Abstract This paper explores the architecture of the Mount Sinai Sanatorium in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts (Qc) to disentangle the role of religion in the treatment of tuberculosis. In particular, we analyze the design of Mount Sinai, the jewel in the crown of Jewish philanthropy in Montreal, in relation to that of the nearby Laurentian Sanatorium. While Mount Sinai offered free treatment to the poor in a stunning, Art Deco building of 1930, the Protestant hospital had by then served paying patients for more than two decades in a purposefully home-like, Tudor-revival setting. Using architectural historian Bernard Herman's concept of embedded landscapes, we show how the two hospitals differed in terms of their relationship to site, access, and, most importantly, to city, knowledge, and community. Architects Scopes & Feustmann, who designed the Laurentian hospital, operated an office at Saranac Lake, New York, America's premier destination for consumptives. The qualifications of Mount Sinai architects Spence & Goodman, however, derived from their experience with Jewish institutions in Montreal. Following Herman's approach to architecture through movement and context, how did notions of medical therapy and Judaism intersect in the plans of Mount Sinai?

The article is devoted to the study of the detective genre as a model of philosophical cognition of the world and a system of cultural values. The goal of the article is to study how the attitude to the detective genre evolved in the academic discussions of the 20th century: transformation of status of the detective from an “entertainment genre” to the object of the philosophical reflection was the result of evolution of the philosophical paradigms from semiotics and postpositivism in the Modern epoch to postmodernism and theories of everyday thinking in the Postmodern epoch. The actuality of the article is due to insufficient study of the epistemology of the detective in the contemporary Cultural studies. The research methods of the article are based on the "archeology of knowledge" by M. Foucault and the cultural-semiotic approaches of R. Barthes and U. Eco. Author argues that although both detectives of A. Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie belong to the intellectual type of detective, they are based on different epistemological images of the world. Author of the article investigates the epistemological paradigms which the base in the detective stories of A. Conan Doyle and in the novels of Agatha Christie. The author analyzes the methodological approaches to the detective genre in the works of the leading theorists of the 20th century, including V. Shklovsky, M. Bakhtin, Z. Krakauer, U. Eco, and others. The author proposes to consider the modern detectives not only as the entertaining genre, but as a way to know various different forms of culture and traditions. The author notices that Finnish philosopher J. Hintikka has created a tradition of using the stories on Sherlock Holmes as an explanatory model of the principles of operation of artificial intelligence systems which goes back to Aristotle's logic. As a rule, the detectives in Agate Christie’s novels represent not formal logic (which prevailed in the stories about Sherlock Holmes), but searches of criminal through intuition, own life experience, knowledge of people and their typical behavior (habitués). Recognition of a criminal or a victim in the novels of Christie occurs through knowing the lifestyle of a person which becomes a source of the formation of his / her “idea”, his motives, desires and disappointments, which lead to certain decisions and actions. There concludes that A. Christie's detectives were based on the ideas of the philosophy of “everyday social thinking” (by A. Schütz) as the epistemological and culturosophical model. The author argues that the detectives of A. Conan Doyle and A. Christie are determined by different philosophical paradigms which represent the different epochs.

AbstractDehydration of silanol and molecular water in 60 agates from 12 hosts with ages between 23 to 2717 Ma has been investigated using desiccators and high-temperature furnace heating. There are wide differences in the water data obtained under uncontrolled and fixed atmospheric water vapour pressure conditions. After agate acclimatization at 20°C and 46% relative humidity, the total water (silanol and molecular) was determined in powders and mini-cuboids by heating samples at 1200°C. Agates from hosts < 180 Ma all showed a greater mass loss using powders and demonstrate that after prolonged high-temperature heating, silanol water is partially-retained by the mini-cuboids. Desiccator dehydration of powders and slabs shows that powder preparation can produce water losses; this is particularly relevant in agates from hosts < 180 Ma. The identified problems have consequences for water quantification in agate and chalcedony using infrared or thermogravimetric techniques. Mobile and total water in agate is considered in relation to host-rock age, mogánite content and crystallite size. Links are observed between the various identified water contents allowing comment on quartz development and agate genesis. The water data also supports previous claims that agates from New Zealand and Brazil were formed long after their host.

Agates of Paleoproterozoic volcanics (2100−1920 Ma) within the Onega Basin (Karelian Craton, Southeast Fennoscandia) were studied using optical and scanning electron microscopy, X-ray powder diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry XRF, laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), and C-O isotope analysis. Agate mineralization is widespread in the lavas gas vesicles, inter-pillow space of basalts, picrobasalts, basaltic andesites, as well as agglomerate tuffs. Agates are characterized by fine and coarse banding concentric zoning; moss, spotted, veinlet, and poor-fancy texture types were identified. Agate mineralization is represented by silicates, oxides, and hydroxides, carbonates, phosphates, sulfides, and sulfates. Among the silica minerals in agates only chalcedony, quartz and quartzine were found. The parameters of the quartz structure according to the X-ray diffraction data (well-develops reflections (212), (203), (301), large crystallite sizes (Cs 710–1050 Å) and crystallinity index (CI 7.8–10.3) give evidence of multi-stage silica minerals recrystallization due to a metamorphic (thermal) effect. The decreasing trend of trace element concentration in the banded agates from the outer zone to the core suggests a chemical purification process during crystallization. C-O isotope characteristic of agate-associated calcite reflects primary magmatic origin with the influence of hydrothermal activity and/or low-thermal meteoric fluids. Agates were formed under low PT-parameters and related to hydrothermal activity on the first stage of Svecofenian orogeny within 1780−1730 Ma. Thus, it can be believed that the temporal gap between continental flood basalts outflow and agate formation is about 190 Ma.

After 6 years in the treated area, sprouting was sparse (density = 22,500 stems/ha [9,000 stems/ac]), and mean height was approximately 2.6 m (8.6 ft). In the control area, sprouting was uniform (density > 132,500 stems/ha [53,000 stems/ac]) and mean height was approximately 6 m (20 ft). According to Hydro-Québec's clearance standard at that site, the control area should have been cut last year. In the treated area, clearing is not needed for at least 3 to 4 years.

AbstractSamples of agate and quartz incrustations from different parent volcanic rocks of certain world-wide localities were investigated by EPR, CL and trace element analysis. In all agate samples the following paramagnetic centres were detected:, E′1, [AlO4]0 [FeO4/M+]0 and [GeO4/M+]0. Centres of the type [TiO4/Li+]0 and [TiO4/H+]0, which were detected in quartz of the parent volcanics, are absent in agate. Generally, the abundance of centres (silicon vacancy) and E′1 centres (oxygen vacancy) in agate is remarkably higher than in quartz. The high defect density in agates points to rapid growth of silica from a strongly supersaturated solution probably with a noncrystalline precursor.CL microscopy reveals internal structures and zoning in agates and quartz incrustations which clearly differ from those discernible by conventional polarizing microscopy. The CL spectra of agates differ from those of quartz from crystalline rocks. At least three broad emission bands were detected in the CL spectra: a blue band of low intensity, a yellow band at about 580 nm, and an intense red band at 650 nm. The CL emission at 650 nm shows some relations to the hydroxyl or alkali content and the abundance of centres and E′1 centres. The emission intensity increases during electron bombardement due to the conversion of different precursors (e.g. ≡Si-O-H, ≡Si-O-Na groups) into hole centres. Another conspicuous feature in the CL spectra of agates is the existence of a yellow emission band centred at around 580 nm. The predominance of the yellow CL emission band and the high concentration of E′1 centres are typical for agates of acidic volcanics and are indicative of a close relationship between the two.

Agate—a spectacular form of SiO2 and a famous gemstone—is commonly characterized as banded chalcedony. In detail, chalcedony layers in agates can be intergrown or intercalated with macrocrystalline quartz, quartzine, opal-A, opal-CT, cristobalite and/or moganite. In addition, agates often contain considerable amounts of mineral inclusions and water as both interstitial molecular H2O and silanol groups. Most agate occurrences worldwide are related to SiO2-rich (rhyolites, rhyodacites) and SiO2-poor (andesites, basalts) volcanic rocks, but can also be formed as hydrothermal vein varieties or as silica accumulation during diagenesis in sedimentary rocks. It is assumed that the supply of silica for agate formation is often associated with late- or post-volcanic alteration of the volcanic host rocks. Evidence can be found in association with typical secondary minerals such as clay minerals, zeolites or iron oxides/hydroxides, frequent pseudomorphs (e.g., after carbonates or sulfates) as well as the chemical composition of the agates. For instance, elements of the volcanic rock matrix (Al, Ca, Fe, Na, K) are enriched, but extraordinary high contents of Ge (>90 ppm), B (>40 ppm) and U (>20 ppm) have also been detected. Calculations based on fluid inclusion and oxygen isotope studies point to a range between 20 and 230 °C for agate formation temperatures. The accumulation and condensation of silicic acid result in the formation of silica sols and proposed amorphous silica as precursors for the development of the typical agate micro-structure. The process of crystallisation often starts with spherulitic growth of chalcedony continuing into chalcedony fibers. High concentrations of lattice defects (oxygen and silicon vacancies, silanol groups) detected by cathodoluminescence (CL) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy indicate a rapid crystallisation via an amorphous silica precursor under non-equilibrium conditions. It is assumed that the formation of the typical agate microstructure is governed by processes of self-organization. The resulting differences in crystallite size, porosity, kind of silica phase and incorporated color pigments finally cause the characteristic agate banding and colors.

This review covers the last 250 years of major scientific contributions on the genesis of agates found in basic igneous host rocks. From 1770 to 1955, the genesis question was frequently limited to discussions based on observations on host rock and agate thick sections. Over the next 25 years, experimental investigations examined phase transformations when silica glass and various forms of amorphous silica were heated to high temperatures. This work demonstrated that the change from the amorphous state into chalcedony was likely to be a multi-stage process. The last 40 years has seen modern scientific instrumentation play a key role in identifying the physical and chemical properties of agate. The outcome of this work has allowed limited evidence-based comment on the conditions of agate formation. There is a general consensus that agates in these basic igneous hosts form at <100 °C. However, the silica source and the nature of the initial deposit remain to be proven.

AbstractAn ‘Al-thermometer’ was applied to agate samples of volcanic parent rocks to provide information about the temperature of agate formation. The temperatures were calculated from concentrations of [AlO4]0 centres determined by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) measurements. The calculations for agate bands in some cases yield temperatures of up to 655°C, which are assumed to be invalid; they are thought to be artifacts resulting from non-equilibrium crystallization processes. In contrast, the formation temperatures (60–198°C) estimated for associated quartz incrustations within the agate geodes are in good accord with those calculated from oxygen isotope data. Direct estimation of the formation temperatures of agates is problematic. The best results will be obtained by analyses of associated phanerocrystalline quartz incrustations.

Agates in Paleocene/Eocene tuffs from El Picado/Los Indios, Cuba were investigated to characterize the mineral composition of the agates and to provide data for the reconstruction of agate forming processes. The volcanic host rocks are strongly altered and fractured and contain numerous fissures and veins mineralized by quartz and chalcedony. These features indicate secondary alteration and silicification processes during tectonic activities that may have also resulted in the formation of massive agates. Local accumulation of manganese oxides/hydroxides, as well as uranium (uranyl-silicate complexes), in the agates confirm their contemporaneous supply with SiO2 and the origin of the silica-bearing solutions from the alteration processes. The mineral composition of the agates is characterized by abnormal high bulk contents of opal-CT (>6 wt%) and moganite (>16 wt%) besides alpha-quartz. The presence of these elevated amounts of “immature” silica phases emphasize that agate formation runs through several structural states of SiO2 with amorphous silica as the first solid phase. A remarkable feature of the agates is a heterogeneous distribution of moganite within the silica matrix revealed by micro-Raman mapping. The intensity ratio of the main symmetric stretching-bending vibrations (A1 modes) of alpha-quartz at 465 cm−1 and moganite at 502 cm−1, respectively, was used to depict the abundance of moganite in the silica matrix. The zoned distribution of moganite and variations in the microtexture and porosity of the agates indicate a multi-phase deposition of SiO2 under varying physico-chemical conditions and a discontinuous silica supply.

AbstractCharacterization of Brazilian agates containing a lower horizontally banded section and an upper chamber with bands parallel to the walls shows that these agates formed much later than the 135 Ma Paraná basalt host rock. Age differentiation between the two types of banding shows that the horizontal bands formed between 43 to 63 Ma ago with a final infill of wall-lining bands between 7 and 27 Ma later. The horizontal bands have a higher Al3+ concentration and a greater crystallite size than the wall-lining layers; they have a lower mogánite content and defect-site water content. The formation of these agates appears to be the result of a three-stage process. After the separate formation of horizontally banded and wall-lining agate, a silica infill seals the gap between the agate and the cavity wall. The detection of cristobalite in some specimens indicates that genesis of both the horizontally banded and wall-lining deposits in the Brazilian samples proceeds along an amorphous silica → opal-CT → opal-C → chalcedony pathway.

AbstractA systematic investigation of agates from different occurrences in Europe, Northern and Southern America reveals that macrocrystalline quartz and chalcedony within them have an unusually high uranium content. Whereas agates may contain >70 ppm of U, quartz from magmatic and metamorphic rocks as well as pegmatite quartz commonly exhibit U concentrations at sub-ppm levels. Spatially resolved trace-element analyses by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry show that the distribution of U within the agate samples is heterogeneous and coincides with the structural banding. The results indicate that U is incorporated into agate as uranyl ions. These ions, which are bound to the silica surface, are interpreted to originate from the parallel accumulation of Si and U by alteration processes of surrounding host rocks during agate formation. The uranyl ion is the cause of greenish photoluminescence (PL) in agate, which can only be excited by short wavelengths (<300 nm). The green PL is due to the electron transition from an excited to a ground state of the uranyl ion and is shown by a typical emission line at ∼500 nm accompanied by several equidistant lines. These are due to the harmonic vibration of oxygen atoms along the uranyl axis. Luminescence can be detected in samples with a U content down to the 1 ppm level.

AbstractChalcedony and agates from a variety of world-wide hosts have been examined using cathodoluminescence (CL). Gaussian fitting of the experimental data shows that there are two dominant spectral emissions at ∼400 and ∼660 nm. A third subordinate peak is also found at ∼470, ∼560 or ∼620 nm. An age-related link is shown between the respective decreasing and increasing relative intensities of the 660 and 620 nm emissions. It is proposed that this change is due to a condensation reaction between neighbouring Si–OH groups eliminating water and forming a strained Si-O-Si bond.Agates from a variety of hosts and regions produced no clear demonstrable CL distinctions. However, a set of Western Australian agates was examined from host rocks that had been subjected to burial metamorphism. Cathodoluminescence produced different spectral emissions in the petrographic fibrous and granular regions of these agates. One agate shows a partial transformation of the petrographic fibrosity into granularity. This conversion is characterized by emission bands at 570 nm and 460 nm. Similar emission-band changes were produced by heating Brazilian agates for 35 days at 300°C. The identification of these changes in agate could serve as an indicator of palaeoheating within the parent rock.

Heuristic knowledge has been integrated with analytical tools to support decision making for flood management. Development of an expert system called Intelligent Flood Management System for the selection of appropriate flood damage reduction measures for a given area is described. The selection of flood damage reduction measures is based on hydraulic, hydrological, geotechnical, environmental, and economic factors related to the river system and the area to be protected from floods. The knowledge base of the Intelligent Flood Management System is generic and can be used to identify a suitable flood management option for any area. The model base of the Intelligent Flood Management System consists of the hydraulic analysis package HEC-RAS, the flood damage analysis program HEC-FDA, and a model for economic analysis. The graphical user interface is developed for effective communication with the system. The developed system has been implemented to identify appropriate flood damage reduction options for the town of Ste. Agathe in Manitoba, Canada using data from 1997 flood in the Red River Basin.Key words: flood control, flood management, structural measures, heuristic knowledge, decision support systems, expert systems.

In 1984 and 1985 a total of 51 mummies of the genus Therioaphis sp. (Hornoptera: Aphididae) were collected on alfalfa, Medicago sativa L., in several localities in southern Manitoba: Glenlea, Oakbank, Rosenort, St. Adolphe, and Ste. Agathe [status of North American species of Therioaphis is uncertain; some workers regard Therioaphis on alfalfa and those on clover as different species, whereas others regard those found on alfalfa as merely strains of the species from clover (A.G. Robinson, personal comrnunication)]. The mummies were held in gelatin capsules at 20°C and a 16L:8D cycle, and 44 parasite adults that emerged were identified. Two primary parasites pecies. Praon exsolelurn (Nees) and Binodoxys sp. (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae), were recorded (Table 1). Cocoons from which adults of P. exsoleturn emerged were formed between the mummy and the substratum, whereas cocoons of the two Binodoxys specimens were inside the mummies. The three secondary parasite species (Table 1) emerged only from the hosts with external cocoons and presumably had developed on P. exsoleturn. Each of the seven hosts from which no parasites emerged had an external cocoon which contained a decomposed parasite larva, either P. exsoletum or one of the secondary species.

Auditory sensory deprivation is a phenomenon characterized by a significant decrease or complete subsidence in sending external sound information through the organ of hearing to the human brain. Various infectious diseases, vascular pathology, genetic abnormalities, and intoxication conditions may lead to various diseases of the ear and, as a consequence, to hearing loss or deafness. The second part of the paper covers the biographical data of such composers as Agathe Backer Grøndahl, Aleksandr A. Kasyanov, Evelyn Elizabeth Ann Glennie. The paper assesses the development of auditory sensory deprivation with the onset of deafness and shows the influence of auditory sensory deprivation and the psychological state of composers on the results of their creative activity. The author compares the internal crisis, mental destabilization, and the lack of sound perception with the effective implementation of musical experience, which allowed the composers to create great musical works, despite their pathological condition. In addition, the paper points out the possibility to continue effective creative activity and give live musical performances due to the sense of ‘feeling’ the vibrations and the ability to develop and use it in a proper way (Evelyn Glennie). Synesthetic perception is revealed through the given work.
