As coastal urbanization increases globally, the subsequent effects on marine animals, especially endangered species, inhabiting nearshore waters have become a research priority. The smalltooth sawfish Pristis pectinata, once abundant in US waters, now only persists in a few parts of its former range, including South Florida. Many areas utilized by smalltooth sawfish are estuarine systems or other shallow coastal habitats, making this species particularly vulnerable to threats associated with coastal development. To date, P. pectinata has been understudied in the waters in and around Biscayne B

A new suprabenthic mysid, Mysidopsis cachuchoensis sp. nov., is described from specimens sampled with a suprabenthic sled at the ‘Le Danois' Bank (the ‘El Cachucho' Marine Protected Area; southern Bay of Biscay). The main distinguishing features of this new species are the structure of its eyestalk and antennal scale as well as the armature of its telson and uropodal endopods. Inferred from the present unique record (828 m depth, inner basin between the bank and the Cantabrian shelf), it seems to be a rare endemic species of the bank, living on muddy bottoms of the upper bathyal.

The role of mangroves as essential fish habitat has been a focus of extensive research. However, recent evidence has shown that this role should not be evaluated in isolation from surrounding habitats such as seagrass beds and hard-bottom communities. For example, submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) communities provide potential sources of food and shelter for fish species that may reside in the mangroves, but may also undergo ontogenetic migrations and daily home-range movements into neighboring habitats. Which kind of imagination do we need to rethink Miami in the advent of sea-level rise? Most of the South Florida region was a subtropical wetland until just 120 years ago. In the land natives called Pa-hay-Okee (grassy river), we build a 20th-century industrial sprawl and completely transformed the ecology of the region by altering significant parts of the wild into rural. This is not an isolated story for South Florida. Today more than 50% of living organisms, plants, and ecological systems in the world are determined by human industrialization.

The habitats within Biscayne National Park consist of rocky coast lines, Biscayne Bay (a shallow water bay), over 40 mangrove islands, and coral reefs. This ecosystem lies near the large metropolitan area of Miami, suburban development, a nuclear power plant, and has several canals that drain from the mainland into Biscayne National Park or close to park boundaries. As a result of the park?s proximity to a large population, it endures heavy usage. The park is a popular destination for anglers and boaters. All the aforementioned factors put stressors on the park ecosystem. The South Florida/Car

This Regional Sediment Management technical report outlines initial steps to implement a proof-of-concept physical model to develop demonstration-scale evidence that supports managed wetland transgression through sediment augmentation via a thin-layer placement strategy. The proof-of-concept physical model will evaluate the ability of thin-layer placement to increase elevation and enhance recruitment within coastal scrub mangrove wetlands most vulnerable to sea-level rise. The investigation sought to identify feasible project locations, sediment sources that included beneficial use of dredged

The mangrove forest ecosystem is a critical coastal resource in South Florida’s Biscayne National Park (BISC); Salt River Bay National Historical Site and Ecological Preserve (SARI) in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands; and the Virgin Islands National Park (VIIS) in St John, U.S. Virgin Islands. Mangrove wetlands provide flood control, storm protection, shore stabilization, water filtration (capturing soil runoff), carbon sequestration, and habitat for fish and wildlife communities. The economic value of the services derived from mangroves has been estimated as high as $200,000–$900,000 ha-1 (Uni

This report documents the bank erosion modeling performed under Task 6 (HEC-RAS Sediment Modeling) of the Old, Mississippi, Atchafalaya, and Red (OMAR) Rivers System Technical Assessment. The objectives of the bank erosion modeling effort were to compare the relative impact various flow scenarios might have on bank retreat on a stretch of the Atchafalaya River between Simmesport, LA, and the Whiskey Bay Pilot Channel. The effort included compilation of field and soil boring data, selection of bank retreat sites, creation of representative soil profiles for the reach, calibration of soil parame
