In the glass making industry, for glass wool insulation production, cobalt or nickel based alloys are used. They operate at high temperature (HT) under specific conditions resulting from glass melts contact and burner proximity. When the T exceeds 1200°C, the properties of these alloys are lost. Increasing T can only be obtained by changing the alloys’ based material. In this frame, choosing chromium alloys is relevant because of the properties its oxide Cr2O3 confers. However, due to its high brittleness at low T and its ductility at HT, Cr has to be alloyed with other elements. In this work, the oxidation behavior of Cr at 1300°C was studied. Then 3 different systems were characterized. Towards the oxidation behavior only one is compatible with a HT environment. Its characterization then its optimization as well as the study of the phenomena met at HT (oxidation, corrosion, ageing, …) were then begun

The flash method is extended to the 300K to 800K temperature range. Applied to semi-transparent media (S-T-M) and associated to a theoretical study of the coupled Conductions-Radiation 1-D transient heat transfer, it allows the direct measurement of the phonic diffusivity of glass. For this reason, the contribution of either the radiative boundary conditions (black or reflecting), the sample’s thickness, or the degree of semi-transparency (absorption coefficient) has been underscored. An experimental study has been carried out on five different glasses of various Fe2O3 content and has confirmed the theoretical predictions yielded by simulations made in the case of the gray medium. The spectral dependence of the absorption coefficient (“non-gray” medium) has been taken into-account through a multi-band model. It has no influence on the measurement of the phonic diffusivity in the prescribed conditions. Finally, we propose a new expression for the phonic conductivity of float glasses as a function of temperature

The oxide glasses form a class of materials with many fundamental and industrial interesting properties. Among these particularities we find the capability of such glasses to densify. Indeed, after a compression at pressures up to around ten gigapascal, a typical oxide glass presents an increase in density and several structural changes compared to the non-compressed glass. This observation led to the birth of the polyamophism theory in the decades 1990 and 2000. In the same way that a chemical compound can exist in different crystalline structure, it has been proposed that different amorphous structure exist, and that transitions between these amorphous states are possible.During this work, we tried to evidence the structural changes associated to the possible polyamorphism in oxide glasses. To do so, we followed two different approaches. In the old fashioned way, we probed in-situ the structure of different glasses during the compression, and we determined the dependence of the processes to the temperature (GeO2 glass) and to the polymerization degree (sodo-silicate glasses). In a second time, we compressed several similar glasses to perform permanent densification. Then we relaxed these densified glasses at high temperature, and we monitored in-situ the glassy structure during the transformation. This new approach allowed us to evidence the existence of an activated state during the relaxation of densified glasses to their pristine non-densified state. This transitory state is characterized by an increase of the inhomogeneity of the structure at all length scales, and seems to confirm the polyamorphism theory in oxide glasses

Thermoplastic polymer resins offer numerous benefits, such as their low cost, their better recycling and repair opportunities, their lightness and their long fatigue lifetime. This is why they are increasingly used in the composite material industry. However, due to their chemical nature, their mechanical response exhibits a temperature dependency even if the service temperature range is much lower than their glass transition temperature. This dependency has a knock-on effect, in a lower proportion but still significant, on the mechanical response of thermoplastic matrix composites. Due to the composite local stress distributions and their micro- and meso- structures, this dependency can also have a knock-on effect on their damage scenario. But structures such as wind turbine blades are brought to operate in a temperature range from -20 to 60°C. It is then necessary to study the temperature effect on the mechanical behavior and the damage scenario of thermoplastic matrix composites, to allow a better prediction of the fatigue damage evolution of wind turbine blades, in their temperature service range. Indeed, wind turbine blades are generally designed using a normative approach, which requires either consequent experimental campaigns in order to get the fatigue behavior of all the laminate composites in a structure such as a wind turbine blade, or the formulation of strongly conservative hypothesis, which affects the optimization of wind turbines blades design. To compensate this, a damage model allowing describing the strength, the stiffness and the residual strain of a unidirectional ply under quasi-static and fatigue loadings has been recently developed. The work presented here aim to validate the use of this model for a composite with an acrylic matrix reinforced with glass fibers, used for the manufacturing of some wind turbine blades in the first instance. The parameter identification and the validation rely simultaneously on mechanical tests under tensile and fatigue (tensile-tensile and tensile-compressive) loads on several layering and on physical analysis (microscope images under load, X-ray microtomography). Then, it is question to study how the temperature effect on the composite mechanical behavior and damage scenario affects the model parameters

The TEL process is used to produce glass wool at very high temperature. The main piece of this process is the “spinner”, which is exposed, in service, to numerous operating constraints (oxidation, corrosion, erosion and creep). This spinner is currently made of cobalt- or nickel-based superalloys and is fabricated by casting. To fiberize new glasses or to increase the current maximal fiberizing temperature, a new type of superalloy is required. Chromium is an ideal candidate to be the principal element of a new superalloy because of its very high melting point and its ability to develop a chromia protective scale against oxidation and corrosion at high temperature, reason for which it is usually added to many classical superalloys. During this Ph.D work, the synthesis and the study of more than a hundred of chromium-based alloys with different chemical compositions was done by casting. These alloys are brittle at room temperature during their cutting. Laboratory tests of hardness at room temperature, oxidation and 3 points flexural creep at high temperature were performed. Metallographic characterisations were carried out (XRD, SEM, EPMA) on all alloys in their as-cast state, after isothermal annealing or isothermal oxidation. The detailed study of simple alloys permitted to discover some compositions removing the brittleness problem of these alloys. Then, the enrichment of the composition of the alloys by addition of new elements, allowed to correct some inherent problems of chromium-based alloys

Vibration welding is a common process used in automotive industry to assembly polymer parts. For pristine polymers, welding ratio, defined as the ratio between weld strength and tensile strength of non-welded material, is close to 1. However, for glass-fiber reinforced polymers, welding ratios are around 0.6 at best. In order to understand this discrepancy, several grades of polyamide (PA) 6 and 66 reinforced with 30% glass fibers as well as polypropylene (PP) with 0, 20, 35 and 50 % glass fibers have been injected in plates and vibration welded. A linear relationship was obtained between tensile strength of welded and non-welded PA specimens and their glass fiber orientation. Correlations were also found when plotting weld strength of samples regarding their welded zone thickness. In addition, voids are present only in the welded zone of glass fiber reinforced specimens, indicating that these voids are due to reorientation of fibers during the welding process. Finally, finite element modeling of mechanical behavior up to failure has been applied on a meshed specimen with a welded zone. Results show an amplification and distribution of stresses in the three directions inside the welded zone due to geometrical confinement. This generated triaxiality promotes growth and coalescence of cavities in the welded zone, explaining the weakening of the macroscopic uniaxial stress at failure

The aim of this project was to optimise the material-process couple in the case of long glass fibre reinforced polyamides, so as to comply with industrial requirements of mechanicai and thermo-mechanical performance, The fibre segregation mechanisms occurring during the filling stage of the mould, which govern the local heterogeneities, have been first studied on a prototype part having a shape typical of industrial parts. A second part has focused on the flexural behavioul The modulus and maximal flexural stress have been estimated from structural models based on the multilayer morphological description (local fibre content, residual fibre lengths, fibre orientations...) of the composites. The results have been validated on an industrial part. Finally, the creep behaviour at high lemperature has been experimentally determined and then modelled (Findley's model). The need to take into account the thermal aging of the matrix in order to correct the load level during the loading time has also been pointed out
