Abstract Printed vernacular Bibles appeared in many European languages well before the Protestant Reformation, but in England the story is quite different. The first Catholic English New Testament was not printed until 1582, long after numerous Protestant editions had flooded the English Bible market. This article focuses on readers of this 1582 annotated Rheims New Testament, published by exiles in France and shipped surreptitiously northward for missionaries to convert, affirm, and educate British Catholics. Once in England this edition garnered an immense outpouring of printed confutations.

The Wayward Flock: Catholic Youth in Postwar West Germany offers readers an elegantly written analysis of German Catholic subculture, or “milieu.” Ruff examines how it once successfully operated in the mid-nineteenth century and then explores why the same strategies failed to win the continued support of young Catholics in the postwar era of the Federal Republic. Ruff modifies the standard interpretation of the 1950s as a static time in German history, examines the impact of consumer culture on the Catholic subculture, and offers his own contribution to the theories of secularization.

While sadness and grief are recognised as part of ordinary life, deep and persistent sadness is described as incompatible with the hope and cheerfulness expected of a Christian. The recommendations offered show the influence of traditional Catholic anthropology, current medical practice, psychology and a broader cultural emphasis on willpower. “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.” Media Image of Protestantism in Prekmurje in the Past In Prekmurje, the leading publisher of newspapers in the local Slovene language was the Catholic priest Jožef Klekl Sr. (1874–1948), who published the highly popular monthly Marijin list (since 1919) and the weekly Novine (until 1941). After the unification of Prekmurje with the rest of Slovenes, the range of newspapers expanded and each publisher or editor tried to reach the readers in his own way—with carefully selected publications. Most readers believe Grotius failed to refute Socinus in De satisfactione. This article argues that Grotius’s failure was one of reception rather than argument. It is possible to read De satisfactione as Grotius adverted: a genuine (if subtle) concept of satisfaction, and a defence of the (small-c) catholic faith. Grotius does reject a necessitarian identical satisfaction, in which a repayment is equal to a debt, but like Aquinas, he embraces a teleological equivalent satisfaction, in which a punishment fits a crime. Yet Grotius’s catholic theory was predestined not to persuade a wartime Conti

Abstract This article presents two German Catholic prayer books written by the two sixteenth-century priests Johann Faber OP and Peter Michael Brillmacher SJ – known for their catechetical and apologetical work in areas of confessional division. Adding to the claims by early twentieth-century researchers that these books were used for “resisting and combating Protestantism,” I argue that they were tools for the re-Catholicising of Protestant populations. By referring to the Church fathers “and the old Christians” as proof for the ancient origin and the orthodoxy of beliefs and practices questi

This article offers three theological buttresses for the immediately preceding article by Carol Hill. Information about and from Genesis and Romans is presented that I think will be new to most readers. Several of the most important points are drawn from Jewish sources which I think Catholic and Protestant commentators have overlooked to their detriment. Ignoring these sources has produced needless, grievous troubles for scripture interpretation—especially for Genesis.

The moral permissibility of certain acts traditionally considered abortion has become a subject of much debate in recent years. One of the main points in this debate is the question of whether there exists a difference between “abortion as removal” and “abortion as killing.” This essay strives to present readers with an orthodox interpretation of Church documents regarding abortion, giving clear and well-supported evidence that this distinction is not found in Catholic teaching

Using the anthology as a vehicle for the presentation of innovative poetry as well as a guidebook on how to read it, Pound experimented with anthology formats to propel readers into the project of modernism through devices such as elliptical prefaces and fragmentary

In A Dialogue Concerning Heresies, More draws upon the resources of rhetoric to deflect Reformers’ attacks against Catholic doctrine and liturgy. According to Aristotle, Cicero, Quintilian, and Erasmus, the rhetorical concepts of enargeia (vividness) and energeia (verve) enable orators to persuade and move their readers and listeners more effectively. In the Dialogue More employed techniques, tropes, and dialogic structures associated with these concepts, thereby rendering more clearly the dangers of heresies, and transforming dry Scholastic disputation into lively dramatic debate.

Although some readers argue that the Apologia pro vita sua is not true autobiography, Newman in fact draws on models of spiritual autobiography in two traditions—one English and Protestant, the other Augustinian and Catholic. In the early chapters, Newman patterns his account on Thomas Scott's Force of Truth, presenting his own religious development as a series of encounters with theological texts but replacing the typological hermeneutics of Scott (and of most other Protestant autobiographers) with an interpretive method derived from ecclesiastical history.
