During the Baroque period, Luis De GÓngora y Argote (1561–1627) wrote the first Spanish-language closeted literature. Some three hundred years later, the challenging originality of his closet verse, openly studied and appreciated by a cultured, intellectual elite, played a pivotal role in the development of homosexual literature in the early-twentieth-century avant-garde movements of Spain and Latin America. This essay will briefly explore how twentieth-century Mexican avant-garde writers expressed the closet using baroque models. The thesis is that the rhetorical strategies of obscuritas provided Góngora an ideal instrument for representing the closet, which in literature is defined as a symbolic space that allows writers to represent and readers to recognize homosexuality in a heterosexual context. The pertinent OED definition of closet as an adjective reads, “secret, covert, used esp. with reference to homosexuality” (“Closet”). This recognized use of obscuritas is validated further in the observations of the Peruvian colonial writer Espinosa Medrano, one of Góngora's seventeenth-century commentators, who epitomizes the consolidation of baroque aesthetics in Hispanic America by the criollo elite. The final chapter in this tour of the baroque closet will examine how the Mexican avant-garde became aware of obscuritas through Federico García Lorca's Gongorine lectures and poetry.

Seventeenth-century literature in the Holy Roman Empire has rarely been discussed in general cultural histories about the European Baroque. The dramatic achievements of Shakespeare, Calderon, and Corneille, the inimitable poetry of the Metaphysicals and Marino and the mischievous adventures of the Spanish picaro have long overshadowed the literary accomplishments of the German Baroque. Even today many scholars are still content to dismiss the German seventeenth century as derivative while, in the opposite camp, loyal Germanists currently defend its uniqueness. As is generally known, literary developments in the Empire were slowed by a number of unfortunate circumstances. Geographical, confessional, and linguistic disunity strongly contributed to the parochialism of German Baroque letters. Local literary societies were widely scattered throughout the Empire from Silesia to the Rhine and communication between them was greatly hampered. The lack of a main cultural center similar to the artistic hubs of Paris or London further isolated the writers from each other. In addition, confessional differences not only segregated Catholic and Protestant poets, but also resulted in the simultaneous development of a Batoque Latin and German literature.

This work proposes the first critical edition, with annotations and introductory study, of Trabajos del vicio, afanes del amor vicioso (Madrid, 1680), written, as well demonstrated, by the Augustinian friar and preacher Simon de Castelblanco. Following ecdotic procedures - in connection with two complementary disciplines such as material bibliography and textual criticism - it has been possible to clarify the history of the text and prove its true author. The phase of the recensio reveals the existence of an edition of 1680, and an issue of 1684, which presents two states of edition. The issue is the product of the commercial strategy orchestrated by the printer-publisher Lorenzo García and the bookseller Juan Fernández with the intention of overcoming the lucrative failure that the commercialization of the novel must have entailed. The critical text, accompanied by an extensive annotation apparatus, has been rigorously fixed from the digitized copy of the BDH (R-8617), after verifying the equality of the rest of the copies. Given the scarcity of philological studies on the author and the novel, the preliminary study has used different documentary sources such as bio-bibliographic sourcebooks and compendia on Augustinian friars, dealing in depth with aspects related to the biography and work of Simon de Castelblanco. Likewise, through the perspective of the reception studies and the comparative analysis with other contemporary novels, Trabajos del vicio is framed within the corpus of the ―long novelǁ of the last quarter of the 17th century, characterized by an exemplary literature of strong ascetic morality

IV)
This thesis present a critical edition of the non-well known novel written and published by the fencing master of Philip IV, Luis Pacheco de Narváez, whose title is Historia ejemplar de las dos constants mujeres españolas, printed for the first time in Madrid by the Imprenta del Reino the year 1635. The work is divided into five chapters. In addition to the section dedicated to the edition of the novel (ch. V), which establishes an annotated text based on the only two known editions (Madrid, 1635 and Seville, 1744) with her list of variants, another four serve as context to it. Thus, we present a biography of Pacheco de Narváez (Baeza, 1560-Madrid, 1640), drafted in accordance with the preserved documentation, which is complemented by a literary list of references of this period about the figure and the work of the author, and an epigraph that wants to be a scientific consideration on his relations with Francisco de Quevedo (ch. I); a history of the text that studies the date of composition, the first edition and the complicated situation to publish novels in these years due to censorship (1625-1635), an aborted publication project and the second edition, as well as the critical trajectory of the novel and the absence of later editions (ch. II); a taxonomic study (although emphasis is placed on the morality present in the story) that implies its attachment to the genre of the so-called “courtly novel” (ch. III); and finally a chapter dedicated to the literary context, divided in two large parts: one dedicated to the sources and materials that the author could use to form the novel, and another that studies, by way of example, one of the literary topics present in the text and in the literature of the time: the descriptio tempestatis. This last part complements, as addition, with a study of the subject of the storm in the Jerusalen conquistada (1609) by Lope de Vega (ch. IV)

-- This article offers a close reading of Juan de Espinosa Medrano’s three-act play El amar su propia muerte in relation both to the author’s theatricalmodels in Spain and to his particular preoccupations as a Peruvian intellectual aware of his secondary position vis-à-vis Spanish cultural centrality. Following the practices of baroque imitatio, Espinosa Medrano succeeded in bringing together the multiple conventions and subgenres of the comedia nueva in such a way that he not only demonstrated a totalizing assimilation of his models but also interrogated their underlying logical structures. The result is an allegory of ingeniousness linked to the author’s overall project, made more explicit in such works has his famous Apologético en favor de Góngora, of Creole intellectual vindication.

Bances Candamo is to be found at a key inflection point for the history of literature and drama, between the baroque and the neoclassical poetry periods. The analysis of the music in his plays allows us to observe, from a privileged point of view, the evolution of some of the acoustic techniques that were being used during the Spanish Golden Age, and which by the end of the XVIIth Century had reached a point at which hyperbolic baroque style sought the collapse of the ear. In Bances' plays we can notice how the legacy is transformed and how the new concerns present themselves, especially those coming from the court of the Sun King, which will be permanently established during the kingdom of Philip V. It is important to note that these already had its antecedents during the regency of Marie Louise of Orléans, Charles II's first wife, coinciding with Bances Candamo's status as royal playwright. This doctoral thesis delves on the drama of the ultimate playwright of the Spanish Golden Age Theatre, also author of the last essay on dramatic theory. Being one of Calderón de la Barca's disciples, he takes the musical ingredient to the limit both in terms of quantity and of aesthetic means, and it is one of the main figures of the controversy over the morality of the theatre. His Teatro de los teatros is an outstanding piece of evidence on this respect. From this essay and his comedias, this thesis analyses the vocal music, the instrumental music and the dramatic dances from an innovative perspective, which allows us to revisit the classic categories and shed some light on the poetic-musical methods that had been forgotten by the philological and musicological criticism at this time, not concerning Bances nor any other playwright of the Spanish Golden Age to whom many aspects of this thesis apply.

The present study examines the figure of Mary Magdalene in the poetry of Lope de Vega and Richard Crashaw. I propose that while setting Mary Magdalene as the perfect example to convert, both authors could also express their conversion through the composition of two different poems: “Las Lágrimas de la Magdalena” by Lope de Vega and “Saint Mary Magdalene or, The Weeper” by Richard Crashaw. Each poem is centered on the idea of Mary Magdalene’s copious tears as the performative mark of her repentance which will effect her conversion. These two conversions are placed within two European literary traditions, Spain and England; as well as two different processes: on the one hand, Lope de Vega would go from a licentious life in his early years to becoming a priest at the end of his life, thus, devoting his life to religion. On the other hand, Richard Crashaw’s conversion would take place in between two conflicting religious beliefs, i.e., his transition from Protestantism to Catholicism. The other main goal of this work is studying these poems through the Baroque movement developed at the beginning of the seventeenth century. Hence, Lope de Vega’s poem is full of Baroque characteristics typical of the Spanish conceptism despite his reluctance consider his poetry Baroque. Crashaw, on his side, presents a poem which differs from the literary production in England in the first part of the seventeenth century. His Baroque sensibility would be, accordingly, influenced by his readings of the Spanish Golden Age authors. Therefore, anomaly, exaggeration, tempus fugit, conceptism, contradiction, paradox, and binary oppositions are Baroque characteristics both authors have in common in regard to their own particular description of both Mary Magdalene’s biblical stories and tears. Lastly, both poems will lead us to draw parallels with the Song of Songs in terms of spiritual conversation, and feminine identification.

This essay deals with an aspect of the formation process of the image of the Spanish Baroque theatre in France as an irregular and chaotic aesthetic form, which was also considered inferior with respect to the French classical model. In this theoretical construction, Lope de Vega embodies all of the Spanish theatre's flaws and, more generally, Hispanic literature's ones, in turn conceived as an expression of the Spanish nation’s spirit. This process of elaborating an image of an author at the service of the invention of a national stereotype is possible thanks to the early reception of some prose works by Lope (La Arcadia, El peregrino en su patria) which are enjoying a widespread diffusion in their translations. In a context marked by controversy surrounding the tragi-comédie, assimilated by his detractors to a simple theatrical deformation of novelistic material, Lope de Vega assumes the function of representative of a literature considered extraneous to any rule and to the separation between literary genres.

Following Latin America’s incorporation into the Spanish empire, myths rooted in cultural syncretism arose, which later became instruments for the conquest, oppression and transculturation of the indigenous peoples. This article focuses on the work of writers who, through the re-examining of said myths, sought to capture the essence of ‘Americanity’ without losing their universal sense. These myths are explored through the tone they acquired in Baroque literature, with a later focus on the sociocultural ‘myth’ associated with drug trafficking. Our findings are based on myth as an original principle may be opened a poetic interpretation.
