Abstract Factors associate with borderline or invaded margins in breast cancer surgery at the Val d’Aurelle Montpellier CRLC Véronique Mboua Batoum*, Esther Dina Bell, Christianne Nsahlai, Junie Annick Metogo Ntsama, Esther Juliette Meka, Marian Gutowski, Simon Thezenas, William Jacot *Corresponding autor : vbatoum@gmail.com Introduction: The inadequate status of the resection margins after breast cancer surgery is an important predictor of local tumor recurrence. The objective of our study was to determine the factors associated with positive or invaded resection margins. Methodology: Our retrospective study included a cohort of 652 patients with early invasive breast cancer who underwent breast cancer conserving surgery at the Val d’Aurelle Regional Cancer Center. We defined positive margins as those with a distance of less than or equal to 2 mm from the tumour. The data were analysed using STATA® 10.0 software. Results: In our study, The median distance from the tumour to the surgical resection site was 5mm [0.0 - 35.0mm]. Resection margins were positive in 208 patients (31.9%). The rate of positive resection margins was significantly higher in non-menopausal patientss (P =0,0050), in those with tumours less than 2 cm in size (P = 0,0004), with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) component and without lymph node involvement (P =0,0082). Re-excision surgery was performed in 229 patients (35.1%). Conclusion: Consideration of each of these factors associated with positive resection margins shoud help the surgeons to perform a wider excision, in other to obtain clear resection margin during the initial breast cancer surgery. Ao longo dos últimos anos, as fórmulas cosméticas têm evoluído consideravelmente, tornando os produtos para maquiagem excelentes coadjuvantes para tratar e proteger a pele e seus anexos. Sabe-se que o uso de fotoprotetores de amplo espectro de absorção ultravioleta é essencial na prevenção de neoplasias cutâneas, principalmente de áreas que sofrem exposição diária ao sol, incluindo os lábios. Desta forma, este trabalho tem como objetivo o desenvolvimento de uma formulação de batom de diferentes cores (marrom, vermelho, rosa e roxo), com propriedades que visam não só promover emoliência, hidratação e coloração aos lábios, mas também oferecer proteção contra os raios ultravioletas (UV). Os resultados obtidos indicam que os valores de FPS (Fator de Proteção Solar) das amostras de batons permaneceram na categoria de alta proteção, com capacidade de manter a retenção de água na pele, fácil espalhamento sobre o lábio, dureza condizente com o tipo de produto e baixa possibilidade de deterioração oxidativa. Desta forma, os batons desenvolvidos apresentam características comerciais desejáveis de hidratação, coloração e emoliência, além de alta fotoproteção, podendo atuar na prevenção de câncer labial.

O estudo abordado teve como tema a formulação de batom vegano, proporcionando análises macroscópicas e organolépticas do produto desenvolvido e suas etapas, utilizando os sentidos olfativo, tátil e visual como critérios de qualidade. Logo, o objetivo geral deste trabalho foi analisar como é feito um batom, a partir da utilização de matérias-primas veganas. Trata-se de uma pesquisa experimental, que buscou utilizar componentes que não foram testados em animais do reino metazoa, ou seja, procurou-se por alternativas que não envolvessem o uso de animais. Durante as etapas de criação, foi necessário realizar extrações de compostos naturais, como hibisco e farinha de uva, para as quais foram utilizados solventes como álcool etílico 98,2% e acetona. Os resultados permitiram compreender que o etanol é um composto adequado para obtenção de extratos, pois não provoca grandes alterações de cor, ao contrário da combinação de propanona e farinha de uva, que resultou em uma solução ácida com alterações físico-químicas, principalmente na coloração. Portanto, conclui-se que o trabalho realizado proporcionou o entendimento sobre o comportamento e a atuação de alguns solventes durante os processos de extração. Além disso, contribuiu para o conhecimento de alternativas mais sustentáveis na formulação de cosméticos, especialmente batons veganos, e para a análise sensorial e macroscópica desses produtos.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the meanings laid down in “Batum”, the last play by M.A. Bulgakov. The author reviews the sources which the playwright relied on when writing his play, and the need to strictly follow their letter and spirit, which put the writer in an extremely tough political framework. The article argues that the play axis is the contrast between the images of Stalin and Nicholas II. In the meantime, the last Russian Tsar is depicted in a caricature way not corresponding to historical truth. The author of the article notes that in the image of the last Russian Tsar the playwright followed the Soviet dramaturgy tradition. It is also emphasized that a negative, caricatured depicting of Nicholas II image inevitably entailed a blasphemous attitude towards the great Russian St. Seraphim of Sarov referred to in the play. The work shows that the image of Stalin contains unambigious hints on paraphrase of gospel plots which is essentially sacriledge. The play “Batum” is considered in the article as a quite predictable failure in literature legacy of M.A. Bulgakov.

Este trabalho avaliou a qualidade de sombras e batons novos, usados, vencidos e válidos, doados por consumidores e adquiridos no Brasil. Testes microbiológicos foram realizados para avaliar a presença dos microrganismos patógenos Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus e Escherichia coli e a contagem de mesófilos aeróbios totais. Para quantificar o chumbo, as amostras foram submetidas à digestão ácida. Após o preparo, as amostras foram analisadas em condições otimizadas e validadas por GF AAS. Os planejamentos experimentais empregados para otimização do método foram: Planejamento Fatorial Completo 2³ e CCD. Das 25 amostras analisadas, 18 (75%) podem ser consideradas reprovadas segundo os limites microbianos estabelecidos pela legislação sanitária brasileira. Dentre as amostras de sombras reprovadas, todas eram usadas, quatro estavam com prazos de validade expirados, três não apresentavam validade na embalagem primária; dentre os batons reprovados que eram usados, cinco estavam com prazos de validade expirados, quatro não apresentavam validade na embalagem primária e um era válido; um batom reprovado era novo e válido. Nossos dados mostram a importância do consumidor utilizar e armazenar os produtos em condições adequadas, para evitar a contaminação microbiana. As concentrações de chumbo obtidas nos batons variaram de 0,45 ± 0,08 mg kg-1 a 6,8 ± 0,2 mg kg-1, e nas sombras de <LOD a 6,2 ± 0,4 mg kg-1, sendo que todas abaixo do nível máximo para Pb. Observou-se que, em geral, as amostras de sombras apresentaram maiores concentrações de chumbo do que os batons e que os produtos de uso infantil apresentaram menor concentração desse metal. Abstract This work evaluated the quality of new, used, expired and valid samples of eye shadows and lipsticks donated by consumers and purchased in Brazil. Microbiological tests were performed to evaluate the presence of the pathogenic microorganisms Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli and the counts of total aerobic mesophilic microorganisms. In order to quantify lead, samples were submitted to the acid digestion in a block digester. The samples were analyzed under optimized and validated conditions by GF AAS. A 23 Factorial Design and CCD were employed to method optimization. Considering the 25 analyzed samples, 75% can be considered reproved according to the microbial limits established by Brazilian sanitary law. Among reproved eye shadows, all were used, 4 were out of their expiry dates and 3 were had no expiry date indicated on their primary packaging. Among reproved lipsticks that were used, 5 were out of their expiry dates, 4 had no expiry date indicated on their primary packaging and 1 was not expired; one of the reproved lipsticks was new and non-expired. Our data show the importance of using and storing this type of products under appropriate conditions. Lead concentrations found in lipsticks varied from 0.45 ± 0.08 mg kg-1 to 6.8 ± 0.2 mg kg-1, and in eye shadows from <LOD to 6.2 ± 0.4 mg kg-1, being all samples below to the maximum level. In general, eye shadows samples presented higher lead concentrations than to lipsticks and that child use products presented less concentration of this metal. Keywords: Lipsticks. Eye Shadows. Lead. O vídeo é o registro etnográfico da ação imersiva de Sophia no evento a partir do jogo de improviso, em que a drag dá o batom para as pessoas escreverem no corpo da gata palavras-ações agressivas que já recebemos devido termos nossos corpos fora do padrão intolerante heteronormativo, branco, rico e patriarcal. Uma mulher, no evento Belém +30 pintou meu olho com o batom vermelho, e enquanto aquela mulher forte, de aparência de guerreira bruxa, me pintava ao mesmo tempo ela desabava sobre mim, lacrimejava e dizia baixinho: “foi um soco no olho...”. Eu também chorava dentro de mim, lembrava que na noite anterior, eu mesma, tinha sofrido agressão na rua, quando levaram minha bolsa com materiais de trabalho e me deixaram um soco no olho. A dor naquele momento, enquanto ela pintava meu olho, era mais do que real, imagens me vieram a cabeça, lembranças de agressões que tantas amigas mulheres e bichas e travestis já sofreram; suei frio, gaguejei, engoli o desespero e me fortaleci na troca afetiva espontânea, na troca de olhares, no abraço, e nas forças de tantas palavras escritas e ouvidas que me dão coragem para prosseguir com ações e práticas artísticas de resistência.Assista aqui.

Le cœur du questionnement porte sur l'impact sur les Trois provinces (Elviye-i Selâse) de trois processus combinés et partiellement successifs : la déprise du pouvoir russe ; l'installation de l'emprise ottomane-turque ; l'affirmation de centres régionaux face aux centres que sont Moscou et Istanbul. Processus auxquels il faut ajouter les dimensions relatives aux groupes religieux et ethniques locaux, extrêmement complexes même si les Arméniens des trois provinces ont échappé aux problèmes de 1915-1917. Dans ce contexte les Trois provinces (nom turc de cette région) que la Turquie a perdues en 1878 et qu'elle a provisoirement reprises en 1918, sont marquées par des dynamiques locales qui se sont articulées avec la construction de l'État turc au sortir de la Première Guerre mondiale, et plus largement avec les transformations rapides des équilibres stratégiques entre 1917 et 1921 dans une zone marquée par le croisement entre trois grandes lignes de force : l'expansion russe vers la Méditerranée (même si elle est provisoirement en suspens) ; la ligne transversale représentée par la stratégie britannique d'isolement des mers chaudes face à l'expansion russe ; la ligne d'expansion turque (et non plus ottomane) vers l'Asie centrale turcophone (le Touran) qui s'étend du nord de la Turquie actuelle à l'ouest de la Chine. Or à ces axes internationaux correspondent, sur le plan régional (Caucase du sud), des logiques transnationales qui explique la création, sous égide sociale-démocrate à partir de la révolution bolchevique, du Sejm (Assemblée) transcaucasien, qui signa avec la 3e Armée turque l'armistice d'Erzincan le 5 décembre 1917. Mais l'existence d'une entité régionale résulte avant tout de la décomposition politique de l'Empire russe, et d'une affirmation complexe des diverses nationalités de la région, dont les Arméniens qui, en 1917, semblaient mieux organisés (bien sûr côté russe). Il s'agit donc d'une monographie régionale centrée sur les interactions entre les acteurs locaux, régionaux, et extérieurs. Les diverses puissances étatiques en conflit pour la région pouvaient être assez éloignées (l'action des troupes britanniques et italiennes est ici très intéressante)
The core of the questioning concerns the impact of the three successive processes on the Three Provinces (Elviye-i Selâse): overturning the Russian power, establishing the Ottoman-Turkish influence, and asserting the claims of regional centers against Moscow and Istanbul. In these three provinces, there are different religious and local groups. There was are quite an entanglement, and even the Armenians who stayed away from the problems in 1915-1917 are part of it. “Three provinces” is the Turkish expression used for a part of the Balkans before 1878, but then it migrated and clearly referred to the provinces of Batumi, Kars and Ardahan), which Turkey lost in 1878 and recaptured temporarily in 1918. The broader strategic balance was at stake precisely in this region, right when the Turkish State, at the end of World War I, extended its reach. Between 1917 and 1921 it was the place where the strategic ambitions of three main actors intersected: Russia's expansion into the Mediterranean (even if suspended), the British strategy of isolating the warm seas from the Russian southern drive, and the Turkish expansion from present-day northern Turkey to western China and into Turkish-speaking Central Asia. However, these international endeavors were part of a multilayer grid with strong regional (Southern Caucasian) actors. For a while, trespassing the national perspective, social-democracy was in a position to foster the creation of a transnational Caucasian Sejm (Parliament). This body signed the Erzincan Armistice with the third Turkish Army on December 5,1917, after the Bolshevik Revolution. But this unique situation resulted, above all, from the political disintegration of the Russian Empire and the complexity of the region's various national dynamics. At the time, the Armenians seem to have been better organized. Therefore, this study is a regional monograph that focuses on interactions between local, regional and external actors. The various states competing ih the region could indeed intervene in the region from afar (British and Italian troops provide interesting examples)

In Brazil, the area of Literature in the newspapers was the way found by many writers as a way to promote their written as receiving a salary. The show was one of the first literary manifestations in the communication vehicle newspaper. Then came the chronic and finally the female columns, in our case being studied, the female speaker Clarice Lispector. The author of A hora da estrela is known for her novels and short stories, but also wrote columns for newspapers of Rio de Janeiro, in the 50 and 60. Our dissertation consists of a reinterpretation of the female speaker Clarice Lispector, seeking not only the image of women represented in these pages, but recognize them as more a process of fictional creation of the author, in which mix recipes, advice, fashion, beauty confined to the feminine universe, published in books, Mail female (2006) and only for women (2008). The analysis and describe the image of woman, presents the historical image of his emancipation process and aims to find a moment when this woman abandons her domestic functions to return his gaze to general issues of society.
No Brasil, o espaço da Literatura nos jornais foi o caminho encontrado por muitos escritores como forma de divulgar seus escritos ou como de receber um salário. O folhetim foi uma das primeiras manifestações literárias, no veículo de comunicação, jornal. Depois vieram a crônica e, finalmente, as colunas femininas, no nosso caso em estudo, as colunas femininas de Clarice Lispector. A autora de A hora da estrela é conhecida por seus romances e contos, entretanto escreveu, também, colunas para jornais do Rio de Janeiro, nas décadas de 50 e 60. A nossa dissertação consiste em uma releitura das colunas femininas de Clarice Lispector, buscando não só a imagem da mulher representada em tais páginas, mas reconhecê-las como mais um processo de criação ficcional da autora, no qual se misturam receitas, conselhos, moda, beleza circunscritos ao universo feminino, publicadas nos livros, Correio Feminino (2006) e Só para mulheres (2008). A análise, além de descrever a imagem de mulher, apresenta a imagem histórica de seu processo de emancipação e almeja encontrar alguns instantes em que essa mulher abandona suas funções domésticas para voltar seu olhar para questões gerais da sociedade.

Resumo: A presente dissertação discute a aventura de mulheres no território masculino do gênero musical rap, bem como procura contribuir para a reflexão do que nossa sociedade e o Hip Hop estão dizendo sobre si mesmos quando falam e atuam sobre a diferença de gênero. O trabalho que aqui apresento, mostra que apesar da rara presença dessa questão nos trabalhos acadêmicos que discutem esse tema, as mulheres estão na cultura Hip Hop desde seu início, fazendo música, dançando break, grafitando ou como simples fruidoras que consomem a produção cultural dos ¿manos¿ indo a festas e eventos. Há também a participação ¿indireta¿ das mulheres no papel de mães, irmãs, companheiras atuantes dos bastidores da vida dos homens rappers. Essa presença, em especial a das mães, é bastante enfatizada em algumas composições. As experiências familiares de matrifocalidade vivenciada pelos jovens rappers e a ausência da figura paterna, fazem com que a mulher seja idealizada por grande parte dos homens não só no Hip Hop, mas na sociedade em geral
Abstract: The present dissertation discusses the adventure of women in male territory of the kind rap music, well as looking for the help to the reflexion, tat our society and Hip Hop ar saying themselves, while tey talk about and act on the disitinguishnes of the way. This wor shows in despite of the rar presence abou this question at academical works, which discuss thes resume explaining the women's sharing on Hip Hop culture since it began, making musics, dancing break, graphiting or being simplilu vicious, who consumpt the cultural make-upfrom ¿brothers¿, goin to parties and events. There is the indirect women's sharing on the paper as mothers, sisters, girlfriends acting escorts of the hits inside the rapper men's live. This presence, in special of the mothers, so closelu encourages on some compositions. The matrifocal family experiences, that is gotten on by youngs rapper and the ausence of the paternity picture, like making with the women, whom been idealized by almost men, no only in Hip Hop, but in the society generall

Esta investigación, de carácter cualitativo, tiene como objetivo general investigar las determinaciones socio-históricas culturales e ideológicas relativas a la presencia femenina en el ámbito de la educación profesional de nivel medio del Curso Técnico de Mecánica del Instituto Federal Sul-rio-grandense (IFSul), Campus Pelotas. Los objetivos específicos consisten en presentar sucesos referentes a la educación formal de las mujeres a través de la historia y explicitar el legado de la cultura técnica y tecnológica, por medio de una descripción de la presencia del IFSul y del curso de Mecánica en la ciudad de Pelotas. El trabajo se divide en tres capítulos: en el primero, luego de las consideraciones sobre la educación escolarizada de las mujeres, realizo la presentación de la Institución; en el segundo, discurro a cerca de la fundamentación teórica, con énfasis en el Análisis Crítico del Discurso (ACD) y en los estudios de género; en el tercero, describo los mecanismos de investigación y realizo el análisis. El corpus se compone de las respuestas obtenidas por medio de entrevistas enviadas por e-mail a trece mujeres, egresas e ingresantes del curso de Mecánica, curso concebido originalmente como un espacio predominantemente masculino. La entrevista se compone de cuestiones que remiten a los contextos familiar, escolar y profesional. El análisis de los textos de las alumnas, a partir de la materialidad lingüística, indica los principales aspectos discursivos, en lo que respecta a la discriminación y/o preconcepto con relación a la elección del curso, los obstáculos y vergüenzas experimentados (o no) durante el mismo, así como las expectativas de las ingresantes y la inserción de las egresas en el mercado laboral. El predominio (o no) de una visión estereotipada y dicotómica con relación al género social posibilita la reflexión a cerca de las implicaciones y sentidos atribuidos a la educación de mujeres vinculada al área científica y tecnológica. ¿Será posible armonizar grasa con lápiz de labio y tacos altos en el desempeño de una profesión considerada bruta y racional?
A presente pesquisa, de natureza qualitativa, tem por objetivo geral investigar as determinações sócio-histórico culturais e ideológicas relativas à presença feminina no âmbito da educação profissionalizante de nível médio do Curso Técnico de Mecânica do Instituto Federal Sul-rio-grandense (IFSul), Campus Pelotas. Os objetivos específicos visam a apresentar ocorrências relativas à educação formal das mulheres no viés da história e a explicitar o legado da cultura técnica e tecnológica, por meio de uma descrição da presença do IFSul e do curso de Mecânica na cidade de Pelotas. O trabalho está dividido em três capítulos: no primeiro, após as considerações a respeito da educação escolarizada das mulheres, realizo a apresentação da Instituição; no segundo, discorro acerca da fundamentação teórica, com ênfase na Análise Crítica do Discurso (ACD) e nos estudos de gênero; no terceiro, descrevo os mecanismos de pesquisa e realizo a análise. O corpus é composto pelas respostas obtidas por meio de entrevistas enviadas por e-mail a treze mulheres, egressas e ingressantes da Mecânica, curso concebido originalmente como um espaço predominantemente masculino. A entrevista é composta de questões que remetem aos contextos familiar, escolar e profissional. A análise dos textos das alunas, a partir da materialidade linguística, indica os principais aspectos discursivos no que concerne à discriminação e/ou preconceito em relação à escolha do curso, os obstáculos e constrangimentos experimentados (ou não) durante o mesmo, bem como as expectativas das ingressantes e a inserção das egressas no mercado de trabalho. A predominância (ou não) de uma visão estereotipada e dicotômica em relação ao gênero social possibilita a reflexão acerca das implicações e sentidos atribuídos à educação de mulheres vinculada à área científica e tecnológica. Será possível harmonizar graxa com batom e salto alto no desempenho de uma profissão considerada bruta e racional?

This report details an internship with Theatre Baton Rouge, where I served as Marketing and Development Coordinator. In this paper I will provide an overview of the organization’s history, programming, and outreach along with a description of my 480 hour internship. This report outlines the workings of the theatre’s operations through investigation of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats, and industry best practices. This analysis will lay the groundwork for recommendations to Theatre Baton Rouge that will address leveraging the strengths, as well as use opportunities to combat the issues currently hindering the company from continued growth.

From the first idea, to research and comparing with other backpacks with foldable function (tele, usárna), and with backpacks associated with urban and streetwear function, I designed a backpack with a practical and functional design which opens questions of personal vs. public space. It plays with the question of lifestyle as a focal point of marketing. It speaks to young people, who spend their time in the city public space and occupy it in their own way. Technical parameters of the backpack are dependent of its functional needs, but the first idea came out of the needs of a modern young nomad, exploring the city public space.

Estudos sobre a diversidade e estrutura de populações em ambientes naturais, tanto preservados e como impactados, são importantes ferramentas para programas de conservação ambiental. Nesse sentido, pesquisas com foco em estudos populacionais de borboletas têm sido amplamente utilizadas para o aperfeiçoamento do conhecimento sobre a biologia e ecologia das espécies. Duas espécies do gênero Battus são encontradas no sul do Brasil: Battus polystictus e Battus polydamas. Apesar destas borboletas utilizarem como hospedeiras somente plantas do gênero Aristolochia, e de serem filogeneticamente muito próximas, ambas espécies apresentam hábitos ecológicos bastante distintos. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a dinâmica das populações de B. polydamas e B. polystictus ao longo de um ciclo anual, relacionando os padrões observados com a variação nos requerimentos ecológicos das espécies em função das condições climáticas, disponibilidade de recursos alimentares e de desempenho larval em diferentes plantas hospedeiras. As populações foram analisadas através de marcação-recaptura para estimar os padrões populacionais. As borboletas foram capturadas com rede entomológica, marcadas, analisadas e soltas no mesmo local de captura. Em laboratório, os testes de preferência alimentar e desempenho foram realizados em condições controladas de temperatura (25°C) e fotoperíodo (16L:8E), nos seguintes tratamentos: Battus polydamas x A.triangularis (n=60); Battus polydamas x A.sessilifolia (n=60); Battus polystictus x A.triangularis (n=15); Battus polystictus x A.sessilifolia (n=15). Os resultados deste trabalho mostraram que B. polydamas e B. polystictus têm requerimentos ecológicos diferentes, sendo a primeira mais tolerante a alterações ambientais. As populações das duas espécies de Battus não foram constantes no tempo, havendo variações estruturais e de densidade ao longo do ano. Os experimentos em laboratório mostraram que ambas as espécies de borboletas aceitam e podem se desenvolver nas plantas testadas, porém com desempenhos diferentes. Enquanto B. polydamas utiliza as hospedeiras de maneira equivalente, B. polystictus tem melhor desempenho em A. triangularis. De modo geral, os resultados obtidos sugerem que as dinâmicas das populações para ambas as espécies são influenciados principalmente pela estruturação ambiental dos habitats e pela disponibilidade de plantas hospedeiras. Os dados também sugerem que, quando em sintopia, ambas as espécies utilizem de maneira diferencial os recursos larvais disponíveis.

The present thesis intends to analyze female columns written by the writer and the journalist Clarice Lispector under two distinct pseudonyms and as a ghost-writer for three different newspapers from Rio de Janeiro in the 50’s and 60’s decades of the XX century. This analysis seeks to trace the female representation drawn from these columns for understanding of the women’s profile considered ideal at the time proposed. After the establishment of the conception of female disclosed by these pages is intended to show how the media acted on as a regulatory instance of the social field, responsible for maintaining an order of normatively anchored in naturalized notions through the discourse circulating at the time, which preached the role of the women as housekeepers and the men as breadwinners.
O presente trabalho se propõe a analisar colunas femininas escritas pela escritora e jornalista Clarice Lispector sob dois pseudônimos distintos e como ghost-writer para três diferentes jornais cariocas nas décadas de 50 e 60 do século XX. A análise busca mapear a representação do feminino traçada a partir desses textos para a compreensão do perfil de mulher considerado ideal no recorte proposto. Após o estabelecimento da concepção de feminino divulgada por essas páginas conselheiras, pretende-se mostrar como a mídia atua como uma instância regulatória do campo social, encarregada de manter uma ordem de normatividade ancorada em noções naturalizadas pelo discurso circulante da época, que pregava o papel da mulher enquanto rainha do lar e do homem como provedor da casa.

In this paper, we present a robotic locomotor with inertia-based actuation. The goal of this system is to generate various gait modes of a baton, consisting of two masses connected with a massless rod. First, a model for a baton prototype called Pony I is presented. This model incorporates the inertial forces generated by a rotating single pendulum. The model also accounts for the friction forces that arise in the contact points of the baton with the ground surface. We also developed an experimental prototype for a baton with a single-pendulum actuator. Consequently, we compared the nonlinear dynamics of the analytical and experimental systems. An improved double-pendulum actuation system was proposed for better regulation of the locomotion of the system and the orientation of the centrifugal force. Finally, demonstrated that this system generated steady forward locomotion.

Underwater fish of the class Batoidea, commonly known as rays and skates, use large cartilaginous wings to propel themselves through the water. This motion is of great interest in bioinspired robotics as an alternative propulsion mechanism. Prior research has focused primarily on the oscillating kinematics used by some species which resembles flapping; this study investigates undulatory motion induced by propagating sinusoidal waves along the fin. An analytical model of undulatory kinematics is presented and correlated with biological literature, and the model is then simulated via unsteady computational fluid dynamics and multiparticle collision dynamics. A bioinspired robot, Batoid Underwater Robotics Testbed (BURT), was developed to test the kinematics of the undulating propulsion system proposed. Finally, BURT was utilized as a platform to investigate engineering challenges in undulating Batoid robotics.

This paper presents the solution of the impact problem for a sliding/bouncing baton on flat and inclined planes subject to surface friction. The baton is assumed to have unilaterally constrained motion, which means one end slides on the ground while the other end collides with the ground. We use the impulse momentum approach and incorporate the impulse correlation ratio (ICR) hypothesis to solve the ground impact problem when the system has unilaterally constrained dynamics. Parametric investigations were carried out to examine the effect of the baton’s length and the inclined wall slope angle on the impulse correlation ratio. Numerical simulation and experiments were carried out to validate the model.

The area is one of the Pertamina EP’s working area which located in the frontier basin that has an acreage exceeding 10,000 sqkm. A major portion of the Mesozoic play in the basin is still under explored, whilst/whereas the existence of an active Cenozoic petroleum system in the offshore Matindok has been confirmed by Tiaka Producing Field. The main challenge in exploring the Mesozoic section in the Matindok Block is imaging it below the ophiolite complex / ultra-mafic layer of the Batui thrust, as well as the thick Neogene carbonate. These barriers inhibit the penetration of seismic energy that resulted in low-quality seismic data beneath the thrust. In order to generate its play concept, massive exploration efforts have been conducted in the Matindok Block since 2017. It consists of onshore geological fieldwork, high-resolution satellite data processing, and the new acquisition of shallow-marine transition 2D seismic data. Potential mature source rocks of the Triassic Tokala marine shale was found in the outcrops nearby the Batui thrust. In the seismic interpretation, the equivalent Jurassic to Cretaceous outcrops that dominated by the fluvio-deltaic sandstones, have been interpreted as pinched-out features along the margin of half graben structures. This area was compressed during the Late Miocene to Plio-Pleistocene shortening events, and intensively imbricated the Cenozoic to present-day sediments on the Batui thrust, but put the Paleozoic - Mesozoic half-grabens beneath the Batui thrust decollement. Finally, the finding of this study is able to demonstrate the petroleum-system risks assessment of the Mesozoic hydrocarbon potential.

This report documents an investigation of the hydraulic effects of dikes on water levels in the Mississippi River between Natchez, MS, and Baton Rouge, LA, conducted for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Mississippi Valley Division, Vicksburg, MS. The investigation was conducted using a previously calibrated Natchez-to-Baton Rouge Adaptive Hydraulics numerical model. The objectives were to alter roughness and height variables associated with the dikes and overbanks encompassed in the numerical model and evaluate their effects on water surface elevations. This academic exercise provides an indication of the relative level of impact associated with modifications to the dikes and overbanks for this portion of the Mississippi River and does not represent future plans or recommendations by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Steady flow simulations were simulated for 12 May 2011 to investigate the variation in model results during the peak of the 2011 flood on the Mississippi River.

Bank caving rates and associated total sediment supply were calculated along the Lower Mississippi River from Cairo, IL, to Baton Rouge, LA, using historical maps between 1765 and 1992. Comparison of these maps reveals that the added sediment loads from bank erosion have greatly declined through time. During the Pre-cutoff period (1765–1931), the cumulative sediment supply from bank caving between Cairo, IL, and Baton Rouge, LA, ranged from about 395 million cubic yards/year (MCY/yr) to 535 MCY/yr with a median value of approximately 470 MCY/yr. The 1880-1931 period had the highest rate of sediment supply from bank caving with a median value of approximately 610 MCY/yr. By the 1990s, the sediment supply from bank erosion was essentially eliminated as a result of the revetment program, with significant erosion being observed at only a few locations, totaling approximately 17 MCY/yr. This equates to approximately a 96% reduction in the amount of total sediment being supplied to the channel system from bank erosion.

This project developed a three-dimensional (3D) seepage model to evaluate efficiency of 84 relief wells and factors of safety (FoS) along the Profit Island vicinity levee (PIVL), north of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The PIVL model was built based on US Geological Survey MODFLOW-USG. Moreover, a 3D seepage model of RocScience RS3 was also built for a specific study of relief well experiments conducted by the US Army Corps of Engineers in the 1930s and 1940s. The PIVL model was calibrated with measured piezometric head data and relief well flow rates in 1997. Six flood scenarios were conducted: the extreme flood (56 feet), design flood (52.4 feet), 1997 flood (50 feet), 2008 flood (49.22 feet), 2017 flood (45.55 feet), and 2018 flood (49.1 feet). The modeling results show that FoS are all above 1.5 given relief wells at the 1997 design condition. FoS calculated by the blanket theory are more conservative than those by the PIVL model because designed discharge rates were not observed in the field. In comparison with measured flow rates in 2008, the PIVL modeling result indicates potential clogging at many relief wells. New piezometric data and well discharge data are recommended to re-evaluate factors of safety.
