for relieving the suffering associated with PTSD. Both clinical experience and the most current practice guidelines support the notion that successful treatment requires a partnership between patient and provider, and a concerted effort by the clinician to “meet the patient where he or she is at” in terms of treatment approaches. Therefore, we hope the modalities described in this book encourage creative treatment approaches tailored to individual patient needs and desires based on a mutual understanding of the potential benefits and limitations of available alternatives.

Steve Kempster and Ken Parry introduce an unconventional research design and data collection method called co-constructed analytic auto-ethnography. This is based on a collaborative partnership between researcher and participant. The collaboration first involves an in-depth exploration of the participant’s socially constructed experience. The approach then reaches beyond that experience by testing the resonance of the insights generated with those of others who have been through similar experiences. Co-constructed analytic auto-ethnography can thus explore subjects that are difficult to access with traditional qualitative and quantitative methods. The approach is illustrated by a study that involved a collaboration between an academic and a senior manager, exploring the inter-related phenomena of emotional labour and authenticity in leadership practice. Dismissing criticism of auto-ethnography as ‘confessional tales’, the chapter concludes that this is a rigorous, insightful, and valuable research approach.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPPA) is an economic partnership pact negotiated by 12 countries in three continents, namely Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, United States and Vietnam. The TPPA has evolved into the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), when the United States pulled out from the multilateral free trade deal in 2018. Malaysia began negotiations on the TPPA in August 2010, and participated as a full negotiating member from October 2010 onwards. The TPPA itself was based on the United States-Korea Free Trade Agreement (KORUS), which was completed in 2011. This agreement provided a benchmark to decide and evaluate on several issues in the CPTPP. The overall intent of the CPTPP is a simple one: it is to extend non-discriminatory practices to all CPTPP members. This does not mean that regulations and restrictions will not exist that such regulations will apply equally to Malaysian and non-Malaysian CPTPP members. Contentious issues in the CPTPP will be analyse and discuss in this book. Is the Malaysian economy ready for the CPTPP rules especially in the financial and capital markets? To what extent that Bank Negaras ability to retain their power to intervene when either the balance of payments or the currency is felt to be under threat with CPTPP? What are the impacts of CPTPP to the real economic side of the Malaysian economy? Will national rights are being relinquished under CPTPP? How about the concern over investor-state dispute settlement (ISDS)? This book will address these issues in an objective and rational manner.

In this chapter, four case studies offer practical examples of implementation approaches that can accelerate evidence-based cancer prevention. The applied knowledge from the cases adds to the understanding that culture, context, politics, and partnership are key elements in driving health improvement, and although not always well understood or easily measured, they are a reminder that cancer prevention and care delivery exist within a complex system. In considering transformations in health care, moving from a linear and deconstructed model of delivery to consider complex adaptive models that could drive better outcomes was key to improved outcomes. Similarly, understanding context and complexity is a key consideration for implementing cancer prevention and control interventions into existing multisector social systems, be they health care, community, or statewide systems.

This chapter highlights how within Western medicine’s partnership with the Abrahamic traditions, there were three foundational values informing why and how medicine should be practiced in caring for the sick: (1) the human body cannot be treated apart from the soul, (2) hospitality is the foundational motive driving clinicians and hospitals, and (3) medicine is a divine gift. The Abrahamic traditions imbued into medicine these understandings, justifying medicine’s proper use based on theological grounds. This theology is most clearly embedded in early encounters with Hippocratic medicine, which pushed Jewish and Christian thinkers to articulate perspectives that have penetrated these traditions from that time onward. As part of the larger argument of the book, it highlights how the Abrahamic traditions approached illness and medicine in order to better contextualize subsequent chapters that compare these traditional Western religious values to secular medicine.

A community school differs from other public schools in important ways: it is generally open most of the time, governed by a partnership between the school system and a community agency, and offers a broad array of health and social services. It often has an extended day before and after school, features parent involvement programs, and works for community enrichment. How should such a school be structured? How can its success be measured? Community Schools in Action: Lessons from a Decade of Practice presents the Children's Aid Society's (CAS) approach to creating community schools for the 21st century. CAS began this work more than a decade ago and today operates thirteen such schools in three low-income areas of New York City. Through a technical assistance center operated by CAS, hundreds of other schools across the country and the world are adapting this model. Based on their own experiences working with community schools, the contributors to the volume supply invaluable information about the selected program components. They describe how and why CAS started its community school initiative and explain how CAS community schools are organized, integrated with the school system, sustained, and evaluated. The book also includes several contributions from experts outside of CAS: a city superintendent, an architect, and the director of the Coalition for Community Schools. Co-editors Joy Dryfoos, an authority on community schools, and Jane Quinn, CAS's Assistant Executive Director of Community Schools, have teamed up with freelance writer Carol Barkin to provide commentary linking the various components together. For those interested in transforming their schools into effective child- and family-centered institutions, this book provides a detailed road map. For those concerned with educational and social policy, the book offers a unique example of research-based action that has significant implications for our society.

India’s defence interactions with Southeast Asia were formed by the uncertain strategic configuration emerging in Asia at the end of the Cold War. India’s defence interactions with Southeast Asia were the outcome of the uncertain strategic configuration which emerged in Asia at the end of the Cold War. Additionally, asAs India’s economic interaction with the region grew, so did the need to protect its line of communication through Southeast Asia. Two sets of strategic strategy drive India’s defence interactions in Southeast Asia: the perceived imperative to be the predominant power in the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, which borders Southeast Asia and the willingness to assume a greater strategic role in Southeast Asia and the West-Pacific Ocean. Practically, however, India’s defence engagements have been defined by availability of strategical partners and the level of political trust between New Delhi and concerned countries, In practical terms however India’s defence engagements in the region have been defined by the availability of strategically meaningful partners and the level of political trust between New Delhi and each of the concerned countries, generating a hierarchy of partnership dominated by Singapore. This uneven development of India’s defence collaboration with Southeast Asia is partly mitigated by India’s participation in ASEAN’s consensus based multilateral fora, ARF and ADMM+., which consensus based approach and non-binding character make India’s favourite instrument in the region.

In the last decade in Australia teacher education has undergone numerous critical reviews, yet little on the teacher education front appears to have changed. Related to this, the teaching profession's struggles to cope with a changing world have been publicly documented and an increasing push for improved school outcomes from Australian governments, at both the state and federal level, appear as regular pieces in the national press. This forms a complex situation involving competing concerns, and raises questions concerning what to make of the situation and how to move teacher education forward in Australia. This book seeks to answer these questions by providing an evidence-based framework for investigating and directing teacher education practice into the future.

Managing Personality Disordered Offenders: A Pathways Approach describes the development and implementation of the Offender Personality Disorder (OPD) strategy in the UK. It begins by reviewing the existing evidence base for interventions for personality disordered offenders in the UK and elsewhere, before outlining the principles and requirements of the strategy and how it has been implemented in the community and secure settings in London and south-east England by the London Pathways Partnership (LPP). The LPP is a consortium of four mental health trusts working together with the probation and prison services to deliver community and secure OPD services: individual chapters, written by leaders within the LPP and wider OPD pathway, address key aspects, including staff selection and training; case identification and formulation; intervening in the community and in secure settings; service user involvement; and commissioning and joint working. Each chapter includes an authoritative review of the relevant evidence base, together with consideration of available options and the rational for the approach chosen for services in London. This is followed by a practical ‘how to do it’ guide and review of what has worked and what has not during the first four years of service delivery. Each chapter includes a section on evaluation and proposals regarding possible ‘next steps’. The book concludes with a formulation-based analysis of whether or not the OPD strategy has had any impact on its stated outcomes and how these might be re-evaluated as the mechanisms by which change is achieved in the pathway become better understood.

Divestment is a socially responsible investing tactic to remove assets from a sector or industry based on moral objections to its business practices. It has historical roots in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. The early-21st-century fossil fuel divestment movement began with climate activist and 350.org co-founder Bill McKibben’s Rolling Stone article, “Global Warming’s Terrifying New Math.” McKibben’s argument centers on three numbers. The first is 2°C, the international target for limiting global warming that was agreed upon at the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change 2009 Copenhagen conference of parties (COP). The second is 565 Gigatons, the estimated upper limit of carbon dioxide that the world population can put into the atmosphere and reasonably expect to stay below 2°C. The third number is 2,795 Gigatons, which is the amount of proven fossil fuel reserves. That the amount of proven reserves is five times that which is allowable within the 2°C limit forms the basis for calls to divest. The aggregation of individual divestment campaigns constitutes a movement with shared goals. Divestment can also function as “tactic” to indirectly apply pressure to targets of a movement, such as in the case of the movement to stop the Dakota Access Pipeline in the United States. Since 2012, the fossil fuel divestment movement has been gaining traction, first in the United States and United Kingdom, with student-led organizing focused on pressuring universities to divest endowment assets on moral grounds. In partnership with 350.org, The Guardian launched its Keep it in the Ground campaign in March 2015 at the behest of outgoing editor-in-chief Alan Rusbridger. Within its first year, the digital campaign garnered support from more than a quarter-million online petitioners and won a “campaign of the year” award in the Press Gazette’s British Journalism Awards. Since the launch of The Guardian’s campaign, “keep it in the ground” has become a dominant frame used by fossil fuel divestment activists.Divestment campaigns seek to stigmatize the fossil fuel industry. The rationale for divestment rests on the idea that fossil fuel companies are financially valued based on their resource reserves and will not be able to extract these reserves with a 2°C or lower climate target. Thus, their valuation will be reduced and the financial holdings become “stranded assets.” Critics of divestment have cited the costs and risks to institutional endowments that divestment would entail, arguing that to divest would go against their fiduciary responsibility. Critics have also argued that divesting from fossil fuel assets would have little or no impact on the industry. Some higher education institutions, including Princeton and Harvard, have objected to divestment as a politicization of their endowments. Divestment advocates have responded to this concern by pointing out that not divesting is not a politically neutral act—it is, in fact, choosing the side of fossil fuel corporations.
