In 1782, Dibdin entered into a partnership with Charles Hughes to set up a new entertainment venue, the Royal Circus. Its unique feature was the combination of an equestrian ring with allegorical and musical entertainments on a proscenium-arch stage, an innovative hybrid that drew upon the respective talents of Hughes and Dibdin. This chapter analyses how the Circus sought to compete with its rivals through its architecture and location, spectacle, music, novelties (including performances by children), and the mixing of genres and forms. Ultimately, however, Dibdin’s time at the Circus ended in ignominious disputes, a product of licensing problems, but also a failure to collaborate successfully in the manner demanded by this form of entertainment. Dibdin’s spell as a theatre-manager at the Circus thus reveals the wider driving forces—competition, innovation, miscellany, and collaboration—that lay behind the flourishing of London’s minor theatres in the late eighteenth century.

This chapter discusses the survival of the traditional proscenium arch stage and the ways in which it was rethought. A significant number of Britain’s new civic and repertory theatres of the 1960s and 1970s had, if not a full proscenium arch stage, then at least an open end stage which could be equipped with a proscenium arch for particular productions. The discussion begins with the arguments that were made in favour of this kind of stage before examining how it was rethought in practice, focusing first on the proscenium arch itself before turning to the auditorium. Key examples discussed include the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry, Nottingham Playhouse, the Haymarket in Leicester, the Mercury in Colchester, the Barbican in London, and the Thorndike, Leatherhead. Among the themes discussed are the extent to which auditoria were understood to be ‘functional’ spaces and the desirability of a festive atmosphere in the auditorium.

This chapter covers four congenital neurological disorders which may be encountered in adult medicine: cerebral palsy, Chiari malformations, spina bifida, and tethered cord syndromes. Cerebral palsy is a disturbance of motor function arising from damage to the developing fetal or infant brain. It usually refers to a disorder resulting from a non-progressive insult which occurred at less than 3 years of age. Chiari malformations are congenital abnormalities of the anatomy and structural relationships of the cerebellum, the brainstem, and the foramen magnum. Dysraphism is a failure of opposition of anatomical structures which are normally fused. Spinal dysraphism is synonymous with spina bifida, a failure of embryological fusion of the neural tube. In all types, the vertebral arch fails to completely form. The tethered cord syndromes involve a restriction of the normal cephalad migration of the conus during life. This can occur both with and without spina bifida.

This chapter reflects on the sequence of the book so far, and applies the discussion to some aspects of human life. It is false to say that an arch is explained by the properties of stones. It would still be false to say that an arch is explained by what stones are, even if all arches everywhere were made of stones. Similar observations extend throughout science, and from this it can, and should, be deduced that the moral stature of human beings is neither eroded nor replaced by the study of the physical mechanism of human beings. It is the duty of scientists writing for the general public to make this clear and not fudge it. It is false to say, for example, that the language of justice and responsibility is less objective than statements about wavefunctions coming from physics, or statements about genes in biology.

The book “Arca Project: Solidarity strengthening dreams and hopes in Altaneira-Ceará” describes the history of two Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), known as Associação Raízes Culturais de Altaneira (ARCA) and Fundação Educativa e Cultural Arca (Fundação Arca), linked especially by the spirit of solidarity. While the Association, formed mainly by family farmers, works with income generation and solidarity economy projects, the Arca Foundation develops projects in line with local and regional education and culture. The work begins by portraying the path of Carlos Alberto Tolovi in a social project of struggle for housing in an old favela that was located near the center of São Paulo, when he served as a seminarian and also as a priest, trying to show how much this his path contributed to the formation of the Arca Project. After describing how ARCA has established, the author continues to present the evolution of the work carried out by the Association and the context that subsequently led to the creation of the Arca Foundation. The narrative of the history of these two non-profit entities, known together as Projeto Arca, refers to the discussion of key concepts that inspire collective work, the questioning of the reality of social injustices and inequalities that characterize capitalist society and represents the hope of a culture, where the dignity of human life and social relations are more important than the economic one, aimed mainly at maximizing individual profit.

This chapter describes empirical support for the ARC model from multiple randomized controlled trials. These trials describe the effects of ARC on organizational culture and climate, organizational priorities, clinicians’ work attitudes, clinicians’ evidence-based practice behaviors, and most importantly, client outcomes. Both the ARC model and the validity of the OSC measurement system are also supported by a number of non-experimental and quasi-experimental studies. Collectively, these studies describe linkages with OSC and related criteria using regional and nationwide samples that are fundamental to explaining the value of the ARC model. Much of this work is referenced throughout the book. In this chapter, the authors focus on the randomized controlled trials to support causal inferences about the effects of ARC, including impact on client outcomes, staff outcomes such as turnover and engagement, as well as impact on evidence-based practices. The evidence also highlights the implications for using ARC strategies in planned efforts to improve service effectiveness.

This chapter presents novel data from the Nakh-Dagestanian language Archi illustrating a typologically unusual phenomenon of apparent agreement between first person pronouns and absolutive-marked arguments. Apart from their typological significance, these facts challenge current approaches to agreement, which hold that Agree relations can be established only between heads and phrases. The chapter shows that Archi agreeing pronouns do not constitute a uniform class, but subdivide into simple weak pronouns and complex forms composed of a pronoun and a focus marker. Weak pronouns lack [CL] feature specification ([øCL]), and must therefore copy a class feature from the closest v to avoid violating the constraint that all DPs must be specified for [CL]. As a result, the apparent agreement between arguments can be reduced to the unsurprising agreement between the absolutive DP and a series of verbal heads, some of them morphologically null.

Chapter 1 (‘A Window to Internal and External Change in Banking’) provides a wide-arch view of the themes in the book. It highlights how in spite of being deeply embedded in our culture as an object of everyday life, the interaction with ATMs is largely inconsequential for most people. This chapter also forwards a case to study the ATM to better understand the possibilities for technological change to bring about a cashless economy. Another argument put forward is that the ATM is essential to appreciate the technological and organizational challenges that gave rise to self-service banking. As a result, the case is made that business histories of the late twentieth century will be incomplete without proper consideration to the impact of computer technology on the different aspects of business organizations.

Spina bifida is a defect in which the vertebral arch of the spinal column is either incompletely formed or absent. Failure of closure of the neural tube during the third week of gestation leads to the constellation of defects observed in patients with meningomyelocele or open spina bifida. Myelomeningocele is the most common neural tube defect and the most severe birth defect compatible with long-term survival. It is associated with several characteristic central nervous system anomalies. Leak of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) is commonly observed. The major indication for early operative repair (within 48 hours of delivery) is prevention of infection. Protection of the exposed neural tissue from trauma and drying is essential. An understanding of the pathophysiology and associated conditions of myelomeningocele helps guide anesthetic management of these patients.

From the historically resonant Abbey Theatre, theatre spaces have had an influence on the ways in which Irish theatre has developed over the course of the twentieth century, from the limited proscenium arch stage of the early Abbey to the increasing exploration of found spaces and site-specific work in the 1990s and early twenty-first century. A geography of Irish theatre must take account of the significance of the place of performance in the creation of theatrical meaning. The space of the Abbey, as the national theatre, has been haunted by its past, whereas the aim of the Gate was to create a neutral space for its modernist creations, while utopian plans for an open-air amphitheatre in Achill or radical designs for the Lyric, Belfast, were never realized. The many new theatres of recent times have created untethered spaces without past associations.

The cardiac neural crest (CNC) plays pivotal roles in numerous steps of cardiac development. Every aspect of the CNC cell’s lifespan is highly orchestrated, from its induction in the dorsal neural tube to its migration to its differentiation at its final destination. During migration, CNC cells are affected by their environment and simultaneously modulate the extra-cellular milieu through which they migrate. In the pharyngeal arches, CNC cells repattern the originally symmetrical arch arteries, producing the great arteries. Because the cardiac neural crest is essential for many aspects of heart development, it is unsurprising that human CNC-related syndromes have severe phenotypes. This chapter describes how CNC cells are formed and contribute to their final destinations. Essential signalling pathways are presented in the context of CNC development, and CNC-related syndromes are included to highlight this population’s broad importance during development.

Inflectional classes are an instance of autonomous morphology, where expression in form cross-cuts syntactically relevant distinctions. However, most analyses assume some kind of ‘containment’, where choice of inflectional allomorphs is largely restricted to a part of speech. In default inheritance accounts of morphology higher defaults are assumed to correspond to recognizable parts of speech. Data from Archi and Noon indicate that violations of containment are not so implausible, but even here there is a role for principles, such as Network Morphology’s ‘morphological projection’, or Spencer’s ‘morpholexically coherent lexicon’, that entail a relationship between parts of speech and default morphological classes.

This chapter describes the ARC model of three core strategies for developing effective human service organizations. These include (1) embedding guiding organizational principles, (2) providing organizational component tools for identifying and addressing service barriers, and (3) developing shared mental models. The early pre-Socratics’ major speculative and critical initiatives—in particular Anaximander’s conceptions of the justice of the cosmos and of the apeiron as its archē and Xenophanes’s polemics against immorality and anthropomorphism in the depiction of the gods and against any claim to divine inspiration—appear to break with Hesiod’s form of thought. But the conceptual, critical, and ethical depth of Hesiod’s own rethinking of the lore that he inherited complicates this picture. Close examination of each of their major initiatives together with the relevant passages in Hesiod shows that even in the course of departing from his thought, Anaximander and Xenophanes also reappropriate and renew it. A postscript to this chapter poses some questions for future inquiry into Heraclitus’s and Parmenides’s receptions of Hesiod.

This chapter paints the arc of Fred Korematsu’s World War II resistance and legal challenge through his 1980s coram nobis case reopening and the 1988 Civil Liberties Act’s apology and reparations. It extends the arc over 9/11 controversies through Korematsu’s amicus brief in the Rasul Guantanamo Bay indefinite detention case and the Korematsu, Hirabayashi, and Yasui families’ brief in support of journalists’ efforts to stop threats of incarceration for protected speech and association activities in the Hedges case. The insights shared and prescriptions advanced in those friend-of-the-court briefs—particularly about the significance of judicial independence—are then enlivened by Judge Ambro’s poignant lessons-of-Korematsu opinion in the Hassan Muslim community harassment decision. The chapter closes by revisiting ongoing legal challenges to President Trump’s intensely contested 2017 exclusionary executive orders. It charts the Justice Department’s familiar refrain about the “unreviewable” nature of the executive’s national security justification—all the laws but one—as well as civil liberties groups’ constrasting advocacy for careful judicial scrutiny.
