In the cemeteries of Graeco-Roman Alexandria, archaeological investigations initiated more than a century ago attest to a usage of water for specifically funerary purposes : this is well documented by the frequent discovery of wells, cisterns, basins and drain pipes, whose most reliable remains can be found inside the antic hypogea themselves, or in direct connection with them. From a separately volume which inventory the hydraulic installations that were carried out, the different modalities of water management are first described in their diversity. The reasons that explain their presence are next analysed : water needs concerned the maintenance of locations, the irrigation of gardens, the care of corpses or the commemoration of the deceased, above ground and in the underground graves designed to accommodate the regular visits that the families paid to their dead. The imported and flourishing Greek culture often explain theses practices, but the special case of funerary libations, related to the belief of the thirst in the hereafter, allows one to emphasize the question of the specific influence of Egypt and its religious customs

During the seventeenth century and into the first half of the eighteenth century, organ music in northern Germany underwent tremendous change. From the simple forms of the sixteenth century, still represented by Jacob Praetorius (1586-1651), the repertoire evolves toward the great preludes, toccatas, chorales and chorale fantasies of Dietrich Buxtehude, Nicolaus Bruhns, Georg Boehm and Vincent Lubeck. Two reasons can explain this phenomenon : the first lies in the fact that all the musicians were in the Lutheran church and obligated to the prescriptions of the workship services; the second is the major development of organ-making, due, notably, to Arp Schnitger, and culminating in the four-manual, sixty-seven-rank organ wich the constructed at saint Nicolas in Hamburg (1586-1651). The parallel study of the composition, the liturgy, and the instrument-making brings to light the total symbiosis among them. This study confirms that, in northern Germany, not only are these three elements indissociable, but they constitute the culture of an entire people

A " Haitian Intellectual " is a person who, by all sorts of practices, product ideas that tend to define, question Haitian society. The study takes as its starting point, the Constitution of 1801 and ended with the restoration of the republican regime in 1859. Haitian intellectuals themselves as defenders of Haiti but also present as the embodiment of the capacity of countries access Civilization. This objective gives rise to a dual strategy of positioning. It is, first, to address the external stakeholders, as must be met defamatory writings of the ancient settlers and opponents of the project of a new state born of the struggle against slavery. It was then express a clear desire to distance themselves from other social groups in the country who do not share or do not master the accepted and dominant at the time social codes. The thesis therefore explores how such recognition sought out. The quest for recognition of intellectual expresses himself through a claim of Haiti's ability to access the civilization and progress, but also by the development of a knowledge that legitimize their political power. A practical effect of their application for recognition through the rehabilitation ofthe "black race. " This thesis shows how the Haitian intellectuals fail to think the relationship between universalism from their westemized training and the particularity of other cultures existing in Haitian society

The French notion of “ailleurs” is the central term of this thesis. It derives from Latin and can be translated as “elsewhere”, “in another place”, “other part”, “in another mind”, “at another home”, or “in a different set of ob-jects”. Despite such variations, the notion of ailleurs can be said to refer to ideas of “otherness” and “difference”. It also contains a spatial element, the act of “being away” or of “shifting”.The idea that one might occupy a space as “other” and conceive of the “subject” in relation to this otherness, is the main problematic of this work which aims to explore romanesque images of the “other place” and of the “other space” from the point of view of different contemporary travel writers. These travel writings are taken from 20th and 21st Century literature and represents different forms of literature and have different countries of origin, they are drawn together to create a profile of “romanesque traveller”. The present thesis therefore focuses on the conception of the space by approaching the concept of otherness and its reality from a romanesque, literary and contemporary perspective.Plurality and alterity are essential components of this work: of the elements that constitute a space, a place, a landscape, a view, a reality, and a presence.Over the course of three chapters, an examination is conducted of the themes and spatial notions related to the notion of ailleurs: ‘home’, ‘distance’, and ‘elsewhere’.In this work, an image of space is constituted that reflects the complexity of appearances, sensations, expressions, revelations, symbols, ideas, dreams, projects, intentions which exist as a consequence of the individual experiences that are acquired by the “romanesque traveller”. The six contemporary books that served as main sources for this thesis are: Towards Another Summer by Janet Frame (New Zealand), Terre des hommes by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (France), Başka Yollar by Enis Batur (Turkey), Le poisson-scorpion by Nicolas Bouvier (Switzerland), L’Africain du Groenland by Tété-Michel Kpomassie (Togo) and On the road by Jack Kerouac (United States)
