In Fratelli tutti, Pope Francis wonders why it took the Church so long to condemn slavery unequivocally. Indeed, the place of slavery in Catholic teaching provides a test case of change in official Church intellectual tradition. This paper examines the divergent arguments of four authors who have written about Church teaching on slavery: Pope Leo XIII, Fr. Joel S. Panzer, Judge John T. Noonan Jr., and Fr. John Francis Maxwell. It considers the statement on slavery in the Catechism of the Catholic Church in light of Pope John Paul II’s meditation on the nature of human labor in Laborem exercens

Pope Francis’s two encyclicals—Laudato si’ and Fratelli tutti—belong to the tradition of Catholic social teaching that began in 1891 with Pope Leo XIII’s Rerum novarum. There have been continuities and discontinuities within the tradition of Catholic social teaching, but there has been a tendency to downplay the discontinuities. Francis’s two encyclicals show both discontinuities and continuities with the earlier documents. The final section criticizes these two encyclicals as being too overly optimistic in their approach to solving the problems facing the environment and the social, political

I propose the Pope’s emphasis on a proactive policy —rather than on confronting liberal States— constituted a successful strategy to detonate widespread Catholic activism. I conclude that, throughout this series of encyclicals, via the adoption of a secular language and of various concepts of political liberalism, the Pope built a

Pope Leo XIII wrote the papal encyclical Rerum Novarum in 1891. Rerum Novarum represents the first papal encyclical devoted to Catholic social teaching, or church teachings that address social, economic, and ecological justice. Pope Leo XIII had been trained in Thomistic philosophy and theology (the teachings of Saint Thomas Aquinas). He thus addressed various matters of contemporary concern from within this framework. There are two major inspirations for his writing Rerum Novarum. The first concerns the injustices that emerged during and after the Industrial Revolution (roughly 1760– 1840). T

Abstract The influence of the Catholic Church in Ireland was felt in every aspect of Irish life. At the beginning of the period the Church was at the zenith of its political power having helped to deliver Catholic emancipation. The Famine came to overshadow all aspects of Irish life and its end coincided with the return to Ireland of Paul Cullen who did much to refashion the ethos of Irish Catholicism. By the 1880s, the hierarchy gave unqualified support to Home Rule in exchange for support over Catholic education, and thus began a symbiotic relationship between the Church and the Irish Party.

Abstract In 1879 Pope Leo XIII did two remarkable things. He published the encyclical Aeterni Patris commending the study of St Thomas Aquinas, and in the same year he appointed as Cardinal John Henry Newman. These two actions, in the eyes of many, gave two contradictory signals. In elevating Newman, who had been close to the inopportunist party at the Vatican Council, and had been an object of suspicion to the Curia of Pio Nono, Pope Leo was taken by many to indicate a more liberal attitude to the modern world. It came about through pastoral and missionary praxis as well as the rise in power of lay Christian actors: between two popes known for their intransigence, Pope Leo XIII, without compromising on any religious dogma, opened the way for the Church to engage with secular politics. Moreover, Pope Leo XIII took into account the ‘social question’, acknowledging that people were no longer living in a traditional society. The issue was no longer to bring the faithful back

The period was marked by a constant culture war between ecclesiastical and anti-ecclesiastical attitudes and positions, in Italy and Europe. As we saw in Chapter 3, mobilization of Catholic energies to meet the wartime crisis led to the creation of the National Catholic War Council.
