In the early 1850s, Vasily Zhukovsky develops tables with drawings of objects and phenomena and their coded names in four languages. The consistent use of visual didactics in them looks quite innovative against the background of textbooks of the time. The tables are part of the Initial Course of Study, which Zhukovsky was developing in the last years of his life. By that time he had already accumulated considerable experience in teaching Russian as a foreign language on the basis of his own handmade visual aids. Most of the tables are filled with plot-like images, but some also contain symbols

This article is an attempt to read Walter Benjamin's essay Goethe's Affinity through the concept of 'counterpoint' in music. First, I argued that Benjamin appropriated the concept of “affinity” for his own art criticism and he valued the interaction between a writer and a critic as a production of “affinity” while criticizing a biographical approach toward a writer. Secondly, I proposed that Benjamin’s initial efforts for a dialectical structure resulted in the discontent with its “synthesis,” which Goethe had also echoed in his novel. Due to such a discord, Benjamin had to abandon the system

When examining the art, actions, and writings of Zurich Dadaists it becomes apparent that there is an affinity with Eastern thought, namely Taoism and Zen Buddhism. These artists not only make direct references to aspects of Taoism and Buddhism, but their philosophies on art and life mirror concepts in both so strongly that this relationship cannot be ignored, although most scholars have done just that. Exploring this connection offers not only a new perspective on Zurich Dada but encourages a reconsideration of the commonly misapplied label of nihilism to this specific group of Dada artists.

It has been argued persuasively that we should see the art of the portrait miniaturist as being closely related to the art of the goldsmith – with the painted ‘jewel’ of the portrait set into a richly ornamented piece of jewelry. Indeed, there is a close affinity between Nicholas Hilliard’s art of portrait miniature painting and goldsmithery. His Treatise’s famous section devoted to precious stones reflects this idea, as it is concerned with the relationship of those stones to the colors used in the miniatures, colors that can be seen as surrogates for the stones themselves. Many existing methods compute the affinity matrix by low-rank representation (LRR) and pairwise investigate the relationship between views. However, LRR suffers from the high computational cost in self-representation optimization. Besides, compared with pairwise views, tensor form of all views' representation is more suitable for capturing the high-order correlations among all views. The gender of a noun affects the ways in which its relationship with other items in the utterance are marked. One is these is through agreement. For example, in French there are two genders, masculine and feminine. As might be expected, words referring to males are masculine and those referring to females are feminine. However, all nouns must be either masculine or feminine, so, for example, livre (“book”), garage (“garage”), and cheval (“horse”) are all masculine, while table (“table”), maiso

This innate conservatism, which only arrives at a technical breakthrough after an exploration of the past, is one of the extraordinary strengths of early Modernism. The break with previous assumptions did not depend upon sudden conversion (of a kind which was later to be the aim of the typical avant-garde manifesto), but evolved by making art which shows a startlingly detailed appreciation of previous tradition, in masterpieces which often ep
