This article examines how Próspero Cahuantzi, governor of Tlaxcala from 1885–1911, claimed his Indigenous heritage. Cahuantzi asserted his Indigenousness by contributing to the Porfirian administration’s nation-building campaigns, which glorified Mexico’s Indigenous past. The article traces how Cahuantzi collected, disseminated, and protected Indigenous artifacts and history.
