As a deontic mode of enunciation, the imperative excludes any operation which implies a certain degree of agreement between speaker and addressee - presupposition, referential construction, etc. In order to make up for this fundamental disjunction, the speaker resorts to a range of compensatory devices such as the use of person desinences, the ethical dative, the position of clitic pronouns or the function of the first person plural. Yet an imperative utterance is also related to the declarative context in which it occurs, and this sometimes causes co-locution to give way to co-enunciation - witness the problem of negative imperatives, or markers of discourse consistency such as <em>voyons</em> in French. This twofold theoretical approach is here presented as applying to the French language, and then put to the test of the English language.

This paper presents a semantic treatment of the modal uses of the future tense and the conditional in French and a comparison with their English translations. It is argued that the future and the conditional convey the speaker’s commitment and non-commitment respectively, regardless of how information has been obtained and irrespective of whether this information has been verified or not. Commitment and non-commitment are defined as modes of enunciation depending on how the speaker treats and possibly eliminates representations other than her own representation. The modal meaning of the uses under discussion is shown to derive from a mode of mixed enunciation, which either modulates assertion in the case of commitment or suspends it in the case of noncommitment. In English, this difference is not grammaticalised in the verb system. For example, the modal must may be regarded as an equivalent for both the epistemic conditional and the modal future.

This thesis is a study of the relationship between the narrating self and its enunciation in Robert Penn Warren's All the king's men. The concept of point of view is surveyed and discussed and the poetics of narrative is opposed to the poetics of drama, since All the king's men is a novelization of a play by the same author. It is argued that narrative prose allows for a temporal perspective and is thus the adequate genre for the portrayal of man trapped in the complex tensions of time, a major theme of the novel. The narrative discourse is then analyzed through the categories of time, mode and voice, with the narrator's hesitation being examined in terms of function at the linguistic level. Finally, the fragmented and specular pattern of the enunciation is investigated by examining the insertion of the Cass Mastern episode in the narrative. A concluding reflexion focuses on the other voices which permeate the narrator's discourse and confirm the fragmented configuration of the text.

Anscombre) that the subjunctive mode in itself carries instructions for the semantic interpretation of those enunciations in which it takes part. Those instructions conform a dynamics of argumentation based on the specific polyphonic game that makes the subjunctive distinctive from other modes. The negative constitutes a fundamental factor of this polyphonic behaviour insofar as it presupposes the introduction within the enunciation of two opposing viewpoints, one negative, the other positive, and given that the speaker might choose one or the other or maintain the alternative.

ABSTRACT We present and characterize the galaxy shape catalogue from the first 3 yr of Dark Energy Survey (DES) observations, over an effective area of 4143 deg2 of the southern sky. We describe our data analysis process and our self-calibrating shear measurement pipeline metacalibration, which builds and improves upon the pipeline used in the DES Year 1 analysis in several aspects. The DES Year 3 weak-lensing shape catalogue consists of 100 204 026 galaxies, measured in the riz bands, resulting in a weighted source number density of neff = 5.59 gal arcmin−2 and corresponding shape noise σe = 0.261. We perform a battery of internal null tests on the catalogue, including tests on systematics related to the point spread function (PSF) modelling, spurious catalogue B-mode signals, catalogue contamination, and galaxy properties.

In the academic world of Indian Sociology, the deeply philosophical orientation of A. K. Saran’s approach, together with the masterly approaches developed by Radha Kamal Mukerjee and D. P. Mukerjee, each in his own distinct way came to be known as the trait of the Lucknow School, which made the great contribution of making traditional values not as the object of the study but as the frame of reference for sociological study and analysis. Saran, in this academic endeavour, appears to be influenced by the great philosophers like Rene Guenon, A. K. Coomaraswamy, Frithjof Schuon, Micro Pallis and Titus Burckhardt. These philosophers, though concerned with the crises of modern civilisation, were primarily remained engaged in the enunciation and interpretation of the traditional doctrines at the abstract doctrinal level. But Saran as a professional sociologist remained busy throughout his life in expounding and examining theories and ideologies, problems and problematic, conflicts and contradictions and norms, values and institutions of modern societies and welfarism. Saran took on the negative side of the task, that is, the critique of modernity as his vocation, whose unique logic-dialectical-philosophical method became his trademark. Through this article, I take an opportunity to make today’s academic world familiar with some of the significant contributions of Saran.

ABSTRACT Cross-matching catalogues from radio surveys to catalogues of sources at other wavelengths is extremely hard, because radio sources are often extended, often consist of several spatially separated components, and often no radio component is coincident with the optical/infrared host galaxy. Traditionally, the cross-matching is done by eye, but this does not scale to the millions of radio sources expected from the next generation of radio surveys. We present an innovative automated procedure, using Bayesian hypothesis testing, that models trial radio-source morphologies with putative positions of the host galaxy. This new algorithm differs from an earlier version by allowing more complex radio-source morphologies, and performing a simultaneous fit over a large field. We show that this technique performs well in an unsupervised mode.

A rereading of the falconry motif in Roberto Bolaño’s Nocturno de ChileThe aim of the article is a rereading of the falconry motif in Roberto Bolaño’s novel Nocturno de Chile, based on an analysis of the critical reception existing so far. The study combines the traditional methods of narratology with a close-reading-orientated approach on the textual, narrative and intertextual level. As a result, the formal aspect of the novel, based on the techniques of incongruity and indetermination, is seen as a narrative tool to discredit the fallacies of the narrator’s monologue. By positioning the allegoric and symbolic readings of the motif in the context of the narrative technique, it seems that the main focus of the novel is a deconstruction of the testimonial mode of enunciation and, as a consequence, a critical revaluation of the actual debate on the history and memory in Chile and Latin America.

This paper aims at reexamining the notion of commitment through a case study: the comparison of the periphrases be going to and aller + inf. in contemporary English and French in a variety of texts and syntactic environments. Three cases are examined: the occurrence of the two periphrases in conditional si / if-clauses, their use in narratives and their predictive use in news texts. This study is based on authentic translated data drawn from literary and journalistic texts and relies on an enunciative definition of commitment: commitment is defined as a ‘direct mode of enunciation’ where the speaker is the subjective origin validating or contemplating the future validation of the propositional content. The three cases under scrutiny show that be going to and aller + inf. are not strictly equivalent and I argue that the absence of equivalence can be linked to the fact that they behave differently as far as commitment is concerned.

À cette fin, je distingue dans cet avant-texte deux grandes instances énonciatives : d’une part le scribe, qui regroupe quatre fonctions (le transcripteur, le coordonnateur, le comparateur et l’adaptateur) et d’autre part le scripteur, qui en regroupe huit (le contrôleur, l’actualisateur, le décideur, le gloseur, le scénariste, le rédacteur, l’« aencreur » et l’individu). Illustrée par des exemples très précis empruntés au manuscrit du Cahier des charges, l’analyse de ces différentes fonctions met en lumière les mécanismes spécifiques qui les sous-tendent, les effets qu’elles produisent sur le lecteur et révèle toute la complexité d’un avant-texte qu’on ne saurait réduire à un simple catalogue de contraintes et de consignes oulipiennes.

Aims. We present the second AGILE–GRID catalogue (2AGL) of γ-ray sources in the energy range 100 MeV–10 GeV. Methods. With respect to previous AGILE–GRID catalogues, the current 2AGL catalogue is based on the first 2.3 years of science data from the AGILE mission (the so-called pointing mode) and incorporates more data and several analysis improvements, including better calibrations at the event reconstruction level, an updated model for the Galactic diffuse γ-ray emission, a refined procedure for point-like source detection, and the inclusion of a search for extended γ-ray sources. Results. The 2AGL catalogue includes 175 high-confidence sources (above 4σ significance) with their location regions and spectral properties and a variability analysis with four-day light curves for the most significant. Relying on the error region of each source position, including systematic uncertainties, 122 sources are considered as positionally associated with known counterparts at different wavelengths or detected by other γ-ray instruments. Among the identified or associated sources, 62 are active galactic nuclei (AGNs) of the blazar class. Pulsars represent the largest Galactic source class, with 41 associated pulsars, 7 of which have detected pulsation; 8 supernova remnants and 4 high-mass X-ray binaries have also been identified. A substantial number of 2AGL sources are unidentified: for 53 sources no known counterpart is found at different wavelengths. Among these sources, we discuss a subclass of 29 AGILE–GRID–only γ-ray sources that are not present in 1FGL, 2FGL, or 3FGL catalogues; the remaining sources are unidentified in both 2AGL and 3FGL catalogues. We also present an extension of the analysis of 2AGL sources detected in the energy range 50–100 MeV.

ABSTRACT We characterize an all-sky catalogue of ∼8400 δ Scuti variables in ASAS-SN, which includes ∼3300 new discoveries. Using distances from Gaia DR2, we derive period–luminosity relationships for both the fundamental mode and overtone pulsators in the WJK, V, Gaia DR2 G, J, H, Ks, and W1 bands. We find that the overtone pulsators have a dominant overtone mode, with many sources pulsating in the second overtone or higher order modes. The fundamental mode pulsators have metallicity-dependent periods, with log10(P) ∼ −1.1 for $\rm [Fe/H]\lt -0.3$ and log10(P) ∼ −0.9 for $\rm [Fe/H]\gt 0$, which leads to a period-dependent scale height. Stars with $P\gt 0.100\, \rm d$ are predominantly located close to the Galactic disc ($\rm |\mathit{ Z}|\lt 0.5\, kpc$). The median period at a scale height of $Z\sim 0\, \rm kpc$ also increases with the Galactocentric radius R, from log10(P) ∼ −0.94 for sources with $R\gt 9\, \rm kpc$ to log10(P) ∼ −0.85 for sources with $R\lt 7\, \rm kpc$, which is indicative of a radial metallicity gradient. To illustrate potential applications of this all-sky catalogue, we obtained 30 min cadence, image subtraction TESS light curves for a sample of 10 fundamental mode and 10 overtone δ Scuti stars discovered by ASAS-SN. From this sample, we identified two new δ Scuti eclipsing binaries, ASASSN-V J071855.62−434247.3 and ASASSN-V J170344.20−615941.2 with short orbital periods of Porb = 2.6096 and 2.5347 d, respectively.

ABSTRACT Following frequency and mode identification of two candidate γ Doradus stars, HD 103257 and HD 109799, both can be categorized as bona-fide members of the class. Over 250 high-resolution spectra of the two stars were collected at University of Canterbury Mount John Observatory (UCMJO) using the High Efficiency and Resolution Canterbury University Large Echelle Spectrograph (HERCULES) spectrograph. The spectra were cross-correlated with a synthetic δ-function template to produce line-profiles and further augmented with high-quality photometry from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission, the Wide Angle Search for Planets (WASP) archive, and HIPPARCOS catalogue for frequency and mode analysis. Frequency analysis was carried out using FAMIAS and SigSpec. Two pulsation frequencies were identified in the spectra for HD 103257: 1.22496 ± 0.00001 and 1.14569 ± 0.00002 d−1, explaining 58.9 ${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of the variation across the line profiles. Both frequencies were characterized with best-fitting modes of (ℓ, m) = (1, 1). Two pulsation frequencies were identified in the spectra for HD 109799: 1.48679 ± 0.00002 and 1.25213 ± 0.00002 d−1, explaining 32.6 ${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$ of the variation across the line profiles. Both frequencies also yielded individual mode fits of modes (ℓ, m) = (1, 1). The excellent quality photometry from TESS observations has proven complementary to the work herein, and will provide a meaningful opportunity for deeper analysis of additional stars in the HERCULES catalogue. This will be a key component in the continued development of models relating to the processes within γ Doradus stars.

This paper seeks both to expand the range of what counts as political action for dysfluent voices and to find resources that can generate critical breaks within neo-liberal modes of power. With the Cynics, I suggest that some truths – like dysfluent lives are worth living – cannot be told by a talking head. I accordingly map three possible modes of truth-telling within the lexicon of parrhesia: therapeutic, Platonic and Cynic. Therapeutic truth-telling is an apolitical enunciation that indexes a model of authenticity and is limited to speaking truth about oneself and the world in a normalizing register. Platonic parrhesia is a form of equality-based political discourse that aims at inclusion. In this mode, the parrhesiastes, like the talking head, must fashion their body as a pure vessel of truth to be recognized as such. Cynic truth-telling, finally, is a radical embodiment of critique that seeks rupture rather than understanding. Taking up the motto of the Cynics – ‘deface the currency’ – perhaps dysfluent voices can find resources to ‘de-face’ speech and its mythic power that has become entwined with capital.

AbstractUsing data from the Radial Velocity Experiment (RAVE) and the Tycho- Gaia astrometric solution catalogue (TGAS), we study the vertical velocity (Vz) patterns in the Milky Way disc. We search in particular for variation in velocity with distance above and below the disc midplane. In contrast to previous suggestions of a breathing mode seen in RAVE data, our results support a combination of bending and breathing modes, likely generated by a combination of external or internal and external mechanisms.

Context. Eclipsing binary systems with components that pulsate in gravity modes (g modes) allow for simultaneous and independent constraints of the chemical mixing profiles of stars. The high precision of the dynamical masses and radii as well as the imposition of identical initial chemical compositions and equivalent ages provide strong constraints during the modelling of g-mode period-spacing patterns. Aims. We aim to assemble a sample of g-mode pulsators in detached eclipsing binaries with the purpose of finding good candidates for future evolutionary and asteroseismic modelling. In addition, we present a case study of the eclipsing binary KIC9850387, identified as our most promising candidate, and detail the results of the observational spectroscopic, photometric, and asteroseismic analysis of the system. Methods. We selected all of the detached eclipsing binaries in the Kepler eclipsing binary catalogue with Kepler Input Catalogue (KIC) temperatures between 6000 K and 10 000 K, and performed a visual inspection to determine the presence and density of g modes, and the presence of g-mode period-spacing patterns in their frequency spectra. We then characterised our sample based on their g-mode pulsational parameters and binary and atmospheric parameters. A spectroscopic follow-up of our most promising candidate was then performed, and the orbital elements of the system were extracted. We then performed spectral disentangling followed by atmospheric modelling and abundance analysis for the primary star. We utilised an iterative approach to simultaneously optimise the pulsational and eclipse models, and subsequently performed an analysis of the pressure- (p-) and g-mode pulsational frequencies. Results. We compiled a sample of 93 Kepler eclipsing binary stars with g-mode pulsating components and identified clear g-mode period-spacing patterns in the frequency spectra of seven of these systems. We also identified 11 systems that contained hybrid p- and g-mode pulsators. We found that the g-mode pulsational parameters and the binary and atmospheric parameters of our sample are weakly correlated at best, as expected for detached main-sequence binaries. We find that the eclipsing binary KIC9850387 is a double-lined spectroscopic binary in a near-circular orbit with a hybrid p- and g-mode pulsating primary with Mp = 1.66−0.01+0.01 M⊙ and Rp = 2.154−0.004+0.002 R⊙, and a solar-like secondary with Ms = 1.062−0.005+0.003 M⊙ and Rs = 1.081−0.002+0.003 R⊙. We find ℓ = 1 and ℓ = 2 period-spacing patterns in the frequency spectrum of KIC9850387 spanning more than ten radial orders each, which will allow for stringent constraints of stellar structure during future asteroseismic modelling.

Abstract. This study presents a catalogue of synoptic patterns of torrential rainfall in northeast of the Iberian Peninsula (IP). These circulation patterns were obtained by applying a T-mode Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to a daily data grid (NCEP/NCAR reanalysis) at sea level pressure (SLP). The analysis made use of 304 days which recorded >100 mm in one or more stations in provinces of Barcelona, Girona and Tarragona (coastland area of Catalonia) throughout the 1950–2005 period. The catalogue comprises 7 circulation patterns showing a great variety of atmospheric conditions and seasonal or monthly distribution. Likewise, we computed the mean index value of the Western Mediterranean Oscillation index (WeMOi) for the synoptic patterns obtained by averaging all days grouped in each pattern. The results showed a clear association between the negative values of this teleconnection index and torrential rainfall in northeast of the IP. We therefore put forward the WeMO as an essential tool for forecasting heavy rainfall in northeast of Spain.

It is a commonly held assumption that new technologies have changed human society, culture, and communication dramatically. New phenomena appear, and the new reality is a challenge on many levels. The mass expansion of the Internet, since the early 1990s, has brought new circumstances at the economic, social, and cultural levels, as well as new forms of behavior and expression. In recent years, the basic practice of instructors, dancers, and dance enthusiasts is searching and downloading videos on traditional Greek dancing. In many cases, the videos are considered “research” products capable of supporting the teaching of dance in traditional dance groups. What inevitably emerges is a mode of YouTube as a new digital dance archive. In this peculiar condition, the production, distribution, and “assessment” of the content are in the hands of the user community, who, as Derrida notes, are possessed by one “irrepressible desire to return to the origin”. In Foucault's terms, the archive is a space of enunciation. Repositioned as something that defies exhaustive description, for Foucault, the archive becomes engaged in the production and authorization of discourse itself. This perspective raises questions about the issues of standards, evaluation, and quality of the “material”. But, the most important question is, what is the concept and the content of the terms “research” and “teaching?”

AbstractThe SRC-J and ESO-B Sky Survey copy films are being used to compile a major new catalogue of apparent diameters, axis ratios, and relative bar/ring position angles of inner and outer rings in more than one thousand southern galaxies. This paper presents a preliminary analysis of the data for about two hundred SB rings of both types. It is concluded that the rings have a wide range of intrinsic eccentricities, and more importantly that they have preferred alignments, one mode for inner rings and two for outer rings, with respect to bars.

How do elites signal their superior social position via the consumption of culture? We address this question by drawing on 120 years of “recreations” data ( N = 71,393) contained within Who’s Who, a unique catalogue of the British elite. Our results reveal three historical phases of elite cultural distinction: first, a mode of aristocratic practice forged around the leisure possibilities afforded by landed estates, which waned significantly in the late-nineteenth century; second, a highbrow mode dominated by the fine arts, which increased sharply in the early-twentieth century before gently receding in the most recent birth cohorts; and, third, a contemporary mode characterized by the blending of highbrow pursuits with everyday forms of cultural participation, such as spending time with family, friends, and pets. These shifts reveal changes not only in the contents of elite culture but also in the nature of elite distinction, in particular, (1) how the applicability of emulation and (mis)recognition theories has changed over time, and (2) the emergence of a contemporary mode that publicly emphasizes everyday cultural practice (to accentuate ordinariness, authenticity, and cultural connection) while retaining many tastes that continue to be (mis)recognized as legitimate.

Abstract. A catalogue of nonlinear vortex structures associated with acoustic-gravity perturbations in the Earth's atmosphere is presented. Besides the previously known Kelvin-Stewart cat's eyes, dipolar and tripolar structures, new solutions having the form of a row of counter-rotating vortices, and several weakly two-dimensional vortex chains are given. The existence conditions for these nonlinear structures are discussed with respect to the presence of inhomogeneities of the shear flows. The mode-coupling mechanism for the nonlinear generation of shear flows in the presence of linearly unstable acoustic-gravity waves, possibly also leading to intermittency and chaos, is presented.

In his catalogue of the Haram documents, D. P. Little has brought attention to a group of nine items, which he identifies with what the handbooks and other contemporary sources describe as murabba'āt One may accept the translation ‘square’ for convenience sake, but the surviving examples show that murabba'a should strictly be understood as ‘quadrangular’. Under question are documents written on a sheet of paper in ‘landscape’ mode, folded centrally to form four pages, and distinguished from documents written on a piece of paper in ‘portrait’ mode or a series of these stuck together to produce a scroll. While looking through the Cambridge University Library's varied collection of material, both paper and papyrus, that is known by the name of its immediate source, Michaelides, I came across one more example, at least, if one judges bythe shape and general lay-out. It seems to be of sufficient interest to merit a brief study, with some cross-reference to the Haram material.

This paper explores a new method to model and forecast the global earthquake energy release time series. The ISC-GEM catalogue of global events with magnitude [Formula: see text] is used in this study. The magnitudes of individual events are converted into seismic energy using an empirical relation. The annual earthquake energy time series is constructed by adding the energy releases of all the events in a particular year. Then, the energy time series is decomposed into finite number of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) using empirical mode decomposition (EMD) technique. The periodicities of these IMF’s and their contribution to the total variance of the data are examined to identify the influence of natural phenomenon on earthquake energy release. The artificial neural network technique (ANN) is further used for modeling the energy-time series. The model is verified with an independent subset of data and validated using statistical parameters. The forecast of the annual earthquake energy release is provided for the year 2016.

RIBLIN (Réseau informatisé de bibliothèques/Library Information Network) a été formé à la dissolution du réseau Télécat-Unicat (Télécatalogage en coopération-Union catalogue). Ce projet coopératif de télécatalogage bilingue, en temps réel et en mode conversationnel, avait été élaboré en 1973. En 1980, plus de vingt bibliothèques du Québec et de l’Ontario, universitaires pour la plupart, y participaient. Le projet d’origine visait plusieurs objectifs. Un des plus importants était la formation d’un catalogue collectif ordinolingue, lequel comptait plus de 900 000 dossiers lors de l’effritement du groupe Télécat-Unicat survenu en juin 1980 à la suite du retrait massif des bibliothèques ontariennes. Les causes de ce mouvement de retrait furent de diverses natures. Les participants ontariens remettaient en question, entre autres choses, le principe de la collaboration et la nécessité du maintien de services communs. Pour leur part, les bibliothèques québécoises participantes manifestèrent leur volonté de poursuivre la collaboration et formèrent, dès août 1980, un nouveau consortium, RIBLIN inc., qui prit la relève du premier organisme en poursuivant sensiblement les mêmes objectifs. Du point de vue technologique, peu de changements majeurs sont intervenus si ce n’est une nouvelle architecture des fichiers permettant plus de souplesse dans l’utilisation des données stockées.

Somewhat more than a century after its introduction for the purpose of discovering minor planets, photography is now rapidly giving way to the CCD as the technology of choice for observing these bodies. A CCD has been used in scanning mode in the University of Arizona's ‘Spacewatch’ program for the discovery of minor planets since as long ago as 1984 (Gehrels 1984, Gehrels et al. 1986), while a CCD in stare mode was first applied as a matter of routine to an established observing program for astrometric follow-up in 1989—that at the Oak Ridge Observatory in Massachusetts (McCrosky 1990). After its initial 1984–1986 success, Spacewatch was modified with the help of a larger CCD and improved computer software and with the adoption of the particular mission of searching for NEOs, or minor planets (and comets) that pass close to the earth (Rabinowitz 1991, Scotti 1994). The Oak Ridge program utilizes a 1.5-m reflector, and the first CCD observations were reduced using the Astrographic Catalogue, the mainstay of the Oak Ridge photographic program back to its inauguration in 1972, as well as of other older photographic programs in which the fields observed were significantly less than 1° across. Within months, the availability, on CD-ROMs, of the STScI Guide Star Catalogue (Villard 1989) effectively consigned the venerable AC to the scrap-heap, and the rapid development of ready-made and relatively inexpensive CCD systems (e.g., di Cicco 1992) has recently increased the volume of CCD astrometry considerably, allowing it to be conveniently and reliably carried out, even by amateur astronomers. At the present time, very nearly 50 percent of the astrometric observations, typically 6000, published each month in the Minor Planet Center's Minor Planet Circulars are obtained by means of a CCD.

This article offers a Deleuzian practice of reading as a form of problematization: constructing or “mapping” an author’s lived problematics to which his or her writing responds as so many solutions. Unlike readings that treat authors as patients whose personal pathological symptoms manifest in their literary works, a Deleuzian reading sees them as physicians of their cultures responding to an intolerable mode of existence, which is indiscernibly both personal and collective. A Deleuzian reading thus explores both the symptoms of pathological social present and new possibilities of life as they receive formal expressions in the literary work and the author’s style. Such practice essentially operates by actively constructing a series of underlying problems and their corresponding formal solutions, a move that, at the same time, establishes immanent criteria for critically evaluating a particular literary response (a solution) to the entrapment of life forces in pathological modes of existence (a problematics). The author discusses how and why a Deleuzian reading is both possible and desirable and takes Israeli author David Grossman’s novel The Book of Intimate Grammar as its primary case. This reading studies the novel through three conceptual problems in literary theory: the author as the site of the creative process, the use of language as an expression of an author’s literary technique, and the conditions for literary enunciation. It also demonstrates the strengths and benefits of Deleuzian readings in extra-Anglophone and extra-Francophone contexts.

AbstractWe present basic information about package SPHOTOM for an automatic multicolour photometry. This package is in development for the creation of a photometric pipe-line, which we plan to use in the near future with our new instruments. It could operate in two independent modes, (i) GUI mode, in which the user can select images and control functions of package through interface and (ii) command line mode, in which all processes are controlled using a main parameter file. SPHOTOM is developed as a universal package for Linux based systems with easy implementation for different observatories. The photometric part of the package is based on the Sextractor code, which allows us to detect all objects on the images and perform their photometry with different apertures. We can also perform astrometric solutions for all images for a correct cross-identification of the stars on the images. The result is a catalogue of all objects with their instrumental photometric measurements which are consequently used for a differential magnitudes calculations with one or more comparison stars, transformations to an international system, and determinations of colour indices.

AbstractThe Parkes-MIT-NRAO (PMN) 4.85 GHz continuum radio survey of the southern sky was undertaken in 1990 June and November. This survey was performed on the Parkes 64 m telescope using the NRAO seven-beam receiver. A point-source catalogue of 36,640 radio sources has been produced for the Southern Survey zone −87.5° ≤δ ≤ −37° and for the Tropical Survey zone −29° ≤δ ≤ −9.5°. The flux limit of this survey varies with declination and is typically about 30 mJy.We have begun to cross-correlate the PMN data with sources contained in catalogues compiled at radio, and other, wavelengths. We have found associations for 96% of the PKSCAT90 2700 MHz database sources, and 95% of the Molonglo 408 MHz Catalogue sources within in the PMN Southern and Tropical Survey zones.A program to identify the optical counterparts of PMN Southern Survey point sources, S4.85 GHz ≥ 70 mJy, using the COSMOS database, is under way. To facilitate this programme we are improving the positional accuracy of PMN sources with observations made at the Australia Telescope National Facility compact array. We have developed a new “snapshot” mode of observing to process the large number of sources (~ 8000) in our sample. Context. The morphology of galaxies provide us with a unique tool for relating and understanding other physical properties and their changes over the course of cosmic time. It is only recently that we have been afforded access to a wealth of data for an unprecedented number galaxies thanks to large and deep surveys. Aims. We present the morphological catalogue of the OTELO survey galaxies detected with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST)-ACS F814W images. We explore various methods applied in previous works to separate early-type (ET) and late-type (LT) galaxies classified via spectral energy distribution (SED) fittings using galaxy templates. Together with this article, we are releasing a catalogue containing the main morphological parameters in the F606W and F814W bands derived for more than 8000 sources. Methods. The morphological analysis is based on the single-Sérsic profile fit. We used the GALAPAGOS2 software to provide multi-wavelength morphological parameters fitted simultaneously in two HST-ACS bands. The GALAPAGOS2 software detects, prepares guess values for GALFIT-M, and provides the best-fitting single-Sérsic model in both bands for each source. Stellar masses were estimated using synthetic rest-frame magnitudes recovered from SED fittings of galaxy templates. The morphological catalogue is complemented with concentration indexes from a separate SExtractor dual, high dynamical range mode. Results. A total of 8812 sources were successfully fitted with single-Sérsic profiles. The analysis of a carefully selected sample of ∼3000 sources up to zphot = 2 is presented in this work, of which 873 sources were not detected in previous studies. We found no statistical evidence for the evolution of the low-mass end of mass–size relation for ET and LT since z = 2. Furthermore, we found a good agreement for the median size evolution for ET and LT galaxies, for a given stellar mass, with the data from the literature. Compared to previous works on faint field galaxies, we found similarities regarding their rest-frame colours as well as the Sérsic and concentration indices.

Context. The second data release of the Gaia mission (DR2) includes an advance catalogue of variable stars. The classifications of these stars are based on sparse photometry from the first 22 months of the mission. Aims. We set out to investigate the purity and completeness of the all-sky Gaia classification results with the help of the continuous light curves of the observed targets from the Kepler and K2 missions, focusing specifically on RR Lyrae and Cepheid pulsators, outside the Galactic bulge region. Methods. We cross-matched the Gaia identifications with the observations collected by the Kepler space telescope. We inspected the light curves visually, then calculated the relative Fourier coefficients and period ratios for the single- and double-mode K2 RR Lyrae stars to further classify them. Results. We identified 1443 and 41 stars classified as RR Lyrae or Cepheid variables in Gaia DR2 in the targeted observations of the two missions and 263 more RR Lyre targets in the full-frame images (FFI) of the original mission. We provide the cross-match of these sources. We conclude that the RR Lyrae catalogue has a completeness between 70–78%, and provide a purity estimate of between 92 and 98% (targeted observations) with lower limits of 75% (FFI stars) and 51% (K2 worst-case scenario). The low number of Cepheids prevents us from drawing detailed conclusions, but the purity of the DR2 sample is estimated to be about 66%.

This paper includes the calculations and construction of load diagrams and static characteristics of individual mechanisms of a mining combine, which form a combined multi-motor electric drive system, using methods of equivalent efforts and reduced moments. The operating forces of idle and on-load mechanisms are calculated, operation time intervals and a complete working cycle are determined. The load diagrams of mechanisms are constructed and their kinematic diagrams are designed. Based on the calculations made, asynchronous motors with a short-circuit rotor, which have the closest power values and are suitable in terms of voltage and operating mode, were selected from the catalogue. The gear reduction ratio is calculated, static resistance moments and operating speeds to the motor shaft are specified. The static characteristics of the most powerful electric motor of a mining combine - effector - are formulated.

ABSTRACT Fanaroff–Riley type II (FR II) low-excitation radio galaxies (LERGs) are characterized by weak nuclear excitation on parsec-scales and properties typical of powerful FR IIs (defined as high-excitation radio galaxies, hereafter HERGs/BLRGs) on kiloparsec-scales. Since a link between the accretion properties and the power of the produced jets is expected both from theory and observations, their nature is still debated. In this work, we investigate the X-ray properties of a complete sample of 19 FR II-LERGs belonging to the 3CR catalogue, exploiting Chandra and XMM–Newton archival data. We also analyse 32 FR II-HERGs/BLRGs with Chandra data as a control sample. We compared FR II-LERG and FR II-HERG/BLRG X-ray properties and optical data available in literature to obtain a wide outlook of their behaviour. The low accretion rate estimates for FR II-LERGs, from both X-ray and optical bands, allow us to firmly reject the hypothesis as they are the highly obscured counterpart of powerful FR II-HERGs/BLRGs. Therefore, at least two hypothesis can be invoked to explain the FR II-LERG nature: (i) they are evolving from classical FR IIs because of the depletion of accreting cold gas in the nuclear region, while the extended radio emission is the heritage of a past efficiently accreting activity; and (ii) they are an intrinsically distinct class of objects with respect to classical FR Is/FR IIs. Surprisingly, in this direction, a correlation between accretion rates and environmental richness is found in our sample. The richer the environment is, the more inefficient is the accretion. In this framework, the FR II-LERGs are intermediate between FR Is and FR II-HERGs/BLRGs both in terms of accretion rate and environment.

The purpose of this article is to conduct an axiological and legal analysis of the most popular model of participatory (civic) budgeting in Poland (the plebiscite model). According to the adopted hypothesis, some legal and practical solutions concerning the plebiscite model strengthen public values, while others weaken them. In the research, the combination of three coherent methods was used: (i) a literature analysis, (ii) the dogmatic and legal method, and (iii) interviews conducted with municipal officials responsible for the organization of participatory budgeting (PB), municipal councillors and residents (BP participants). The research covers six Polish cities: Sopot, Gdańsk, Białystok, Kraków, Opole and Warsaw. The axiological and legal analysis of the principles and mode of BP was made using a catalogue of nodal public values, namely values with a significant number of related values (including: human dignity, sustainability, citizen involvement, openness, secrecy, compromise, integrity, and robustness). The research leads to the conclusion that the plebiscite BP in Poland is not axiologically neutral, its principles and mode have both a positive and negative impact on particular nodal public values. The scale of negative impact is definitely greater than the scale of the positive one, although, obviously, the assessment in this respect, even if supported by arguments and scientific analysis, will always remain at least partly subjective.

ABSTRACT We detect the neutral hydrogen (H i) radial brightness temperature profile in large-scale haloes by stacking 48 430 galaxies selected from the 2dFGRS catalogue on to a set of 21-cm intensity maps obtained with the Parkes radio telescope, spanning a total area of ∼1300 deg2 on the sky and covering the redshift range 0.06 ≲ z ≲ 0.10. Maps are obtained by removing both 10 and 20 foreground modes in the principal component analysis. We perform the stack at the map level and extract the profile from a circularly symmetrized version of the halo emission. We detect the H i halo emission with the significance 12.5σ for the 10-mode and 13.5σ for the 20-mode removed maps at the profile peak. We jointly fit for the observed halo mass Mv and the normalization $c_{0,\rm H\, \small{I}}$ for the H i concentration parameter against the reconstructed profiles, using functional forms for the H i halo abundance proposed in the literature. We find $\log _{10}{(M_{\rm v}/\text{M}_{\odot })}= 16.1^{+0.1}_{-0.2}$, $c_{0,\rm H\, \small{I}}=3.5^{+0.7}_{-1.0}$ for the 10-mode and $\log _{10}{(M_{\rm v}/\text{M}_{\odot })}= 16.5^{+0.1}_{-0.2}$, $c_{0,\rm H\, \small{I}}=5.3^{+1.1}_{-1.7}$ for the 20-mode removed maps. These estimates show the detection of the integrated contribution from multiple galaxies located inside very massive haloes. We also consider subsamples of 13 979 central and 34 361 satellite 2dF galaxies separately, and obtain marginal differences suggesting satellite galaxies are H i-richer. This work shows for the first time the feasibility of testing theoretical models for the H i halo content directly on profiles extracted from 21-cm maps and opens future possibilities for exploiting upcoming H i intensity-mapping data.

‘Water wars’ are back. Conflicts in Syrian, Yemen and Israel/Palestine are regularly framed as motivated by water and presented as harbingers of a world to come. The return of ‘water wars’ rhetoric, long after its 1990s heyday, has been paralleled by an increasing interest among novelists in water as a cause of conflict. This literature has been under-explored in existing work in the Blue Humanities, while scholarship on cli-fi has focused on scenarios of too much water, rather than not enough. In this article I catalogue key features of what I call the ‘water wars novel’, surveying works by Paolo Bacigalupi, Sarnath Banerjee, Varda Burstyn, Assaf Gavron, Emmi Itäranta, Karen Jayes and Cameron Stracher, writing from the United States, India, Canada, Israel, Finland and South Africa. I identify the water wars novel as a distinctive and increasingly prominent mode of ‘cli-fi’ that reveals and obscures important dimensions of water crises of the past, present and future.
