The contributions of Sir George Grey to disciplines as varied as botany, biology, ethnography and linguistics have contributed to his reputation as a humane, liberal-minded imperial functionary. In this context, it is relevant to bring up the contributions which Grey made to anthropology in the shape of the skulls, skeletons and mummified bodies of indigenous peoples that he sent back to scientists in Britain for analysis and display. This article considers what Grey did and why—as far as it is possible to ascertain—he did it. It also suggests that class as well as racial considerations inform

All students in the study completed a causal map at the beginning and end of the course. Casual maps are similar to concept maps but demonstrate cause and effect relationships rath

Abstract This paper draws on archival research to trace the techniques used by scientists and government officials involved with palm oil at the turn of the twentieth century. For them, mundane practices of “carefulness” were paramount as they worked on collecting, identifying, marketing, and improving the oil palm. But they also applied this so-called care to people: care of the oil palm was thought to presuppose care of the “native,” providing a correction for what were seen as “careless” local manners of cultivation. Colonial techniques of care thus sought to encompass both plants and peopl

This chapter investigates the emergence, in the form of an enlightened plant, of utopian theories of vegetal sociability in the eighteenth century, at a time that witnesses the proliferation of schemes for botanical classification and physiological inquiries into plant life. These theories both herald and resist the development of classificatory systems and a biopolitics modeled on vegetal life. Authors Ludvig Holberg (1684–1754) and Tiphaigne de la Roche (1722–1774) create new narratives of liberal and rationally-governed societies by peopling them with plants. Yet these utopian visions are n

Gardening and botany emerged as independent and stimulating pursuits permitted, and even encouraged, for women, in the nineteenth century. Drawing on the cultural history of these pursuits, this paper examines how Charlotte Brontë uses gardens as critical sites in the Bildungsromans of Jane Eyre and Lucy Snowe. I argue that corresponding to this culture, and given the restricted locations in which the traditional female Bildungsroman may play out, Brontë’s gardens function as sites of liberation and self-discovery and are a fundamental part of the heroines’ journey into adulthood. This book’s seed was planted in 2006 in South Haven, Michigan, at the Liberty Hyde Bailey Museum, at one of its first weekly series of programs, which we called Brown Bag Botany. These were free summer lunch presentations, given on warm, halcyon days behind the white clapboard homestead of Bailey’s parents, just about a mile from Lake Michigan. They took place underneath a grand, mature black walnut tree planted when the surrounding land was still the old Bailey farm. Never lacking for content, Bailey’s instructional books in the museum library were an easy means to create easy programs. This

This chapter examines the intellectual paradigms and rationales that influenced Joseph Banks in his thinking and actions. It explains his disinterest with architectural and landscape fashions and his dislike of a grandiose neoclassical pile on grounds laid out by the architect Capability Brown. It also analyses Banks as an empiricist for his adaption of the Baconian method of investigative science that forms the basis of the scientific method as a means of observation and induction. The chapter explores Banks' beliefs on the outcomes of science that should be applied knowledge and that theoret
