Abstract Phase relationships in the Ce-Nd-B ternary system at 773 K were investigated by means of X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy techniques. Six borides, i. e. CeB4, CeB6, NdB4, NdB6, NdB66 and Nd2B5 are confirmed in this work. No ternary compound was observed. CeB4 and NdB4 were discovered to form the continuous solid solution phase (Ce,Nd)B4, CeB6 and NdB6 also form the solid solution phase (Ce,Nd)B6. The maximum solid solubility of Ce in (Ce,Nd)2B5 phase is 46.5 at.%. The isothermal section of the Ce-Nd-B ternary system at 773 K consists of 3 three-phase regions, 7 two-phase regions and 7 single- phase regions.

ABSTRACT Streptomyces reticuli has an inducible ATP-dependent uptake system specific for cellobiose and cellotriose. By reversed genetics a gene cluster encoding components of a binding protein-dependent cellobiose and cellotriose ABC transporter was cloned and sequenced. The deduced gene products comprise a regulatory protein (CebR), a cellobiose binding lipoprotein (CebE), two integral membrane proteins (CebF and CebG), and the NH2-terminal part of an intracellular β-glucosidase (BglC). The gene for the ATP binding protein MsiK is not linked to the ceb operon. We have shown earlier that MsiK is part of two different ABC transport systems, one for maltose and one for cellobiose and cellotriose, in S. reticuli and Streptomyces lividans. Transcription of polycistronic cebEFG and bglC mRNAs is induced by cellobiose, whereas the cebR gene is transcribed independently. Immunological experiments showed that CebE is synthesized during growth with cellobiose and that MsiK is produced in the presence of several sugars at high or moderate levels. The described ABC transporter is the first one of its kind and is the only specific cellobiose/cellotriose uptake system of S. reticuli, since insertional inactivation of the cebEgene prevents high-affinity uptake of cellobiose.

B4C-CeB6 porous composites are prepared by hot pressed sintering between 1900°C and 2000°C, and mechanical properties and phase composition of B4C-CeB6 porous composites were tested. The results show that the porous rate of B4C-CeB6 porous composites ranges between 30%-48% at sintering temperate 1900°C-2000°C. Porous rate of B4C-CeB6 porous composites is decreased with temperature be increased. Flexibility strength of B4C-CeB6 porous composites is greatly improved compared with that of monolithic porous boron carbide. B4C react with CeO2 to completely form CeB6 in porous composites.

B4C-CeB6/Al composite was fabricated by pressureless infiltration technology. It is composed of the phases of Al, B4C, AlB2, Al3BC and CeB6, and Al4C3 is not found because of the existence of CeB6. It could identify that AlB2, CeB6, and Al3BC were formed as interfacial reaction products. Al3BC is formed on the interface of B4C and Al; therefore it connects the aluminum with the ceramic toughly. AlB2 as strip crystal is formed between B4C and Al, which has higher fracture toughness.CeB6 particles in B4C grain boundary are discovered by TEM, which caused intercrystalline rupture. Grain toughening and reinforcing, crack deflection, crack bridging is the main toughening and reinforcing mechanisms of B4C-CeB6/Al composites.

Annotation:

The B4C-CeO2 composites were prepared by pressure-free infiltration method. The chemical reactions and products of CeO2 and B4C in the temperature range of 20~1500 were studied by TG-DTA and X-ray diffraction analysis. The results show that the B4C and CeO2 reaction products are CeB4, B, CeBO3 in 550~1240 and the product of CeO2 reaction with B4C is CeB6 in the temperature range of 1240~1300℃.

Annotation:

High-purity and homogeneous powders of CeB6 with nanometer size were prepared by combustion synthesis and subsequent acid- leaching. The effects of reactant ratio on the phase and morphology of the combustion product were discussed. The combustion product and leached product were analyzed by XRD, SEM and EDS. The results indicate that the combustion product consists of CeB6, MgO and Mg3B2O6. The combustion products are denser and less layered when the Mg content and KClO3 content increase. The content of CeB6 in the combustion product could be enhanced with increasing the excessive content of Mg. The purity of CeB6 is higher than 99.0% and its particles are smaller than 150nm.

Cette thèse porte sur l'étude par diffusion inélastique de neutrons des propriétés magnétiques de borures de terre rare : ceb#6, prb#6 et ybb#1#2. La difficulté de réalisation des expériences, notamment la faiblesse des signaux due en partie à la forte absorption des neutrons par le bore, nous a conduit à inclure, dans un programme d'analyse, la correction d'absorption. La partie principale de cette thèse a été l'étude des interactions magnétiques dans les phases ordonnées de ceb#6 et prb#6. Nous avons confirmé la présence d'interactions magnétiques quadrupolaires importantes, grâce à la mesure des excitations magnétiques dans la phase quadrupolaire de ceb#6 en appliquant un champ magnétique dont la valeur était comprise entre 0 et 6 t, et dans les phases double-k et simple-k basse température de prb#6. De plus nous avons montré qu'il semble exister une compétition entre les interactions magnétiques quadrupolaires et les interactions magnétiques dipolaires dans le compose ceb#6, alors que les interactions quadrupolaires dans prb#6 semblent au contraire renforcer la structure magnétique dipolaire. Les mesures effectuées avec le compose ybb#1#2 nous ont permis de donner une valeur de 60 k pour l'énergie du gap, cette valeur étant conforme à celles obtenues par des mesures de résistivité et d'optique. De plus nous proposons un schéma de niveau de champ cristallin, avec le niveau fondamental #8 et les niveaux excites #7 et #6 a respectivement 18 et 39 mev. En annexe, nous présentons également les résultats obtenus par diffusion inélastique de neutrons avec le compose bidimensionnel xy bani#2(po#4)#2. Un programme a été développé pour déconvoluer les spectres mesures de la fonction de résolution instrumentale à 4 dimensions. Les largeurs intrinsèques, ainsi déterminées, de la diffusion magnétique critique ne montrent aucune caractéristique des excitations non linéaires prévues par la théorie, mais peut être expliqué uniquement par une renormalisation des ondes de spin

This present work shows the participation of low class women in Goiás Diocese during the 70 s and 80 s, time when the diocese opted preferentially for the poor, through religious actions in Evangelical Groups, or better, in the Comunidades Eclesias de Base CEBs (Eclesial Base Communities). Inserted in a socio-religious movement through the Latin American Continent, so called Liberation Christianism, Goias Diocese, will have an internal change never seen in its history. So in this context, will investigate, if these religious changes of Christian Liberation, had women participation and how. Also if this participation helped objectively to a pedagogical process which contributes for subjective and objective changes in the poor womens life as autonomous and valorization view. Giving them a chance, this work, tries to identify a view and a female history of Goias Diocese and Chritian Liberation. Even though, showing the difficulties founded by the poor women in the machist millenary institutions, as the family and the church, this paper would like also to show the victories achieved by them.
O presente trabalho registra a participação das mulheres de classes populares na Diocese de Goiás durante as décadas de 1970 e 1980, período em que a referida Diocese explicitou sua opção preferencial pelos pobres por meio da atuação religiosa nos Grupos de Evangelho, ou seja, nas Comunidades Eclesiais de Base (CEBs). Inserida em um movimento sócio-religioso ocorrido no continente Latino Americano denominado Cristianismo da Libertação, a Diocese de Goiás passará por mudanças internas até então não vistas em sua história. Investiga-se assim, dentro desse contexto, se as transformações religiosas do Cristianismo da Libertação contaram com a participação das mulheres e de que modo. Investiga-se igualmente se tal participação favoreceu objetivamente um processo pedagógico que contribuísse com mudanças subjetivas e objetivas na vida das mulheres pobres em vista de sua autonomia e de sua valorização. Dando voz a elas, esta pesquisa busca identificar um olhar e uma história feminina sobre a Diocese de Goiás e o Cristianismo da Libertação. Mesmo ao mostrar as dificuldades encontradas pelas mulheres pobres em instituições milenarmente machistas, como a família e a Igreja, esta dissertação quer mostrar também as conquistas alcançadas por elas.

Finalmente, este proyecto se propone como una alternativa, la cual promueve la generación de empleo a partir de responder a problemáticas que se presentan a distintas escalas de influencia. Por otro lado, potenciar la innovación mediante el uso de tecnologías, las cuales permiten aprovechar de mejor forma nuestros recursos naturales permitiendo reestablecer en laguna medida el equilibrio necesario que debemos restaurar como sociedad entre el medio construido y el natural.

[EN] The present research work studies the figure of Juan Jose Estelles Ceba, architect and professor of the School of Architecture of Valencia, who, in 1999, was awarded with the distinction of "Mestre valencia d'Arquitectura", the highest recognition granted by the Official Association of Architects of the Valencian Community for his large built works. He was involved in the world of architecture and university and his concerning about culture, art and social conscience in our city turned him into a "contemporary scholar", in words of Roman de la Calle, former director of the MuVIM. Juan Jose Estelles took part in the group of architects who restore modern architecture in Valencia between 50's and 60's. He significantly contributed, as member of the Parpallo group, to the artistic renovation of our city. From the Official Association of Architects, he encouraged the cultural vanguard and promoted, as professor, the establishment of the School of Architecture of Valencia. He actively participated in the critics, acceptance and defense of the citizen rights regarding the urban and architectural heritage of Valencia. For all his life, he maintained an ethical attitude which provided him with the respect and the moral authority generally recognized. Each of these facts could be enough to pay attention and study his work, but all together bring us closer to one of the most unique characters that, locally, our profession had in the second half of the XX century.
[ES] El presente trabajo de investigación estudia la figura de Juan José Estellés Ceba, arquitecto y profesor de la Escuela de Arquitectura de Valencia con una extensa obra construida que, en 1999, recibe la distinción de "Mestre valencià d'Arquitectura", máximo reconocimiento que otorga el Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos de la Comunidad Valenciana. Su vinculación con el mundo de la arquitectura y la docencia, y su implicación en la cultura, la vida artística y la participación ciudadana de nuestra ciudad hicieron de él un "ilustrado actual" en palabras del que fuera director del MuVIM, Román de la Calle. Juan José Estellés pertenecía al grupo de arquitectos que reintrodujo la arquitectura moderna en Valencia entre los años 50 y 60, formó parte de la renovación artística de nuestra ciudad como miembro del grupo Parpalló, ejerció de dinamizador cultural vanguardista desde el Colegio Oficial de Arquitectos, se implicó, como docente, en la puesta en marcha de la Escuela de Arquitectura de Valencia, participó activamente en la crítica, reivindicación y defensa de los derechos ciudadanos respecto al patrimonio urbano y arquitectónico de la ciudad y mantuvo toda su vida una actitud ética que le proporcionó un respeto y una autoridad moral, por todos reconocida. Cada uno de estos motivos sería suficiente para provocar el interés por estudiar su quehacer, pero en conjunto nos acercan a una de las personalidades más singulares que, a nivel local, ha dado nuestra profesión en la segunda mitad del siglo XX.

Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) studies have been carried out of emitter regions in polysilicon contacted emitter bipolar transistors. The preparation of suitable TEM thin foils is described. In addition a technique is developed for the observation and quant jtative interpretation of the break-up of the interfacial oxide layers observed in these samples. The effect of annealing the samples prior to emitter dopant implantation (pre-annealing) is investigated for phosphorus and arsenic doped samples, implanted into a polysilicon layer 0.4μm thick, with a dose of 1x10¹⁶cm². Two wafer pre-cleans have been used prior to polysilicon deposition to produce a thin oxide (0-8Å) and a thicker oxide (14Å). In the presence of the thinner oxide, the phosphorus doped samples enhance epitaxial regrowth of the polysilicon layer compared with the arsenic doped or undoped samples. In the presence of the thicker oxide, no difference is observed between the samples. A mechanism is proposed to explain this. The mechanisms controlling the gain of a phosphorus doped device are investigated and a model proposed to explain the observed electrical characteristics. It is concluded that there are two mechanisms responsible for the observed supression of hole current. Firstly tunnelling through the interfacial oxide and secondly some blocking effect of the interface. Carrier transport in the polysilicon is not believed to contribute to this supression. A dopant sensitive etch has been applied to TEM thin foils containing fully processed emitters in state-of-the-art devices. The shape of the emitter dopant distribution is revealed in such devices for the first time, and a 2-D profile is obtained from the emitter. It is shown that reduction in the emitter depth to 8OOÅ or less does not alter the emitter dopant geometry. The technique is demonstrated to be capable of resolving spatial separations of dopant iso-concentration contours of 100Å or less.

There are 30-35 copies of the retrotransposon Ty in the haploid genome of most laboratory strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Ty elements are 5.9 kb long, have LTRs of 340 bp and produce a genomic RNA that is 5.7 kb in length, through which it transposes. They contain two ORFs; the TYA gene of the class I element Tyl-15 is 1,319 nucleotides long whilst its TYB gene, which possesses the consensus sequences of retroviral acid proteases, reverse transcriptases and integrases, is 3,984 nucleotides long. TYB overlaps TYA by 38 nucleotides at its 5' end and is expressed as a TYA;TYB fusion protein. In an attempt to asign some in vivo functions to the Ty encoded proteins, the whole transcriptional unit of Tyl-15 was overexpressed in yeast. Electron micrographs of the overexpressing cells revealed an abundance of cytoplasmic, ~60 nm virus-like particles (Ty-VLPs). These contain the 5.7 kb Ty RNA and have an associated reverse transcriptase activity. Their major protein is p2 (48 kD), which is a proteolytic derivative of the primary translation product of TYA, pi (50 kD), a protein that is also assembled into particles. A truncated pi, encoded by a TYA gene shortened by 60 codons at its 3' end, still aggregates into particles. Furthermore, the addition of α2-IFN (20 kD) onto its carboxy terminus, to produce a pl-IFN fusion protein of ~68 kD, does not interfere with its particle forming properties. The hybrid VLPs are easy to purify and elicit an antibody response in rabbits to the Ty and IFN epitopes. A series of fragments spanning Tyl-15 were inserted into the packaging analysis vector, pMA924. The association of the resulting PGK-Ty-IFN hybrid RNAs with Ty-VLPs, in the presence of abundant Ty encoded proteins, was analysed by Northern blotting and used to assess the packaging capabilities of Ty RNA. Unexpectedly, RNA sequences that, direct specific packaging are produced from regions throughout Tyl-15. The signals corresponding to TYA are probably located within two regions of the genomic RNA, 5' to nucleotide 236 and 3' to nucleotide 737; those corresponding to TYB are in at least two, currently undefined, areas. The TYB gene of the class II element Tyl-17 overlaps TYA by 44 nucleotides. The fusion of α2-IFN cDNA fragments into all three reading phases of TYB followed by a Western blot analysis demonstrated that, like the TYB gene of Tyl-15, it too is expressed as a TYA:TYB fusion protein.

Macrophages are multifaceted innate immune cells, able to adapt their phenotype to respond to a myriad of conditions, engaging in tissue-specific functions and mediating either inflammatory or anti-inflammatory responses depending on the encountered stimuli. They conduct key roles in the orchestration of immune responses; from pathogen recognition through sterilising inflammation to resolution and repair. The Udalova laboratory has previously demonstrated that IRF5 promotes a pro- inflammatory macrophage phenotype, leading to the secretion of TNF, IL-12, and IL-23, enhancing Th1/Th17-mediated immune responses, and described the cooperation between IRF5 and the transcription factor RelA, which mediate the production of pro-inflammatory genes. The aim of this thesis is to further characterise the activity of IRF5 in macrophage inflammatory responses. I demonstrate that IRF5 not only regulates the transcription of cytokines and chemokines in response to bacterial stimuli, but also anti-microbial peptides, whilst simultaneously down-regulating homeostatic and resolving macrophage functions. My data also suggests that IRF5 plays a role in enforcing monocyte to macrophage differentiation by up-regulating the transcription of key macrophages markers and repressing dendritic cell identity genes. To further characterise the mechanisms of the inflammatory response mounted by macrophages I used an unbiased approach; combining twenty-three transcription factor ChIP-seq data sets with chromatin accessibility information from ATAC-seq, uncovering RUNX1 as a novel partner of IRF5 that binds co-operatively to clusters of enhancers, which control the transcription of pro-inflammatory genes in a signal-dependent manner. This is the first study demonstrating a critical role for RUNX1 in activity of inflammatory macrophages.

This dissertation deals with the women at Base s Eclesial Communities (CEBs), in Goiânia and investigates if the women find at CEBs a favorable space to participation, autonomy and equality relationship. The CEBs, understood as a socialreligious phenomenon that emphasizes the democratic participation and the liberator commitment, appear in the same decade in which emerge the new feminist movements, that define themselves by freedom and equality ideals and criticize the inequality and subordination relationships between women and men. The investigation of the reasons that boost the women to look for CEBs, the gains obtained and the challenges found has fundamental importance to understand the meaning of this Brazilian social-religious phenomenon. The present paper allows the CEBs actresses tell their word about the reasons, the gains obtained and the transformations happened in the relationships from their participation in them, so the difficulties and challenges found. They show the process of becoming autonomy people and able to fight for their rights in equality and alterative relation with men. This process advances with challenges, because the patriarchalism still persists in the Church and society as a whole.
Esta dissertação aborda as mulheres nas Comunidades Eclesiais de Base (CEBs), em Goiânia e investiga se as mulheres encontram nas CEBs um espaço favorável à participação, à autonomia e às relações de igualdade. As CEBs, entendidas como um fenômeno sócio-religioso que enfatiza a participação democrática e o compromisso libertador, surgem na mesma década em que emergem os novos movimentos feministas, que se definem pelos ideais de liberdade e igualdade e criticam as relações de desigualdade e subordinação entre mulheres e homens. A investigação das motivações que impulsionam as mulheres a procurarem as CEBs, os ganhos obtidos e os desafios encontrados é de fundamental importância para se entender o significado deste fenômeno sócio-religioso brasileiro. O presente trabalho permite que as atrizes das CEBs digam a sua palavra sobre as motivações, os ganhos obtidos, as transformações acontecidas nas relações a partir de sua participação nas mesmas, assim como as dificuldades e desafios encontrados. Elas mostram o processo de como tornam-se pessoas autônomas e capazes de lutar por seus direitos numa relação de igualdade e alteridade com os homens. Este processo avança com desafios, pois o patriarcalismo ainda persiste na Igreja e na sociedade como um todo.

Hollow cathodes are critical devices in the successful operation of electric propulsion thrusters. Cathodes featuring C12A7:electride as an ultra-low work function thermionic emitter are hypothesized to have faster start-up times and lower operating temperatures than conventional hollow cathodes. C12A7:electride is a crystalline ceramic in which electrons clathrated in sub-nanometer sized cages act as a conductive medium. Due to its unique atomic structure and large size, C12A7:electride has a predicted work function of 0.6 eV. As a result, C12A7:electride is an attractive option for a thermionic emission material in a hollow cathode. Calculations predict equivalent levels of current emission as LaB6 or CeB6, but at much lower temperature. C12A7:electride is stable at temperatures below its re-crystallization temperature (∼1000 °C) and is not consumed during operation. C12A7:electride has been fabricated at CSU using a simplified, one-step approach that results in a more conductive material than previously reported. The material has been integrated into a novel hollow cathode design that takes advantage of its unique properties to decrease start-up time and power consumption. Our paper will discuss preliminary results obtained with several cathode configurations. In addition, results from the experimental determination of basic material properties such as conductivity and work function will be presented. Strategies to further enhance electron emission through surface modifications will also be discussed.

The effect of using curvilinear element blades (CEBs) on a low-solidity cascade diffuser (LSD) in a centrifugal compressor was investigated both experimentally and numerically. Centrifugal compressors require a higher efficiency and wider operating range to reduce the lifecycle costs of plants in which they are used and the effects their users have on the environment. A LSD has a wider operating range than a common vaned diffuser that has high solidity, but worse efficiency at the design point. For this reason, this research aims to improve the efficiency of the LSD and keep its operating range wide without changing the blade setting angle or two-dimensional geometry. As a first step, LSDs with three different curvilinear element profiles were compared with a conventional LSD, and the mechanism of the performance improvement was investigated by using a numerical simulation. These diffusers have the same two-dimensional geometry, blade setting angle, and number of blades but different blade stacking geometry in the span-wise direction. Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations were conducted using a one-blade path model with an inlet, impeller, and LSD diffuser passages. The LSD using the CEBs improved the efficiency by 1.9% over that of the conventional LSD at the design point while maintaining the same operating range. The calculation results reveal that the recirculation region decreased at the suction surface of the diffuser vane in the CEB case and the diffuser efficiency improved. The concaved suction surface increased the blade loading and induced higher velocity on the suction surface. The higher velocity prevented reverse flow on the suction surface at the hub side, and the secondary flow removed the thick boundary layer at the trailing edge to the downstream of the diffuser. Experimental verification was also conducted using a single-stage compressor with an impeller, diffuser, and scroll casing to verify the prediction. The experimental results showed the LSD using the CEB has a higher pressure rise at the stator region than the conventional LSD and verified the performance improvement due to using the CEBs.

Contextualización del Tema: Se define la condición corporal como la cantidad de grasa que cubre la vaca, que indica las reservas de energía útil que dispone para hacer frente a las altas demandas que impone la producción de leche y se puntualizan las ventajas que tiene este indicador sobre el peso vivo, el perímetro torácico y otros estimadores de las reservas corporales. Vacío de Investigación: En la ganadería de ganado Cebú del trópico colombiano especialmente en la región caribe, se ha arraigado la técnica de la observación visual, sin tener conocimiento de los indicadores de la condición corporal, y por lo tanto se requiere promover el uso de la calificación de la condición corporal como herramienta de campo en la toma de decisiones en el manejo nutricional de la vaca. Propósito de Working paper: Es socializar el conocimiento que viene realizando el semillero de investigación acordes con las salidas de campo, aludiendo al tipo de estrategias didácticas que implican la aplicación de conceptos, teorías y postulados para construcción de nuevo conocimiento. Metodología seguida en el estudio: Se brinda una metodología para ganado cebú con 5 categorías de puntaje, aplicando la guía para la evaluación de la condición corporal de vacas en sistemas doble propósito, con la siguiente escala: 1 muy pobre, 2 pobre, 3 regular, 4 buena, 5 muy buena y 6 obesa. Resultados Obtenidos Evidenciamos que la gran mayoría de la vacas presentan una condición corporal entre 3 y 4, la cual se puede considerar de regular a buena, reflejando que tienen poca producción de leche, presentan un gran número de días abiertos y una baja condición corporal al final de la lactancia. Conclusiones: Se evidencio la estrecha relación entre valores de la condición corporal con el plano nutricional, la incorporación a la producción, valores de condición corporal de 2.5 a 3.5 si se desean alcanzar niveles productivos y reproductivos adecuados.

Satellite image-derived vehicle counts were used to measure local economic activity following the opening of the new terminal at the Mactan-Cebu International Airport in the Philippines. Results reveal that the terminal’s opening has had positive impacts on Cebu’s local economy. A comparison of the vehicle count measure with luminosity-derived metrics suggests that the former is better at capturing seasonal and spatial variations in treatment effects, especially for beach tourism activities in Cebu.

Individual loci affecting economic traits in dairy cattle (ETL) have been detected via linkage to genetic markers by application of the granddaughter design in the US population and the daughter design in the Israeli population. From these analyses it is not possible to determine allelic frequencies in the population at large, or whether the same alleles are segregating in different families. We proposed to answer this question by application of the "modified granddaughter design", in which granddaughters with a common maternal grandsire are both genotyped and analyzed for the economic traits. The objectives of the proposal were: 1) to fine map three segregating ETL previously detected by a daughter design analysis of the Israeli dairy cattle population; 2) to determine the effects of ETL alleles in different families relative to the population mean; 3) for each ETL, to determine the number of alleles and allele frequencies. The ETL on Bostaurusautosome (BT A) 6 chiefly affecting protein concentration was localized to a 4 cM chromosomal segment centered on the microsatellite BM143 by the daughter design. The modified granddaughter design was applied to a single family. The frequency of the allele increasing protein percent was estimated at 0.63+0.06. The hypothesis of equal allelic frequencies was rejected at p<0.05. Segregation of this ETL in the Israeli population was confirmed. The genes IBSP, SPP1, and LAP3 located adjacent to BM143 in the whole genome cattle- human comparative map were used as anchors for the human genome sequence and bovine BAC clones. Fifteen genes within 2 cM upstream of BM143 were located in the orthologous syntenic groups on HSA4q22 and HSA4p15. Only a single gene, SLIT2, was located within 2 cM downstream of BM143 in the orthologous HSA4p15 region. The order of these genes, as derived from physical mapping of BAC end sequences, was identical to the order within the orthologous syntenic groups on HSA4: FAM13A1, HERC3. CEB1, FLJ20637, PP2C-like, ABCG2, PKD2. SPP, MEP, IBSP, LAP3, EG1. KIAA1276, HCAPG, MLR1, BM143, and SLIT2. Four hundred and twenty AI bulls with genetic evaluations were genotyped for 12 SNPs identified in 10 of these genes, and for BM143. Seven SNPs displayed highly significant linkage disequilibrium effects on protein percentage (P<0.000l) with the greatest effect for SPP1. None of SNP genotypes for two sires heterozygous for the ETL, and six sires homozygous for the ETL completely corresponded to the causative mutation. The expression of SPP 1 and ABCG2 in the mammary gland corresponded to the lactation curve, as determined by microarray and QPCR assays, but not in the liver. Anti-sense SPP1 transgenic mice displayed abnormal mammary gland differentiation and milk secretion. Thus SPP 1 is a prime candidate gene for this ETL. We confirmed that DGAT1 is the ETL segregating on BTA 14 that chiefly effects fat concentration, and that the polymorphism is due to a missense mutation in an exon. Four hundred Israeli Holstein bulls were genotyped for this polymorphism, and the change in allelic frequency over the last 20 years was monitored.

The Breakthrough RESEARCH project, in collaboration with De La Salle University’s Social Development Research Center in Manila, conducted a targeted study to better understand which social and behavior change programming approaches are most effective for encouraging out-of-school youth (OSY) ages 15 to 19 to adopt priority reproductive health (RH) and family planning (FP) behaviors. The study was conducted among OSY in four urban regions of the Philippines: Manila, Quezon City, Cebu City, and Davao City.
