Asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are two distinct lung diseases with distinctive clinical and inflammatory features. A proportion of asthmatic patients experience a fixed airflow obstruction that persists despite optimal pharmacologic treatment for reasons that are still largely unknown.
