Resumen: El presente trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar la presencia de la voz femenina en el corpus de la lírica popular catalana de la Edad Media. Con tal propósito, y tras presentar los resultados de las líneas de investigación principales en el área románica, se estudiará el Corpus d’antiga poesia popular de Josep Romeu i Figueras y serán comentadas las características temáticas y formales de este conjunto formado por veinticuatro poemas. Por último, se propone la inclusión de tres piezas adicionales, de origen diverso, que nos permitirán reflexionar sobre cuestiones relacionadas con sus tipologías textuales, culturales y lingüísticas.Palabras clave: Lírica catalana de la Edad Media, Poesía tradicional europea, La mujer en la literatura catalana medieval, Estudios de género, Josep Romeu i Figueras.Abstract: The goal of this essay is the analysis of female voices in Catalan traditional poetry from the Middle Ages. After introducing the main achievements of previous research in Romance literatures, we will study Josep Romeu i Figueras’ Corpus d’antiga poesia popular as well as the formal and thematic traits of the extant group of 24 poems. Last, the article suggests to include 3 more texts, whose presence will offer the opportunity to think about some issues related to textual, cultural and linguistic typologies.Keywords: Medieval Catalan Poetry, European Traditional Poetry, Women in Medieval Catalan Literature, Genre Studies, Josep Romeu i Figueras.

Summary: Joan Maragall was the main reference of the two great models of Catalan poetry that followed him, Josep Carner and Carles Riba, who insisted on the expression «postmaragallian poets» to refer to modern Catalan poets. This is because Maragalltackled with full awareness for the first time in Catalan language all the issues that characterized modern Western poetry. This article systematizes these issues and shows how Maragall addressed and resolved them. It then analyzes how this promoted him themain reference of Carner and Riba in a double direction: they took up all the problems he established, but they contradicted all the solutions he proposed. As a conclusion, the answers given by Carner and Riba to the poetic questions raised by Maragall are systematized, thus showing the opposition between their poetics.Keywords: modern poetry, Catalan poetry, Joan Maragall, Josep Carner, Carles Riba.

Abstract The purpose of this study is to discuss the originality of the Catalan literature at its beginnings in relation to the poetry of the Occitan troubadours, and to explain why some Catalans today do not feel connected to the Castilian heritage. The paper presents the Occitan-Catalan political and cultural relations in the time between 993 and 1213, with particular emphasis on the 12th century when the Great Occitan War took place. The historical Occitania at that time was divided into numerous principalities affected by constant internal struggles. That unstable political situation encouraged powerful neighbours – as the rulers from the House of Barcelona – to attain their domination over the region. The successful military and diplomatic engagements of the Catalan sovereigns allowed them to create a relatively homogeneoas Occitan-Catalan community based on cultural similarity and feudal dependence.

Abstract: This article offers an initial analysis of the manuscript tradition of a set of thirteenth-century troubadour compositions that can be linked to the Catalan nobility, specifically the noble houses of Urgell, Cabrera, and Foix. It is part of a broader project aimed at shedding light on the role of the nobility in the production and dissemination of troubadour poetry within the Crown of Aragon. The data obtained allows for a re-evaluation of certain aspects of the manuscript transmission within Catalan noble circles and lays the groundwork for future research on the diffusion of troubadour poetry connected with Catalan-Aragonese courts.

Cette thèse a pour objet la recension, la description et l'analyse de la poésie visuelle de Joan Brossa (1919-1998), considéré comme l'un des grands représentants de la poésie expérimentale de la deuxième moitié du XXe siècle. Combinant les techniques des arts plastiques et de la littérature, ce corpus constitue une forme d’expression spécifique, difficile à définir et à circonscrire, mais qui occupe une place centrale dans l’œuvre du poète. La poésie visuelle s’inscrit dans l'évolution de la poésie d'avant-garde, du début du XXe siècle à l'art contemporain. C’est en retraçant cette histoire que nous pourrons justifier la méthode et les critères retenus pour établir le catalogue qui comprend plus d'un millier d'œuvres. Nous serons alors en mesure de proposer une définition du poème visuel, qu’il se présente de manière isolée, ou dans les recueils pour lesquels Brossa les a conçus à l'origine.Etant dépourvu de texte, le poème visuel peut-il s’expliquer par son contexte ? Rien n’est moins sûr, car ici le contexte est un matériau prélevé directement sur le « réel sociologique », pour parler avec les Nouveaux Réalistes parisiens, dont les préoccupations sont très proches de celles du poète catalan. L’examen de son œuvre visuelle permet ainsi d’éclairer sa poétique dans son ensemble. Pour Brossa, la poésie n'est pas ou n’est plus exclusivement littéraire. Son objectif principal, tant comme écrivain que comme plasticien, est d'observer la réalité avec la réalité, de l'avoir entre les mains, et de la présenter sur le papier d'une manière non pas neutre, mais retenue, afin de donner au regardeur le loisir d'entrer en scène : la page est un cadre qui ne fournit nul cadrage
This PhD dissertation is dedicated to the review, the description and the analysis of the visual poetry of Joan Brossa (1919-1998), who is considered one of the most representative figures of the experimental poetry movement of the second half of the 20th century. This corpus combining fine arts and literature techniques is a unique form of expression which is hard to define and circumscribe, but which is central to the work of the poet. Visual poetry is an integral part of the evolution of avant-garde poetry, from the early 20th century to contemporary art. Tracing this history allows us to justify the method and the criteria chosen to establish the catalogue of over a thousand works. This leads us to offering a definition of the visual poem, whether presented in isolation or within the collections of poems Brossa originally created them for. Deprived of a text, can the visual poem be explained through its context? Nothing is less certain because in this case the context is some material directly removed from the “sociological real”, to refer to the New Realists in Paris whose concerns were very similar to the Catalan poet’s. Examining his visual works therefore sheds light on his poetry as a whole. According to Brossa, poetry is not, or no longer is, exclusively literary. His main objective, as a writer and as an artist, is to observe reality with reality, to hold it in his hands and to present it on paper in a way that is not neutral but controlled in order to allow the beholder to enter the scene: the page is a frame with no framing

This doctoral thesis studies the recreation of spoken language in Robert Frost’s poetry and the translation of Frost’s poetry that has been carried out by Agustí Bartra and Miquel Declot into Catalan, and by Giovanni Giudici into Italian. The study starts by describing the meaning of the term mimesis of orality and its main features. It stresses the complexity of the phenomenon, which can be explained better only if a more eclectic theoretical and methodological approach is adopted that focuses on both the linguistic features of mimesis of orality and their potential effect on readers. Frost’s poetic language is well-known for its spoken quality. In this research I define the main traits of the poet’s language and then study how his evocation of orality has been interpreted by the poet-translators Bartra, Desclot and Giudici and how it has been interwoven with their own poetic style. The translations share common traits that can be traced back to the stylistic patterns of Frost’s original poetry. However, they also present divergent stylistic solutions that can be ascribed to each translator. By contextualizing these personal translation choices a better understanding is achieved of the causes that have motivated them, which ultimately brings the research to explore issues related to the translators’ ideology and cultural commitment.
Aquesta tesi doctoral estudia la recreació de la llengua parlada en la poesia de Robert Frost i la traducció de la poesia de Frost duta a terme per Agustí Bartra i Miquel Desclot al català, i per Giovanni Giudici a l’italià. L’estudi descriu el significat del terme mimesi de l’oralitat i les seves principals característiques. Posa l’accent en la complexitat del fenomen, que es pot explicar millor si s’adopta un enfocament teòric i metodològic més eclèctic, que se centra tant en els aspectes lingüístics de la mimesi de l’oralitat com en els possibles efectes en els lectors. El llenguatge poètic de Frost és ben conegut per la seva qualitat parlada. En aquesta recerca defineixo en primer lloc els trets principals de la llengua del poeta i estudio de quina forma la seva evocació de l'oralitat ha estat interpretada pels poetes i traductors Bartra, Desclot i Giudici i de quina manera s'ha entrellaçat amb l’estil poètic propi dels traductors. Les traduccions comparteixen trets comuns que es remunten als patrons estilístics de la poesia original de Frost. No obstant això, també presenten solucions estilístiques divergents que poden ser atribuïdes a cada traductor. Mitjançant la contextualització d’aquestes opcions personals de traducció és possible aconseguir una millor comprensió de les causes que les han motivades. Això porta la investigació a examinar qüestions relacionades amb la ideologia dels traductors i el seu compromís cultural.

This thesis provides a review of the female works from the 16th-18th centuries in the Catalan linguistic area, focusing especially in the poetic genre. The invisibility of women in literary or historical manuals, with the exception of a few brightest figures, led to the belief that were no women writers in the modern age in this area. This work is divided into two volumes and consists of four parts: the first part provides a pertinent study of the writers and of the genera cultivated in its diachronic evolution. To do so, it analyses the access of women to the written culture over the centuries of the period, taking into account the social conception of female gender prevailing at the time that limited the activities of women in private areas. At the same time, it establishes a first characterization of the phenomenon of women's writing in the Catalan literary universe, with an examination of known and documented authors. The second part of the thesis focuses on the examination of female exhumed poetic texts (regardless of the language used: Latin, the language of high culture; Catalan, the vernacular language of people, and Spanish, the language of monarchy, which most of the writers of the period employ). In this part, the thesis deepens on the main spaces that broadcast women's poetic work during these centuries, which have never been seriously addressed by the critics, and which in general have been classified according to the two areas of enunciation of the text: on the one hand, the profane spaces, where the poetry that what was submitted to contests and academies is located, the laudatory poerty contained in other works and some little-known pieces of secular poets; and, on the other hand, the sacred spaces, from which the monastic poetry comes, which is the most abundant and often responds to the convent dynamics and the expression of devotion of the nuns. After having studied the most important media of poetic projection for women of the modern age, which are summarized in the conclusions (on the third part), the fourth part of the thesis offers the full edition of the texts collected and studied in the Catalan-speaking territories
Aquesta tesi ofereix una revisió de les manifestacions literàries femenines dels segles XVI-XVIII a l’àmbit lingüístic català, centrada especialment en el gènere poètic. La invisibilitat de les dones als manuals històrics o literaris, amb l’excepció d’algunes poques figures més brillants, havien portat a la creença de la inexistència de dones escriptores a l’Edat Moderna en aquest territori. El treball, dividit en dos volums, consta de quatre parts: en la primera part s’ofereix un estudi pertinent de les escriptores i dels gèneres conreats, en la seva evolució diacrònica. Per fer-ho, s’analitza l’accés de les dones a la cultura escrita al llarg dels segles del període, tenint en compte la concepció social del gènere femení imperant a l’època que limitava les actuacions de les dones als espais privats. Paral·lelament, s’estableix una primera caracterització del fenomen de l’escriptura femenina a l’univers literari català, amb un examen de les autores conegudes i documentades. La segona part de la tesi està centrada en l’examen dels textos poètics femenins exhumats, independentment de la llengua emprada: el llatí, la llengua d’alta cultura; el català, la llengua vernacla del poble i, el castellà, la llengua de la monarquia, en què escriuen la majoria de les escriptores del període. En aquest apartat, s’aprofundeix sobre els principals espais de difusió poètica femenina durant aquests segles, mai abordats seriosament per la crítica, i que, en línies generals classifiquem segons els dos espais d’enunciació dels textos: d’una banda, els espais profans, en els quals s’emmarca la poesia presentada als certàmens i acadèmies, la poesia laudatòria inclosa en els preliminars d’altres obres i algunes peces de poetes seglars poc conegudes; i, d’altra banda, els espais religiosos, dels quals prové la poesia monàstica, la més abundant, que sovint respon a les dinàmiques conventuals i a l’expressió de la devoció de les religioses. L’objectiu general d’aquesta tesi és contribuir a omplir el buit bibliogràfic que existeix al voltant de la religiositat de Màrius Torres (1910-1942). La primera part està dedicada als seus antecedents religiosos. Es reconstrueix la història de l’espiritisme modern, s’analitzen les publicacions dels primers espiritistes lleidatans i s’estudia la trajectòria i l’obra escrita de Marià Torres i Humbert Torres; l’avi patern i el pare del poeta. La segona part de la tesi se centra en Màrius Torres. D’una banda, s’explora la finalitat de la poesia en la seva vida, i es proposa un itinerari per la seva obra poètica amb el propòsit de posar en relleu la seva dimensió estètica i religiosa. Per altra banda, s’aprofundeix en les principals actituds vitals de l’autor, especialment reveladores de la seva sensibilitat religiosa. Finalment, s’estudien les seves idees entorn diferents temes vinculats amb la religió, i es confronten amb les dels seus familiars.
The main goal of this thesis is to contribute to filling the bibliographical gap regarding the religiousness of Màrius Torres (1910-1942). The first part focuses on his religious antecedents. It features a reconstruction of the history of Modern Spiritism, analyses the published works of the first spiritists from Lleida, and examines the written work of Marià Torres and Humbert Torres, the poet's father, and grandfather. The second part of this thesis focuses on Màrius Torres himself. On the one hand, it looks into the purpose of poetry in his life, and it sets out an itinerary through his work to highlight its esthetic and religious dimension. On the other hand, it delves into the author's main vital attitudes, especially those that reveal his religious sensitivity. Lastly, there is an analysis of his ideas regarding different religious topics in opposition to those of his relatives.

Francesc Fontanella wrote seventy-seven love poems dedicated to Gileta, the pseudonym used for Maria Teresa Ham, and these are generally grouped together under the title giletes. They make up the part of the writer’s work that has had the widest reach in the manuscript tradition, and three of these important manuscripts even have their own cover. The research has three principal parts: firstly, the critical edition of the poems; in second place,the study, including the receipt (even the imitations), the literary sources, models and influences and the analysis of the meaning of the verses; and finally, the dissemination of the research. The fundamental aim of the thesis is to study the giletes in order to reclaim their prevailing place within the Catalan Modern literature.
Francesc Fontanella va escriure setanta-set composicions amoroses dedicades a Gileta, criptònim de Maria Teresa Ham, que s’han transmès generalment com un conjunt unitari sota el nom de giletes. Conformen un dels blocs de l’obra de l’escriptor que més s’ha difós en la tradició manuscrita, i fins i tot en tres dels manuscrits unitaris importants disposen d’una portada pròpia. La investigació té tres parts principals: primerament, l’edició crítica dels poemes; en segon lloc, l’estudi, que inclou la recepció dels textos (imitacions incloses), les fonts, models i influències literàries i l’anàlisi delsignificat dels versos; i finalment, la difusió de la recerca. L’objectiu principal de la tesi és l’estudi de les giletes per tal de reivindicar el lloc preponderant que els correspon dins de la literatura catalana moderna.

The PhD thesis analyses the representation of eroticism in the poetics works of Joan Salvat-Papasseit (1894-1924), Josep Palau i Fabre (1917-2008), and Gabriel Ferrater (1922-1972). Based on the results of this inquiry, there has been carried out a comparative study of the poetries of the three authors to establish similarities and discrepancies in the representation and treatment of the erotic themes. As the authors of poetic production is framed on three specific, short and different historical periods, the main objective of the thesis is to establish what has been the evolution of the presence, representation and treatment of eroticism along the twentieth century Catalan poetry.
La tesi doctoral analitza la representació de l’erotisme en les obres poètiques de Joan Salvat-Papasseit (1894-1924), Josep Palau i Fabre (1917-2008) i Gabriel Ferrater (1922-1972). A partir dels resultats obtinguts en aquesta anàlisi, s’ha realitzat un estudi comparatiu entre les obres poètiques dels tres autors per tal d’establir les concomitàncies i les discrepàncies en la representació i el tractament de la temàtica eròtica. Com que la producció poètica d’aquests autors es troba emmarcada en tres períodes històrics determinats, breus i distints, l’objectiu principal de la tesi doctoral és establir quina ha estat l’evolució de la presència, la representació i el tractament de l’erotisme al llarg de la poesia catalana del segle XX.

This thesis is a navigation in the multiplicity of João Cabral de Melo Neto´s life and work. The anchorage of the research is in the visibility of the poetic work with the approach of its meanings and mediations in the sea of History. It attempts to reflect how the ability of artistic praxis holds itself a political and historical dimension. The thesis presents the story of a man that when experiences the literature´s fascinations and challenges, adds them to the reflexion in his dialog with several societies and friends. We have an anthology of great moments of the author (either as a diplomat, critic, historian, printer and man of words). A true nautical letter on art, literaly creation, societies, politics and, of course, life. This thesis elapses the life of a man who records and "dwells time" and learns which is lived in poetic words
Esta tese é uma navegação no multiverso da vida e obra de João Cabral de Melo Neto, cujo ancoramento está na visibilidade do trabalho poético com a aproximação de seus significados e mediações no mar da história. Busca-se refletir como a capacidade da práxis artística comportar em si uma dimensão política e histórica. A tese apresenta a história de um homem que, ao experimentar os fascínios e os desafios da literatura, soma-as à reflexão em seu diálogo com várias sociedades e amigos. Temos uma antologia de grandes momentos do autor (seja como diplomata, crítico, historiador, impressor e homem da palavra). Uma verdadeira carta náutica sobre arte, criação literária, sociedades, política e, claro, a vida. Esta tese transcorre a vida de um homem que registra e habita o tempo e apreende o que é vivido em palavras poéticas
