Abstract In gallinaceous birds and other nidifugous species, it is thought that effective incubation does not start before the last egg is laid, and young hatch synchronously (LACK, 1968). We investigated the egg-laying and nest-attendance pattern of the precocial nidifugous red Burmese Junglefowl Gallus gallus spadiceus, and its consequences for the asynchrony of embryo development and of hatching. Eggs were laid in sequences, followed by pause days. Egg-weight in these sequences decreased by 0.6 g/egg. When laying, females sat in the nest for 1-3 h/day, and attended the nest overnight on days on which the last eggs of a clutch were laid. At the moment the last egg was laid, first eggs were already attended for 40 h (range 16-84 h), which resulted in extreme developmental asynchrony at the end of laying (measured as the diameter of the area vasculosa). Last eggs of clutches decreased markedly in weight (by more than 1 g/egg) and had shorter incubation times than the heavier first eggs. Eggs hatched asynchronously over a period of 15 h (range 7-33 h) and in the order of laying. The development of incubation behaviour, asynchrony of embryo development and of hatching of the precocial nidifugous Junglefowl, corresponded to a high degree to what is known of altricial species.

Language teaching is a field in constant evolution and the use of technology has boosted its development. This article explores the design and the implementation of synchronous and asynchronous learning activities to develop oral skills in an online English course. The article uses a mix-methods approach that combines qualitative and quantitative research methods. The participants in the study were 6 graduate students. The main findings of this investigation show that the synchronous learning activities prompt errors that translate into opportunities for learning. These results show that the use of asynchronous learning activities produce errors despite the fact that the participants have time to prepare and anticipate language inaccuracies. The results suggest that the use of asynchronous learning activities promotes the development of language awareness as participants can identify general categories of errors.

The present work aims to analyze from a methodological and instrumental point of view the development of asynchronous motor propulsion systems. For this purpose, PWM and SVM modulation methods, FOC and DTC vector control techniques, as well as their advantages and disadvantages are described. The theoretical bases and functional schemes of FOC and DTC control are given, including the asynchronous motor mathematical model, similar to the direct current motor model. Special attention is paid to creating of a common meaning for describing the components operation equations of the traction system, equations that can be used for system modeling and simulation. The paper also refers to a series of modern voltage converters with vector control, which are produced by several companies in different countries and are intended for the control of three-phase asynchronous motors. The results of the study create a basis for research and development of traction systems with multiphase asynchronous motors for urban electric passenger vehicles.

Users are restricted to cooking when, and where, the sun is shining. Furthermore, the cooking temperature can not readily be raised or lowered as desired. In contrast, the Wilson solar cooker is designed to permit use under conditions characterized by low or no insulation. Furthermore, the design would facilitate users adjusting temperatures. These temperatures would reach levels as high as 258° C. In order to validate the concept, construction of one prototype was initiated. Lithium nitrate, the heat-storage material, was shown to meet the stated requirements of storing heat at a constant temperature of 258° C for up to six hours. Furthermore, this heat-storage material stored heat at temperatures above the boiling point of water, for up to 25 hours. Thus, it is expected that a meal for six people can be prepared up to six hours after charging of the thermal battery.
by P. Femi Akinwale.
S.M.

This thesis examines the use of a structured design methodology in the design of asynchronous circuits so that high level constructs can be specified purely in terms of signal exchanges and without the intrusion of lower level concepts. Trace theory is used to specify a multi-processor Forth machine at a high level then part of the design is further elaborated using trace theory operations to (insure that the behaviours of the lower level constructs will combine to give the high level specified behaviour without locking or other hazards. A novel form of threaded language to take advantage of the machine architecture is developed. At suitable points the design is tested by simulation. The stack element which is designed is reduced to an electric circuit which is itself tested by simulation to verify the design.

Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Doutor em Engenharia Electrotécnica e de Computadores
A model-based development approach (MBDA) for Globally-Asynchronous Locally- Synchronous (GALS) Distributed Embedded Systems (DESs) is proposed. This approach relies on the GALS-DESs specification through (low- or high-level) Petri net classes, which ensure that the created models are GALS, locally deterministic, distributable, networkindependent, and platform-independent and support their simulation, verification, and implementation (using simulation, model-checking, and code generation tools). The use of network- and platform-independent models enable the use of heterogeneous communication networks to support the distributed components interaction and enable the use of heterogeneous platforms to support the components and the communication nodes implementation. To enable the proposed MBDA, Petri nets are extended with a set of the concepts, most notably time-domains and asynchronous-channels. Algorithms to support the verification of GALS-DES models and their decomposition into implementable sub-models are also proposed. A tool chain framework (IOPT-tools) was extended with this work proposals, supporting their validation and the GALS-DESs development.
Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia - grant ref. Incorporating interprofessional collaboration competencies into both undergraduate pre-licensure and graduate health science students poses challenges for academic health science centers. Certain student groups may have less opportunity to participate in interprofessional learning experiences due to demands of individual programs of study and conflicts in scheduling time with other disciplines. A group of interprofessional higher education faculty members created an innovative online asynchronous interprofessional experience with the primary goals of meeting accreditation standards for specific programs and providing interprofessional education (IPE) to students who were unable to participate in traditional face-to-face IPE experiences already established at the institution. This guide will highlight the process of design and development of the learning opportunity, from conception to implementation. The pilot of the asynchronous online IPE experience served as a model for the transition of the original in-person model to virtual IPE during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The publication explores the features of the digital technologies’ usage to organize the work of the Young Scientists’ Councils and describes the best practices. The digital transformation of society and the quarantine restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have forced the use of various digital technologies for scientific communication, the organization of work for youth associations, and the training of students and Ph.D. students. An important role in increasing the prestige of scientific activity and encouraging talented young people to participate in scientific projects belongs to the Young Scientists’ Councils, which are created at scientific institutions and higher education institutions. It is determined that the peculiarities of the work of Young Scientists’ Councils are in providing conditions for further staff development of the institution in which they operate; contribution to the social, psychological and material support of young scientists and Ph.D. students; creating an environment for teamwork and collaborative partnership; development of leadership and organizational qualities; contribution to the development of digital competence. The advantages of using electronic social networks in higher education and research institutions are analyzed, namely: general popularity and free of charge; prompt exchange of messages and multimedia data; user-friendly interface; availability of event planning functions, sending invitations, setting reminders; support of synchronous and asynchronous communication between network participants; possibility of access from various devices; a powerful tool for organizing the learning process; possibility of organization and work of closed and open groups; advertising of various events, etc. Peculiarities of managing the activity of the Young Scientists’ Council with the use of digital technologies are determined. The Young Scientists’ Council is a social system, and therefore the management of this system refers to social management. The effectiveness of the digital technologies’ usage to manage the activities of the Young Scientists’ Council depends on the intensity and need for their use to implement organizational, presentation functions and to ensure constant communication. The areas to apply digital technologies for the work managing of Young Scientists’ Councils are sorted as the presentation of activity; distribution of various information for young scientists; conducting questionnaires, surveys; organization and holding of scientific mass events; managing of thematic workgroups, holding of work meetings. It is generalized and described the experience of electronic social networks usage for organizing and conducting of scientific mass events.
