Four synallactid specimens were collected during four deep-water benthic fauna surveys (2013–2018) conducted at three seamounts (‘Jiaolong’, ‘Y3’, and ‘M4’) and the Ganquan Plateau in the South China Sea, tropical Western Pacific Ocean, at depths ranging from 344 to 3610 m. Morphological examination of these specimens revealed four new species belonging to three genera, which are described as Synallactes tenuibrachiussp. nov., Bathyplotes liaoisp. nov., Bathyplotes varicolumnasp. nov., and Amphigymnas ganquanisp. nov. The gross morphology, histology, ultrastructure and periodicity of gonad development of the bathyal aspidochirote holothurian Bathyplotes natans is described and compared with the ‘tubule recruitment model’ proposed for aspidochirote holothurians. As B. natans grows, additional gonad tubules develop at the anterior end of the gonad basis. Oocyte development in these tubules is non-seasonal and the population of oocytes consists of both pre-vitellogenic and vitellogenic oocytes as well as some large oocytes undergoing phagocytic breakdown. Vitellogenesis is similar to that described previously

The 2009 expedition with the research vessel Miriky sampled the sublittoral and bathyal waters of the northern Mozambique Channel. This exploration campaign resulted in a small, but very diverse collection of holothuroids comprising 174 specimens representing 31 species, 18 genera, 10 families and 5 orders. Of these species, many were hitherto unknown for Madagascar or even for the Indian Ocean, and six, Bathyplotes aymeric sp. nov., Holothuria (Cystipus) yann sp. nov., Holothuria (Stauropora) bo sp. nov., Holothuria (Metriatyla) alex sp. nov., Holothuria (Theelothuria) cyrielle sp.nov., Molpa

AbstractWe describe a new association for Antarctica, involving an holothuroid host,Bathyplotes bongrainiVaney, 1914, and a parasitic polynoid polychaete,Eunoe opalinaMcIntosh, 1885, which lives on the host body. Both species have never been recorded in the study area, the Ross Sea. The ecological definition of this partnership is difficult to assess, being a mix of phoresis, protective association, parasitism and, possibly, kleptocommensalism.Eunoe opalinaemerges also as a true predator, ingesting several food items that do not belong to the diet ofBathyplotes. The Caribbean is considered a unique biogeographic region that represents an important hotspot of marine diversity in the Atlantic Ocean. The Caribbean Continental Slope of Central America (CCCA) is a largely unexplored area that exhibits a variety of habitats. Among this unstudied biodiversity, special importance has been given to the benthic communities associated with deep bottoms, a diverse group that plays a major role in the ocean carbon cycling and nutrient flux. Echinoderms are one of the main benthic deep sea taxa, in which Holothuroidea is the globally dominant class. We present the
