Annotation:
This thesis is an investigation into the legitimacy and limits of the term "body art" in its vernacular sense, wherein it refers to methods of decorating or ornamenting the body, such as tattooing or piercing. Though the term is widely used and widely understood, it has rarely appeared in any writing which takes an explicitly arthistorical or art-critical approach, and has never been subjected to any sustained analysis which uses the methodologies deployed by specialists when engaging with other forms of art. If tattooing and its coincident technologies are "body art", they have not as yet been understood as such by art historians. The arguments made over the course of this work thus amount to a case for the applicability of art-historical and art-theoretical methodologies to body modification practice. The thesis first establishes the existence of a rhetorical yet broadly undefended case for the artistic status of practices which alter the form of the body. This claim is to be found amongst both the contemporary subcultural body modification community and amongst plastic surgeons. With particular reference to theories of art and aesthetics by John Dewey, Richard Shusterman, and Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari, the work investigates whether such claims are tenable. In light of these investigations, the thesis then presents a number of problems which immediately arise from such a claim - problems of authorship, ownership, objectivity and value - and attempts to resolve them through detailed analysis of a number of case-studies.

Body modification practices have become notably prevalent in the western world creating a need to re-evaluate the motivational factors that drive an individual to these practices and redefine how they are categorized in the psychology profession. Exploring the relationship between life events, age, gender, religiosity, personality type, and how these factors relate to the motivation to engage in various levels of body modification appears to be an approach less prevalent in the current literature. The goal of this study was to answer the main research question: Do the variables age, gender, life events, religiosity, and personality type collectively predict level of self-reported body modification? This study was non-experimental, utilizing self-report assessments to collect necessary data. Participants completed the assessments in person while attending a conference specifically for body art professionals. Data was analyzed quantitatively with IBM SPSS Statistics Version 23 software package using a multiple regression analysis. The variables age, gender, and spirituality were omitted from the regression analysis due to smaller than desired sample size. Personality type and life events served as the predictor variables with dimensions of body modification serving as the outcome variable with three categories: dimension of tattoos, quantity of piercings and quantity of extreme modifications defined as surgical procedures done outside of a medical setting by someone outside of the medical profession. Results indicated no correlation between the variables with the exception of quantity of extreme modifications and life events, which resulted in a statistically significant relationship. Suggestions for future study include replicating this study using a similar population but with a larger sample size to provide results that can be generalized across the body modification community.

Annotation:
This thesis investigates female cultures of body modification in contemporary Britain. I begin from the premise that women in current UK society are concerned about their appearance and subjected to significant media pressures to engage in body modification. By body modification I mean the methods which women use in order to alter their physical body and appearance. All methods (invasive or non-invasive; self-administered or other-administered; permanent or temporary) are considered, provided the intention of their use is primarily to alter the user’s physical appearance. Based on qualitative life-history interviews with thirty university-educated British women aged between eighteen and twenty-five my research investigates the choices of, motives for, influences on and relationships of women to their practices of body modification. The analysis chapters of this thesis deal with three key stages in my participants’ development during which body modification emerged as important. These are the point when my participants went to school, their years at university and their entry into the world of work. The analysis chapters focus on these three stages. The first one explores participants’ initial engagement with and experience of body modification during the school years. The second centres on their use of body modification while at university, and the final analysis chapter explores their engagement with these practices in the world of work. I also discuss my participants’ expectation of their future engagement with body modification. Unlike third-wave feminist discourse, which frequently refers to body modification in terms of freedom and choice, my findings offer a completely different understanding of women’s engagement in these practices. In the life stages I focus on, sociality and taking cue from others emerged as the most important aspects of women’s body modification decisions.

This thesis aims to analyze what the young people say about practices related to body modification, which refers to the making of voluntary body modifications and have the characteristic of irreversibility. The most popular techniques are popular: tattoos, p.cation of the tongue, branding, subcutaneous implantation, and pocketing the suspension. To perform the research we chose the Focus Group, which was done at the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Sul (IFRS) which is situated in the city of Rio Grande. Being organized in two phases: first, with students without body modification, in which 13 students participated in this meeting, the second was conducted with students who had some of the bodily changes mentioned above and four students participated in this meeting. This dissertation consists of two articles that appeared from the discussions that stood out during the performance of groups. In the first article, we discuss the formation of youth, linking them to the practices of body modification, we believe that the speeches the need to modify has been directed at young people. In the second article we try to discuss how the body interventions have produced the identities of these young subjects. From these tests some issues stood out, namely: the binding of the immaturity of youth, the preoccupation of assigning meaning / reason of the fact of getting a body modification, the production of identities focusing on the professional future: the power game between young people and parents to make changes, lest they repent while performing body modification, and, finally, we find that the themes present in both groups was about the concern with employability.

Windsor, Elroi J. „Regulating Healthy Gender: Surgical Body Modification among Transgender and Cisgender Consumers“. Digital Archive @ GSU, 2011. http://digitalarchive.gsu.edu/sociology_diss/55.

Der volle Inhalt der Quelle
Annotation:
Few bodies consistently portray natural or unaltered forms. Instead, humans inhabit bodies imbued with sociocultural meanings about what is attractive, appropriate, functional, and presentable. As such, embodiment is always gendered. The social, extra-corporeal body is a central locus for expressing gender. Surgical body modifications represent inherently gendered technologies of the body. But psychomedical institutions subject people who seek gender-crossing surgeries to increased surveillance, managing and regulating cross-gender embodiment as disorderly. Using mixed research methods, this research systematically compared transgender and cisgender (non-transgender) people’s experiences before, during, and after surgical body modification. I conducted a content analysis of 445 threads on a message board for an online cisgender surgery community, an analysis of 15 international protocols for transgender-specific surgeries, and 40 in-depth interviews with cisgender and transgender people who had surgery. The content analysis of the online community revealed similar themes among cisgender and transgender surgery users. However, detailed protocols existed only for transgender consumers of surgery. Interview findings showed that transgender and cisgender people reported similar presurgical feelings toward their bodies, similar cosmetic and psychological motivations for surgery, and similar benefits of surgery. For both cisgender and transgender people, surgery enhanced the inner self through improving the outer gendered body. Despite these similar embodied experiences, having a cisgender gender status determined respondents’ abilities to pursue surgery autonomously and with institutional support. Ultimately, this research highlights inequalities that result from gender status and manifest in psychomedical institutions by identifying the psychosocial impacts of provider/consumer or doctor/patient interactions, relating gendered embodiment to regulatory systems of authority, and illuminating policy implications for clinical practice and legal classifications of sex and gender.

This project focuses on persistent gaps in philosophies of the body: the enduring mind-body divide in accounts of phenomenology, the unfulfilled promises of representing and inhabiting the body in online and virtual spaces, and the difference between health as quantified in medical discourse versus health as lived experience. These tensions are brought to light through the electronic food journal genre where the difficulty in capturing pre-noetic, outside-consciousness aspects of experience and embodied health are thrown into relief against circulating cultural discourses surrounding health, body size, self-surveillance, and self-care. The electronic food journal genre serves as a space for users to situate themselves and their daily practices in relation to medicalization, public policy, and the conflation of health and body size. These journals form artifacts reflecting life writing practices in digital spaces that model compliant self-surveillance as well as transgressive self-care. The journals instantiate the mind-body-technology interactivity of extended cognition, but also point toward a rupture in the feedback loops that promise to integrate pre-noetic aspects of being and experience. By exploring the tensions inherent in these online food journaling spaces, this project concludes by offering a PEERS heuristic/heuretic for assessing theories and technologies of embodiment and health for their ability to access what resides in the “remainder” of current embodiment philosophy and to identify the aspects of lived experience left unattended in USDA health policy, food journaling interfaces, and embodiment philosophy. The PEERS model can be used to evaluate existing technologies for their capacity to map true mind-body-technology interactivity and to build new theory that accounts for a fuller, more nuanced approach to understanding embodied reality and embodied health.

The present work investigates, based on the foucautian notion of the constitution of the subjectivity, the practitioners of extreme body marking such as tattooing, piercing, scarification, branding, cutting, suspension, among others. All these practices concern the greater movement of Body Modification. Each society produces different standards for what the ideal body should be according to the patterns of beauty and the dominant values of each particular time. Considering that the body constructed by the practitioners of Body Modification is divergent to western culture standards, this study tries to show how this perspective influences not only those who use it but also how its presence in our society has important consequences. To do so the study began with an exposition of Foucault´s notion of power and how power relations invest the bodies producing different forms of subjectivity. A historic approach on body marking also made it possible to understand in which context the Body Modification Movement and its specificities appeared. The narrative of the individuals who submit to these practices was also taken in consideration, and the main aspects of how they think their experience is presented in this work. Agreeing with Foucault´s premise that subjectivity has its roots on the body, the Body Movement is valued by the author as a new form of subjectivity which can offer an alternative for resistance in face of the coercive mechanisms of power of our contemporaneity.

With this dissertation, I aim to problematize how are produced the femininities of the bodies from the techniques of body modification in two areas in which teaching is directly acting: on the street and in cyberspace www.suicidegirls.com. I believe that the body modification as the use of techniques that make the people acquire characteristics in their bodies that resemble in some of their biological constitution, from the application of tattoos, piercings, scarification, brandings ... To put this work, I consider science as one that is understood in the discourse of those who produce it, in other words, the wills for truth of the subject and not the hegemonic, which presents the correct answer, the only legitimate, which was based on mathematical discoveries in the middle of the sixteenth century. The science here is based on the production of other knowledge, other values in society, creating other rules, from other knowledge. These, to produce knowledge, has educated and pedagogizing bodies, in other words, it produces the subject and sets their modes of being and acting in society. From this perspective, think about the production of femininities, from the use of techniques of body modification is put under suspicion the “metanarrativas” that are built as true for women. To this end, the foundation to work from the perspective of Cultural Studies and Gender, specifically using the present poststructuralist, with reference to the analysis of Michel Foucault. Studies had ruled on this case consider both the bodies and genders of the people as a social and cultural construction, involved in power relations. To develop the research, I used research instruments and also mapping of discourse analysis, Foucauldian perspective. So with this study using two pedagogical spaces considered informal, where relationships happen, to analyze how femininities are produced on bodies with the use of techniques of body modification: Avenida Rio Grande, along with the Largo Dr. Pius in City of Rio Grande and the site Virtual www.suicidegirls.com. These spaces allowed me to understand the different ways that women, by using the techniques of body modification, conduct their femininity, is following the rules that are placed as truth or, conversely, creating other ways to produce them. In other words, I could see that the use of piercings, tattoos, dilators, scarification and many other techniques of body modification identified so far show that there are different ways to provide women in society. Some devotees of body modification, both those who move in certain streets of Rio Grande (RS) as those who are models in www.suicidegirls.com, advocate, in some cases, a break up, a resistance to the ways of producing femininities by constructing other forms of being a woman, following other approaches, other models for their bodies. However, some of the women present a speech that such techniques are ways to enhance the legitimacy femininity to them.

In view of a field research carried out by a team connected to the universe of body modification, it is possible to discern some uses and meanings linked to these forms of body interventions. Body modification or body change is part of the circuit of piercings and tattoos, although they are socially less thinned and more extreme, like scarifications, subcutaneous implants, bifurcated tongues, surfaces and body suspensions. The aim of this paper is to cast an anthropological glance on these practices, joining at the same context all the subjects involved with these techniques, placing them inside the same relational focus and capturing their journeys and trajectories. The discussions are concentrated on the notion of body building and urban life style. Ideas as personal distinctness and prestige imitation are also present in this universe, as well as matters attached to genre, pleasure, art, and to the so-called alternative circuit . This way, the ethnography so far presented here, reveals the complex and contemporaneous character of these practices of body markings in which the body appears as the central element in the experiences of the subjects of this study
This study explores processes of identity construction among women who have skin conditions and body modifications. Analyzing seven semi-structured qualitative interviews, the author examines how individuals affected by skin conditions employ body modification practices to organize their identities and promote feelings of agency across both personal and social domains. Engaging a Bakhtinian dialogic lens, the author argues that body modification may operate as a de-stigmatization strategy that supports individuals with skin conditions in cultivating a sense of self-determination and bodily sovereignty. Shaped by grounded theory, this study’s findings trace relationships between body modification and the development of agentic identities among women with skin conditions. Confronted by medical, physical, and social disenfranchisement, women affected by skin conditions may implement body modification practices to navigate treatment, incorporate their conditions, and negotiate their relationships. The author additionally suggests implications for the application of body modification practices as somatic therapeutic modalities.

Abstract: The aim of this work is to shed anthropological light onto the realm of body modification in the city of São Paulo. My proposal is to pull off an ethnographic study together with non-mainstream body modification professionals, undergoers and enthusiasts. In this practice the quest for strenuous pain is present, which makes it some interesting ground to be scoured with an anthropological approach concerned with seeing into the role of body, aesthetics and pain, never shrugging aside the association between sexual arousal and modified body. This essay is directed towards my attempt to interpret what I could feel and gather from the subjects in the field work from an anthropological point of view. The discussion in body techniques and medicalization in body modification is the starting point from which I discuss means to spawn a discourse capable of viewing the practice as a manner to state self-body projects, as opposed to the growing profissionalization and normalization in the field. Taking into account field work data on how the subjects view pain experience, I shall discuss the subversive potential of these body practices

Muscle contraction and relaxation are controlled by the intracellular free Ca²⁺ concentration. The sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) is an intracellular membrane system which regulates this internal free Ca²⁺ concentration. Responding to an electrical excitation of the cell surface membrane, the SR releases Ca²⁺ through a specific Ca²⁺ release channel, thus elevating the Ca²⁺ concentration inside muscle cell and causing the muscle to contract. Subsequent sequestration of Ca²⁺ by the SR Ca²⁺ pumps restores the resting state of the muscle cell. This research focuses on the Ca²⁺ release channel from skeletal muscle SR. The planar lipid bilayer technique was used to study the channel at the single channel level. The SR Ca²⁺ release channel was identified and isolated via its interaction with specific sulfhydryl oxidizing agents. This protein of a molecular mass of 106 kDa was then incorporated into a planar lipid bilayer membrane (BLM). In an asymmetrical Ca²⁺ solution, the channel protein demonstrates a single channel conductance of 107 ± 13 pS and a permeability ratio of Ca²⁺ versus Tris⁺ of 7.4 ± 3.3. In a symmetrical 250 mM NaCl solution, the channel protein displays a large single channel conductance of 400 ± 20 pS, and a weak voltage-dependence. The channel is activated by millimolar ATP and inhibited by micromolar ruthenium red. Nanomolar concentrations of ryanodine modify the channel by changing it from a rapidly gating full conductance state to a long-lived subconductance state. These results demonstrate that the isolated 106 kDa protein channel has properties similar to those observed following fusion of SR vesicles to a BLM. The bilayer system was also used to examine the effect of Ag⁺ on the SR Ca²⁺ release channel. Ag⁺ (0.2-1. 0 μM ) activates the SR Ca²⁺ release channel. Activation by Ag⁺ does not require the presence of Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, or ATP. Ag⁺ activates the channel by increasing the open probability Po. Ag⁺ activation is always followed by a spontaneous inactivation. The channel is still sensitive to ruthenium red inhibition after exposure to Ag⁺. Isolated SR vesicles were fused to a BLM to study the effect of the photooxidizing dye, rose bengal, on the gating characteristics of the reconstituted SR Ca²⁺ release channel. Rose bengal activates the Ca²⁺ release channel in the presence of light by increasing the channel open probability and leaving the single channel conductance unchanged. This photoactivation is independent of the myoplasmic Ca²⁺ concentration, and can be achieved from either side of the membrane. In addition, the effect is inhibited by addition of 10-20 μM ruthenium red. When modified to its subconducting state by ryanodine, subsequent addition of rose Bengal reactivates the channel to a rapidly fluctuating full conducting state. These studies carried out at the single channel level utilizing the planar lipid bilayer technique have not only enhanced our understanding of the Ca²⁺ release mechanism of skeletal muscle SR, but also provided information about the toxic effects on biological membrane systems caused by heavy metals and oxidizing agents.

Skeletal muscle contains an internal membrane system called the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) whose function is to regulate the Ca2+ concentration of the myoplasm. Ca2+ is transported into the SR from the myoplasm via a Ca2+ dependent ATPase thus lowering the myoplasmic Ca2+ concentration. Ca2+ exits from the SR via a Ca2+ releqse pathway resultingin the increase of myoplasmic Ca2+. Muscles contract when the myoplasmic Ca2+ concentration is > 5 uM and relax when the Ca2+ concentration is lowered below 1 uM. The Ca2+ dependent ATPase has been extensively studied but the Ca2+ release system is less well understood. SR vesicles release their internal Ca2+ when a reactive thiol group is oxidized (oxidation-induced Ca2+ release). It is shown in this dissertation that oxidation-induced Ca2+ release is stimulated by adenine nucleotides with an order of effectiveness of: ATP > AMP-PCP > cAMP > AMP > adenine. The stimulatory effect is not dependent upon phosphorylation of a protein because AMP-PCP, a nonhydrolyzable analogue of ATP, is almost as effective as ATP in stimulating oxidation-induced Ca2+ release. It is also shown in this dissertation that photooxidation of histidyl residues results in an increase Ca2+ permeability of the SR. Unlike oxidation-induced Ca2+ release, photooxidation-induced Ca2+ release is Mg2+ independent, not inhibited by ruthenium red and inhibited by adenine nucleotides. Covalent modification of histidyl residues with ethoxyformic anhydride results in the increased permeability of SR vesicles. Similar to photooxidation-induced Ca2+ efflux, EFA-induced Ca2+ efflux is Mg2+ independent and is inhibited by ATP. The AMP-PCP protection of SR proteins from modification with EFA is similar to non-competitive inhibition with a KI = 50 uM. The photooxidation effect is not on membrane lipids but on a protein component which may be an ion transport system, other than the Ca2+ release protein, altered in such a way that it now transports Ca2+.

This thesis examines the psychosocial and cultural factors behind body modification practices of breast augmentation, female circumcision, and foot binding in order to understand the growing trend of cosmetic surgery. Body modification is examined through the lens of Albert Bandura’s social learning theory using hermeneutic methodology that analyzes quantitative and qualitative data. Cross-cultural research on breast augmentation, female circumcision, and foot binding provides insight into how body modification practices are internalized through observational learning. The findings demonstrate that women are faced with social pressures to conform to physical ideals that often require modification of the body. Bandura’s theory of self-efficacy provides insights into how women can exercise choice, personal agency, and self-direction to guide personal decisions pertaining to cosmetic surgery within the context of social pressures.

The relations with the body have suffered diverse influences during the western history, these were responsible for the creation of patterns and models to be followed; based on the concept of disciplines and disciplinary structures proposed by Foucault. In modernity, new subjections are responsible for changes in these relations, but instead of freeing the bodies of the various proposed patterns, they seem to create new patterns to be followed. Thereon, the body modification also gains new contours. From the understanding of these influences that affect the body within an economic system based on positivity, focused on the optimization of productivity and the weight of this regime on the individual, will be proposed some new disciplines that influence bodies in modernity. Emphasizing certain Internet subcultures and some notable aesthetic models in the network and conventional media, an analysis of popular aesthetics was developed on some Internet platforms based on one of the most common body modifications, tattoo. In these subcultures is possible to observe a popularization of the ink aesthetics, currently present also in conventional media. Thus, the selection of a corpus of analysis was indicated: four profiles with curators were selected - which present photos of individuals with tattoos - to create a visual database that can generate a debate and point out some notable tendencies of behavior and positioning network. The proposal is to develop a visual taxonomy of the aesthetics sought by tattooed individuals. Projecting the profile on the networks, becoming a celebrity, gaining visibility, showing a happy, full, successful life are goals sought by a population that is increasingly trapped in a world full of frustrations hidden in the mask made possible by social networks. This spectacle is part of the modern capitalist positivity. There is a tendency towards a hyperestethening of the world, a search for a perfect hyper-reality, for a happy, successful, lean life that seems to project a virtual hyper-reality, which, in turn, seeks to hide a feeling of frustration generalized. These modern hyper-realistic simulations published in network and the positivity of the capitalist system are like a social dystopia.

Calcium ions are important mediators in the mechanism of contraction and relaxation of muscle fibers. Depolarization of sarcolemma and transverse tubule causes an increase of myoplasmic ca2+ concentration which induces contraction of the myofibrils. In skeletal muscle fibers, the intracellular Ca2+ concentraton is regulated by an extensive membrane system, the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR). Ca2+-release from SR is initiated by depolarization of the transverse tubule via a process referred to as excitation-contraction coupling. The Ca2+ - release channel located in the junctional SR plays an important role in this mechanism.

This thesis is an exploration of a particular cultural preference, "body modification" (i.e. the 'atypical' practices of tattoo, piercing, scarification, suspension and related practices), in the United Kingdom and United States. In the short span of about thirty years these practices have crept from the margins toward the mainstream and have lost a degree of their deviant status in the process. In spite of the geographic differences between body modifiers, meanings and motivations are remarkably similar across a number of themes. Yet the root of these similarities and growth in practice stems mainly from the actions of body modifiers themselves rather than swooping external, global market forces that would appropriate body modifiers' culture. Using Bourdieu's concept of the "field" as an orienting tool to explore culture, this thesis draws upon life history interviews with people who conduct body modifications, historical record, law and legal debates, questionnaire data, an abbreviated ethnography and letters between founding members of the field. It looks at how body modification emerges, grows, and maintains continuity of cultural content and changes through interactions between internal and external institutions, producers and consumers. The intertwined processes of legitimation, identification and professionalization play a crucial role in structurating the field to allow for growth and popularity. As a set of cultural practices that emerged from the margins of cultural preferences, the body modification field was shaped and continues to be shaped by the hostile environment from which it emerged, even though public reception to body modification is no longer quite as antagonistic as it once was. Emerging at a time when body modification was truly deviant from the norm, early body modifiers created strong frameworks of meaning and underlying values that were aimed at normalizing practices to a wider public, being inclusive to gain members and also embraced a wide variety of body modification practices. When the field began to grow and some body modifiers had formally organized, elite members forcefully attempted to draw practice away from the more 'extreme' end of body modification. This resulted in opposing efforts to reassert core field values, but as the numbers of both consumers and producers continued to grow the field was riddled with competition and boundary struggles. Gaining a modicum of legitimacy within the wider scope of cultural preferences and gaining new members caused tension over status hierarchies and the growth of more 'extreme' practices.

Millennials in retail account for a large portion of the U.S. workforce and have the highest number of body image modifications from tattoos, piercings, and/or gauges. Following Moustakas concept of perception, the purpose of this transcendental phenomenology study was to explore how Millennial-aged retail employees describe and experience leaders with body image modifications from tattoos, piercings, and/or gauges. Participants were sought from various retail locations and were required to be born between 1981 and 1996. Data were collected through interviews with 6 participants and the data were analyzed using Moustakas modification of the Van Kamm Method. The results showed that employees typically felt good about their experiences with their leaders, yet varied on how effective and personable their leaders were; however, employees did not ascribe any impact on leadership effectiveness to the body image modifications of their leaders. Implications of this result extends to an increased openness towards traits that make others different, theoretical changes that note visual cues are important for ideal leader categorization, and increased understanding of follower views in relation to leader-follower relationship development.

In order to contribute to the expansion of a sociological comprehension related to body and its identity, this research intents to understand how the inked person attributes meaning to his tattoo, to construct his identity. We recognize the increasing popularization of the tattoo and the existence of a correlation between tattoos and identity; also we consider that the tattoo, as a body modification, is a distinction and identification mark. Having those assumptions established, we propose in this research an understanding of the dimensions the tattoo has negotiated in a identity construction to the inked person. Those are our purposes: to understand how the tattoos meaning is built and the importance these signs hold in the selfimage construction to the inked person; to analyze how positions of subject, location and price influence in the process of choosing the images and the parts of the body in which the tattoo will be inked; finally, to establish the differences between “commercial” and “artistic” tattoos, both from the tattoo artist and the inked person point of view. These purposes will be achieved through a bibliographic, a participant observation in three different tattoo studios with different profiles and, finally, semi structured interviews with the tattooed persons.

Annotation:
Isotopic and spectrophotometric assays show that micromolar concentrations of heavy metal ions (particularly Ag⁺ and Hg²⁺) stimulate ATPase activity but inhibit Ca²⁺ uptake in isolated SR vesicles. Both effects are caused by increased Ca²⁺ permeability of the membrane, apparently the result of activation of the Ca²⁺ release system of the vesicles due to heavy metal binding to a critical sulfhydryl group associated with the Ca²⁺ release channels. CU²⁺catalyzed co-oxidation of this sulfhydryl with exogenous cysteine to form a mixed disulfide also results in activation of the Ca²⁺ release system. The rate and extent of Cu²⁺/cysteine-induced release is maximal at physiological pH and is inhibited by local anaesthetics and Mg²⁺, suggesting that the redox state of this sulfhydryl may play a role in activation of the Ca²⁺ release system of intact muscle. Modification of the SR with the proteolytic enzyme trypsin also increases the Ca²⁺ permeability of the SR, and enhances the rate of Ca²⁺ release activated by cAMP, doxorubicin, Hg²⁺, and Cu²⁺/cysteine. The rates of release activated by all reagents are stimulated by a factor of five after five minutes exposure to trypsin. Hg²⁺- and Cu²⁺/cysteine-activated release are not stimulated further, while cAMP- and doxorubicin-activated release continue to increase up to maximum of 20-fold stimulation after 15 minutes exposure to trypsin. Inhibitors of the Ca²⁺ release system such as Mg²⁺ and ruthenium red still inhibit release from proteolytically modified SR, and the binding affinities of activators and inhibitors to their sites are not significantly altered by proteolysis; only the rates of Ca²⁺ transport are affected. The most probable mechanisms of tryptic stimulation of Ca²⁺ release are (1) removal of a regulatory protein or subunit of the Ca²⁺ release system, making more channels available for transport; (2) increasing the single channel unitary conductance; (3) increasing the open time of activated channels. The biphasic character of proteolytic stimulation of cAMP- and doxorubicin-activated release (as opposed to monophasic stimulation of Hg²⁺- and Cu²⁺/cysteine-activated release} suggests that more than one of the above parameters are involved in tryptic stimulation of the Ca²⁺ release system.

Annotation:
Although immensely popular with American boys upon his debut in 1938, Superman has gradually lost relevance with the postmodern generation. DC Comics has rewritten the character numerous times in an attempt to regain lost popularity, but the problem lies in an aspect of his character they refuse to alter – his invulnerability. Superman’s invulnerable body was engineered to quell the fears America harbored towards technological progress, but his impervious physique now renders him obsolete. Boys in postmodern America, under the influence of post-Enlightenment body values, now connect with vulnerable comic book heroes whose bodies more closely match their own. This paper examines the sociological reasons for the shift in Superman’s popularity by comparing the body values of 1938 with those of today, and concludes that while Superman might have succeeded as a modern hero, he fails as a postmodern one.

Annotation:
The last twenty years have been witness to two, ostensibly unrelated, phenomenon: the increase, on the one hand, of body modification practices, like tattooing, piercing plastic surgery and gender reassignment surgery, and on the other, the rise of `quality' television series. This work investigates whether the interest in body modification is reflected in television series, how body modification practices are represented in these texts and the possible connections between the skin and the screen. For this purpose the seven seasons of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and the relevant episodes of the series Angel, Six Feet Under, Nip/Tuck and The L Word, have been analysed. Psychoanalysis is employed both as a tool to explicate the dynamics behind the contemporary urge to modify bodies and as a method of textual analysis of the said series. Lacan's theory of `the mirror stage' and Anzieu's theory of `the skin-ego' are the basis of this approach, although Kleinian object relation theories and Freud's theories on the death drive, fetishism and perversion, have also been used when necessary. Since, the gendered body is of utmost importance to this investigation, feminist film theories and queer theory has also played a significant part. The investigation shows that television series represent the psychic dynamics behind body modification in all their complexity. Whenever body modification becomes a theme in the narrative or is underlined as a visual motive in the narration, problems of the split-ego and the gendered body, come to the forefront.

Annotation:
This hermeneutic phenomenological inquiry describes the lived experiences of three visibly tattooed teachers and what it is like to sense their tattooed flesh while they are at school. Lived experience descriptions were collected during in-depth interviews and from personal reflective writings conducted by the study author, who is also a tattooed teacher. Using hermeneutic research approaches outlined by Max van Manen and Linda Finlay, lifeworld descriptions of visibly tattooed teachers are presented in the form of anecdotal passages that urge readers to ‘step into tattooed skin’. Drawing from Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s phenomenology of perception, Luce Irigaray’s work on intersubjectivity, Michel Foucault’s notion of the disciplinary gaze, theories of the look in education forwarded by Madeline Grumet, and Judith Butler’s notion of subversive bodies, meanings are made of tattooed teachers’ experiences of adopting uncomfortable teacher identities and then growing comfortable in their professional roles. Through hermeneutic analysis, five main themes are presented, constituting the “essences” of the phenomemon of living as a visibly tattooed teacher: Trying to Fit; Mis-fit; Fit. You? Fit You!; Fitting In; and One Size Does Not Fit All.

Annotation:
Advances in cybernetic and nanotechnological body modifications currently allow for enhancements to human physical and mental function which exceed human species-based norms. This thesis examines body modification and human enhancement from two perspectives—Roman Catholicism and Transhumanism— in order to contribute to bioethical deliberations regarding enhancement technologies. Roman Catholicism has a longstanding tradition of bioethical discourse, informing the healthcare directives of Roman Catholic institutions. Transhumanism is more recent movement that endorses body modifications and human enhancements as a means of individual betterment and social evolution. The thesis first considers definitions of human enhancement and levels of normalcy in connection to cybernetic and nanotechnological bionic implants, and outlines a series of criteria to assess a technology’s potential bioethical acceptability: implantability, permanency, power, and public interaction. The thesis then describes Roman Catholicism’s response to non-enhancing decorative body modifications (cosmetic surgeries, common decorative modifications such as tattoos and piercings, and uncommon modifications such as scarifications and brandings) in order to establish a basis for possible Roman Catholic responses to enhancing cybernetic and nanotechnological modifications. This is followed by an analysis from a Roman Catholic perspective of the major social issues brought forward by enhancement technologies: commodification, eugenics, vulnerability, and distributive justice. Turning to Transhumanism, the thesis describes the origins and philosophy of the movement, and then discusses the bioethical principles it advances with regard to human enhancement. The thesis concludes by locating points of convergence between Transhumanism and Roman Catholicism that could be the basis of more widely accepted ethical guidelines regarding modification technologies.

This essay examines the discourses that can be formulated around how tattooed people talk about themselves and about tattoo as a practice. This is based on a discourse analysis study of interviews made in Scandinavian Tattoo Magazine. The essays theoretical and methodological framework is built around Marianne Winther Jørgensens and Louise Phillips framework discourse theory, which itself is based mainly in Ernesto Laclaus and Chantal Mouffes discourse analysis concepts. They formulated discourses; the sexuality discourse, the ironic discourse, the discourse of opportunities, the discourse of individuality and the masculinity discourse, has been discussed using concepts taken from Mary Douglas (purity and danger), Slavoj Žižek (cynicism), Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann (reciprocal typification and face-to-face situations). The essays analysis showed that women are not only preferred as representatives of tattooing in the specific interviews in the magazine, but also that they, as opposed to the men, are heavily sexualized. Theories regarding how relevant discourses surrounding tattoos have developed, based on how the respondents identify with the practice, are also presented, and conclusions were also drawn around the individualizing aspects of tattooing, where the analysis suggests that the boundaries of tattooing, for example in design and choice of location, will be continuously stretched further in the future.

This dissertation has multiple goals. First to analyze self-destructive behavior and its relations to ethics. Secondly to evaluate four different ethical perspectives regarding self-destructiveness from a certain position of human nature. The third goal is to construct a position that deals with self-destructive behavior in a way that is improved and well-managed compared to the four ethical perspectives analyzed earlier. The first goal is met by comparing and evaluating different theories concerning self-destructive behavior and discussing the ethical implications surrounding them. Self-destructive behavior is seen as a way of communicating, which puts a moral pressure on both the self-destructive person and the society around her. The four ethical perspectives represented by Robert Nozick and Thomas Szasz, two neoliberals, James B Nelson, a body theologian inspired by Paul Tillich, Gail Weiss, a body feminist and Mary Timothy Prokes, a catholic body theologian, are hence met by the problem of self-destruct, analyzed and critically evaluated. In the final chapter the author constructs an improved ethical perspective concerned with self-destructiveness, based on altruism, responsibility and broad-mindedness.

In modern scientific discourse there is the consideration of the person‟s body and the postulate that it is simply the support of the person, an object which is available and which is necessary to work on in order to achieve improvement. Also, it is seen as the raw material in which an individual person‟s identity is both lessened and simultaneously mastered. From reading the reports of female readers of the magazine Boa Forma from the year 2009, this present research aims to investigate the meanings and values of the body and to advance an understanding of the practices of reflective body modification in order to understand their roles in the search for a body plan. The modern form makes possible a body design that consists of shaping it to build and/or reconstruct its individual identity. From this perspective, the body is not a place for criticism, but rather it becomes a new possibility of the manifestation of the self, a new form of the subject to be presented to the world, and therefore is worth all of the investment. The body becomes the means of a person‟s salvation and also of his/her lifestyle. From being a priori the absolute identity of the individual, it was broken up, accompanying the reformation of the subject. As a sign of the messianic promise: the ugly will become beautiful and old will become young, people will realize that, even more than an investment in the covering of the body as an end in itself, the important question for the body is the constant search to define the interior from the exterior.

The journal includes notes from research during my time at the University of Iowa in New Media Studies, Sociology and Performance Studies. I explore how, for instance, the Narcissus myth attempts to influence my world through the liminality of instant gratification, technology, and the fragmentation of identity. The journal also accounts for the conceptual, personal, and practical considerations for the development of Mirror, Mirror Perfected since 2012.
