Introdução A hipertensão arterial é influenciada por hábitos e estilos de vida e populações específicas como os Adventistas o Sétimo Dia são orientados a incorporar em suas práticas religiosas, hábitos e estilos de vida saudáveis. O objetivo principal desse estudo foi comparar a prevalência da hipertensão arterial em comunidades Adventistas do Sétimo Dia com comunidade não Adventista. Casuística e Métodos O estudo foi realizado na região sudoeste do estado de São Paulo com 547 pessoas (304 Adventistas e 243 não Adventistas). A pressão arterial foi medida com aparelho automático validado e de acordo com as VI Diretrizes Brasileiras de Hipertensão. A religiosidade foi avaliada pela Escala de Duke-DUREL; hábitos alimentares identificados pelo Questionário de Frequência Alimentar; apoio social pela escala de apoio social; consumo de bebida alcoólica pelo Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test AUDIT e transtornos mentais comuns pelo Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ 20). Foi adotado nível de significância de p<0,05. Resultados A maioria era do sexo feminino, idade de 41,5 anos, etnia branca. A prevalência de hipertensão foi menor nos Adventistas (p<0,05, 25,6% vs 35,4%). Os Adventistas foram diferentes (p<0,05) dos não Adventistas, respectivamente, em relação a: escolaridade média (39,8% vs 36,9%), ocupação autônoma (33,6% vs 14,8%), com companheiro(a) (72,4% vs 64,2%), casa própria (66,1% vs 65%), renda individual entre um e três salários mínimos (97% vs 90,9%), homens com menor índice de massa corporal (25,03±3,09 Kg/m2 vs 26,97±4,8 kg/m2) e menor circunferência abdominal (90,53±11,63 cm vs 97,19±12,69 cm), mais indivíduos ovolactovegetarianos e vegetarianos (20% vs 0,8%), não fumantes (85,5% vs 67,4%), maior tempo de abandono do tabagismo (14 anos vs 7 anos), praticantes de atividades físicas regulares (47,2% vs 25,8%), abstêmios de bebida alcoólica (100% vs 52,4%). No conhecimento sobre hipertensão os Adventistas se diferiram (p<0,05) dos não Adventistas, respectivamente, por: saberem menos que o tratamento da pressão alta pode evitar infarto (15,4% vs 12%) e problemas renais (58,2% vs 50,9%), reconhecerem que o exercício físico é importante para o controle da pressão (96,1% vs 89,3%), que jovens podem ter pressão alta (84,5% vs 77,8%), que é possível fazer alguma coisa para evitar a pressão alta (90,1% vs 83,1%), entretanto, reconhecem menos o papel da hereditariedade na hipertensão (59,9% vs 71,6%) e os valores de hipertensão (76,3% vs 86,4%). Pelo SRQ20 as mulheres Adventistas referiram mais sintomas que os homens Adventistas (p<0,05, 25% vs 15,3%). Os Adventistas mostraram níveis mais elevados em todas as dimensões da religiosidade e do apoio social (87 pontos vs 83 pontos). Na alimentação os Adventistas foram diferentes (p<0,05) dos não Adventistas, respectivamente, por: consumirem mais frutas e hortaliças (56,3% vs 39%); menos refrigerante e suco artificial (33,2% vs 19,9%) e menos carne com gordura visível (72,7% vs 39,8%). Os hipertensos Adventistas foram estatisticamente diferentes dos hipertensos não Adventistas, respectivamente, em relação a: escolaridade média (36,8% vs 15,5%); autônomos e do lar (30,8% e 30,8% vs 15,1% e 19,8%); alimentação vegetariana/ovolactovegetariana (19,2% vs 0%); prática de atividade física (49,4% vs 18,8%); tabagismo (0% vs 15,1%); etilismo (0% vs 39,2%), hipertensão referida (74,4% vs 84,3%); uso de medicamento anti-hipertensivo (58,3% vs 66,2%); acredita que a pressão alta tem cura (57,7% vs 32,6%), não acarreta problema renal (71,4% vs 51,3%) e não tem influência da hereditariedade (84,9% vs 66,7%); ausência de diabetes (91% vs 77,9%); usa outros tratamentos para hipertensão (51,8% vs 27,3%); e deixa de tomar remédio por conta própria (50% vs 29%). Em relação à presença de transtornos mentais comuns os hipertensos Adventistas referiram menos (p<0,05): ideia de acabar com a vida, sentir-se sem préstimo ou inútil, sentir-se incapaz de desempenhar um papel útil na vida, ter dificuldade no serviço e sentir-se cansado o tempo todo. Na avaliação da religiosidade e de apoio social os hipertensos Adventistas apresentaram níveis mais elevados. Não houve diferença no controle da pressão arterial entre os hipertensos Adventistas (44,8%) e hipertensos não adventista (58,9%), porém, os hipertensos não Adventistas controlados sabiam há mais tempo ser hipertensos (p<0,05, 5 anos vs 3 anos). Os Adventistas apresentaram maior controle pela MRPA quando comparado à medida casual (77,1% vs 44,8%). O efeito do avental branco esteve presente em 12% dos Adventistas, a hipertensão do avental branco em 24,2% e a hipertensão mascarada em 12%. Conclusão: A hipertensão foi menos prevalente entre os Adventistas, o que pode estar relacionado a hábitos e estilos de vida um pouco mais saudáveis apregoados pela religião, embora os índices encontrados estejam bem próximos aos dados de muitos estudos de base populacional. O fenômeno do avental branco encontrou-se bem próximo do estimado na população geral.<br>Introduction Habits and lifestyles influence arterial hypertension and specific populations like the Seventh Day Adventists receive orientations to incorporate healthy habits and lifestyles into their religious practices. The main aim of this study was to compare the prevalence of arterial hypertension in Seventh Day Adventist communities with a non-Adventist community. Sample and Methods The study was developed in the Southwest of São Paulo State, Brazil, and involved 547 people (304 Adventists and 243 non-Adventists). An automatic validated device was used for blood pressure measurements, in accordance with the VI Brazilian Hypertension Guidelines. The Duke-DUREL Scale was used to assess religiosity; food habits were identified through the Food Frequency Questionnaire; social support through the social support scale; alcoholic beverage consumption through the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test AUDIT and common mental disorders through the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ 20). Significance was set at p<0.05. Results Most participants were female, age 41.5 years, white ethnic origin. Hypertension prevalence levels were lower among Adventists (p<0.05, 25.6% vs. 35.4%). Differences between Adventists and non-Adventists were found (p<0.05), respectively, with regard to: mean education level (39.8% vs. 36.9%), self-employed occupation (33.6% vs. 14.8%), with a partner (72.4% vs. 64.2%), own house (66.1% vs. 65%), individual income between one and three minimum wages (97% vs. 90.9%), men with a lower body mass index (25.03±3.09 Kg/m2 vs. 26.97±4.8 kg/m2) and lower waist circumference (90.53±11.63 cm vs. 97.19±12.69 cm), more ovo-lacto vegetarian and vegetarian individuals (20% vs. 0.8%), non-smokers (85.5% vs. 67.4%), longer time since giving up smoking (14 years vs. 7 years), physical exercise (47.2% vs. 25.8%), teetotal (100% vs. 52.4%). Concerning knowledge about hypertension, differences between Adventists and non-Adventists were found (p<0.05), respectively, with regard to: know less that high blood pressure treatment can avoid stroke (15.4% vs. 12%) and renal problems (58.2% vs. 50.9%), acknowledge that physical exercise is important for pressure control (96.1% vs. 89.3%), that young people can have high blood pressure (84.5% vs. 77.8%), that something can be done to avoid high pressure (90.1% vs. 83.1%), but acknowledge less the role of hereditariness in hypertension (59.9% vs. 71.6%) and hypertension levels (76.3% vs. 86.4%). According to the SRQ20, Adventist women referred more symptoms than Adventist men (p<0.05, 25% vs. 15.3%). The Adventists showed higher scores in all religiosity and social support dimensions (87 points vs. 83 points). Regarding diet, the Adventists differed (p<0.05) from non-Adventists, respectively, with regard to: higher consumption of fruit and vegetables (56.3% vs. 39%); less soda and industrial juice (33.2% vs. 19.9%) and less meat with visible fat (72.7% vs. 39.8%). Statistically significant differences between Adventist hypertensive and non-Adventist hypertensive patients were found, respectively, with regard to: mean education level (36.8% vs. 15.5%); self-employed and housewives (30.8% and 30.8% vs. 15.1% and 19.8%); vegetarian/ovo-lacto vegetarian diet (19.2% vs. 0%); physical exercise (49.4% vs. 18.8%); smoking (0% vs. 15.1%); alcohol consumption (0% vs. 39.2%), referred hypertension (74.4% vs. 84.3%); anti-hypertensive medication use (58.3% vs. 66.2%); believes that high pressure is curable (57.7% vs. 32.6%), does not cause renal problems (71.4% vs. 51.3%) and that there is no hereditary influence (84.9% vs. 66.7%); absence of diabetes (91% vs. 77.9%); uses other hypertension treatments (51.8% vs. 27.3%); and stops taking medication on his/her own account (50% vs. 29%). As for the presence of common mental disorders, less references (p<0.05) were found among Adventist hypertensive patients for: idea to end ones life, feeling helpless or useless, feeling incapable of playing a useful role in life, having difficulty at work and feeling tired the whole time. In the assessment of religiosity and social support, Adventist hypertensive patients showed higher scores. No differences were found in blood pressure control between Adventist hypertensive (44.8%) and non-Adventist hypertensive patients (58.9%), but controlled non-Adventists hypertensive had been aware of the diagnosis longer (p<0.05, 5 years vs. 3 years). Adventists showed higher levels of control according to HBPM in comparison with casual measures (77.1% vs. 44.8%). The white-coat effect was present in 12% of Adventist patients, white-coat hypertension in 24.2% and masked hypertension in 12%. Conclusion: Hypertension prevalence levels were lower among Adventists, which can be related to the somewhat healthier habits and lifestyles this religion defends, although the rates found are quite close to data in many population-based studies. Rates for the white-coat phenomenon were very close to general population estimates.

This dissertation presents the different interpretations that the main theological streams
of the Seventh Day Adventist Church have given to the writings of Mrs. Ellen G. White
on the Subjects of Righteousness by Faith, the Human Nature of Christ and the
Heavenly Sanctuary. The writings have been interpreted to understand the nature of
Mrs. White's theological beliefs on such subjects.
Over the past fifty to ten years, the Seventh Day Adventist Church has experienced
numerous significant changes, and what once was seen as a monolithic theology has
suffered significant fractures. Adventist writers have stated clearly that within this
church there are at least three different theological sects with different beliefs on the
core doctrines or pillars of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. These sects are called the
Historical, Evangelical and General Conference or Mainline Adventists. These
theological sects have interpreted the writings of Mrs. Ellen G. White to serve as a basis
for their beliefs.
It is the goal of the researcher to attempt a non-biased interpretation of Mrs. White's
writings, including her theological views and interpretations on the doctrines of
Righteousness by Faith, the Human Nature of Christ and the Heavenly Sanctuary.
This dissertation evaluates Mrs. White's work and how she has interpreted the doctrines
stated before, and attempts to bring to light what she has said about them. The main aim
of the study is to make a comparative study of Traditional and Evangelical Adventists in
order to determine which represents true Adventism and to reconcile the two in the light
of Scripture. To this end, the dissertation studies the historical evolution of the Seventh-day
Adventists, the doctrinal position of Traditional Adventists, and the doctrinal
position of Evangelical Adventists; compares Traditional and Evangelical Adventists
and outlines the doctrinal differences between the two; and evaluates the two positions
in the light of Scripture to determine whether the two can be reconciled with one
another. The central theoretical argument of this study is that reconciliation and healing
of the divisions in the Seventh-day Adventist Church is possible.
This study was initially undertaken in quest of an academic understanding of the
historical and contemporary theological doctrines and disputes in my Church, in the
hope of resolving some of my own concern and confusion about what seemed to be
difficult and often obscure tenets and teachings. As my readings and research
progressed, however, the ultimate goal of the project changed somewhat; I came to the
view that a final, absolute interpretation of Church doctrines and theological issues was
not possible in purely human terms. Instead, I came to feel that a higher purpose could
be served by my study, if it contributed in some way or another to the reconciliation and
ingathering of the disputing schools within the Church. It is in this spirit that I present
the work that follows-- not to pit these schools against each other or prove the
correctness of one particular position or viewpoint, but to urge the leaders and members
of the Church to enter into a new stage of historical development, where concerns about
narrow areas of interpretation give way to a larger spirit of Christian fellowship and

Previous issue date: 2015-09-24<br>This research aims to analyze the development of Adventist mission in the city of São Paulo looking for an urban center Missiological model. São Paulo, one of the largest metropolis in the world has a plural cultural background, not only for the active forces of modernism, secularism, globalization and post-modernism. The composition of the city's population has a plural ethnic genesis. Besides the indigenous native, white European colonists and African slaves’ matrix, since the early nineteenth century others immigrants, Europeans and Asians, have arrived. In the first decades of the twentieth century, Brazil was the country that received more immigrants in the world. It is estimated that in the 1920s, only a third of the total population in the city of São Paulo were Brazilians, the rest was composed of immigrants. The insertion of Adventism in São Paulo took place by foreigners’ missionaries who worked first with other immigrants before evangelize and develop the Adventist mission with local Brazilians. Somehow, those early events have made a mark in São Paulo’s Adventist mission. São Paulo is now the city with the highest total number of Adventists in the world and the only one with ethnic Adventist churches for five distinct ethnic groups: Japanese, Korean, Jewish, Arab and Bolivian / Peruvian. This research looks for the formation of a cultural sensibility in the São Paulo’s Adventism that allowed it to get acquainted with the cultural diversity of the metropolis.<br>Esta pesquisa objetiva analisar o desenvolvimento da missão adventista na cidade de São Paulo em busca de um modelo missiológico para centros urbanos. São Paulo, uma das maiores metrópoles do mundo tem uma formação cultural plural, não apenas pelas forças atuantes da modernização, secularização, globalização e pós-modernidade. A composição da população da cidade possui uma gênese étnica plural. Além da matriz autóctone indígena, do colonizador branco europeu e dos escravos africanos, desde o início do século XIX chegaram outros imigrantes, europeus e asiáticos. Nas primeiras décadas do século XX, o Brasil foi o país que mais recebeu imigrantes em todo o mundo. Estima-se que nos anos de 1920, apenas um terço da população na cidade de São Paulo fosse de brasileiros, o restante era composto por imigrantes. A inserção do adventismo em São Paulo se deu por missionários imigrantes que trabalharam primeiro com outros imigrantes antes de evangelizar e desenvolver a missão adventista com os brasileiros nacionais. De alguma forma, esse início deixou marcas na missão adventista paulistana. São Paulo é hoje a cidade com o maior número total de adventistas no mundo e a única com Igrejas Adventistas étnicas que atendem cinco grupos étnicos distintos: japoneses, coreanos, judeus, árabes e bolivianos/peruanos. Introdução Hábitos e estilos de vida inadequados podem contribuir para a hipertensão arterial. Para os Adventistas, a religião preconiza hábitos de vida saudáveis. O objetivo principal desse estudo foi avaliar a prevalência da hipertensão nos Adventistas, comparando a cidade de São Paulo com o interior paulista. Casuística e Métodos Foram estudados 264 Adventistas com avaliação de dados biopsicosocioeconômicos, religiosidade e antropométricos. A pressão foi medida com aparelho automático validado. A religiosidade foi avaliada pelo questionário DUKE DUREL; apoio social pela Escala de Apoio Social e a presença de transtornos mentais comuns pelo Self-Report Questionnaire. Foi adotado nível de significância de p<0,05. Resultados A maioria dos participantes era do sexo feminino, com sobrepeso/obesidade, elevado apoio social e religiosidade, ausência de transtornos mentais comuns e idade 41,17±15,27 anos. Não houve referência de tabagismo e etilismo. Os Adventistas da capital foram diferentes (p<0,05) aos do interior, respectivamente, quanto a: escolaridade superior (62% vs 36,6%); ocupação, ter vínculo empregatício (44%) vs autônomos (40,9%); renda familiar (8,39±6,20 vs 4,59±4,75 salários mínimos) e individual (4,54±5,34 vs 6,35±48 salários mínimos); casal responsável pela renda familiar (35% vs 39,6%); ser vegetariano (11% vs 3%); pressão arterial (115,38±16,52/68,74±8,94 vs 123,66±19,62/74,88±11,85 mmHg); etnia branca (65% vs 81,1%); casados (53% vs 68,9%); menor apoio social no domínio material (15,7±5,41 vs 16,9±4,32) e lembrar da última vez que mediu a pressão (65% vs 48,8%). A prevalência total de hipertensão foi 22,7%, sendo maior no interior do que na capital (27,4% vs 15%) e os hipertensos da capital estavam mais controlados (53,3% vs 35,6%). A análise multivariada indicou associação da presença de hipertensão arterial (OR Odds ratio) com: a) ser vegetariano (OR 0,051), b) escolaridade lê/escreve (OR 3,938) e 1º grau (OR 5,317) vs ensino superior, c) lembrar da última vez que mediu a pressão (OR 2,725), d) ser aposentado (OR 8,846) vs ter vínculo empregatício, e) casal responsável pela renda familiar (OR 0,422) vs participante único responsável. Os hipertensos da capital foram diferentes (p<0,05) em relação ao interior, respectivamente, quanto a: renda individual (8,90±9,76 vs 1,85±2,06 salários mínimos) e familiar (9,60±9,93 vs 3,37±2,27 salários mínimos); participante responsável pela renda familiar (60% vs 33,3%); faltar à consulta médica por esquecimento (100% vs 20%); pressão diastólica (79,26±10,73 vs 86,07±10,66 mmHg); ocupação (46,6% com vínculo empregatício vs 33,3% do lar); saber que tratar pressão alta evita problemas renais (60% vs 55,6%), derrame (80% vs 97,8%) e impotência sexual (26,7% vs 55,6%); referir diabetes (33,3% vs 11,1%) e colesterol elevado (46,7% vs 48,9%) e saber que tratamento da pressão alta inclui parar de fumar (69,2% vs 93,9%) e reduzir o sal da alimentação (84,6% vs 100%). O controle da pressão se associou com: idade (OR 1,063) e ser totalmente verdade a afirmativa as minhas crenças religiosas estão por trás de toda a minha maneira de viver (OR 5,763) quando comparado aos que afirmaram em geral é verdade. Conclusão: A prevalência de hipertensão nos Adventistas foi abaixo que a média dos estudos nacionais, sendo menor na capital do que no interior paulista, possivelmente em decorrência de melhor condição socioeconômica e hábitos de vida saudáveis.<br>Introduction Inadequate habits and lifestyles can contribute to arterial hypertension. For Adventists, religion recommends healthy life habits. The main goal of this study was to assess the prevalence of hypertension in Adventists, comparing São Paulo City with the state interior. Sample and Methods 264 Adventists were studied, considering bio-psychosocioeconomic, religious and anthropometric data. Pressure was measured using a validated automatic device. Religiousness was assessed using the DUKE DUREL questionnaire; social support through the Social Support Scale and the presence of common mental disorders through the Self-Report Questionnaire. Significance was set at p<0.05. Results Most participants were women, suffering from overweight/obesity, with high social support and religiosity levels, absence of common mental disorders and age 41.17±15.27 years. No reference was made to smoking and drinking habits. Adventists from the capital differed (p<0.05) from the interior, respectively, regarding: higher education (62% vs 36,6%); occupation, employment contract (44%) vs autonomous (40,9%); family income (8.39±6.20 vs 4.59±4.75 minimum wages) and individual (4.54±5.34 vs 6.35±48 minimum wages); couple responsible for family income (35% vs 39.6%); being a vegetarian (11% vs 3%); arterial pressure (115.38±16.52/68.74±8.94 vs 123.66±19.62/74.88±11.85 mmHg); white ethnic origin (65% vs 81.1%); married (53% vs 68.9%); less material social support (15.7±5.41 vs 16.9±4.32) and remembering the last pressure measurement (65% vs 48.8%). Total hypertension prevalence was 22.7%, with higher levels in the interior than in the capital (27.4% vs 15%) and hypertensive patients from the capital were more controlled (53.3% vs 35.6%). Multivariate analysis indicated that hypertension was associated (OR Odds ratio) with: a) being a vegetarian (OR 0.051), b) education level reads/writes (OR 3.938) and first year of secondary education (OR 5.317) vs higher education, c) remembering the last pressure measurement (OR 2.725), d) being retired (OR 8.846) vs having a job contract, e) couple responsible for family income (OR 0.422) vs participant sole responsible. The later differed (p<0.05) from interior patients, respectively, regarding: individual (8.90±9.76 vs 1.85±2.06 minimum wages) and family income (9.60±9.93 vs 3.37±2.27 minimum wages); participant responsible for family income (60% vs 33.3%); forgetting to attend a medical appointment (100% vs 20%); diastolic pressure (79.26±10.73 vs 86.07±10.66 mmHg); occupation (46.6% with an employment contract vs 33.3% housewives); knowing that treating high blood pressure avoids kidney problems (60% vs 55.6%), stroke (80% vs 97.8%) and sexual impotence (26.7% vs 55.6%); referred diabetes (33.3% vs 11.1%) and high cholesterol (46.7% vs 48.9%), and know that treating high blood pressure include smoke cessation (69,2% vs 93,9%) and reduce salt (84,6% vs 100%). Pressure control was associated with: age (OR 1.063) and when the assertion my religious beliefs underlie my entire way of living is considered completely true (OR 5.763) in comparison with those who asserted generally true. Conclusion: The prevalence of arterial hypertension among Adventists remained below mean levels in Brazilian studies, and was lower in the state capital than in the interior of São Paulo State, possibly due to a better socioeconomic condition and healthier life habits.

Previous issue date: 2014-02-20<br>This dissertation is the proposal of thinking children and religion, where I started the idea of junior pastors, and reaching observation of children in Adventist church evangelism. Start with a presentation, as I will talk about children, back to memories of my childhood. Do a general introduction, stating what will be presented in each chapter, from the choice of the name of the dissertation, the religion in the city of João Pessoa. Divided into four chapters that work. So I detail in the first chapter the methodology used and the role of the researcher to Sociology, stating what worked, and what did not, and showing brief field notes. Then follow the second chapter to bring observations, description, analysis and interpretation of the field studied in Sabbath School, the group of Primary Adventist church, a chapter, I could watch and see the contributions of evangelization for socializing children through school I attended the drawings I had with the children, and talks with them, and with teachers. I continue watching activities and data of the study group, with drawings. The third chapter is constituted as a theoretical chapter on children and childhood by examining theories about this social actor, the child, observing the concept of agency, and the union of religion and child concepts. The fourth chapter conclude the idea of evangelization and show socialization through which noted the church, uniting with theories that help to interpret the actions of children and adults Adventist church, because the concept of socialization helps to think about the concept of agency child. So also bring issues like body that socializes in religious education.I conclude by summarizing important ideas and concepts finalizing the text.<br>Essa dissertação tem a proposta de pensar crianças e religião, onde parti da ideia de pastores mirins, e chegando a observação da evangelização infantil na igreja Adventista. Inicio com uma apresentação, como vou falar sobre crianças, retorno a lembranças da minha infância. Faço uma introdução geral, informando o que vai ser apresentado em cada capítulo, passando pela escolha do nome da dissertação, a religião na cidade de João Pessoa. Dividi em quatro capítulos esse trabalho. Detalho assim no primeiro capítulo a metodologia usada e o papel do pesquisador para a Sociologia, informando o que deu certo, e o que não deu, e mostrando breves notas de campo. Depois sigo para o segundo capítulo que se constitui como um capítulo teórico sobre a criança e a infância, averiguando teorias sobre esse ator social, a criança; observando o conceito de agência, e da união dos conceitos criança e religião; continuo e mostro a socialização através do que observei na igreja, unindo com teorias que ajudam a interpretar as ações das crianças e adultos da igreja Adventista, pois o conceito de socialização que ajuda a pensar sobre o conceito de agência infantil. Assim também trago questões como o corpo que se socializa na educação religiosa. No terceiro e último capítulo trago observações, descrição, análise e interpretação do campo estudado, na Escola Sabatina, no grupo dos Primários da igreja Adventista, um capítulo, que consegui observar e ver as contribuições da evangelização infantil para a socialização, através das aulas que assisti, dos desenhos que tive com as crianças, e das conversas com elas, e com os professores. Prossigoobservando atividades e dados do grupo estudado, com desenhos. Concluo recapitulando ideias e conceitos importantes finalizando o texto.

Essa abordagem, entretanto, não exclui as peculiaridades de cada projeto adventista em áreas indígenas, com seus próprios indicadores de eficiência, e suas variadas recepções. O modelo de missão adventista desenvolvido no Peru a partir de 1910, principalmente entre os Aymara da região do Lago Titicaca, produziu expectativas a respeito dos trabalhos que poderiam ser realizados entre diferentes etnias. O caso das missões entre os Ashaninka também recebeu destaque nas publicações da igreja. Outro projeto de missão que repercutiu significativamente a partir de 1911 nas publicações adventistas ocorreu entre grupos Pemom, nas fronteiras entre o Brasil, a Venezuela e a Guiana. A existência de uma religiosidade marcadamente profética na região, o Aleluia, é um importante fator para a análise da conversão ao adventismo. Por fim, esta tese aborda o projeto missionário adventista da região do Rio Araguaia, a partir de 1927. De qualquer maneira, a missão no Araguaia serviu para divulgação de uma imagem filantrópica da igreja, que estaria interessada na \"pregação do evangelho\" e na \"civilização\" do índio brasileiro<br>The purpose of this dissertation is to demonstrate that, in the first half of the 20th century, in different adventist texts, there was a homogeneous representation of native Indians in South America. They are portrayed as if \"asking anxiously\" for the establishment of missions, for they were in need of \"civilization\". This approach, nevertheless, does not exclude the peculiarities of each adventist project in native Indian regions, with its own indicators of efficiency, and its varied receptions. The mission model developed in Peru from 1910 on, especially among the Aymara from the Lake Titicaca region, produced expectations regarding the works that could be accomplished among the different ethnic groups. The case of the missions among the Ashaninka also received prominence in the church\'s publications. Another mission project that significantly reverberated in adventist publications from 1911 on occurred among Pemom in the border between Brazil, Venezuela and Guiana. The existence of a deeply prophetic religiosity in the region, the Alleluia, is an important factor for analysis of the conversion into adventism. The theoretical background was based on the aspects of memory and religious transmission, especially its tension between continuity and rupture within the modernizing process. For this, the sociology of religious memory built by Halbwachs was chosen. This combination allowed us to analyze how the theology of the group studied articulates past events to justify beliefs and habits of the present. The delimitation of the corpus was found in the Revista Adventista, between 1906 and 2010, which was used as a mirror of a larger reality, the carrier of the transitions and continuities of the memory discourse. The work is structured through a content analysis together with a qualitative approach on the discourses. The logic of the chapters begins with the historiographical construction of the thought and development of brazilian and world adventism to later include the copies of the publication that deal with aspects of the use of the founding memory of the group, as well as all the apparitions of the terms "radio" "television" and "internet." As part of the results, we note how the Seventh-day Adventist Church's (SDA) conception of producing a rationalistic preaching based on reading and searching for the "correct" interpretation of the biblical text brings some important characteristics to this movement, shaping your missiology and worldview. The use of the founding past was seen through reports about the pioneers, notably Ellen G. White. We have also seen that there are re-significances of some constitutive bases of the identity of the movement, which defy the denomination in its attempt to remain faithful to its founding message. The research revealed an ambiguous relationship between brazilian adventism and the media, which is associated with the tensions arising from modernity. There is a tension experienced by the memory of the brazilian movement regarding the use and refusal of the communicational instruments. This relationship is mainly due to a utilitarian vision, which sees in the message delivered, and not in the medium itself, dangers to be avoided by the movement.<br>A presente tese discute a transmissão da memória religiosa do adventismo brasileiro, com foco no uso dos instrumentos comunicacionais eletrônicos (rádio, televisão e internet). O pano de fundo teórico se baseou nos aspectos da memória e da transmissão religiosa, principalmente sua tensão entre a continuidade e a ruptura dentro do processo modernizante. Para tanto, escolheu-se a sociologia da memória e da transmissão religiosa halbwaquiana. Essa junção nos permitiu analisar como a teologia do grupo estudado articula eventos do passado para justificar crenças e hábitos do presente. A delimitação do corpus foi encontrada na Revista Adventista, entre os anos de 1906 e 2010, a qual foi utilizada como um espelho de uma realidade maior, portadora das transições e continuidades do discurso. O trabalho se estrutura por meio de uma análise de conteúdo em conjunto com uma abordagem qualitativa sobre os discursos. A lógica dos capítulos se inicia com a construção historiográfica do pensamento e desenvolvimento do adventismo brasileiro e mundial para, depois, incluir os exemplares da publicação que abordassem aspectos da utilização da memória fundante do grupo, assim como todas as aparições dos termos “rádio”, “televisão” e “internet”. Como parte dos resultados, notamos como a concepção mantida pela Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia (IASD) em se produzir uma pregação racionalista, baseadas na leitura e na busca pela “correta” interpretação do texto bíblico, traz algumas características importantes a esse movimento, moldando sua missiologia e visão de mundo. Foi visível o uso do passado fundante, através de relatos sobre os pioneiros, principalmente Ellen G. White. Vimos também que existe ressignificações de algumas bases constitutivas da identidade do movimento ao longo do tempo, que desafiam a denominação na sua tentativa de permanecer fiel à sua mensagem fundante. A pesquisa revelou uma relação ambígua do adventismo brasileiro com os meios de comunicação, o que se associa com as tensões provindas da modernidade. Existe uma tensão vivida pela memória do movimento brasileiro quanto ao uso e recusa dos instrumentos comunicacionais. Essa relação se dá principalmente devido a uma visão utilitarista, que vê na mensagem proferida, e não no meio em si, perigos a se evitar por parte do movimento.

A century has passed after the creation of the first Adventist boarding school in Brazil (1915-2015). The world and society have changed and the concept of education has also changed. But the regime of Adventist boarding schools and educational philosophy remained unchanged. This thesis presents a vast literature which provides a rich and detailed look at the history of the foundation of the pioneers boarding schools in Brazil, and on their educational philosophy and practice. In view of the growth in Adventist boarding schools in Brazil and identified actions, we realize that the leadership of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Brazil is convinced that the maintenance of boarding schools is essential to meet the basic requirements of their educational philosophy, and is not willing to give up certain principles that judges are fundamental to fulfilling its educational mission. However, due to the demands imposed by social and educational changes in the postmodern condition, that same leadership realize that we live in a completely different world from where the foundations of Adventist Educational Philosophy were established, and therefore begins to allow and even promote some upgrades in the form of conducting the Brazilian Adventist boarding schools, approaching so with the reality that surrounds it<br>Os colégios adventistas em regime de internato foram criados no Brasil, à semelhança do modelo norte-americano, com o objetivo de preparar missionários para o cumprimento da missão da Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia, privando os alunos do convívio do mundo e oferecendo-lhes educação e preparo religioso associado ao trabalho no campo. Um século se passou após a criação do primeiro internato adventista no Brasil (1915-2015). O mundo e a sociedade mudaram e a concepção de educação também mudou. Mas o regime dos internatos adventistas e a filosofia educacional permaneceram inalterados. Esta dissertação apresenta uma vasta literatura que proporciona um olhar rico e minucioso sobre a história da fundação dos internatos pioneiros no Brasil, e sobre a sua filosofia e prática educacional. Em face do crescimento no número de colégios internos adventistas no Brasil e das ações apontadas, percebemos que a liderança da Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia no Brasil tem a convicção de que a manutenção dos internatos é fundamental para cumprir os requisitos fundamentais de sua Filosofia Educacional, e não está disposta a abrir mão de certos princípios que julga serem fundamentais para o cumprimento de sua missão educacional. Previous issue date: 2014-04-03<br>Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior<br>The main objective of the research was initiated to highlight the importance of the speech of Ellen White , an important religious leader of the nineteenth century in the United States , for the formation of a style and practice of life, which still characterizes the Adventists seventh day as regards health. Another, no less important objective was to compare the main concepts of Ellen Whites health and lifestyle with some contemporary scientific and academic concerns. To this end , this paper shows how the list of eight natural remedies proposed by White summarize the ideal of a healthy lifestyle still practiced by millions of Adventists, 100 years after the death of his Prophesy : clean air, water, adequate food, sunlight , physical exercise, rest , abstinence, and trust in God . Whites counsel were contrasted with cultural practices that relate religion and health , leading to the conclusion that the Adventist culture has proven to be the most appropriate in safeguarding health. This is because White presented a synthesis of elements of Jewish, Christian and Western culture. In this sense, its guidelines guarantee you a privileged place in the movement for health care reform in the United States that occurred in that country in the second half of the nineteenth century. Many of their boards are currently being put into practice by all those who care about the health, longevity, and fitness lifestyle with rules inspired by nature and a healthy spirituality.<br>O objetivo principal da pesquisa encetada foi o de ressaltar a importância do discurso de Ellen White, uma importante líder religiosa do século XIX, nos Estados Unidos da América, para a formação de um estilo e prática de vida, que ainda hoje caracteriza os adventistas do sétimo dia no que se refere a saúde. Outro, não menos importante objetivo, foi o de comparar os principais conceitos de Ellen White sobre saúde e estilo de vida com algumas preocupações científicas e acadêmicas contemporâneas. Para isso, este trabalho mostra como a lista de oito remédios naturais propostos por White sumarizam o ideal de uma vida saudável ainda praticada por milhões de adventistas, 100 anos após a morte de sua Profetiza: ar puro, água, alimentação adequada, luz solar, exercícios físicos, repouso, abstinência, e confiança em Deus. Os conselhos de White foram contrastados com várias práticas culturais que relacionam religião e saúde, levando-nos à conclusão que a cultura adventista tem se mostrado como a mais adequada na salvaguarda da saúde. Isto porque White apresentou uma síntese de elementos da cultura judaica, cristã e ocidental. Nesse sentido, as suas orientações garantem-lhe um lugar privilegiado no movimento de reforma da saúde nos Estados Unidos que ocorreu naquele País na segunda metade do século XIX. Muitos de seus conselhos estão sendo atualmente colocados em prática por todos aqueles que se preocupam com a saúde, longevidade, e a adequação do estilo de vida com as regras inspiradas na natureza e numa espiritualidade sadia.

H. Richard Niebuhr’s typology presented in Christ and culture. The research aimed to
trace the theological, social and communicational presuppositions behind the Adventist
thinking about TV that were inherited from the social history of the denomination. Thus,
it was chosen as a corpus of analysis the English-speaking Adventists editorial
publications about the relationship between the believer and the television. After a
historiagrafic analysis about the Adventism-TV problem and the reading of the Adventist
literature about TV a Niebuhrian typology was constructed based in a binomial structure.
As research results, it was observed that the responses of the religious movement to
Adventism-TV problem are multifaceted and complex, and can be better understood
through: (1) the identity marks revealed by the social history of the denomination, which
Millerite legacy is very influent and (2) the binary oppositions image-text, demonizationsacralization,
autonomy-manipulation, protagonism-assistance and abstinencemoderation.
In the analyzed literature, the Adventist thinking between the 1950s until the
early 1990s is characterized by strong rejection to the television media, because of the
idea of rivalry that is perceived between image and text in a denomination orientated by
the text. Furthermore, it is believed that the best option on the interaction with the TV is
abstinence because of the belief in the subliminal power and the mind control skill of
media. The Adventist thinking was also characterized by the notion that TV is the
protagonist of Christian spirituality, being responsible for promoting the sanctification or
eternal damnation. Adventist literature justifies the use of television only in a religious
context and missionary purposes, mainly due to the eschatological vocation and the
religious imperative of the proclamation of Jesus' return to Earth. However, the later
books of the corpus, published between 1990 and 2000, represent a shift in the
understanding of how should be the believer's interaction with the TV. Despite the
prevalence of text on the image endures and the predominance of idea of emergency,
other perspectives are privileged, among them the sacredness of the TV, which can now
also be used in “secular” context and not exclusively for evangelistic purposes, and
moderation as a practical solution to the problem Adventism-TV<br>A presente tese consiste em identificar e analisar o pensamento adventista sobre a
televisão com base na tipologia de H. Richard Niebuhr no clássico Cristo e cultura. A
pesquisa objetivou traçar as pressuposições teológicas, sociais e comunicacionais por trás
do pensamento adventista acerca da TV e que foram herdadas da história social da
denominação. Para tanto, foi escolhido como corpus de análise publicações editoriais
adventistas de língua inglesa que discorriam sobre a relação entre o crente e a televisão.
A análise documental das publicações se deu por meio de uma tipologia de matriz
niebuhriana construída a partir de binômios. Como resultados da pesquisa, foi possível
observar que as respostas do movimento ao problema adventismo-televisão são
multifacetadas e complexas, e podem ser mais bem compreendidas através: (1) das
marcas identitárias reveladas pela história social da denominação, cujo legado milerita é
bastante influente, e (2) das oposições binárias imagem-texto, demonização-sacralização,
autonomia-manipulação, protagonismo-coadjuvação e abstinência-moderação. Na
literatura analisada, o pensamento adventista entre os anos 1950 até início dos anos 1990
é caracterizado por forte rejeição à mídia televisiva, por conta da ideia de rivalidade que
se percebe entre imagem e texto em um movimento de orientação textocentrada. Além
disso, acredita-se que a melhor opção diante da interação com a TV é a abstinência, por
causa da crença no poder subliminar e de manipulação mental da mídia. O pensamento
adventista também se caracterizou pela noção de que a TV é protagonista na vida cristã,
sendo responsável por promover a santificação ou a condenação eterna. A literatura
adventista justifica o uso da televisão apenas em contexto religioso e para fins
evangelísticos, principalmente por conta da vocação escatológica e pelo imperativo
religioso da proclamação da volta de Jesus à Terra. Contudo, os últimos livros do corpus,
publicados entre os anos 1990 e 2000, representam uma mudança na compreensão
adventista da TV. Apesar da prevalência do texto sobre a imagem continuar e do
predomínio da ideia de urgência, outras perspectivas são privilegiadas, entre elas, a
sacralização da TV, que agora pode ser utilizada também em contextos “seculares” e não
exclusivamente para propósitos evangelísticos, o enfraquecimento da noção de TV como
obstáculo à santificação, e a moderação como solução prática para o problema
adventismo-televisão

Previous issue date: 2018-04-09<br>Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq<br>The main objective of this research was to analyze whether conscientious objection as a constitutional guarantee can bring effectiveness to the religious freedom of Seventh-day Adventists in the custody of the Sabbath, a sacred day dedicated exclusively to religious worship and spiritual activities. In order to reach this conclusion, it was tried to show the importance of religious freedom, in its aspects, freedom of conscience, freedom of worship, freedom of belief and the excuse of conscience. As a specific objective, the aim was to show the role of the secular State in the concreteness of religious freedom in a democratic country that respects fundamental human rights, especially freedom of belief and worship. The social relevance of research is justified insofar as many Seventh-day Adventists are deprived of their rights, when they cannot participate in public selections and contests, attend classes on Sabbath days, work on that day, since their conscience and their beliefs do not allow these activities to be performed during the holy hours of the Sabbath. The relevance of the research is made by pointing out solutions so that the sacred day of the Adventists takes effect before the difficulties in the Sabbath keeping and, in addition, contribute to the discussion on the subject before the oscillations in the decisions of the courts. For this purpose, bibliographical references of authors versed in this area were used to formulate conclusions and reach the objectives outlined. As a conclusion, it was pointed out that the solution for Adventists to enjoy the right to keep the Sabbath, without depriving themselves of the right to education, to participate in competitions is the granting of alternative services, as sanctioned by art. 5, VII of CF / 88<br>O objetivo principal desta pesquisa foi analisar se a escusa de consciência como garantia constitucional consegue trazer efetividade à liberdade religiosa dos adventistas do sétimo dia na guarda do sábado, dia considerado sagrado, dedicado exclusivamente ao culto religioso e atividades espirituais. Para alcançar essa conclusão, procurou-se mostrar a importância da liberdade religiosa, nas suas vertentes, a liberdade de consciência, a liberdade de culto, a liberdade de crença e a escusa de consciência. Como objetivo específico, buscou-se mostrar o papel do Estado laico na concretude da liberdade religiosa num país democrático e que respeita os direitos humanos fundamentais, em especial, a liberdade de crença e de culto. A relevância social da pesquisa se justifica na medida em que muitos adventistas do sétimo dia se veem privados de seus direitos, quando não podem participar de seleções e concursos públicos, assistirem aulas em dias de sábado, trabalharem nesse dia, já que sua consciência e sua crença não permitem exercer essas atividades nas horas sagradas do sábado. A relevância da pesquisa se faz por apontar soluções para que o dia sagrado dos adventistas se efetive diante das dificuldades na guarda do sábado e, além disso, contribuir para a discussão sobre o tema diante das oscilações nas decisões dos tribunais. Utilizou-se, para tanto, referenciais bibliográficos de autores versados nesta área a fim de se formular conclusões e atingir os objetivos traçados. Como conclusão, ressaltou-se que a solução para que os adventistas possam desfrutar do direito à guarda do sábado, sem se privarem do direito à educação, à participação em concursos é a concessão de prestações alternativas, conforme sanciona o art. 5º, VII da CF/88

Previous issue date: 2018-08-28<br>Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES<br>The present work presents a historical narrative of the Superbom factory.The need to research such an institution of the Seventh-day Adventist Church lies in rescues and have initial approximations of the history of this factory that was essential for the dissemination of the health message preached by the denomination. The objective this research was to present elements that show the health message of the denomination interacting with the development of the Superbom factory. As will be seen, the Adventist Review shows Superbom as being fundamental for the development of the movement in Brazil, so far, there are no researchers who have studied the subject. Here is the justification of the present work, to propose a first narrative of the factory, based on the organ of institutional disclosure, Adventist Review. If on one hand the factory had to seek modernization to meet the business demands, on the other, the institution had to suit market nuances. Thus, the adaptation of the products was a reality, although in content, the institution remained engaged with the health message of the denomination. As will be seen, the factory from its founding to the present day remained committed to the Second Advent message and White's instructions on health reform<br>O presente trabalho apresenta uma narrativa histórica da fábrica Superbom. A necessidade de pesquisar tal instituição da Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia está em resgatar e ter aproximações iniciais da história dessa fábrica que foi essencial para a difusão da mensagem de saúde pregada pela denominação. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi apresentar elementos que evidenciem a mensagem de saúde da denominação interagindo com o desenvolvimento da fábrica Superbom. Ainda que, como se verá, a Revista Adventista mostre a Superbom como sendo fundamental para o desenvolvimento do movimento no Brasil, até o momento, não existem pesquisadores que se debruçaram sobre o tema. Aí está a justificativa do presente trabalho, propor uma primeira narrativa da fábrica, baseada no órgão de divulgação institucional, Revista Adventista. Se por um lado a fábrica teve de buscar a modernização para atender as demandas comerciais, por outro, a instituição teve de se adequar as nuances do mercado. Assim, a adaptação dos produtos foi uma realidade, embora em conteúdo a instituição continuasse engajada com a mensagem de saúde da denominação. Previous issue date: 2010-10-25<br>The general objective of this study was to investigate how the Seventh-day
Adventist Church considers the elderly individuals in their personal and social
routine. It was carried out in the city of São Paulo, in two Adventist Churches
(Liberdade and Brooklin). Based on the qualitative approach and using the
interview as the investigation strategy, a script composed of 11 open questions
was developed and administered to 10 elderly people, 6 women and 4 men,
with diverse levels of schooling, aged between 60 and 90 years, who were
members of the Churches and who freely and spontaneously accepted to
participate in this study. The interviews were recorded and literally transcribed;
the questions and content of the answers were preserved. Then, there was a
vertical reading of the answers in order to highlight categories of analysis. The
grouping of some answers and their analysis, which was based on theoretical
frameworks deriving from Gerontology and from the Sciences of Religion,
showed that the majority of subjects adhered to the Church after they had been
invited by other members or by relatives, and that they spend their time with
religious practices within the Church to which they belong. Being together,
feeling safe, making friends, exchanging experiences, praying and sharing each
other s problems, receiving psychological support, health instructions and
spiritual guidance, and caring for other people were the main contributions
reported by our interviewees in relation to their participation in third age
programs offered by the Churches. The majority recognize that the Church
prepares them for old age, but at the same time, they believe it could be more
emphatic. Some of them think that, as it is a young Church, it has focused on
youths, leaving aside a large part of its members, who are elderly. The elderly
who live their lives according to the principles of the Adventist religion showed
that they have a healthy lifestyle, and the benefits of this attitude, promoted by
the religion to which they have adhered, are the conviction that they do not live
alone, the fact that they can count on the support of others and on God s infinite
power, strengthening of self-esteem, sense of usefulness, and meaning of life.
We understand that this study can amplify the view on aging in Churches, so
that they gradually include the elderly person in their activities, helping them
plan their longevity<br>Conhecer como a Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia contempla a pessoa idosa,
no seu cotidiano pessoal e social, foi o objetivo geral deste estudo, realizado na
metrópole de São Paulo, em duas igrejas adventistas (Liberdade e Brooklin). A
partir da abordagem qualitativa e da entrevista como estratégia de
investigação, elaborou-se um roteiro composto de 11 perguntas abertas,
aplicado a 10 pessoas idosas, 6 mulheres e 4 homens, de diversos graus de
escolaridade, com idade de 60 a 90 anos, membros das igrejas, e que
aceitaram de livre e espontânea vontade participar deste estudo. As entrevistas
foram gravadas e transcritas, literalmente, preservando as perguntas e
conteúdo das respostas. A seguir houve uma leitura vertical das mesmas,
ressaltando categorias de análise. O agrupamento de algumas respostas e sua
análise feita a partir de referenciais teóricos da Gerontologia e das Ciências da
Religião permitiram saber que a maioria dos sujeitos aderiu à igreja a partir de
convites de terceiros, e outros pela família, e ocupam seu tempo com práticas
religiosas na própria igreja da qual fazem parte. Estar junto, sentir-se seguro,
fazer amizades, trocar experiências, orar e levar a carga uns dos outros, ter
apoio psicológico, receber orientações de saúde e espirituais, e preocupar-se
com o próximo, foram as principais contribuições relatadas pelos nossos
entrevistados em relação à sua participação em programas de Terceira Idade
oferecidos pelas igrejas. A maioria reconhece que a igreja os prepara para a
velhice, mas que poderia ser mais enfática. Alguns reconhecem que por ser
uma igreja jovem, ela tem focado a juventude, deixando de lado a grande
parcela de seus membros que são idosos. As pessoas idosas que pautam a
vida pelos ensinamentos da religião adventista mostraram ter um estilo de vida
saudável, e os benefícios desta atitude, promovida pela religião a que
aderiram, consistem na certeza de não viver sozinhos, de contar com o apoio
do outro e poder infinito de Deus, reforço da autoestima, senso de utilidade e
sentido de vida. Entendemos que este trabalho pode ampliar a visão do
envelhecimento nas igrejas, para que estas contemplem cada vez mais a
pessoa idosa, e assim a ajudem a planejar sua longevidade

En 1978, l'anthropologue québécois Raymond Massé débutait sa carrière avec un travail sur les facteurs d'expansion de l'Église Adventiste du Septième Jour en Martinique majoritairement catholique, une île des Antilles françaises alors en plein bouleversement socioéconomique. Ce dernier, entre 1978 et 2008, affirmait à travers divers écrits que les motivations principales des Martiniquais à adhérer à l'adventisme résidaient dans la recherche de protection contre les forces du Mal et la quimboiserie, la thérapeutique divine en réponse aux attaques de ces dernières puissances invisibles, la valorisation sociale et identitaire ainsi que la solidarité communautaire. Mais qu'en est-il de ces motifs d'adhésion à l'Église Adventiste du Septième Jour ailleurs aux Antilles françaises d'aujourd'hui? Peut-on avancer les mêmes conclusions que Raymond Massé? Afin de répondre à ces questions, et juste à temps pour vivre l'ouragan Maria de septembre 2017, je me suis rendu à Marie-Galante, une île de Guadeloupe. D'après l'examen phénoménologique des données recueillies, le salut est au centre de l'intérêt des chrétiens adventistes marie-galantais rencontrés et leur affiliation religieuse est basée sur l'adéquation qu'ils font entre la doctrine et la Bible. L'« honnêteté intellectuelle » est l'attitude qui mène à la fois à l'adventisme et à s'en éloigner. L'appartenance religieuse est alors intellectuelle avant tout. Cela dit, la protection, la thérapeutique, la valorisation et la solidarité sont tout de même des dimensions importantes de la religiosité et donc abordées avec nuances dans ce mémoire. Suivant John Barker, je rends compte ici à la fois des dimensions globales (le « One ») et locales (le « Many ») de la religion via l'interaction de divers composants institutionnellement stables de l'Église et des conditions locales.<br>Québécois anthropologist Raymond Massé started his career in 1978, with a work on the expansion factors of the Seventh-day Adventist church in Martinique -- a predominantly catholic French West Indies island then in major socioeconomic crisis. Between 1978 and 2008, he reasoned through his various writings that the main motives for Martinicans to adhere to Adventism resided in a search for protection against the forces of Evil and quimboiserie, divine therapeutics in response to attacks from these said invisible powers, social and identity development and a sense of solidarity within their community. From there, one can ask : What about these motives of adhesion elsewhere in the French West Indies, and how do they compare with the reality of today? Can we arrive at the same conclusions as Raymond Massé? In order to answer these questions, I traveled to Marie-Galante, Guadeloupe -- just in time to witness hurricane Maria of September 2017. According to the phenomenological examination of the data collected, salvation is a core interest for Christian-Adventists from Marie-Galante, and their religious affiliation is based on the adequacy they find between the Adventist doctrine and the Bible. Moreover, I found that although "intellectual honesty" initially leads to Adventism, it can eventually also push away from it -- religious belonging is therefore first and foremost intellectual. That said, protection, therapeutics, valorization and solidarity are still important dimensions of religiosity and are therefore approached with nuance in this memoir. Following John Barker, I give an account on both global (the « One ») and local (the « Many ») dimensions of religion through the interactions between stable institutional components of the church and local conditions.

students of a Psychology graduation class, relate Psychology and Spirituality in
a thematical discussion group with the possibility of approximation between
these areas in a psychologist s training. As a theoretical reference, I used the
ideas on Psychology and Spirituality as presented by Kenneth Pargament. This
qualitative research was directed towards understanding the life experiences of
the aforementioned students as manifested orally or through written accounts.
A discussion group composed of six voluntary female adventist students in their
last semester of a Psychology graduation class was formed. The four proposed
topics for discussion were: 1) The Concept of Spirituality; 2) Dealing with
Spirituality in Psychotherapy; 3) A Psychotherapist s Training and Spirituality;
and 4) Spirituality itself. The discussions were recorded and the analysis was
conducted in accordance with Pargament s proposals, while keeping an open
mind on the contributions of other authors associated to the objective of this
research. The analysis located fifty units of meaning grouped into four topics: 1)
Spirituality; 2) Psychology and Spirituality; 3) Psychology, Spirituality and
Psychotherapy ; and 4) Psychologist s Training and Spirituality. This lead to the
conclusion that the adventist students of the Psychology graduation class show
interest in the topic of Spirituality and desire to better appreciate the two fields
in order to offer the client integral care, but also admit a lack of preparation to
act in this matter<br>Nesta pesquisa busquei compreender como alunas adventistas de um
curso de graduação em Psicologia relacionam a Psicologia e a Espiritualidade
em um grupo temático, a fim de refletir sobre as possibilidades de aproximação
entre essas áreas na formação do psicólogo. Utilizei como referencial teórico
as ideias sobre Psicologia e Espiritualidade apresentadas por Kenneth
Pargament. Tratou-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa, voltada à compreensão de
vivências das alunas, manifestadas verbalmente e por meio de relatos. Foi
realizado um grupo temático composto por seis alunas adventistas do último
semestre de um curso de graduação em Psicologia que se apresentaram como
voluntárias. Os quatro temas propostos para os encontros foram o conceito de
espiritualidade; o manejo da espiritualidade na psicoterapia; a formação do
psicoterapeuta e a espiritualidade; e a própria espiritualidade. Os encontros
foram gravados e a análise foi realizada em diálogo com as propostas de
Pargament, mantendo-se um olhar aberto às colocações de outros autores
relacionadas ao objetivo da pesquisa. A análise localizou 50 unidades de
significado, agrupadas em 4 temas: Espiritualidade; Psicologia e
Espiritualidade; Psicologia, Espiritualidade e atendimento clínico; e Formação
do Psicólogo e a Espiritualidade. Permitiu concluir que as alunas adventistas
do curso de graduação em Psicologia apresentam interesse no assunto
espiritualidade e mostram vontade de apreciar os dois campos para atender o
cliente de forma completa, mas reconhecem a falta de preparo para atuar com
esse assunto

Previous issue date: 2013-06-26<br>Este trabalho teve como objetivo compreender a relação entre a laicidade brasileira e a guarda do sábado pelos adventistas do sétimo dia. Para isso, através de revisão bibliográfica, buscou-se entender a origem da Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia, a importância do sábado para a mesma, suas ações para legitimar este preceito e como as constituições brasileiras influenciaram no desenvolvimento da IASD. A procura pela compreensão da laicidade brasileira também foi objeto deste trabalho e se deu através da comparação desta com as laicidades francesa e estadunidense. A partir disto, foi feito um estudo de como se comporta na prática a laicidade brasileira em relação à questão da guarda do sábado pela IASD. Isto se deu através de análises das leis que defendem um tratamento diferenciado para os adventistas do sétimo dia, quando a questão da guarda do sábado se torna um impeditivo para estes terem acesso à educação e a cargos públicos, como também as ações diretas de inconstitucionalidade destas leis. Por fim, foi feito um exame de decisões judiciais na questão da guarda do sábado, observando os argumentos dos magistrados para entender suas possíveis motivações, bem como a própria laicidade brasileira, pois as decisões judiciais, neste caso, são a laicidade na prática.<br>The objective of this thesis was to understand the relationship between the Brazilian laicity and Sabbath observance by the Seventh-day Adventists. In order to do that, a study of the origin of the Seventh-day Adventist Church (SDAC) helped to pin down the importance of the Sabbath for that church. This study also focused in the actions taken by that church in order to legitimize this precept as well as the ways the Brazilian constitutions impacted on the development of the SDAC. Another objective was to better understand and describe the Brazilian laicity, by comparing this with the French and American laicity. For that reason, this study focused on the laws that prescribe special treatment for the Seventh-day Adventists when Sabbath observance becomes an impediment for their access to education and to public office, discussing whether or not these laws are constitutional measures. Finally, judicial decisions concerning the observance of the Sabbath are analyzed, and the arguments advanced by Brazilian magistrates are described in order to understand their possible motivation, vis-à-vis Brazilian laicity, since judicial decisions reveal the practical side of Brazilian laicity.

Language maintenance investigations have, for the most part, been limited to the study of the effect that socio-cultural factors have on language preservation. Unfortunately, language maintenance has been studied in tandem with language shift. Language shift has generated more interested from scholars than has language maintenance. This dissertation is an attempt to open up new ways to look at the study of language maintenance by presenting a theoretical framework whereby the domain of language use is the principal focus of study. I studied the domain of religion, subdivided into several dimensions. One dimension, that of ideology, is at the center of my study. The main objective of the dissertation was to identify ideological themes within the doctrinal body of the church selected for the study. Twenty-five such themes were identified and analyzed to determine the ways in which the themes influence language maintenance among the church members. The case study approach and the use of several ethnographic data collection methods were employed to assist us in having a better understanding of the phenomenon of language maintenance and to pave the way for future language maintenance studies.

This denomination, brought forth out of the disintegration of the most important millenarian movement in American history, adopted the seventh-day Sabbath quite rapidly, without major conflict. One wonders if this is not a sign proving that Seventh-day Adventism embraced the Sabbath under the influence of other Christian traditions, rather than as a fruit of its own internal doctrinal development. Our research focused on Puritanism as a possible source. .

Previous issue date: 2015-03-27<br>Este estudio analiza la irradiación y la difusión del Adventismo en el Oeste de la Provincia de Paraná. Busca entender la reconstrucción de la memoria de los adventistas del séptimo día después de la penetración de la Iglesia Adventista del Séptimo Día en el territorio nacional en fines del siglo XIX, de los cambios sufridos desde la fundación del Adventismo, su adaptación al contexto social brasileño y, posteriormente, a la región Oeste de la Provincia. En específico analiza de qué manera los Adventistas do Séptimo Día, personificados por una institución religiosa, se irradió hasta la región oeste de la provincia de Paraná, diseminando sus creencias, valores e ideologías, allá de construir su identidad. Examina la construcción identitária del Ser Adventista, las estrategias y taticas utilizadas para su expansión misionera, allá de comprender que la constitución de un órgano de prensa, organización de conferencias, establecimiento de iglesias e construcción de Escuelas formaran los pilares de la propuesta misionera de los Adventistas del Séptimo Día, se irradió hacia Foz de Iguaçu. La pesquisa se vincula a la perspectiva del análisis del discurso de línea francesa, una vez que ello nos permite plantear el problema de manera a comprender como se constituyen los elementos necesarios para la aprensión de los sentidos. Tras fuentes bibliográficas y documentales, sitios y obras pertenecientes a la historiografía y memoria institucional adventista, se pautan en los análisis sobre las representaciones del imaginario de este grupo social, que de la misma manera, reproduce sus valores e ideas, que incurrir en la producción de sus prácticas sociales. Por su vez, ese conjunto de fuentes permite comprender una parte de la historia de esta institución religiosa en Brasil tras un dialogo hecho a partir de la propia historiografía adventista, corroborada con las fuentes analizadas, de manera que estas permiten deducir que las mismas estrategias utilizadas en ámbito internacional, sudamericano y nacional, al aplicarlas en la región Oeste del Paraná posibilitan la misma visibilidad.<br>Este estudo analisa a irradiação e difusão do Adventismo do Sétimo Dia no Oeste do Estado do Paraná. Previous issue date: 2015-03-31<br>This research is about an investigation to assess the role of publications, literature evangelist and literature evangelism in the insertion of Adventism in Brazil. The aim is to identify the effects of the printing press and the importance of the printed page for the Protestantism, as well as to examine the missiological purposes that marked the emergence of the Publishing Ministry, the literature evangelism and literature evangelists in the emergent Adventist Church. This study also intents to establish the concepts of the theology of mission, the growth process and finally the Adventists missionary advancement in the context of the Protestant expansion of the second half of the 19th century, both worldwide and in South America. In addition to these objectives, this research presents the arrival of Protestantism in Brazil and aims to analyze as the German immigration contributed to the Adventist achieve their missional purposes, since the first publications were printed in German and came to the colonies this ethnic-linguistic origin. Based on this research proposal, our intention is clearly show the role of publications and literature evangelists in the establishing process of the Adventist Church in Brazil. This study used the historical method, with data collection through documental and bibliographic research and the study is defined as qualitative, basic and exploratory.<br>Esta pesquisa se constitui em uma investigação para avaliar o papel das publicações, dos colportores e da colportagem na inserção do adventismo no Brasil. Pretende-se identificar os efeitos da invenção da imprensa e o valor da página impressa para o protestantismo, bem como analisar os propósitos missiológicos que marcaram o surgimento do ministério de publicações, da colportagem e dos colportores na nascente Igreja Adventista. O trabalho visa também estabelecer os conceitos da teologia de missão, o processo de amadurecimento e finalmente o avanço missionário dos adventistas no cenário da expansão protestante na segunda metade do século 19, tanto em âmbito mundial como na América do Sul. Além desses objetivos, esta pesquisa apresenta a chegada do protestantismo ao Brasil e se propõe a analisar como a imigração alemã contribuiu para que os adventistas alcançassem seus propósitos missionais, uma vez que as primeiras publicações estavam impressas em língua alemã e chegaram às colônias dessa origem étnico-linguística. Com base nessa proposta de investigação, espera-se demonstrar claramente o papel que as publicações e os colportores tiveram no processo de implantação da Igreja Adventista no Brasil. Para realização deste estudo, utilizou-se o método histórico com coleta de dados através de investigação bibliográfica e documental, sendo a pesquisa definida como qualitativa, básica e exploratória.

Les origines du Mouvement adventiste du septième jour en Roumanie transcendent les échecs des calculs des Millérites, millénaristes américains du XIXe siècle. Ce Mouvement s’enracine au coeur du Vieux continent et remonte à la Renaissance. L’essor intellectuel provoqué surtout par la lecture de la Bible, détonateur de la Réforme du XVIe siècle, de la Réforme radicale et de la Contre-Réforme produit des contestations et affrontements religieux qui entraînèrent la déchirure de la chrétienté occidentale et culminèrent dans les sanglantes Guerres de religion. Ces multiples tensions engendrèrent en Transylvanie le Mouvement sabbatarien. Ne jouissant d’aucune reconnaissance officielle en tant que religio recepta, victimes des persécutions et renonçant à vivre dans l’illégalité, certains des dirigeants de ce courent s’exilèrent, et la foi sabbatarienne essaima en Angleterre. La lente métamorphose en Mouvement baptiste du septième jour et son passage sur le continent américain préparèrent, trois siècles plus tard, sa rencontre inattendue avec un groupe de rescapés du Mouvement millérite. Le Mouvement adventiste du septième jour prit la relève et revint sur la terre ancestrale. Cette étude s’intéresse à l’adventisme en Roumanie pendant la monarchie et la dictature communiste, et fournit le cadre et les repères politiques, sociaux et culturels essentiels à la compréhension de son histoire<br>The origin of the Seventh-day Adventist Movement in Romania goes back beyond the failed calculations of the Millerites, who were American millenarians in the 19th century. This Movement has its roots in the Old Continent, and goes back to the Renaissance. The intellectual revival promoted by the reading of the Bible, prepared the 16th century Reformation, followed by the Radical Reformation and by the Counter-Reformation. All these movements of religious awakening inevitably produced a break within Western Christianity, opening the way to violence and to religious confrontations, culminating in the bloody Wars of religion. These multiple tensions gave birth to the Sabbatarian Movement in Transylvania. Deprived of any official recognition as a religio recepta and refusing to live in illegality, some of its leaders went into exile, and the Sabbatarian faith took root in England. Its slow metamorphosis into the Seventh-day Baptist Movement and its transfer to the American continent prepared, three centuries later, an unexpected meeting with a group that had survived the Millerite Movement. This transplant was a success : the Seventh-day Adventist Movement followed and with the time it returned to Romania. This study deals with this Movement in Romania during the monarchy and during the Communist dictatorship, and supplies the political, social and cultural framework and references necessary to an understanding of its history

Previous issue date: 2013-07-09<br>Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico<br>Os fiéis da Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia (IASD) possuem, na sua identidade religiosa, as duas principais marcas da denominação: a certeza no retorno de Cristo e a guarda do sábado. A primeira sustenta a base teológica a partir da qual o universo simbólico da igreja, desde a época em que era um movimento sectário, se estruturou; já a segunda é a que a torna mais conhecida (a partir de uma relação de estranhamento) tanto no campo religioso como na sociedade em geral. Através de uma abordagem antropológica, o presente trabalho busca compreender etnograficamente a Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia e os seus fiéis, em especial os mais jovens, por meio de trabalho de campo realizado entre setembro de 2011 e outubro de 2012, na cidade de Recife - PE. A observação do sábado foi o aspecto privilegiado, tanto metodologicamente quanto na acepção nativa. Sendo sua prática compreendida entre o pôr do sol das sextas-feiras e o pôr do sol dos sábados, os adeptos da IASD devem se abster neste período de atividades seculares que visem o interesse próprio para vivenciar um tempo de descanso, o qual permite maior comunicação com Deus, consequentemente gerando benefícios emocionais, espirituais e corporais que restauram a integralidade do ser. O sábado, mais que um mandamento divino ou um preceito religioso, é um princípio moral, ético e cristão. A sua guarda por parte dos Adventistas do Sétimo Dia é desafiadora na nossa cultura regida por uma lógica (cristã católica) dominical, ocasionando diversos dilemas para os fiéis na esfera pública, principalmente no mundo do trabalho e dos estudos. Este estudo etnográfico ilustra e reflete sobre a cultura sabática de jovens Adventistas do Sétimo Dia da cidade de Recife – PE e os dilemas oriundos de seu exercício em uma esfera pública laica.

L'adventisme est en France une organisation religieuse minoritaire d'origine américaine, marquée par une forte proportion d'antillais parmi ses adeptes. C'est un groupement fortement structuré du type secte selon la catégorisation wébériotrœltschienne. La présente thèse se propose de considérer le religieux adventiste comme une action collective. Pour cela à partir des apports de la sociologie des organisations, de la religion et de la connaissance nous analyserons l'adventisme comme résultant des règlements qui codifient les rapports sociaux interindividuels des adeptes, mais aussi le produit des relations sociales entre acteurs porteurs de stratégies. Nous soutiendrons que l'organisation formelle adventiste est au-delà des normes officielles, structurée par des relations sociales qui forment une structure informelle. Nous proposons d'expliciter celle-ci au travers de la notion de réseau social, définie qualitativement, en s'inspirant de la sociologie des réseaux, tout en gardant des distances avec cette dernière. Une analyse de l'action collective adventiste nécessite et c'est l'objet de la première partie de notre recherche, un regard sur l'émergence de l'adventisme, en portant une attention particulière aux formes de légitimations qui permirent l'institutionnalisation du mouvement. A cette vision historique, s'ajoute l'analyse des parcours de conversion des individus. Comprendre les parcours de conversion résulte d'un questionnement précis : qu'est-ce qui conduit des individus à participer à l'action collective adventiste ? Nous répondrons par une mise en évidence de deux grandes catégories de parcours religieux qui intègrent les "convertis de l'intérieur". Ce choix conduira à une approche plus englobante de la conversion, non dépendante de la notion de rupture traditionnellement mobilisée en sociologie de la religion. La conjugaison d'une analyse des relations sociales et des contraintes d'action permet de soutenir dans la terminologie wébérienne que l'action collective adventiste est de type collégiale et est l'espace de rationalisation limitée des acteurs. Une telle approche conduit à un certain désenchantement du religieux qui n'est plus présenté dans un langage idyllique, mais comme un espace social de stratégies et de tensions

Previous issue date: 2012-09-20<br>O viver saudável de alguns grupos específicos tem despertado o interesse da comunidade científica, e, nesse sentido, destacam-se os Adventistas do Sétimo Dia. O estilo de vida desse grupo consiste em uma associação de hábitos benéficos, como possuir uma dieta saudável, preferencialmente vegetariana, evitar o consumo de café, chá e outras bebidas que contenham estimulantes, ter uma prática regular de atividades físicas, e abster-se de tabaco, álcool e outras drogas. Pesquisas de âmbito internacional têm demonstrado que os Adventistas do Sétimo Dia apresentam menor morbimortalidade e maior longevidade quando comparados à população geral. No Brasil, entretanto, as evidências ainda são escassas. O objetivo desta dissertação consiste em descrever o perfil de saúde dos Adventistas do Sétimo Dia e investigar a prevalência de fatores de risco e proteção para Doenças Crônicas Não Transmissíveis e fatores associados. Através de um delineamento transversal, investigou-se uma amostra probabilística (n=361) da população de Adventistas do Sétimo Dia residentes no município de Vitória/ES, com idade igual ou superior a 30 anos. Utilizou-se um procedimento de amostragem sistemático, com estratificação proporcional por faixa etária. Para a coleta de dados, realizou-se uma etapa de recrutamento por meio de contato telefônico onde foram coletadas informações sobre aspectos sociodemográficos e condições de saúde. Em um segundo momento, aplicou-se um questionário estruturado autopreenchível, sobre aspectos comportamentais, apoio social, religiosidade, além de peso e altura recordados. Os dados foram analisados no programa R e para comparação das proporções utilizou-se o teste chi-quadrado e o teste exato de Fisher. Dos 361 indivíduos entrevistados, a maioria pertence ao sexo feminino (64,0%), possui 12 ou mais anos de estudo (37,5%), declarou-se parda (50,7%) e em união estável (69,5%), não nasceu em família adventista (70,9%), frequenta a igreja semanalmente (86,8%) e dedica-se diariamente a prática de meditação em família (74,8%). A média de idade da população foi de 50,5 anos (DP=14,7) e a de renda familiar per capita de 1,8 salários mínimos (DP=1,4). Sobre o apoio social, encontrou-se um escore médio de 81,33 pontos (DP=17,98). Consumo de leite integral (62%), ingestão de carne com gordura visível (33,2%) e uso de bebida alcoólica na vida (32,6%) foram os fatores de risco mais frequentes, enquanto dentre os fatores de proteção, consumo regular de feijão (81,9%), de verduras e legumes (73,5%), e de frutas (63,1%), apresentaram as mais altas prevalências. De modo geral, comportamentos mais saudáveis foram observados no sexo feminino, e entre indivíduos de maior escolaridade e renda. Pessoas criadas como adventistas apresentaram maior consumo regular de refrigerantes, e menor frequência de consumo de álcool e tabaco na vida. A população estudada apresenta proporções expressivas de hipertensos (27,1%), diabéticos (6,6%) e de indivíduos com excesso de peso (51,8%). A frequência de hipertensão aumentou com a idade, diminuiu com a escolaridade, foi maior entre viúvos, ex-fumantes, diabéticos, pessoas fisicamente inativas e acima do peso, e menor entre consumidores de leite integral. Adventistas em idades mais avançadas, com até oito anos de estudo, viúvos, pertencentes ao primeiro tercil de renda familiar per capita, e que relataram não consumir leite com teor integral de gordura, possuíram maiores prevalências de diabetes. O excesso de peso foi positivamente associado ao hábito de consumir carne com gordura e de tomar refrigerante regularmente, e negativamente ao consumo regular de frutas e ao vegetarianismo. Os resultados apontaram uma diversidade de hábitos de vida relacionados à saúde entre os adventistas estudados, e elevadas prevalências de hipertensão arterial, diabetes e excesso de peso, bem como de determinados fatores de risco comportamentais investigados.

O estilo de vida desse grupo consiste em uma associação de hábitos benéficos, como possuir uma dieta saudável, preferencialmente vegetariana, evitar o consumo de café, chá e outras bebidas que contenham estimulantes, ter uma prática regular de atividades físicas, e abster-se de tabaco, álcool e outras drogas. Pesquisas de âmbito internacional têm demonstrado que os Adventistas do Sétimo Dia apresentam menor morbimortalidade e maior longevidade quando comparados à população geral. No Brasil, entretanto, as evidências ainda são escassas. O objetivo desta dissertação consiste em descrever o perfil de saúde dos Adventistas do Sétimo Dia e investigar a prevalência de fatores de risco e proteção para Doenças Crônicas Não Transmissíveis e fatores associados. Através de um delineamento transversal, investigou-se uma amostra probabilística (n=361) da população de Adventistas do Sétimo Dia residentes no município de Vitória/ES, com idade igual ou superior a 30 anos. Utilizou-se um procedimento de amostragem sistemático, com estratificação proporcional por faixa etária. Para a coleta de dados, realizou-se uma etapa de recrutamento por meio de contato telefônico onde foram coletadas informações sobre aspectos sociodemográficos e condições de saúde. Em um segundo momento, aplicou-se um questionário estruturado autopreenchível, sobre aspectos comportamentais, apoio social, religiosidade, além de peso e altura recordados. Os dados foram analisados no programa R e para comparação das proporções utilizou-se o teste chi-quadrado e o teste exato de Fisher. Dos 361 indivíduos entrevistados, a maioria pertence ao sexo feminino (64,0%), possui 12 ou mais anos de estudo (37,5%), declarou-se parda (50,7%) e em união estável (69,5%), não nasceu em família adventista (70,9%), frequenta a igreja semanalmente (86,8%) e dedica-se diariamente a prática de meditação em família (74,8%). A média de idade da população foi de 50,5 anos (DP=14,7) e a de renda familiar per capita de 1,8 salários mínimos (DP=1,4). Sobre o apoio social, encontrou-se um escore médio de 81,33 pontos (DP=17,98). Consumo de leite integral (62%), ingestão de carne com gordura visível (33,2%) e uso de bebida alcoólica na vida (32,6%) foram os fatores de risco mais frequentes, enquanto dentre os fatores de proteção, consumo regular de feijão (81,9%), de verduras e legumes (73,5%), e de frutas (63,1%), apresentaram as mais altas prevalências. De modo geral, comportamentos mais saudáveis foram observados no sexo feminino, e entre indivíduos de maior escolaridade e renda. Pessoas criadas como adventistas apresentaram maior consumo regular de refrigerantes, e menor frequência de consumo de álcool e tabaco na vida. A população estudada apresenta proporções expressivas de hipertensos (27,1%), diabéticos (6,6%) e de indivíduos com excesso de peso (51,8%). A frequência de hipertensão aumentou com a idade, diminuiu com a escolaridade, foi maior entre viúvos, ex-fumantes, diabéticos, pessoas fisicamente inativas e acima do peso, e menor entre consumidores de leite integral. Adventistas em idades mais avançadas, com até oito anos de estudo, viúvos, pertencentes ao primeiro tercil de renda familiar per capita, e que relataram não consumir leite com teor integral de gordura, possuíram maiores prevalências de diabetes. O excesso de peso foi positivamente associado ao hábito de consumir carne com gordura e de tomar refrigerante regularmente, e negativamente ao consumo regular de frutas e ao vegetarianismo. Os resultados apontaram uma diversidade de hábitos de vida relacionados à saúde entre os adventistas estudados, e elevadas prevalências de hipertensão arterial, diabetes e excesso de peso, bem como de determinados fatores de risco comportamentais investigados<br>The healthy living of some specific groups has aroused the interest of the scientific community, and, accordingly, we highlight the Seventh Day Adventists. The lifestyle of this group consists of a combination of beneficial habits, such as having a healthy diet, rather vegetarian, avoid drinking coffee, tea and other beverages that contain stimulants, have a practice of regular physical activity, and abstain from tobacco, alcohol and other drugs. International researches demonstrated that the Seventh Day Adventists have lower mortality and greater longevity when compared to the general population. In Brazil, however, the evidences are scarce. The objective of this dissertation is to describe the health profile of the Seventh day Adventists and investigate the prevalence of risk factors and protection for Chronic Non-communicable Diseases and associated factors. Through a cross-sectional design, we investigated a probability sample (n = 361) of the population of Seventh day Adventists who live in the city of Vitória / ES (Brazil), aged 30 years old or over. We used a systematic sampling procedure, with proportional stratification by age group. For data collection, there was a stage of recruitment by means of telephone contact, from which information and data on socio-demographic and health conditions were collected. In a second step, we applied an auto-filling structured questionnaire on behavioral aspects, social support, religiosity, and moreover about weight and height. The data were analyzed in the R program and to compare the proportions, we used the chi-square test and the Fisher s exact test. Of the 361 individuals interviewed, most are female (64.0%), have 12 years of education or more (37.5%), declared itself brown(50.7%) and with stable relationship (69.5 %), was not born in Adventist family (70.9%), attends Adventist church weekly (86.8%) and is dedicate itself daily to the meditation practice in family (74.8%).The average age of this population was 50.5 years (SD = 14.7) and with per capita income of 1.8 minimum wages (SD = 1.4). With regard to the social support, we found a mean score of 81.33 points (SD = 17.98). Consumption of whole milk (62%), meat intake with visible fat (33.2%) and use alcoholic drink in the life (32.6%) were the most frequent risk factors, while among the protection factors, regular consumption of beans (81.9%) of greens and vegetables (73.5%) and fruits (63.1%) had the highest prevalence. Generally, healthier behaviors were observed among females, and among individuals with greater schooling and income. People who were raised as Adventists showed higher regular consumption of soft drinks (beverages) and lower frequency of consumption of alcohol and tobacco in life. The study population presented a significant proportion of hypertensive patients (27.1%), diabetics (6.6%) and overweight people (51.8%). The frequency of hypertension increased with age, decreased with education level, was higher among widowed, ex-smokers, diabetics, and people physically inactive and overweight, and lower among consumers of whole milk. Adventists at older ages, with up to eight years of schooling, widowers, belonging to the first third (tertile) of per capita income, and those who reported not drinking milk with full-fat content, had higher prevalence of diabetes. Overweight was positively associated with the habit of consuming meat with fat and take soft drinks regularly, and negatively to the regular consumption of fruits and the vegetarianism. The results showed a diversity of life habits related to health among the Adventists studied, and a high prevalence of arterial hypertension, diabetes and overweight, as well as certain behavioral risk factors investigated

The general objective of this work was to organize a field of knowledge related to the Seventh-day Adventist Church, through its health standard which is a reflex of its cosmogony, aiming to the depth of the Adventist identity. To this end, it describes the rising of the church among the social reform and American religious revivals of the eighteen century. Introduces Ellen G. White, the charismatic character accept by the emerging group as having the Gift of Prophecy, co-founder of the church and defender of a peculiar health standard, based on her explicit visions. Health is discussed within the Adventist cosmogony: its therapeutic values and theological basis; compared to the holistic standard defended by Capra to the Adventist White s standard. Finally, the analysis was based on the anthropological theory of illness, by François Laplantine, answering the questions related the identity of being Adventist which is recognized by a number of health related advises, that guide not only the practical life, but also the religious life of its followers. Such guidelines form the Adventist religiosity, together with the eminent religious elements which base the daily behavior of the individuals. This work was built on bibliographic research enclosing the areas of health, religion, sociology and anthropology, through which were studied the concept of health, illness and cosmogony.<br>O objetivo desta pesquisa foi compreender como os estudos da saúde no Adventismo permitem aprofundamentos na identidade do ser Adventista. O objetivo geral deste trabalho foi organizar um campo de conhecimento que se refere à Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia, através de seu modelo de saúde que é reflexo de sua cosmovisão. Assim, o trabalho descreveu o surgimento da Igreja em meio às reformas sociais e reavivamentos religiosos americanos do século dezoito. Apresentou Ellen White, a personagem carismática aceita pelo grupo em formação e detentora do Dom da profecia, co-fundadora da Igreja e defensora de um modelo de saúde peculiar, a partir de suas declaradas visões. Discutiu, também, a saúde na cosmovisão Adventista: seus valores terapêuticos e fundamentos teológicos; comparou os modelos holístico defendido por Capra e o Adventista whiteano. Finalmente, fundamentou-se na teoria da Antropologia da Doença de François Laplantine respondendo as questões relacionadas à identidade do ser Adventista que se reconhece a partir de um conjunto de orientações relativas à saúde, que guia não só a vida prática como também religiosa dos seus seguidores. Tais orientações compõem a religiosidade Adventista, junto com os elementos eminentemente religiosos que embasam a prática cotidiana dos indivíduos. Este trabalho se constituiu por pesquisa bibliográfica, abrangendo as áreas de Saúde, Religião, História, Sociologia e Antropologia, através das quais se abordou os conceitos de saúde, doença e cosmovisão.

The thesis is an ethnographic inquiry into the nature of Seventh-day Adventism in Maroantsetra, a small town on the northeast coast of Madagascar, and Sahameloka, a nearby village. The Seventh-day Adventists in Maroantsetra and Sahameloka do not participate in traditional practices through which local people communicate with their ancestors, because they consider such practices to be the work of the devil. This is highly significant in the context of Madagascar and causes serious tension between Adventist and non-Adventist kin. The thesis examines whether the members of the church form a discrete community, but finds that they remain firmly embedded in existing kinship networks despite the difficulties involved. The main body of the thesis is concerned with the nature of the commitment of local church members to Seventh-day Adventism. It is argued that the core of their commitment, and what they value most, is the practice of Bible study and the pleasure which derives from that activity. Moreover, it is suggested that Adventist Bible study is similar to certain aspects of scientific practice. The thesis further examines the ways in which Bible study is conceptually linked to an image of clarity, an image of dis-covering the truth from beneath Satan's many deceptions and of acquiring a clear vision of reality. In conclusion, it is argued that while other studies of phenomena labelled 'religious fundamentalism' have tried to understand what kinds of people join movements such as Seventh-day Adventism, and why they do so, insufficient attention has been paid to the nature of converts' commitment beyond initial conversion. Finally, it is suggested that Seventh-day Adventism in Maroantsetra and Sahameloka does not correspond to the modern concept of Christianity based on belief as an inner state.

A presente pesquisa analisa a influência da religião na formação dos hábitos
alimentares. Para este objetivo, centramos a atenção nos hábitos alimentares
dos Adventistas do Sétimo Dia. A Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia prega
hábitos alimentares saudáveis, considerando-os um requisito importante para a
manutenção do corpo o templo de Deus em um estado de pureza. A
preocupação com uma alimentação saudável está relacionada a uma
obrigação religiosa mantida pelos fiéis. Inicialmente, apresentamos um
panorama histórico da Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia, enfocando a vida e o
ensino de William Miller e Ellen G. White. Em seguida, apresentamos a relação
entre religião e alimentação, destacando os hábitos alimentares propostos por
Ellen G. White e a Igreja Adventista do Sétimo Dia. Por fim, verificamos a
proposta alimentar dos adventistas a partir da literatura científica da área da
nutrição.<br>This research analyzes the influence of religion in the formation of eating habits.
For this purpose, we focus attention on the eating habits of Seventh-day
Adventists. Seventh-day Adventist Church preaches healthy eating habits,
considering them an important requirement for maintaining the body - the
temple of God - in a state of purity. The concern with healthy eating is related to
a religious obligation held by the faithful. Initially, we present a historical
overview of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, focusing on the life and teaching
of William Miller and Ellen G. White. We then present the relationship between
religion and eating, highlighting the diet proposed by Ellen G. White and the
Seventh-day Adventist Church. Finally, we verify the food proposal of
Adventists from the scientific literature in the field of nutrition.

"Biblical Sabbath" or "Natural Sabbath" by followers of Adventist religion Seventh-
Day. For Seventh-Day Adventists, the Sabbath observance is a proof of fidelity
and loyalty faithful to their God. It is a matter of obedience to sacred time reserved
by the eternal and immutable law of God. It is an indispensable dogma and a bond
with God from the beginning to its end. According to the followers of Adventist
religion the Seventh-Day Sabbath is the center of worship and service to God and
establishes such an understanding in the books of Exodus 20, 8-11, Leviticus 23,
32 and Deuteronomy 16, 6 respectively. The aim of this thesis is to analyze the
question of the characteristics of the guard of the "Sabbath" by followers of
Adventist religion Seventh-Day, their biblical interpretation. The practice of
Sabbath guard presented as a collision of fundamental rights and principles. The
right to education and work in conflict with the right to religious freedom, both
public, and private, especially regarding the provision of public procurement and in
the educational environment and with respect to the practice of secular and labor
activities on sabbatical from the sunset of Friday to the sunset of Saturday.<br>A presente tese analisa o conflito de direitos e deveres motivados pela guarda do
“sábado bíblico” ou “sábado natural” por seguidores da religião Adventista do
Sétimo Dia. Para os Adventistas do Sétimo Dia, a observância do sábado é uma
prova de fidelidade e lealdade do fiel para com o seu Deus. É uma questão de
obediência ao tempo sagrado reservado pela lei eterna e imutável de Deus. É um
dogma irrenunciável e um laço com Deus desde o seu início até o seu fim. De
acordo com os adeptos da religião Adventista do Sétimo Dia, o sábado é o centro
da adoração e culto a Deus e fundamentam tal entendimento nos livros de Êxodo
20,8-11, Levítico 23,32 e Deuteronômio 16,6, respectivamente. O objetivo da
presente tese é analisar as características da questão da guarda do “sábado” por
adeptos da religião Adventista do Sétimo Dia e sua interpretação bíblica. A prática
da guarda sabática apresenta-se como uma colisão de direitos e princípios
fundamentais. O direito à educação e ao trabalho em conflito com o direito à
liberdade religiosa, tanto na esfera pública, quanto particular, principalmente com
relação à prestação de concursos públicos e no meio educacional e com relação
à prática de atividades seculares e laborais no período sabático, do pôr-do-sol de
sexta-feira ao pôr-do-sol do sábado.

The aim of this paper is to present, analyse and explain the image of Millerites and Seventh-day Adventists in literature. Most of the authors studied are Americans, but for comparative purposes reference is also made to British and Australian writers. Millennialism and apocalypticism are pervasive themes in both American fiction and Adventist belief. An outline of these subjects is given by way of introduction to the thesis topic. Since Adventists are inexplicable without an understanding of the American culture in which they were nurtured, and by which they continue to be sustained, the literary works which mention them have been related to the historical context. Chapter I details the origin and development of both the Millerite movement and the Seventh-day Adventist Church from the 1840s to the late twentieth century. This provides the setting for and explanation of the religion. Chapter II deals with the "moral approach" which some writers have used in describing Adventists. Despite preaching imminent catastrophe as well as renewal and rebirth only through apocalypse, they have been seen as a virtuous people having moral integrity from which writers can draw important lessons. Chapter III describes the humorous, satirical approach to Adventists includinq recent postmodernist apocalyptic works which use irony as a comical method to depict the church and its followers. Adventists become figures of polarity and radica1 ambiguity. Chapter IV is a study of Adventists presented in literature as caricatures, stereotypes and parodies. Writers set out to debunk and ridicule. It is a convenient strategy for some authors who wish to avoid polemical discussion. Chapter V describes Black writers and Adventism. Over the past sixty years a number of African-American authors with a beckqround in Seventh-day Adventism have published their experience with this religious faith. All writers reject the religion and prefer to embrace the culture of their black heritage. The study silhouettes the difference and similarities among the various writers in the treatment of a single subject.

Previous issue date: 2003-10-28<br>The prevalence of stress and burnout has become a common problem in the caring professions. Pastors, ministers and their families are not an exception. Available evidence
from personal reflections and scientific research demonstrates that pastoral work is today an occupation with high rates of burnout. However, little attention has been paid to this
topic. This study seeks to contribute to knowledge regarding the development of preconditions of the syndrome, and individual resources that help to prevent and control it
among Adventist pastors in the city of São Paulo. The text begins with an analysis of burnout, based on selected references that include general information regarding
symptoms, sources and measurement instruments; interventions and preventative methods. Burnout research demonstrates that religious ministers are generally treated like other caring professionals, with little consideration to the spiritual dimension that is crucial to the lives of clergymen. For this study, pastoral burnout is related specifically to a deficient relationship with God, environment and work conditions, as well as personal characteristics. Finally, the study suggests strategies to help decreasing and preventing the syndrome among the pastors who are the focus of this study.(AU)<br>A prevalência de stress e burnout tem-se tornado um problema comum nas profissões assistenciais. Os ministros religiosos não são uma exceção. Evidências disponíveis
derivadas de reflexões pessoais e pesquisas científicas demonstram que o trabalho pastoral hoje é uma ocupação com elevados índices de burnout; entretanto, pouca atenção tem sido dada a este assunto. O presente estudo tem como objetivo contribuir para o desenvolvimento de pré-condições e recursos individuais de forma a prevenir e controlar os
efeitos da síndrome entre os pastores adventistas da cidade de São Paulo. Inicialmente o trabalho apresentará uma análise do burnout, a partir de referências selecionadas, incluindo
informações gerais sobre os sintomas, antecedentes, instrumentos de medida; intervenções e métodos preventivos. Os ministros religiosos geralmente são tratados como outros
profissionais de ajuda nas pesquisas de burnout, com pouca consideração para com a dimensão espiritual, o que é prioritário ou mesmo vital para o clero. Para este estudo, em
particular, o burnout pastoral será considerado como um fator resultante de um relacionamento deficiente com Deus. Somam-se a isso as condições ambientais do trabalho e as características pessoais. Finalmente, o estudo pretende sugerir estratégias para ajudar na redução e na prevenção última da síndrome entre os pastores em foco.(AU)

A pesquisa inicial foi bibliográfica e teve como objetivo aprofundar os conhecimentos sobre a vida dos Taurepang relacionados à sua religiosidade e as relações com o Ambiente. Por meio de literatura específica, entrevistas e pesquisa de campo aprofundaram os conhecimentos sobre os Taurepang. A pesquisa está voltada para uma parte da etnia Taurepang que se tornou Adventista do Sétimo Dia, seus novos conceitos sobre o Ambiente, o surgimento da Maloca Sorocaima, suas representações sociais religiosas pautadas na nova religião, sua maneira nova de cultuar a Deus e seus novos conceitos sobre a preservação do Ambiente. também como seus novos conceitos Ambientais.<br>Our research aims to understand the social representations of Taurepang in their religious experience as well as its connexion with environment, from their early times to the present. His ancestors known as the Caribs or Caribbean; a summary of its history, its achievements, because in the past the Caribbean were called warriors and defenders of Amerindian. The initial research was literature and aimed to increase knowledge about the lives of Taurepang related to their religion and concerns with the environment. Through the literature, interviews and field research deepened the understanding of the Taurepang. The research is focused on a part of Taurepang ethnic group that became Seventh-day Adventist, their new concepts about the environment, the arising of Maloca Sorocaima, their religious social representations guided by the new religion, a new way to worship God and their new concepts about preserving the environment. Historical studies and anthropological members
of religious manifestations in his great foundation on the Adventist Taurepang religiosity through literature searches and interviews provided us with a broader deepening of the relationship between the environment and the Seventh-day Adventists in Taurepang
Sorocaima. We search to evidence in this study the worldview of Taurepang, their peculiar beliefs about their religiosity in Maloca Sorocaima, so as its new Environmental concepts.

O estudo aborda a criação e a trajetória histórica da Faculdade Adventista de Enfermagem FAE entre os anos de 1968 e 1998. Esse período de trinta anos compreende desde sua instalação até a incorporação ao atual Centro Universitário Adventista de São Paulo. A pesquisa destaca sua trajetória movida inicialmente pelo ideário dos fundadores e a contribuição proporcionada pela FAE no desenvolvimento do ensino superior adventista no Brasil e suas influências no cenário brasileiro de enfermagem. Suas transformações, tão necessárias no decorrer das mudanças educacionais, políticas, econômicas, sociais, mercadológicas e, especialmente, da própria enfermagem, se mostraram um desafio para a sustentação das bases filosóficas e conceituais, originadas da cosmovisão adventista de educação. O estudo procura identificar os motivos primordiais para a criação de uma escola de enfermagem, analisar o longo espaçamento entre a ideia original dessa criação e sua efetiva implantação, e destacar os aspectos característicos que a diferenciaram na trajetória dos seus primeiros trinta anos. Iniciativas pontuais foram tomadas para dar início a uma escola de enfermagem, e enfermeiros norte-americanos adventistas, em visita ao país, ensejaram a criação de uma escola confessional; todavia, descaminhos administrativos levaram a um extenso espaço de tempo entre a criação da primeira instituição hospitalar adventista no país, em 1942 - com uma já sentida necessidade de enfermeiros adventistas e a institucionalização de uma escola para formação de enfermeiros. Includes abstract.<br>Includes bibliographical references.<br>This thesis searches for that which is sacred to Jacques Derrida and ultimately concludes that if anything is sacred to him it is the other. This concern for the sacred is an attempt to ascertain Derrida’s relevance and value for religious traditions. Derrida’s ideas serve to destabilise (sacred) centres in religious traditions in order to find place for the (excluded) other. Hence, a central theme of this dissertation is that there are no stable centres. I have attempted to demonstrate this in the structure I have followed, a structure that is "centred on" decentring ideas that, while not arbitrary, could have been substituted for others: negative theology, the other, detours, khôra and différance.

Adventists, in order to verify if the generational gap is a demonstration that young people are
breaking with the church or, reconstructing identity. The generational gap can be seen in
various spheres of society and even within the Adventist Church. However, the generational
gap is not caused by rebellion, but for different ways to react and cope with the characteristics
of contemporary society. Thus, older people do not agree with the new proposals of young
people and also not even the youngest wish to continue living with the old stuff. The
Adventist Church has experienced the generational gap in two main aspects: The first is
evident in the communication, the second in the worldview of the world. The language has
changed in the time to communicate, in the present context, the image took the words
function. Therefore, communication may not reach your goal, especially the younger ones,
when expressed only through words. The other aspect that has caused the conflict is the world
concept to the youngest. For them, the world is not synonymous with sin as some older
people understand. Because of this difference, certain issues are not acceptable within the
church, because they are linked to the world and the world is understood as sin. However, my
conclusion is that though the young do not understand the world itself as a sin, they
understand that there are aspects of the world that are wrong. These aspects are not acceptable
to them and therefore they do not wish to break with the church. But they are looking for
significant changes that fit with their worldview. It s possible to show this same line of
reasoning in some church leaders, but the reports of young people express that did not reach
the local practice. Once I conceive the Hervieu-Leger s thought that identity is not passed
intact from father to son, but built individually, I understand that young people are forming
their own identity. For this identity to be solidly formed on the Adventists principles and
opened to the necessary changes in society, it does, in my perception, need to re-read Ellen
White based on the thought of Walter Mignolo, presented and explained by Adolfo S. Suarez.<br>Este presente trabalho, tem por objetivo analisar o conflito geracional e a formação da
identidade dos jovens adventistas, com o objetivo de verificar se o conflito geracional é uma
demonstração que os jovens estão rompendo com a igreja ou, reconstruindo a identidade. O
conflito geracional pode ser notado em diversas esferas da sociedade e inclusive dentro da
Igreja Adventista. Todavia, o conflito geracional não é causado por rebeldia, mas sim, por
diferentes maneiras de reagir e conviver com as características contemporâneas da sociedade.
Sendo assim, os mais velhos não concordam com as novas propostas dos jovens e tão pouco,
os mais novos desejam continuar convivendo com as coisas antigas. A Igreja Adventista tem
vivido o conflito geracional em dois aspectos principais: o primeiro se evidencia na
comunicação; o segundo na cosmovisão. A linguagem sofreu alterações na hora de se
comunicar; no contexto atual, a imagem tomou a função das palavras. Por essa razão, uma
comunicação pode não alcançar seu objetivo, principalmente aos mais novos, quando
expressa somente através de palavras. O outro aspecto que tem causado conflito é a
compreensão de mundo que os mais novos possuem. Para eles, o mundo não é sinônimo de
pecado como algumas pessoas mais velhas entendem. Por conta desta diferença, certas
questões não são aceitáveis dentro da igreja, por serem vinculadas ao mundo e o mundo ser
entendido como pecado. Porém, a constatação que faço é que, embora o jovem não entenda o
mundo em si como pecado, ele compreende que existem aspectos do mundo que sejam
errados. Esses aspectos não são aceitáveis para eles e por isso, eles não desejam romper com a
igreja. Mas estão em busca de mudanças significativas que se encaixam com sua visão de
mundo. É possível evidenciar essa mesma linha de raciocínio em alguns líderes da igreja, mas
os relatos dos jovens expressam que isso não alcançou a prática local. Uma vez que, concebo
o pensamento de Hervieu-Leger de que a identidade não é transmitida intacta de pai para filho,
mas construída individualmente. Entendo que os jovens estão formando sua própria
identidade. Para que essa identidade seja formada de maneira sólida nos princípios adventistas,
e aberta as mudanças necessárias da sociedade, se faz necessário, sob minha percepção, uma
releitura de Ellen White baseada no pensamento liminar de Walter Mignolo, apresentado e
explanado por Adolfo S. Suárez.

Les rapports de la religion et de la sante s'inscrivent dans le champ des antagonismes opposant l'institution religieuse l'institution medicale l'institution etatique. . Ils concernent donc des "politiques de sante". Celle des "adventistes du 7e jour" a ete elaboree au sein d'une secte protestante revivaliste, a visee millenariste et apocalyptique, a une epoque de renouveau sanitaire et social, dans la moitie du 19e siecle aux etats-unis. La presente etude ethnologique, que j'ai effectuee de 1980 a 1987 dans le midi de la france, a permis de comprendre et d'expliquer l'element primordial de la dietetique adventiste : le vegetalisme. Les raisons de son orthodoxie, celles de son orthopraxie et de ses heteropraxies ont pu egalement etre analysees. Elles ont pour essence le respect de la vie donc de l'interdit biblique "tu ne tueras pas", dont le legalisme est justifie par la valeur eschatologique du "maran-atha", expression arameenne signifiant : "le seigneur vient"; "et il retabliera l'ordre, l'harmonie et la paix du premier eden"<br>In the field of the relationship existing between a religious dynamic and a political process, are situated some health politics. This is the case of the health politic of the seventh day adventists. This doctrine was born in usa in the mid 19th century in a revivalist protestant sec, among various millenarian and apocalyptic currents. This ethnologic work, that i made in the years 1980-1987 in the south of france gives the explanation of the adventists diet : the vegetarianism.
