Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe State of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, is one of the main world producers of geodes of agates: (a stone having a cavity lined with crystals). The gray type of agates, found in the region of Salto do Jacuí, called: “UMBÚ”, is ideal for coloring. These porous agates are suitable to some artificial colorings applications on their walls. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the measurements of agates colored by means of a colorimeter. The aging factor of colored agates with organic and inorganic dyes was evaluated. The colored agates with following organic colorings were analyzed: Brilliant green, rhodamine B (pink), crystal violet (purple), and blood red. The coloring of the following standard procedures of dyeing were also evaluated: Ferrocyanid of potassium/sulfate of iron (blue), nitrate of iron/calcinations (red), chromic acid/carbonate of ammonium (green), and sugar/sulfuric acid (black). The experimental procedures consisted of exposing agate plates in three places with distinct luminosity (dark, in door/domestic, and outdoors). The color variation was analyzed with a Minolta 2600d spectrophotometer, using the L* a* b* colorimetrical system as related to the colorimetric differential. The results have demonstrated that the colorimetric differential revealed itself as an efficient tool to evaluate the loss of artificially colored agates. The standards procedures for dyeing in green and red produce stable colors. The standard procedures, for dyeing in blue and black, offer variations, as they can be considered photosensitive. All the studied organic colorings (anilines) are degraded by the light.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe agate of the south of Brazil presents not much interesting or salient colorations, being predominant the grayish tones. These qualities were determining factors for the beginning of the agate dyeing process in Rio Grande do Sul, in the 18th century. Currently, the mineral segment presents deficiencies related to technologies and production processes, as well as inadequate infrastructures, resulting in loss to the producing communities. In this scenario, the research is structured to evaluate viable operational techniques for the sector, aiming to improve the value added to the gems benefited and color quality. For the development of the agate treatment, the system was replicated, standardized and optimized in the LAPROM Laboratory of the UFRGS and Centro Tecnológico de Pedras, Gemas e Joias do Rio Grande do Sul. The sampling was classified in four standards and spectrophotometer analyzed in three different phases. In conclusion, is compared the optimized and industrialized dyeing results, with the spectral distribution curves measured before and after the thermochemical treatment of the agate. With the optimized system, it was possible to reduce operating costs, energy time involved in the system, as well as keep and elevate color quality and being possible to establish relationship with quantitative and qualitative aspects of the reagents used.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIn the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the precious stones mines are distributed in two main regions: in the Mining District of South Amethyst (largest producer of amethyst) and the Mining District of the Salto Jacuí (largest producer of agate). In these two districts Geodis miners are exploited, partially or completely filled by intercalated layers of agate, clear quartz, amethyst, opal and calcite. The extraction process of Geodis generates large amounts of waste, comprising both the rock of the ore carrier as well as of low quality ore. In the municipality of Soledade focus the main company to benefit from trade and gemological materials used in Rio Grande do Sul. However, most of the objects produced aimed at the export is repeated in various industries benefit without apparent difference. The opal found in the mines of the Salto Jacuí appears in many colors. The white opal is the most common and is not valued, thus generating significant amount of waste. Through this study, that aims to establish a methodology for processing by the CNC machining waste of opal and white agate from the Mining District of the Salto Jacuí, a great value was added for design and technology. Whereas the most currently used in industries for agate, dyeing and cut into plates, are not applied to the opal, one can say that the introduction of CNC machining in this sector can assist in the exploitation of such material, to modify and value them as objects of adornment in the form of camafeus. The methodology used for this research consisted of steps of identifying locations for extraction of opal and white agate the state, evaluate the procedures used for further processing of these materials, study and analysis of the material by specific techniques, testing of CNC machining, analysis of cutters and materials used after the processes involved in machining and product development. Were conducted nine tests of machining and the subsequent analysis, identifying the results that, with the cutters suitable for the wear (larger diameter) or finishing (minor diameter of tip), when used together with parameters and machining strategies for well-defined, are sufficient to achieve the goal defined in this study.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe state of Rio Grande do Sul has the biggest agate deposits, this gemological material is used for a wide range of applications in jewelry and products, increasing significantly its value on the market. About 80% of agate production is exported mainly to China and Germany. The agate processing center in Brazil which holds the largest concentration of companies is located in Soledade, Rio Grande do Sul. This municipality is known worldwide as the gems industrial center. However, the processing technology of the local companies are quite limited, with little innovation, whereas being focused on the direct marketing, in other words, in the raw state, and in some manufactured products with low technological complexity. This research is about the cameo production, which are small sculptures usually made of agate and used in the form of brooches and ornaments, that in composition with gold and silver turn into jewels. In order to achieve this is through the development of an mechanism prototype to produce the cameos, using a copying system by adapting a pantograph milling machine. This prototype was designed to be used by small producers which account for 150 companies registered at APPESOL (Small Gems Producers Association of Soledade). The proposal is a low – cost alternative technique for creating products and insertion of agate sculptures produced in Brazil’s national and international markets. The cameo copy machine makes use of diamond tools, that copies from a model made of different material. Initial tests show that agate cameos can be produced using this technique and other gemological materials can use this technique as well.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe state of Rio Grande do Sul is the third largest producer of gemstones in Brazil, only losing to the states of Minas Gerais and Bahia, and agate production stands out in the region of Salto do Jacuí. Great amounts of waste, which are waiting for environmentally correct destination and use, are produced in mining and processing. Particularly, this study assessed the potential use of rolling waste of agates in civil construction, and the manufacturing of foam concrete blocks as a full substitute for sand. Additionally, a mixture was made of two foaming agents derived from coconut fatty acids as air-developer agent, and as hydraulic binder the Portland CP V ARI-RS cement. The production methodology was based on the production model of the blocks in a small industry, which produces and sells foam concrete blocks in the region of Passo Fundo, RS, Brazil. In a previous bench study the parameters foam composition, residue granulometry, water content, and mix time were adequate and later replicated industrially. The materials composing foam concrete blocks are rolled agate stones silica (SiO2 – 92.5%), foam from coconut fatty acids, fresh water, and cement as binder. In bench tests, 36 cylindrical specimens were produced, with 50 mm of diameter and 100 mm of height, with different volumes of incorporated air, divided into three groups. The samples were kept at room temperature for 28 days with healing process, and after that, the resistance to compression, density, and air bubbles distribution were analyzed. Results were assessed by Analysis of Variance, and showed that Group II presented density of 430 Kg/m3 and resistance of 0.92 MPa. This result is close to meeting the requirements of the norm for resistance class of < 400 Kg/cm3 (NBR 13438, 2013).

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIn recent decades, the demand for sustainable development has been influencing industries from many sectors to seek a proper destination for their waste. The use of waste for other purposes aims to reduce the environmental impacts. In this context, the civil construction industry is a potential sector for this use, since the high amount of natural raw material used, being a viable alternative to reduce their environmental impact. Thus, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, where there is the third largest production of precious stones of Brazil, processing stages of the stones, such as agate, generate waste that requires solution in relation to its final destination. Agate residues are found in three different forms: powder, with rounded shape; fine aggregate, with elongated shape, and coarse aggregate, also with elongated shape, all light-colored. The use of waste requires knowledge of their application possibilities, trying to evaluate the feasibility of its use in the technical, environmental and economic point of view. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of the use of agate aggregates in mortar for white concrete, replacing limestone fine aggregate, usually employed in cementitious matrices of white Portland cement. The study started with the characterization of the materials that were used and conducting to perform the tests in fresh and hardened state. The samples in fresh state were investigated by consistency index and squeeze flow. In the hardened state, samples were subjected to compression tests, tensile strength in diametrical compression, bulk density, dynamic modulus of elasticity, and also durability tests were used to evaluate the absorption of water by capillarity and the alkali-aggregate reaction. The results have shown significant influences in the substitution of fine aggregates by agate powder. In the fresh state it was observed that the mortars with agate powder required higher consumption of water and had better plasticity. In the hardened state, it was observed that mortars with agate fine aggregate showed lower compressive and tensile strength in diametrical compression, bulk density and modulus of elasticity compared to mortars made with limestone. In addition, the mortars produced with agate powder showed lower absorption of water by capillarity, except for mixtures produced without agate powder, where the limestone causes a lower water absorption by capillarity. In the alkali-aggregate reaction the agate fine aggregate can be considered reactive. However, the combination of this aggregate and agate powder can be considered innocuous.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleRio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, has important regions of extraction and processing of agate. Salto Jacuí Mining District, in the central region of this State, is one of the largest and more importante agate’s mines region of Brazil and even of the World. In Soledade town, there are the most important gemstone processing and trade companies of this State. Despite the abundance of gem materials, most of the objects produced in the different companies are very similar and have in common that they seldom are manufactured using new technological processes. Agate is usually exported as raw material or as cut polished slabs which can be dyed in various colors. Among several companies studied in this research, only one uses industrial processes involving new technologies. So, scientifical studies to indicate a better use of agate produced in Rio Grande do Sul, can provide new opportunities for the production of objects and personal ornaments (jewelry), modifying the trade where innovative designs are little explored. The methodology used in this study had several steps: identification of the extraction, processing and trade places of agate; evaluation of the industrial benefit processes used in agate; testing of conventional CNC machining on agate slabs; and testing on agate slabs of non-conventional computer controled machining by water jet cutting (WJC), with development of complex forms agate products. Twenty-four machining tests were carried out, with further analysis identifying ideal widths and thicknesses to optimize the use of agate raw material. With these tests, it was possible to achieve the goal of this study, which is to cut agate using water jet technology, in order to produce agate objects with complex forms.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe state of Rio Grande Do Sul produces most of the agate in Brazil. The Salto do Jacuí mining district has one of the largest deposits of this gemological material. In the processing of agate geodes, the best geodes are intended for foreign trade after the quality selection is performed. The others are sold to local traders for the manufacture of home decoration and personal use items. Rings are among these. They are handmade by local and small factories. We observed that these rings, purchased in stores in the city of Soledade (in the state of Rio Grande do Sul) and in a company located in the city of Lajeado (in the same state), have different side thicknesses. Sides are the part of the ring that may be between the fingers. This difference tends to make the person wearing the ring uncomfortable. It is known as kinaesthetic perception, making the ring ergonomically improper for daily use. The analysis of the kinaesthetic sense is carried out by interpreting what happens with a part of the body when a certain task is performed, perceiving the forces and tensions created by the muscle. Based on this, the objective of this paper was to propose and to investigate a new way to manufacture these adornments, using proper softwares to model the ring and the water jet cutting equipment, which will be able to provide precision of the cut of the agate rings, in addition to speeding up the manufacturing process. The present study concludes that it is possible to state that there are difficulties in keeping the thickness of the walls of the rings. However, if the equipment's pressure conditions (318 MPa to 333 MPa) and cutting speed (10 mm/s) are controlled, it is possible to get compatible thicknesses for the hoop of the rings.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleThe main goal of this study was to characterize laser engraving process in agate, standardizing the use of equipment in order to assist product development in the field of jewelry, ornaments and artifacts. Agate, a variety of chalcedony, is highly valued by foreign markets. One of the focuses of this study is the lack of improvement and innovation given to this material nowadays. In recent decades, the search for technological innovations that can help the process of industrial production has become an important tool to keep companies competitive and active front of their markets. The standardization of laser engraving technique can add value to the creation of new products in agate, creating a differential for the jewelry pieces and being easily applied on an industrial scale. The analysis of these highly qualified engraving parameters was aided by scanning electron microscopy images, once high magnification of images presents a better definition of the interaction zone between the material and the laser bean in a micrometer precision; stereoscopic microscope; and visual and tactile perception. The results obtained from the use of equipment located in LdSM / UFRGS and CTPedras / Soledade with their respective lenses, power and speed are of great value for the development of quantitative and qualitative analysis of the interaction of the laser beam with agate. The study of the interaction between laser and materials is still a vast field to be explored. This masters dissertation provides innovative results compared to laser engraving type CO2 in gemological materials, providing standardization of the ideal parameters for the equipment and for developing jewelry creations.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleSalto do Jacuí Mining District (DMSJ) comprises the largest deposit of agate geodes in the Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil. The DMSJ is included in the Gondwana III Supersequence (Paraná Basin) where the volcanic rocks of the Serra Geral Formation (Cretaceous) are positioned, as well as the sandstones of the Botucatu Formation (Jurassic). Also, interaction between lavas and sediments (sandstone intertraps) is present, creating features such as sandstone dikes, fractures and geodes filled by sediment. Several types of breccias are observed too and they are always associated with the agate mineralization. Until now, there is no consensus about the genesis of this mineral and propositions include the influence of a magmatic source to high temperatures, as well as formation at lower temperatures. In the present work, we applied stratigraphic, chemical and isotopic techniques in the analysis of agate mineralization in order to characterize and propose a model for its formation. The agate samples, the volcanic and sedimentary rocks were analyzed with the help of petrographic techniques, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), chemical analyses (in whole rock samples) and isotopic analyses (isotopic ratios of Sr Nd, Nd and O). The volcanic rocks were characterized by the presence of basaltic flows and dacite. The intertrap sandstones are similar to those observed in the Botucatu sandstone. However, locally, it has been described a finer, clay-rich and micaceous facies, interpreted as possible interdune environment. Agate displayed different petrographic, chemical and isotopic characteristics, showing the complexity of the processes involved in its genesis. The model of agate formation indicates that a siliceous fluid is generated from the leaching of silica of the dacites glass matrix by rainwater. The saturated silica solution migrates through the permo-porous system where fractures and microfractures predominate. When this solution flows into a larger space, like geodes, it precipitates according to the following sequence: opalchalcedony- agate-quartz. Usually, agate is found in the surroundings of geodes containing sediments (interdune?), but also by isotopic evidence. Taking these facts into account, we can assume that the proposed model was secondarily influenced by water/groundwater level associated with the thin facies of intertrap. Thus, based on different techniques, it was possible to propose a genetic model for the low temperature agate formation in DMSJ.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleJewelry has been developed along with new technologies and improvements in manufacturing processes, thus reflecting changes in society and industry. Certain gemstones, such as agate, have been processed for the manufacture of ornaments and adornments, however, some characteristics of the material remain little studied, such as modifications on its microstructure during processing. Among the new processing technologies for agate is CO2 laser engraving. The technology is associated with certain superficial modifications in the gemstone through the generation of a secondary porosity, due to the material having a natural porosity in a micron scale. During engraving, several parameters can be set to improve the processing result. Thus, a universal standardization of vector drawings can facilitate the execution of the engraving, mainly with the use of filled forms, usually performed with JPEG bitmaps type images. Aiming to study the effects of laser on the material, this research presents a threedimensional, non-invasive, and high-resolution analysis of an engraved agate sample through qualitative and quantitative studies based on X-ray computerized microtomography. Results showed that the effects of secondary porosity, thermal expansion cracks, and fractures occur mainly due to the presence of water within the sample, both natural and derived from chemical reactions due to the laser heating. Removed material volumes by expulsion and vaporization were quantified and weighted with respect to the distance moved by the beam. After the understanding of the effects, standardization analyzes of different spacings were made for the engraving of simple and/or complex, open and/or closed, and filled forms, with contact profilometry and microscopies. Standardization was used as the basis for a patent deposit.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleColor simulation is the essence of realistic image synthesis. In the case of minerals, the presence of a given impurity, or a variation of its concentration, can cause some materials to experience dramatic changes in color. For instance, while pure quartz is transparent, amethyst is a violet type of quartz, whose color is determined by the presence of traces of iron. The amount of iron defines the perceived hue. The color presented by a mineral can be determined based on its absorption spectrum. However, defining all possible variations is impractical and, therefore, such information is available only for a subset of the existing minerals. This thesis presents an approach for simulating the colors of existent agates, as well as for predicting the colors for (non-existent) synthetic ones. The approach is based on the fundamentals of quantum theory, and starts with the description of the silica molecule one wants to simulate. One can add different amounts of impurities, and alter the number of atoms included in the simulation. The obtained result is the absorption spectra of the mineral, which can then be used for determining the color of the agate with the desired composition. Although a detailed simulation of the entire process is extremely computationally-expensive, the thesis presents some results that corroborate the correctness of the proposed solution. It also introduces a standalone technique for defining agate volumes based on 2D images of agates.

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleIs there, as well as a work on dream, a work on myth in detective stories? Reading Agatha Christie and Pierre Véry induces this question: the myth of children can be seen, indeed, as a key to review their novels, enabling us to organize their works of fiction according to a few dynamisms and links of meaning. Based not only on material but also on form, the depiction of childhood is torned between aesthetic method and aesthetic process in Very’s and Christies’s books. Our work aims at questioning the meaning, the function and the consequences of this variation thanks to the use of mythical items

Der volle Inhalt der QuelleBorn in Lille in 1843, Alfred Agache was destined to make a career inthe family business. He soon lost interest, however, as his artistic sensibility was being developed by the assiduous study of music. His vocation as a painter became apparent during a voyage he made between 1872 and 1874, ending in the Far East. The encounter with cultures that were rich in art and history was to form an inexhaustible source of inspiration. On his return, a brief time spent in academic pursuits directed him definitively toward painting. In 1879, he submitted to the Salon in Paris a landscape of his native region ; but the following year his genre was abandonned for representations to the human figure. He proved to be particularly gifted for portaits, most of which were feminine, presented in somber, enigmatic settings accentuated by symbols copied from the allegorical style. A regular exhibitor at the Salons of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts – of which he was one of the founders – Agache met esteem, success, honors and renow from the critics, the public and his peers. His talent as well as the originality that pervades his canvases, making tem unclassifiable and novel, were acknowledged by all. Inspired of the idealism that was, in reaction to naturalism, impregnating art at the end of the Nineteeth Century, Agache's paintings raise questions and fascinate but defy analysis as well as all attempts at aesthetic categorization. Placed within the historico-artistic context, the first part of this thesis recounts the life and career of Alfred Agache ; the second, analyses the aesthetic features of his work which seems to have succeeded in joining itself with pictorial symbolism
